Yes, we do.
We have a packed menu for y'all today.
We have the chairwoman, Marcilia Nicholson, that will be calling in and telling us about Harvest Fest.
You know what?
Before we do all of that, Shannon, please tell the folks where they can find us at.
I was getting excited.
I was getting excited.
We got Ray Nitty, R-A-Y-N-I-T-T-I across all platforms.
Myself, maybe Shannon, M-A-Y-B-E-S-H-A-N-N-O-N across all platforms.

Don't forget, we got the lunch break on Facebook.

And if you want to watch us live in studio, we stream live every day.
We are at 101.7, the truth on YouTube right now.
Pull up.
Pull up on us.
We have a full menu today as Shannon has said.
Bring somebody to lunch with you today, man.
Please share the link.
Share the link right now.
Yes, we have.
The county board chairwoman, Marcilia Nicholson.
Bevel, I'm sorry.
She was recently married.
Clap it up for Marcilia, man.
She was recently married.
We'll make sure we send people's names properly.
And then later on today, we have the amazing Carrie Washington joining us for What's Poppin' with Shannon at around 1230.
So make sure y'all come in.
This is going to be What's Poppin' with Shannon like no other.
All right.
So make sure you pull up, man.
We got some some amazing conversations that we're going to have.
But, Shannon, if I'm not mistaken, the chairwoman is already on and waiting for us to get into it with Harvest Fest.
True.
CC.
Well, we wait for everything to get pulled in.
What we're going to be talking about is Harvest Fest, and she's going to be giving us some information about what Harvest Fest is, how can people get involved with it, and really just tap in with what the county has going on.
So, Shannon, you familiar with Harvest Fest?
Are we ready?
Hey, how's everybody doing?
We're doing
Good.
I'm running high after Tuesday's debate.
Hmm.
They were proudly killed it.
So I got to start.
I feel great.
Look.
I was one of the first people out for David when he first announced.
I believe in David.
I've worked with him for the last six years.
And Ray, as you know, we knew each other even before we were all elected.
So I know who he is as a person.
He's a phenomenal father.
a great friend and he's a hard worker.
He and myself, we turned the county around.
I think folks have a really short memory before David and I were elected at the county in leadership.
They did nothing but fight.
They
couldn't get done done.
And I think we've been able to do more together in six years than people, you know, for 20, 30, 40 and 50 years before us.
So I think he's going to make a great governor.
Early voting started.
So we need everybody to make sure you get out and vote early.
So nothing gets in the way.
Make your plan.
And then
can't get to early voting, November 3rd, polls open at 7 and close at 8.
People always ask me, will he win?
He will if we vote.
So get out and vote, everybody.
each other.
CC, that's what's 12th and Berline.
They be forgetting.
They forget where you from, see?
That's right.
They be forgetting, man.
So we be having a reminder.
But I just want to say I'm proud of you as well.
Because like you said, I know your story.
I know where you... Your phone, your number is still saved in my phone and CC from the fister.
So... Yeah.
So...
You know what I'm saying?
I'm proud of you, man.
I know what you you've overcome.
I know about the fighting that you all had to deal with.
And we've talked about some of those crazy emails that you get as well, just trying to do your job, man.
So super proud of you, man.
And I'm super excited for what's next.
I'm going to let you say all of that stuff.
But I'm excited.
I'm excited, excited.
So let's get into this.
I know time is very.
limited today with you.
But let's get into this.
Tell the folks about Harvest Fest and then me and Shannon got some questions for you.
Absolutely.
So we are inviting everyone to join us this Saturday the 24th at 2 to 6 p.m.
in Sherman Park.
Sherman Park is one of the parks I represent and I've been representing the park for about six years now.
It was a weird situation with redistricting but now I have it and as soon as I got it under my umbrella I hit the ground running.
A few years ago I got a million dollars allocated to the park and then we were able to get a match for a total of 2.5
million dollars.
If you've been in Sherman Park recently, you see there's a new playground, a new splash pad.
We got lights.
We got new paths, upgrades to the Boys and Girls Club.
And Harvest Fest is all about bringing people to the park, activating it so it could be full of community and also it's public safety.
So active parks are safe parks.
And we just want to, you know, promote all the wonderful things happening in Sherman Park when you hear about it.
You hear about the racial uprisings, you know, you hear about some of the challenges, but there's so many beautiful things happening.
And we invite neighbors and also people from all across the county, come in, stop, stop looking on TV.
All right, like let's fix your perception by bringing you into the park.
And so Harvest Fest is a joint effort through my office.
We have the Milwaukee Parks Foundation, Herb Cole Philanthropies, Palermo's Pizza, and then also Sherman Park Association.
Friends of Sherman Park and Boys and Girls Club.
And we bring in resources.
We bring in vendors.
We provide free food, free costumes.
DJ Gideon will be there with some music.
And then we have entertainment.
So it's just a family fun event.
And we welcome again everybody to come and join us tomorrow.
has it
Yeah, it's you know, it's it's amazing because this started the idea was like a little twinkle in my eye.
One of the reasons why I wanted to do it was because growing up on 12th and Burlai, when we wanted to go trick or treating, we had to leave and go down to the east side or go down to where the big houses were to get candy.
And so I wanted to first and foremost provide a space where the kids in the community didn't have to leave the community to come and trick or treat.
And so each resource booth has candy.
And so as they visit the vendors, as they visit the resources, they can
and have their toe back and get candy and not have to ever leave their community.
And so it started off, we had just a small set of sponsors.
We had a few vendors, but now we're in our fifth year.
Our budget has grown.
We've seen more people.
I mean, last year when we set up, we started at two, people were arriving at one.
So folks are very excited to
the parking.
And they're always asking, is it coming back?
Is it coming back?
I didn't know it would become an annual thing.
But now it's five years.
Our theme is Toy Story 5.
We
have a nice theme.
And we give costumes out in that theme.
So it's just been exciting.
And I thank the partners.
I have to first and foremost thank my partners for being committed to this effort as well.
And it's just, yeah, it's been great.
It's been great.
Yeah, yeah.
So you'll definitely see some Milwaukee County departments.
So we also want to make sure people understand who we are.
So we're bringing the government to them.
So you'll see the we'll have a Department of Transportation Milwaukee County Office of Equity, the Sheriff's Department will be out there.
We'll have a Department of Health and Human Services and also some of our cultural institutions like our zoo and our museums.
And then we'll also have a different vendor.
So small
business owners coming in and selling their products.
We're very excited to have some youth vendors this year.
So some young people who are trying to make some money.
So come and spend your coins with them.
We'll have our youth commissioners there as well volunteering.
And then we have the Milwaukee Flyers.
So in addition to music, we'll have the Milwaukee Flyers putting on a performance and then activities.
So things like dipping caramel apples.
There's a fun Toy Story themed activity.
We also have our budget annual hearing coming up.
We adopt our budget on November 5th, so we'll have a budget booth to invite people.
to learn about how the budget takes place and how they can have a voice and what sort of resources we fund in the community.
So there'll be lots to do and the vendors and the booths, they all bring their own activities as well and raffle prizes.
We like to give things away.
So come and win some free tickets.
We have brewers tickets.
We have a bubbler bike.
We have free access to the museum.
So there'll be a lot going on, a lot to do.
Yeah, so there's parking all around the park.
So Sherman Boulevard also on Burlai and there's a smaller parking lot and also to the east on 42nd Street.
So just park all around the park, but you'll see us.
We'll be front and center.
You'll see us from Sherman Boulevard and you'll see a big plow
truck.
from the Department of Transportation.
You'll see all the booths.
You'll see hay bales and pumpkins and gourds and fresh produce that we also will be inviting folks to take home.
So you won't be able to miss us.
event?
Absolutely.
So I hope y'all have your pins because I'm going to give you three things.
One, make sure to vote.
November 3rd, 7 a.m.
to 8 p.m.
Harvest Fest, tomorrow on Saturday, 2 to 6 p.m.
at Sherman Park.
And then three, our annual budget hearing is at the Milwaukee Art Museum at 6 p.m.
Again, come make your voice known, what you want to see in our budget.
There's free parking available.
We hope to see you there.
I
got you right.
And I would love to come back on the show and just talk more about everything that's happening.
happen.
I love it.
I love it.
Thank you
much.

We have a lot going on.
Early voting is happening right now.
We just talked.
to Marcilia Nicholson-Bovell.
She was recently married, make sure.
If you see her, congratulate her and her husband on that, man.
And then joining us shortly, we will have the amazing Kerry Washington joining us, Shannon.
I'm excited, Shannon.
Are you excited?
Ironically enough, what was one of our palette cleansers we were supposed to get to on Wednesday?
and we wasn't able to get to it was the story of the 855 Black women of the 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion, the only Black women's unit overseas in World War II who cleared 17 million pieces of mail in three months, and their motto was no mail, low morale, and...
We didn't even get to get to that because the conversation we was having so good and lo and behold, who do we have joining us today?
Ms.
Carrie Washington herself, who actually played the major in that.
And we got some amazing questions for today, Shannon.
What are you looking for today?
What are you looking forward to today?
I feel like you bring up that we were, we literally were planned to talk about that on Wednesday and now we have her in studio is major because I'm like, man, I would love to hear more about that.
And we wanted to share it with the Truth Nation either way.
So to have her in studio is really exciting.
And I'm, you know, happy to be able to talk to her about it.
No.
OK, we'll wait.
Take this phone call.
Let's
feeling pretty good.
Hello, lunch.

If I had a billion dollars, I wouldn't give $3,200 to this.
I'm not, I'm not, nah.
I'm not kidding.
I'm not kidding.
When I came down and played my sex, you know, and, and then I heard Sharon say yesterday,
Yeah, she's gonna be on this show and she can't do no wrong.

know, you know, you know, you and your co-hosts are leaning, right, you know, towards capitalism too much.
And I just want to say, just like your co-host said, yeah, if I had $20 left and I had paid all my bills.
We're not going there.
I wouldn't have called you if you wouldn't have said billionaires.
weren't talking about billionaires,
Bob?
Oh, you better change that subject, because I'm, you know, I give you ice cream and cake.
Sometimes I got to give you casserole.
You can't help it.
I can't help it.
I appreciate it.
I appreciate it.
And that Castro has to do with you leaning
You know, the fact is capitalism, you know, just like a bank.
What are your thoughts about this election coming up here?
This is one of the most important elections we've had in the state coming up, right?
And we don't get to talk to you much, Bob.
I get to hear a lot from you on Sherwin's show.
So I appreciate you taking the time to call and talk to us today.
I'd love to get your thoughts on this upcoming election while we got you.
You better change this subject.
You better.
Cause I would get you, you know, cause we talked about billionaires, not regular Joe's, right?
Your co-host was talking about $20 and turning around it.
I ain't got no more money.
We're not talking about them people.
We were talking about billionaires.
And I got, I got analysis of that, what she was talking about.
That's a different subject.
Yeah, we thank you for clearing that up.
I want to get on your case.
I'm shocked.
It's just, I just, you know, thank you for clearing that up.
Handle this casserole.
You know what I mean?
Try this.
You know what I mean?
You know, I know it's untasting, but you were telling about a different carry.
Okay, yeah, now that you
Where I don't know her all I know is you tell me who I'm gonna vote for talk about
need our
right, we need all y'all
All right, Bob.
Because we was talking about billionaires by now.
I'm going to get back on it because you want to bring up castor all on it.
You said if you had a billion dollars, get all the way down to 800,000, Bob.
That's not sustainable.
Now you come back on it.
All right, Bob.
Now, I'm going to tell you this, Bob.
We're about to go to break.
I don't want the producer to just hang up on you, and then you think we're just hanging up on people.
So we have to go to break, Bob.
And when we come back, we're going to be going into a different section called What's Poppin' with Shannon.
And we'll have our amazing guest joining us, Bob.
All right?
So if you stick around for after that, we could continue that conversation.
But don't go anywhere, Truth Nation.
When we come back, we will be joined by the amazing
Kerry Washington right here on the award winning 1017 the truth.
You're watching The Lunch Break with Ray Nitty and maybe Shannon on the 1017 the truth.
the YouTube channel, be sure to like and subscribe today.
What up Milwaukee welcome back welcome back welcome back Yes, you are punched in with your favorite crew in the brew the lunch break crew Ray nitty Maybe Shannon DJ brother Z holding us down with the production and sound and joining us in studio Shannon we have the amazing Kerry Washington joining us today.
How are
you?
Really excited to be here
Yeah, travel was great.
I love this city.
I love this town.
I love being here, talking to folks, talking to voters.
And the city is like on fire right now with your world theory game one happening tonight.
Bucks home opener tonight as well.
And we're here supporting what could be a monumental day for Wisconsin politics, electing the only fourth.
Which would be the only fourth if I'm not mistaken black governor in this country's history So we have Kerry Washington joining us Shannon.
How you feeling Shannon?
I'm excited.
I hope you're excited as I am
So we have a couple questions for me and Shannon brought together But we're gonna tell the folks a little bit about you before we get into the questions.

What's happening?
When do you have time for yourself?
I'm tired listening to you.
Oh,
lot of our listeners this time.
No, no, no, no.
I'm tired.
I'm not tired of listening to you.
No, no, no.
Tired thinking about all that work.
week?
So I'm very passionate about voting, you know, like Mariah gets Christmas, I get election season, like this is my season.
And I really love encouraging people to understand that they matter, right?
That that your voice.
your vote is important in this time.
And I live in a state in California where obviously voting is important in my state.
I vote regularly.
But there are places all around the country that are like real important places that are the races are tight, you know, and where real change can happen on the ground.
So.
I've made a point through the years you talked about the VIP cohort.
I've made a point over the years, many, many years to work with organizations in states where that are real battleground states, places like Michigan and Wisconsin and Georgia.
Arizona places where the work that's happening on the ground grassroots work is really transforming people's lives and where those votes really, really make a difference.
So I love being in these trenches.
I love being in Milwaukee.
I've worked with organizations like block through the years where, you know, knocking on doors, supporting organizers, grassroots folks, really making change.
I call them the real Olivia popes, right?
Cause
they're
the real people making change and, and fixing our neighborhoods, our communities.
So.
It's exciting to be here this week.
I'm also going to be in Georgia.
I'm going to be in Michigan, but I'm very excited to be here, home of the Brewers right now, talking to voters and just reminding people how important your voice is.
are
you?
One of the things that comes up again and again is the economy, right?
Like folks are struggling, whether it's this, you know, wild gas tax that you have in this state that is, you know, unnecessary, um, what's going on with healthcare in the state, what's going on with education.
Um, people are struggling and you know, I, it's one of the reasons why I think David Crowley is such an extraordinary candidate is because he knows what it feels like to struggle, right?
Like when I talk to him,
His family faced possible eviction three times, you know, and now he's living here in the city and the state with his three beautiful daughters.
And he he understands what's at stake as a dad, as a as a working person, as somebody who's who's been in civic engagement for a long time.
He shows real leadership and understanding, you know, and I want to support more leaders that are coming from a lived experience of knowing what people need.
plan.
I feel, you know this, the things that matter in your life, they only get done if they're in your plan, right?
Like, if I don't plan when I'm gonna exercise in the week, I'm a mom, I'm a wife, I'm a professional, I have a lot of stuff going on in life, like we all do.
and the things that I don't prioritize by planning to do them sometimes they fall by the wayside other priorities take their place so we say make a plan to vote because you don't want this moment to pass and you've given up your voice you don't want this moment to pass and you're like oh I wanted to vote but I don't have a ride or oh I wanted to vote but nobody's able to take care of my kids or I wanted to vote but I don't feel comfortable going alone like
Ask yourself, what is possibly gonna get in the way of me getting out and vote and then making a plan so that you can get out and vote?
And not just you, like plan to go with your friends, your loved ones.
For me, the research is very clear.
When somebody like me comes forward, Carrie Washington, Olivia Pope, like when I come forward and I say go vote, it actually doesn't change people's voting behavior.
Celebrities coming out and telling people what to do when it comes to democracy, it doesn't really make a difference.
What makes a difference is hearing from your close circle, your friends, your family members.
So I don't come out on the road saying like, vote because I said to vote.
I come out on the road to say like, you actually have more power than me.
I'm here to remind you of your power because if you, if every single listener listening right now got on their text thread and text the people that they love 10.
20 family members to say it's important to me that you vote.
Don't forget to vote.
That's what makes the difference.
So I know that I'm, I can't do this.
I can't make the change here.
And it's not my change to make.
I don't live here.
But I, you know, when I woke up in 2016 after the election, my character, Olivia Pope was trending on social media because everybody was like, Olivia Pope, you have to fix this.
You have to save us.
You have to save us.
And the reality is like,
As flattered as I was, I was like, Olivia Pope is not real.
Like we have forgotten our power.
We think an imaginary character on television has more power to transform our communities than we do.
So I was like, I want to make it my mission to remind people that they have more power than Olivia Pope.
You can impact your circle, your community, your city, your state in ways that Olivia Pope and Kerry Washington never can.
So that for me is why you have to make a plan is because you don't want to waste your power.
You don't want to hand your power over to somebody else.
So make it a priority.
Figure out when you're going to vote.
Early voting is happening now.
Get out there.
Don't wait.
You can go now.
So a couple things.
One is, again, I wanted to partner with groups on the ground.
For example, like Block here in Milwaukee.
in Wisconsin because what doesn't move people is outsiders coming in telling a community what to do, right?
So I was like, if I want to make sure that I'm pouring into communities all over the country, I need to partner with
Local experts on the ground people who are really in community who know what communities need so it's been a privilege to kind of Travel places and say what do you need for me?
How can I help you to provide funding to provide support around narrative storytelling to provide?
Resources like that for me is a gift to say like I'm in a place in my life where I can give but I'm not gonna tell you what to do I want you to tell me what to do so that's one thing that really I think helps and then this thing of
To me voting is an act of love It really is it's like voting is how we we make our values tangible in the world And I find that a lot of times when people say like oh my vote doesn't matter It's because they feel like they don't matter like their voice doesn't matter so I think it's a real act of love to say like
Listen, you may not even be in love with some of these candidates.
I think you're so lucky right now in Wisconsin.
You have incredible candidates up and down on the Democratic side.
Candidates who really care about the people who really want to make a difference.
David Crawley being one of them, but there's so many incredible candidates.
Sometimes people feel like they can't fall in love with a candidate.
And my answer to them is you don't have to fall in love with the candidate.
You have to love yourself enough.
to show up at those polls to pick people who are going to do right by you.
Because by the way, we pay them.
Like when we pay our taxes, we pay their salaries.
So you got to boss up.
You can't have people in office.
whose job it is to literally work for you, but you're not telling them what you want and how you tell them what you want is with your vote.
So it's just, it's such a waste.
It's like giving over our power when we don't show up and vote because we're paying these people.
Like if I hired somebody to come and watch my kids and I came home and they had their feet up smoking a cigarette watching TV, not paying attention to my kids, like I would not pay them.
But we're paying folks to not do what's best by us because we don't show up and vote.
A lot of time talking about everything in this
country that's broken.
I want to tell you about someone who's actually fixing things.
David Crowley grew up facing food insecurity and housing instability, so for him, affordable housing isn't abstract.
It's personal.
As Milwaukee County Executive, he got right to work bringing labor, community leaders, and local businesses together to deliver nearly 1,000 affordable homes.
Now, David is running for governor of Wisconsin, where statewide elections have come down to less than
Yeah, that's great.
It's a great question because I think
You know part for me when we're knocking on doors and we're out in community I think it's as important to listen as it is to talk to people because People want to be heard people want to be seen and when we're convincing people that voting matters part of what you you want to say is I See and hear you in terms of what matters to you whether it's public schools reproductive freedom health care housing issues
If those are the things that are on your mind, I can tell you the candidates that care about those things and really want to take care of people.
But you have to listen to people to know what it is that they care about and then be able to tell the story.
Like when you talk about David's story, you talk about what he's been through, what his family has been through, what financial insecurity has meant for him and how he's taken that wisdom forward to be able to work across.
Party lines and balance budgets and you know that it's the it's the story of what he's been through that Humanizes this moment people don't want statistics throwing up people want to feel human, you know, especially in this world with like AI and not knowing what's human was people want to hear stories about who who somebody is deep down on the inside
Oh, listen, if your vote didn't matter, they wouldn't be coming for voting rights in the way they are.
Like, folks are trying
to make it
harder for people to vote because they understand the power of the vote.
So again, like, I think it's really about saying like, you need to know, look, here's part of it.
Sometimes, and this is very real for me, I feel like I have had to deal with this in this time in our country.
Sometimes we vote and we don't get the result that we want.
And that's hard.
That's painful.
It can feel crushing, it can feel heartbreaking.
But in life, you can't give up just because something doesn't go your way once.
I was saying a bunch of college students the other night,
Sometimes when you get your heart broken, you feel like, I don't want to date anymore.
But if I let my first heartbreak keep me out of the game from dating, I wouldn't have the husband that I have today.
I'm so blessed to be
in the marriage that I'm in.
But if I let early heartbreak keep me out of the game, I wouldn't be winning now.
And we have to think long term like that when it comes to politics.
You may have your heart broken at times.
You may not win every race, but you still stay in the game because you're thinking about the gold in the end.
You may not win every battle, but you got to win the war overall.
And that I think is something we have to, it's something that I love about being here in Milwaukee.
There's a kind of grit here in this city.
People are tough.
You have to bring that sentiment, that feeling of like, it might be hard, but I'm gonna fight the good fight into your political engagement.
Yeah, I think a big part of it is that I know he has struggled.
I mean, I've seen that he's really effective as county executive You know, he's been able to do those hard things like work across party lines and balance budgets and he's he's a good public servant
But I know also where he comes from.
He understands these issues in a real personal way.
You look at his opponent who's been funded by billionaires who don't understand what's happening
on
the ground here in Milwaukee.
And again, I'm not from here.
I know I live in California.
I know I'm an actress.
I know I, in many ways I have a cushed life, but I come from the Bronx, right?
Like I come from us.
I know what it's like to, to be without.
I know what it feels like to be concerned about the schools in your community, to be concerned about your neighbors, to be worried about.
I have healthcare, I have aging parents, I have, you know, like I want leaders who understand folks on the ground and who are gonna be accountable.
The other thing I really respect about David Crawley is that he knows that when he's in office, he's gonna have to be accountable and respond to the people.
He's gonna have to deliver and hear back from people.
This is not just a push job to be here and be comfortable for 16 years.
Like this is,
you know, Wisconsin's first open race for governor in 16 years.
He knows how important this moment is and it's a moment where people can be heard.
And I love that he's a girl dad You
know
that he cares about young people that he cares about women His wife is incredible.
Like I just I think he's gonna do an amazing job But also to remind people he can't do it alone, right?
Like you got to vote up and down the ticket You got to vote democratic democratic so that also David Carly has the support that he needs from lieutenant governor from AG from state legislatures
Riverside
You know, Riverside alumni.
That's what I mean.
They're real people.
They're real people from the community.
about
where we
That's right.
And he understands that politics, that political work is not like a
an ephemeral, like an abstract thing.
He understands that these policies, the people you put in power and the policies they make, they affect what happens at the kitchen table.
They affect your real life, the price of gas, the price of groceries, whether your kid gets a great education or not.
That's what politics is.
It's not an abstract thing, it's real life.
I mean...
I mean, women, we make a lot of decisions.
All over my household.
I mean, we love our men.
We love our men.
I've already said that.
I love my husband.
But there's a lot of political power, cultural power that comes from women.
And I really love being part of events that encourage women to vote because the truth is,
And I don't want to sound too historical or like a nerd, but sometimes I really do reflect at how hard we have fought as black people in this country to have the vote, to be able to exercise our right to vote, but also as women.
Like people forget there was a time in this country where women were not allowed to vote just because we were women.
And so I think showing up and participating in our political process to, again, make sure that the people who represent us to respect our voices and our choices is really important to me.
Definitely so you've chosen to be vocal about causes like voting rights and democracy and moments when a lot of people with those big platforms like you have They've chosen to stay silent Why do you decide to speak up when so many others choose to be silent?
And what does that cost you to speak up versus what it costs you not to speak up?
Yeah
You know, I've always been a bit of an activist I grew up with parents who are really civically engaged My mom used to bring me into the voting booth to vote with her when I was a little girl and I watched her protest We used to march for stuff in our home like I'm my parents are engaged people and for me It was less about like oh now that I have a platform I have to speak up.
I don't come out I don't come to voting because I'm in the public eye
It's actually that I don't want to give up my voice in this democracy just because I'm famous.
I'm not going to give up my passion to participate because that's a democracy is that we all get to have a voice like we the people.
I'm not going to suddenly not be one of the people because I'm an actor.
So I choose to continue to speak up because I think it's part of what it means to be an American.
But I come here like this morning.
I was at a launch for a bunch of folks going out to knock on doors and.
You realize, like, this is not up to famous people.
This is up to your neighbors coming out there.
And I know people are exhausted.
I know that this is the time of year where there's the commercials and the flyers and the phone calls.
But we stay engaged because politics is life, you know?
So I guess there's a cost.
But I also, I didn't come to acting to be famous.
I came to this because I love storytelling.
I love what I do.
I love getting to transform into different people.
I love storytelling.
Because I didn't come to this to be famous, if it costs me fame, I don't complain.
Like if you want to not follow me or not watch my movie because I express my voice as an American citizen, you have that right too.
I'm going to continue to do what I
You're listening to The Lunch Break with Ray Nitty and maybe Shannon, where every discussion is on the menu on the award-winning 1017 The Truth.
if you have a mail-in ballot, drop it off in person, vote in person.
And I just want to say, I love that we say we're pushing the vote for David Crowley, but what that means is we're pushing a vote for you, right?
Like we're pushing a vote for the person who's looking out for your best interest.
We're pushing you to vote for somebody who's going to look out for you and your family.
city.
Somebody whose number is in your phone.
Exactly.
whatever your plan is, make a plan.
Yeah, Captain Charity Adams.
I love playing that woman.
That whole experience was so magical.
And I feel like, again, it was an opportunity for me to reinforce how important
Black folks and Black women in particular have been to the story of building this country.
And many of those women hid the fact that they were in the Sixth Triblate from their families because when they came home, there was a lot of shame on them.
People tried to make them feel ashamed for going off to war and for doing what they did, but they were such heroes.
And so I really, I learned so much about how
we just continue to be defenders of democracy or all over the world through the story of the six, triple eight.
But also Charity Adams really, she helped me learn more about leadership.
You know, I always say like, I kind of knew what leadership looked like before I started playing Olivia Pope, but she taught me how to step into my power.
And I felt like Charity Adams really taught me about that power in community, that leadership in community with other black women.
you know, I it's funny I feel like you know David Crawley wouldn't need Olivia Pope because there's no scandal here, right?
Like so I don't
think that David probably would have
any need for Olivia Pope and she
You know, it's funny, like when I look back at the legacy of her, she was so heroic in so many ways, but she also did things that were not great, right?
Like she was out there sleeping with other people's husbands and stealing elections, right?
So I think, you know, when I think about that, I think I know that there are people who are looking to do things that are not fair when it comes to elections, people who are looking to steal.
this election and so it's one of the reasons and future elections and so it's one of the reasons why we have to show up and and vote and make our voices heard so that we can protect democracy protect fair voting for sure for sure
chat
She says, I think you are a phenomenal actress.
Can you share?
All right, y'all quit.
Putting stuff so I can see y'all keep moving.
Can you share what ability or superpower one must have to transform into different emotions slash characters while acting in your craft?
Oh my goodness.
Well, first of all, thank you.
I really appreciate that city girl.
I, you know.
Part of it feels like a blessing like I've I really feel like I was called to be an actor like acting kind of chose me but I've trained really hard I've studied at different studios and with different teachers and in college and Still I still work with a coach.
I'd I every time I get a new job I'm having to create a brand new person from scratch and so I stay working with my coach I stay studying I stay learning and growing so that I can
give each new character what they deserve in terms of pouring my heart into their journey.
So I think that's part of it.
I think part of, for me, part of the journey of acting is to stay teachable, to stay listening, to stay humble in the search because I am, I'm having to kind of start over from scratch every time, which is a gift, but it can also be terrifying.
What
me, earn me!
That's right, that's right.
That's what we need to say to all these politicians, right?
Absolutely.
You don't get to
cruise
if you want
me, earn me.
I just think, you know, now is the moment.
I think if you want to improve your life and the life of the people around you that you love the most, ask yourself,
what more you can do in this moment like you know I we all we're at a turning point in our history in this country and we need to step out of our comfort zone and maybe for you stepping out of your comfort zone means voting even though you don't usually vote or you've never voted before maybe for you stepping out of your comfort zone means
Texting those two cousins that you no need to vote and they're resistant to vote having those tough conversations with people even though we've been taught We're not supposed to talk politics at the dinner table.
Maybe stepping out of your comfort zone
means volunteering a little bit of money if you have some extra money this week to the candidate that needs you most.
Maybe it means volunteering or knocking on doors.
Wherever your comfort zone is, I would just invite you to move that line a little bit and do a little bit more than you've done before.
For me, it's meant, like you said, getting on a plane and coming to a state that I don't live in to
You know, maybe open myself up to criticism, but to knock on doors and to support volunteers and to have my kids crying, telling me they want me to come back home, which I will be home Saturday.
But it's important for me to step outside my comfort zone.
to do what I think is right, because when we look back at the history books, because these moments, these times we're living in, are going to be in the history books.
So when you look back in the history
books,
your kids and your grandkids asked you, where were you?
What did you do in this time?
This is one of those moments, like the Dr. King moments where you have to ask yourself like,
Where was I?
What did I do?
Did I do everything I could to help my neighbors and my fellow citizens, my fellow Milwaukeeans?
So this is, did I say that right, Milwaukeeans?
Yeah.
Is that
Okay, okay.
Whoever you are, do what you can do in this moment.
We need you.
We need you.
Your city needs you.
Your state needs you.
your kids need you, your elders need you, this country needs you.
It's just really like Wisconsin, you have the opportunity to help defend the dream of what this country can be.
We've never really lived up to it, but we have an opportunity to walk closer and closer to real freedom and justice for
I might play one on TV.
I mean, before you go to sleep tonight, you need to kiss them kids and say a prayer.
Those are the
things.
But yes, make a plan to vote and text.
Let's say five.
Let's say five people that you love because listen.
in Wisconsin, these elections time and time again, it comes down to less than 1%, which means like a handful of people per district.
So just in your tech, you know, you go on your, your like school mom chat thread.
I got a cousin's chat.
I got a school mom's chat.
I got a friends at work chat.
Just get on those and say, like, Hey, does everybody have a plan to vote?
You can send out a few of those texts.
You'll be doing a big service to your democracy.
Nobody's saying you got to join the six, triple eight, but you got to do a little something.
you for having me.
You guys are great.
I'm so grateful.
Thank
Hey Cousin, don't go anywhere.
The lunch break with Rayonetti and maybe Shannon will be right back on the award-winning 1017 The Truth.
You're listening to The Lunch Break with Rayonetti and maybe Shannon, where every discussion is on
truth
For sure.
And I'm happy we got a chance to get the chat involved and read a question from the chat.
And I'm especially happy that it was not really a city girl.
Somebody mentioned it was just her birthday yesterday.
That was a nice birthday tree.
Look at that.
We didn't even come on, man.
We ain't even planned that.
birthday.
cookie So I'm in the barbershop last night right and I'm getting cut getting ready for the interview shots our cuts man cuz got me crispy man, so
I went to, what's the name in?
On the way home, before I went and got my haircut, I had stopped at the gas station, got me some grandma cookies.
And it wasn't no milk at home, so I was upset, so I couldn't have had the cookies.
Divine timing.
But man, when I got home from the barber shop, I was like, man, I got some yard signs, I need to drop off.
I left, man.
I went to the gas station, got me a bigger pack of cookies, and a half gallon of milk, and had me a time.
You hear me?
LaCrisis 70 said Ray and Shannon, you are very respectful.
I think he was talking about Bob.
We was being patient.
Not really a city girl said they are very patient with Bob because you know, Sharon would have chewed Bob up and hung up on.
I've been trying, man.
I was raised to respect my elders.
And I try, even when the going gets rough.
All right.
We had Cherie Harris.
This is epic.
Thanks for joining us, Carrie Washington.
Big shout out.
We had TBR Network 414.
Miss Carrie, baby.
I had to sing in my bed.
That was while you was reading the resume.
He said, you better run that resume down.
I know that's right.
Very accomplished woman right there.
We also have so much meaningful work around voting.
Ms.
B said that.
Jai Horton,
Y'all know she could see all these comments, right?
I need y'all to know everything y'all are saying.
She can see the comments.
It's so many comments.
John Claiborne said, Carrie Washington is so beautiful.
Welcome to Milwaukee.
And then Ms.
B said, yes, make a plan to vote despite all of the contingencies.
Make sure you guys make that plan.
The derail says she is real to me.
I am looking at her.
Look down and
Telling about great show Ray and maybe Shannon love y'all got my heart skipping a beat She said I did not come for this
Man not really a city girl said Carrie can easily cater to the Republican Party and not care about this But she does much respect to her for sure you see a lot of these celebrities basically selling out and just going where the money resides and catering to the people that you know Cutting them big checks, you know and
with the billionaires you got a lot of you got a lot of that going on and it's super disheartening to see and she could easily
play that game, but she's not.
She's staying true to who she is, which we love to see.
Alfonso Dupri also said, go Crawley.
Thank you, Kerry Washington, for your support.
We love you.
Yeah, man.
We got a lot of comments in this chat.
I could read all day.
Jesus.
Hey, we got time now.
We got time now, Bob.
Call us up.
Let's get into this capitalism talk.
But yes, y'all, make sure you make a plan to vote.
Take somebody with you to vote, please.
Bring somebody to lunch with you.

I heard Wave for show.
I knew I heard Big Frank joint.
So, man, it was a great interview, man.
It makes me want to close out with this conversation, Shannon.
Let's talk about people with platforms, right?
Using... Mm-hmm.
their platforms to speak up and not be silent, to encourage people to vote, to go against the narrative of just shut up and dribble or shut up and act or shut up and rap or shut up and entertain, right?
We hear it so many times.
You saw it.
You saw what I had to deal with.
Just advocating for Crowley and the primary.
Yeah, so we gonna um We gonna get that conversation going and then we gonna have a bunch of reads to do when we come back to so
I'm going to get these live breeds in when we come back after break, y'all.

At the time, I was thinking Crowley didn't have the numbers.
Thank God I was wrong.
And man, that's why I be trying to tell people Erin.
It's like they look at people like me and Shannon and don't realize how close we be to elections and politics just because.
You know, we make music or or or content like that doesn't mean we don't have insight or value in certain situations.
And I was just trying to share with folks without.
Insulting people at the same time, asking real questions.
You feel me?
And
David firsthand, so you know what you're talking about.
You know what type of person he is It's not like you're just pulling this information from thin air or just guessing about what type of person you know He is and what type of leader he is So I think that's what makes him more frustrated and too because it's a lot of people that are going crazy about Oh, well this this we've got a few callers that was going down rabbit holes and in conspiracy theories and it was like wait, what are you talking about?
Yeah, man to be told you don't know something just because you're an entertainer or just because you're a rapper or whatever else is insane like We she's an actress, you know, I mean, but she's so knowledgeable Carrie Washington
came on
hear
No, but seriously to hear people try to
To hear people try to act like oh you're actress or you do this for a living you can't have an opinion that's insane Like she's an actress and she was able to come on here and clearly like give us all this information and let her voice to a cause that she believes in that's what I was
so you don't got worried about that Transformer tried to hack you know how them transformers be I'll say y'all bogus for that I live man But uh, yeah, man, um, it was
It was a, it was a great, it was a great interview, man.
So women's event happening as private event.
But if you would like to get some of the information, we could send you some of the information that you would have to register for in order to attend.
I am actually honored.
So it's like Ray Nitty gets to like be a host or a panelist at the Erica Crowley carry women's event.
Wait, what?
Yeah, I get to be on the power.
I was like, well, let's let's let's
Let's do it.
Let's have the conversation, right?
Using your platforms.
Okay.
Not...
belittling or... What's the word I'm looking for?
Thinking that the folks that you don't think is a politician, just because we're not a politician, that don't mean we don't have insight or influence.
And... Right.
We see how
But yes, make a plan to vote, man.
Make a plan to vote.
Please make a plan to vote.
Make a plan to vote.
Early voting is open.
It is open.
As a matter of fact, we're going to read it in the last segment.
But.
Brewers, man.
Brewers about the.
How about them brewers?
How about them brewers, man?
We go see brewers is what time does that get started again?
Like six thirty or something like that, if I can't.
But then the Bucks has moved their home opener to three o'clock.
It is a busy day in the city, man.
I'm going to be outside.
Are you going where to?
Honestly, like I wish I was in Milwaukee today.
I feel very left out.
I'm not gonna lie, you know Nevada is next to Cali so everybody here was I can't stand the Brewers and how they did the Dodgers and I'm like
Some kind of sad to be here this weekend.
If I'm being honest, I wish I was with y'all.
I wish I was celebrating.
I know the energy in the city is super high.
I know everybody has big plans.
You got all these voting events happening.
You got the bugs going.
You got the brewers going.
You know.
Right.
Super sad.
But at least we got these great interviews today.
We had two really good interviews.
So I'll take that.
I'll take it.
Yeah,
Tampa
These Tampa Bay Rays.
Man, but when we come back, y'all, we gonna close this thing out.
We gonna tell y'all where you can go vote at.
for today early.
Meet me somewhere, man, and vote.
Then I'm going to let y'all know what's going on Saturday.
All right?
Saturday, I'm going to be doing some dope at the Creative Corridor.
So we're going to share that when we come back.
Don't go anywhere, y'all.

You ever seen that Instagram video with the little girl?
Is that like the zoo or something?
And then she was like hamburger.
And then she was pointing at the cow.
She was like a burger.
And then the mama was like, stop calling that a burger.
She said, I want cheese on mine.
You haven't seen
