That's just something that was on my mind.

I'm like, first of all, because the polls are closed and you asking this question, if you were genuinely inquiring because you wanted your vote to be sway, you would did that when voting was open.

And that's what I told him.
I was like, it's messed up that it's still not enough when somebody give you all these reasons and tell you the resume is just better.

It proves my point like we will make the black person black man or black woman work so much harder so much harder when they have proven when they have the resume but we will just gladly give it away because somebody just says something that sounds amazing.

He's the only one that has actually gotten things done.
He was the only one that has the relationships across party lines to even have conversations.

Then she said she asked God for a sign and make it direct because she don't do good with subtlety.

Yes, no, it really has been a journey.
So on the journey with Coach Erica was inspired truly just by my journey.
I referenced the journey a lot.
I personally, I'm a real estate investor amongst many other things that I do as far as public speaking.
I'm a published author, social worker by profession.
The list goes on, but the show is all about
highlighting everything when it comes to real estate mindset and money.
So it's an opportunity for me to be able to share my personal experiences throughout my journey with real estate.
I am very open about my financial failures as well as my real estate experience in the hopes that that will reach the people that it needs to reach
and
give them some.
perspective on things and know how to go about real estate and reference to their journey.
And I also believe it applies in other areas as well.
It doesn't necessarily have to be with real estate.
It could just be any venture that you're on.
And then I also like to bring on guest on the show to highlight because I don't think we do enough to highlight the.
The people, there's so many people in the city of Milwaukee that are doing wonderful things that are really out here doing it and making it happen and have a lot of going for themselves.

I've been in real estate for over 20 years.
I was gotten to real estate one year out of high school.
So this is not, this is not new for me.
I've been doing this a very long time.
I have a lot of different experience.
You'll never hear me say that I know it all, but I bring a lot of experience.
So I bring a variety anywhere, possibly you may, you know, in the past, we've had brokers.
We've had realtors.
We've had other investors that, you know, are just in the game bringing.

We've had credit experts.
We've had financial experts.
We've had bankers.
We've had so many people.
The list goes on.
Um, cause there's so much that ties into it.
When you just talk about real estate mindset and money, there's a lot you can cover.

But we want to get into what the journey is actually about with Coach Erica.
Yes.
So if you, for anybody that knows who I am already or follows my platform, it really has been a journey.
As I mentioned the last, uh, before we went to break my journey in real estate started at 19 years old, one year out of high school.
That's, that's how I learned real estate through my own personal experience, my own personal failures.
Um, and so the journey is all about showing people that yes, you can fail.
Yes, you can make mistakes.
Yes, you can have setbacks, but that does that.
does not define your future or define who you are and what you're looking to do.
So the journey is about my personal experience story of where I started and where I'm, where I got to and where I'm at now.
And actually the journey is still going.
So it's not only about empowering, giving perspective, giving knowledge.
Um, it's, it's about just.
Getting people pushed forward not to give up because it's so easy.
I was actually just recently talked about this.
It's so easy on the journey to be able to just be like, this is too hard.
It's too much.
It's not working out.
I don't want to do it no more.
Well, at that point, you got a choice.
Now,
in my opinion, respectfully, if
you
choose to stop, now you are choosing to fail.
But when you pick up and keep going, that's not failure.
You're moving forward on your journey because there's more to come.
And.
The journey is a process, right?
Everything is
a process.
It doesn't happen overnight.
Success doesn't happen overnight.
It takes time.
It has to cook.
It has to prep all the things to get you to that point.
So that's what the journey is about.
And you said something that stood out about, you know, when you stop, when you stop and decide not to continue.
Because it's always good to pause, get a break, regather yourself.
But when you choose to just stop and not move forward, right?
I think that's when we start to let the doubt creep in in our dreams and the things we're trying to do.
What advice do you have for folks, right?
As the coach in a field that could be very, very draining because, you know, in real estate, you see a lot of unseen.
financial issues that come out.
Absolutely.
I'll be the first to put it out there.
So
what?
So in real estate in particular, cause we all know there's a lot of different angles to real estate.
As far as what you can do, are you going to be an investor?
Are you going to focus on property management?
Are you going to do development?
There's so many different things that you can do.
My best advice and it's going to sound very simple, but it's what it is.
Don't stop.
Keep going.
Get the right people in your circle.
to for that encouragement that supports the people around you that's in the same line of work that understand that you can have those conversation with who can help you break down and process things.
So, you know, maybe if you're experiencing a real estate deal and it's not going the way you thought it was going to go.
Um, cause sometimes I'll speak to flipping people a flip a house.
You have a whole plan coming into a flip.
You've done your numbers.
You have everything ready to go.
You got your timeline.
You got your team and guess what?
Something happens that disrupts everything.
everything that you thought was gonna go the way it's gonna go.
And now it's not gonna go that way.
But that's where it comes into play, like going to your point, take a pause.
Now let me tap into some of my sources and let's process this.
Let's process where I'm at in this process currently.
What's working, what's not working?
How can you pivot to make it get back on track the way you need to?
And then you maneuver and you work through the process and you go from there, but you don't stop, you keep going.
And I can't stress that enough.
And just to bring everything full circle, when I think back to 2013, my first investment property is sold as a short sale for $15,000 cash to a real estate investor.
I walked away broke, no savings, no nothing, complete loss.
I had an option then to say, you know what, I'm done.
But instead I understood where I was at.
I said, take my pause.
And we gonna work through this.
I'm gonna gain everything I need to gain and I'm not gonna give up here and I'm gonna keep going and I'm gonna keep pushing forward.
And that's what brought me back to 2017 on this journey.
And I've been in real estate back since 2017 and I haven't looked back since.
And that was a promise that I made to myself in 2013.
All I needed was one property to bring me back.
And when I bring, come back with that one property, it's no stopping me.
I'm not, I'm not taking back steps.
I'm only moving forward.
And so I speak everything that I speak.
I speak from experience.
I'm not going to tell anything, anybody, anything that I haven't personally experienced.
And that's why I can't encourage enough.
Even if it's not real estate, maybe it's business, maybe you working on getting a, your degree in college, whatever that looks like for you, advancing in your current profession, don't give up.
It's always going to be obstacles.
It's not going to be easy.
Success is not easy.
And then if anybody told you it's going to be easy, that's not true.
There's going to be challenges and it's going to be obstacles.
But how do you maneuver?
How do you pivot?
How do you keep going forward when you're faced with those obstacles and challenges?
That's a great question for me.
It's about legacy.
That's what keeps me going I look at the bigger picture of what am I trying to accomplish a lot of times, you know You wake up people think it's about me.
It's not about me.
It's never been about me So when I you know, I process my why why am I doing everything that I'm doing?
Why do I put the work in every day?
Why do I keep going when the challenges get hard when I could just be like I'm done with this I don't want to do this no more today is the day I stopped I think about what is my
Why?
What's the bigger picture for coach Erica?
The bigger picture for me is my nephews, my nieces, my family, people that I don't even know, complete strangers, because the work starts with us as individuals.
Everybody has the opportunity to be a cycle breaker.
Everybody has the opportunity to be a game changer.
The question is, how bad do you want it?
How bad do you want to see?
And for me personally, I want to see change.
I don't want.
My generation is ahead to struggle.
I don't want them to lack financial literacy.
I want
them to
understand from the start how to manage money, you know, back to the basics.
So in short, it's the why.
It's the change for my family and the future for me, creating legacy.
So honestly, to make it real quick and short before break, this is why it's called a journey.
It's so many hats and things that I'm doing now, Shannon, that honestly came and was birthed as part of what I like to call this journey to success.
Um, initially when I started out, like I said, I didn't aspire to be a real estate investor.
It kind of just happened.
I went with it, didn't do well, let it came back to it.
And when I came back, everything just started aligning.
Um, that's how you got, um, coach Erica, that's how you got coach Erica, you know, pushing and working with people on their journey to success.
That then birthed into coach Erica publishing two books that then.
uh, birthed into coach Erica is now a public speaker that then birthed into coach Erica is now being casted on TV stations, which we can talk about that later.
That's coming out this fall, but that has birthed into so many different things.
And that's why I cannot stress enough.
Keep going on your journey to success.
You will be amazed of what comes out of that.

Well, we want to talk about your community impact that you have in the city.
So tell us about some of the things that you have going on in the city.
So, um, kind of going back part of that journey to success that did birth my business, which is Odum investments and property management.
We are right here local in the city of Milwaukee.
Um, we, uh, again, our real estate investors and we also are a property management company as well too, but.
Our mission at Odom Investments is we strive to provide not only affordable housing, but we do that while changing communities and bringing life back to homes.
I specifically want to focus on the changing communities part.
The communities is strong for me.
And
maybe
that's cause for a lot of reasons, but another hat in my career life, I'm actually a licensed social worker.
So I'm really big on community.
I'm really big on impact.
And so one,
place that lays dear my heart is working with you.
I do a lot to support you and you know just everything not just financial literacy base but just everything to help them be the best version of them.
And so this Saturday August 15th at our office on 4011 West Capitol Drive we are having
meet and greet and support the youth.
And this event is going to take the community.
I can't do it along y'all, but what it's about is giving local youth entrepreneurs the opportunity to be highlighted, to showcase their brands.
But it's deeper and it's deeper because yes, we want them to come.
We want them to sell out.
We don't want them to leave the event with any products, right?
That's the goal.
But the bigger picture is think about all the skillsets that they're getting.
planning behind how do you set up for your event?
How do you make sure you have enough product?
Are you marketing and showcasing and branding on your end outside of what we're doing for you?
When you get to the event getting yourself together is your presentation, right?
Right?
How do you get people over to your table?
How do you interact with your potential client or customer?
What does that conversation look like?
And especially that's important in today's world because our youth are so like

social media.
You don't have to be a real person with social media You could be whoever you want to be because I don't have to talk to you.
I don't have to look you in the eye I don't have to you know, annunciate.
I don't have to do any of that But when you have that potential client and sometimes all it takes is that one right person that can change the dynamic
of your
whole entire business When that person's in front of you is your presentation on point.
Are you ready or do you have the sale so?
It's deeper in giving them the skill sets.
I'm super excited.
The kids are super excited.
We have eight vendors, local youth that are gonna be here showcasing their brand.

The event is from 9 a.m.
to 12 p.m.
I want every youth to be sold out.
And not only that, the support we, especially in today's world, not just the city of Milwaukee, but everywhere, there's so much going on with youth, right?
and we highlight a lot about the things that are going wrong.

That's doing something good.
So let's lean in on them and give them the recognition that they deserve.

So that's a program that's been going now for a little over a year and a half, that's specifically for youth ages 17 to 23.
With our recent partnership this year, we've been able to now make sure not only do
We have the opportunity to bring teens on who want to learn about real estate specifically.
They get to come and work with us for 90 days,
they get to get paid.
So that was like a super huge thing this year.
So, um, you get the experience, but you also get compensated every week as well.
community.
Community.
We got to get back to the basics.
Get back to community.
Just genuine community support.
Just showing up.
being a part of something positive.
It's the little things like this that I think we forget about that goes a long way and that contributes to that part of building community.
Sometimes a person can just be riding by and just the visual of the site of community and seeing the togetherness makes an impact.
So sometimes people just need to see it so
can repeat it and it can become a norm.
So just building community.
And on your journey.
We've been trying.
You never know who you impact.
You know, right?
Everybody is watching
when you think they're not watching you.
Trust me, I learned that they
watching you
OK.
You every day are making an impact and encouraging somebody to
better, to be a better asset for their community, to be a better asset for their family and the people around them.

I think another point we should focus on is who's going to fill that seat for the Milwaukee County executive as a Milwaukee County executive.

Yes, no.
It really has been a journey.
So on the journey with Coach Erica was inspired truly just by my journey.
I referenced the journey a lot.
I personally, I'm a real estate investor amongst many other things that I do as far as public speaking.
I'm a published author, social worker by profession.
The list goes on, but the show is all about highlighting everything when it comes to real estate mindset and money.
So it's an opportunity for me to be able to share my personal experiences throughout my journey with real estate.
I am very open about my financial failures as well as my real estate experience in the hopes that that will reach the people that it needs to reach
and
give them some.
perspective on things and know how to go about real estate and reference to their journey.
And I also believe it applies in other areas as well.
It doesn't necessarily have to be with real estate.
It could just be any venture that you're on.
And then I also like to bring on guest on the show to highlight because I don't think we do enough to highlight.
There's so many people in the city of Milwaukee that are doing wonderful things, that are really out here doing it and making it happen and have a lot of going for themselves.
So I really like to bring emphasis on those individuals to really show and highlight what they're doing and also bring their perspective, their experience as well on

But I always like to say there's a difference when you can bring experience.
I bring experience.
I've been in real estate for over 20 years.
I was gotten to real estate one year out of high school.
So this is not, this is not new for me.
I've been doing this a very long time.
I have a lot of different experience.
You'll never hear me say that I know it all, but I bring a lot of experience.
So I bring a variety anywhere, possibly you may, you know, in the past, we've had brokers.
We've had realtors.
We've had other investors that, you know, are just in the game, bringing.
their perspective.
We've had credit experts.
We've had financial experts.
We've had bankers.
We've had so many people.
The list goes on.
Um, cause there's so much that ties into it.
When you just talk about real estate mindset and money, there's a lot you can cover.
So there's going to be a lot that we're going to cover.
It's going to be a lot of energy, a lot of perspective, a lot of knowledge.

So if you, for anybody that knows who I am already or follows my platform, it really has been a journey.
As I mentioned the last, uh, before we went to break my journey in real estate started at 19 years old, one year out of high school.
That's, that's how I learned real estate through my own personal experience, my own personal failures.
Um, and so the journey is all about showing people that yes, you can fail.
Yes, you can make mistakes.
Yes, you can have setbacks, but that does that.
does not define your future or define who you are and what you're looking to do.
So the journey is about my personal experience story of where I started and where I'm, where I got to and where I'm at now.
And actually the journey is still going.
So it's not only about empowering, giving perspective, giving knowledge.
Um, it's, it's about just.
Getting people pushed forward not to give up because it's so easy.
I was actually just recently talked about this.
It's so easy on the journey to be able to just be like, this is too hard.
It's too much.
It's not working out.
I don't want to do it no more.
Well, at that point, you got a choice.
Now,
in my opinion, respectfully, if
you
choose to stop, now you are choosing to fail.
But when you pick up and keep going, that's not failure.
You're moving forward on your journey because there's more to come.
And.
The journey is a process, right?
Everything is
a process.
It doesn't happen overnight.
Success doesn't happen overnight.
It takes time.
It has to cook.
It has to prep all the things to get you to that point.
So that's what the journey is about.
And you said something that stood out about, you know, when you stop, when you stop and decide not to continue.
Because it's always good to pause, get a break, regather yourself.
But when you choose to just stop and not move forward, right?
I think that's when we start to let the doubt creep in in our dreams and the things we're trying to do.
What advice do you have for folks, right?
As the coach in a field that could be very, very draining because, you know, in real estate, you see a lot of unseen.
financial issues that come
up.
Absolutely.
I'll be the first to put it out there.
So
what?
So in real estate in particular, cause we all know there's a lot of different angles to real estate as far as what you can do.
Are you going to be an investor?
Are you going to focus on property management?
Are you going to do development?
There's so many different things that you can do.
My best advice, and it's going to sound very simple, but it's what it is.
Don't stop.
Keep going.
Get the right people in your circle.
to for that encouragement that supports the people around you that's in the same line of work that understand that you can have those conversation with who can help you break down and process things.
So, you know, maybe if you're experiencing a real estate deal and it's not going the way you thought it was going to go because sometimes I'll speak to flipping people a flip a house.
You have a whole plan coming into a flip.
You've done your numbers.
You have everything ready to go.
You got your timeline.
You got your team.
And guess what?
Something happens that disrupts everything.
everything that you thought was gonna go the way it's gonna go.
And now it's not gonna go that way, but that's where it comes into play.
Like going to your point, take a pause.
Now let me tap into some of my sources and let's process this.
Let's process where I'm in this process currently.
What's working?
What's not working?
How can you pivot to make it get back on track the way you need to?
And then you maneuver and you work through the process and you go from there, but you don't stop.
You keep going.
And I can't stress that enough, and just to bring everything full circle, when I think back to 2013, my first investment property is sold as a short sale for $15,000 cash
to a real
estate investor.
I walked away broke, no savings, no nothing, complete loss.
I had an option then to say, you know what, I'm done.
But instead I understood where I was at.
I said, take my pause.
And we gonna work through this.
I'm gonna gain everything I need to gain and I'm not gonna give up here and I'm gonna keep going and I'm gonna keep pushing forward.
And that's what brought me back to 2017 on this journey.
And I've been in real estate back since 2017 and I haven't looked back since.
And that was a promise that I made to myself in 2013.
All I needed was one property to bring me back.
And when I bring, come back with that one property, it's no stopping me.
I'm not, I'm not taking back steps.
I'm only moving forward.
And so I speak, everything that I speak, I speak from experience.
I'm not gonna tell anybody anything that I haven't personally experienced.
And that's why I can't encourage enough, even if it's not real estate, maybe it's business, maybe you working on getting a, your degree in college, whatever that looks like for you, advancing in your current profession, don't give up.
It's always going to be obstacles.
It's not going to be easy.
Success is not easy.
And then if anybody told you it's going to be easy, that's not true.
There's going to be challenges and it's going to be obstacles, but how do you maneuver?
How do you pivot?
How do you keep going forward when you're faced with those obstacles and challenges?
so
That's a great question for me.
It's about legacy.
That's what keeps me going I look at the bigger picture of what am I trying to accomplish a lot of times, you know, you wake up people think
It's about me.
It's not about me.
It's never been about me.
So when I, you know, I process my why, why am I doing everything that I'm doing?
Why do I put the work in every day?
Why do I keep going when the challenges get hard when I could just be like, I'm done with this.
I don't want to do this no more.
Today is the day I stop.
I think about what is my why?
What's the bigger picture for Coach Erica?
The bigger picture for me.
is my nephews, my nieces, my family, people that I don't even know, complete strangers, because the work starts with us as individuals.
Everybody has the opportunity to be a cycle breaker.
Everybody has the opportunity to be a game changer.
The question is, how bad do you want it?
How bad do you want to see it?
And for me personally, I want to see change.
I don't want my generations ahead to struggle.
I don't want them to lack financial literacy.
I want them
to
understand from the start,
how to manage money, you know, back to the basics.
So in short, it's the why.
It's the change for my family and the future for me, creating legacy.
So, honestly, to make it real quick and short before break, this is why it's called a journey.
It's so many hats and things that I'm doing now, Shannon, that honestly came and was birthed as part of what I like to call this journey to success.
Initially, when I started out, like I said,
didn't aspire to be a real estate investor.
It kind of just happened.
I went with it, didn't do well, let it came back to it.
And when I came back, everything just started aligning.
That's how you got Coach Erica.
That's how you got Coach Erica, you know, pushing and working with people on their journey to success.
That then birthed into Coach Erica publishing two books.
That then...
uh, birthed into coach Erica is now a public speaker that then birthed into coach Erica is now being casted on TV stations, which we can talk about that later.
That's
coming out this fall, but that has birthed into so many different things.
And that's why I cannot stress enough.
Keep going on your journey to success.
You will be amazed of what comes out of that.

Well, we want to talk about your community impact that you have in the city.
So tell us about some of the things that you have going on in the city.
So kind of going back.
part of that journey to success that did birth my business, which is Odum investments and property management.
We are right here local in the city of Milwaukee.
Um, we, uh, again, our real estate investors and we also are a property management company as well too.
But our mission at Odum investments is we strive to provide not only affordable housing, but we do that while changing communities and bringing life back to homes.
I specifically want to focus on the changing communities part.
Um,
The the communities is strong for me and
maybe
that's because for a lot of reasons, but another hat in my career life.
I'm actually a licensed social worker.
So I'm really big on community.
I'm really big on impact.
And so one place that lays deer in my heart is working with youth.
I do a lot to support youth and
you know, just everything, not just financial literacy base, but just everything to help them be the best version of them.
And so this Saturday, August 15th at our office on 4011 West Capital Drive, we are having meet and greet and support the youth.
And this event is going to take the community.
I can't do it along y'all, but what it's about is giving local youth entrepreneurs the opportunity to be highlighted.
to showcase their brands.
But it's deeper and it's deeper because yes, we want them to come.
We want them to sell out.
We don't want them to leave the event with any products, right?
That's the goal.
But the bigger picture is think about all the skill sets that they're getting, the planning behind how do you set up for your event?
How do you make sure you have enough product?
Are you marketing and showcasing and branding on your end outside of what we're doing for you?
When you get to the event, getting yourself together is your presentation, right?
Right?
How do you get people over to your table?
How do you interact with your potential client or customer?
What does that conversation look like?
And especially that's important in today's world because our youth are so like.
Just media right
social
media.
You don't have to be a real person with social media You could be whoever you want to be because I don't have to talk to you.
I don't have to look you in the eye I don't have to you know, annunciate.
I don't have to do any of that But when you have that potential client and sometimes all it takes is that one right person that can change the dynamic
of your
whole entire business When that person's in front of you is your presentation on point.
Are you ready or do you have the sale so?
It's deeper in giving them the skill sets.
I'm super excited.
The kids are super excited.
We have, we have eight vendors, um, local youth that are going to be here showcasing their brand.
So if you are available on Saturday, make sure you come support them.
The event is from nine AM to 12 PM.
I want every youth to be sold out.
And not only that, the support we, especially in today's world, not just the city of Milwaukee, but everywhere, there's so much going on with youth, right?
And we highlight a lot about the things that are going wrong.
But here we have you taking time out of their Saturday.
That's doing something positive.
That's doing something good.
So let's let's lean in on them and give them the recognition that they deserve.

You know, right here with the business, we have, I'm actually, we built a in-house internship program.
It's called the Scale Up Journey Internship Program.
So that's a program that's been going now for a little over a year and a half, that's specifically for youth ages 17 to 23.
With our recent partnership this year, we've been able to now make sure not only do
We have the opportunity to bring teens on who want to learn about real estate specifically.
They get to come and work with us for 90 days, but now they get to get paid.
So that was like a super huge thing this year.
So, um, you get the experience, but you also get compensated every week as well.
Community we got to get back to the basics get back to community genuine community support, you know just showing up
being a part of something positive.
It's the little things like this that I think we forget about that goes a long way and that contributes to that part of building community.
Sometimes a person can just be riding by and just the visual of the sites of community and seeing the togetherness makes an impact.
So sometimes people just need to see it so they can repeat it and it can become a norm.
So just building community.
Yes.
And on your journey.
We've been trying.
You never know who you impact.
You know, right?
Everybody is watching
when you think they're not watching you.
Trust me, I learned that they
watching you
OK.
You every day are making an impact and encouraging somebody to
better, to be a better asset for their community, to be a better asset for their family and the people around them.

I'm waiting to see what happens next.
But in this particular case, back in May, I had the opportunity to go to Miami and be filmed for a TV station called Inside Success TV Network.
So I will be on an episode called Women in Power.
That's going to be coming out.
I'm guessing probably sometime this fall now that I've officially approved the production.
So I did get to see it.
I'm excited for people to see it.
I have the episode.
I haven't even showed my family.
I'm like, no, I'm not showing anybody.
