bicycle and they didn't have bike lanes and I usually drove on the gravel and I stayed out of the
way of most cars on the

And so, you know, you'll get a biking person looking for these bike racks.
And these people are crazy.

And they take it away.

And it's not working out so well.
So apparently, Pakistan had called and said, yeah, he'd be a great guy.
You really should have him do that.
And he wanted Modi from India to say, yeah, to call up and say, yeah, he should be nominated for the Nobel Prize, Nobel Prize.
And the reason being is that I brokered the deal.
And of course, when he broached this idea with Modi, Modi bristled and said,

There's no
way that's happening.
He slams out the 50% tariffs on India.
And so I think that what would really help things, if you guys would come up with a new prize that you could offer for the president, better than the Nobel Prize, you know, over in that Scandinavian company, it could be the John and Gordy World Peace Prize.

You have small American companies that have to pay the tariffs.
Cantor Fitzgerald offers to loan the companies a small amount of money to cover 20% of those tariffs.
In exchange, if those tariffs end up getting reversed by the courts,
Cantor Fitzgerald will collect 100% of the refund of those tariffs.
It is absolutely predatory lending.
And here's the thing.
It is the Commerce Secretary himself.
Running the scam he controls the tariffs in the first place
Big surprise Senator Ron Wyden and Elizabeth Warren asked in a letter to Brandon
Lutnik CEO of Cantor Fitzgerald and son of Commerce Secretary for details on work that this tariff refund is all about.
They've got financial products created by Cantor Fitzgerald that would allow clients to hedge against business risk posed by the uncertainty over the tariffs.
Specifically Cantor has created a litigation finance product that places the company in the position of betting that the courts will strike down.
Trump's tariffs.
They're betting against the tariffs.

Wisconsin?

do people know?

So we've got more workers at our grocery stores here in Madison who are joining unions.
Oh, really?
I just talked to some folks from the Festival Foods over on East Wash earlier this week, and they told me all about how they just voted to join a union back on the 14th.
And 72% of their employees voted to join basically the grocery workers union that represents like almost a million grocery store workers across the country.
We've seen a union membership drop the last few decades across the country, but at least here in Madison, at least here in grocery stores, we're seeing an increase.
This is at least the ninth that I could count where the employees are part of a union.
Yeah, interesting.
Now I know that we know that most of the federal workers lost their union ability.
Mm-hmm.
That's
right now I understand the Democrats are introducing a bill that is going to try to get rid of Act 10.
Yeah, right
That's right.
Well, it's also going to be in front of the state Supreme Court at some point here and now that there's a liberal bent will
We'll see how that turns out when they finally take it up and decide to release an opinion.
But Democrats are trying to repeal Act 10 with these new labor bills.
They're also trying to strengthen laws against misclassification.
I knew this concept.
I didn't know this is what it's called.
That's basically where lots of construction companies can call their employees independent contractors when they're not.
And basically that gets them out of providing benefits, paying payroll taxes, paying into unemployment.
and that kind of stuff.
So the law or the bill that they have proposed would make that.
a whole lot tougher for companies to do.
It would also reinstate prevailing wage laws, which is basically where construction workers working in any specific area have to make in the same ballpark as what other workers make in that county, which Republicans repealed Wisconsin's prevailing wage law in 2015.
So all the Democrats in our state assembly and state senate are pushing for these bills, but
They're not the ones in charge.
So there would have to be some Republican support, which I think is highly unlikely, but they have proposed them anyway.
That's kind of the position Democrats are in here in the state legislature.
And
that puts the Republicans in between a rock and a hard place because, I mean, opposing benefits for our...
Working class out there.

I mean, you know, this is a what do they call it?
It's what kind of economy is this here?
It's a
gig
economy gig economy, right?
You know with with the gig economy in place We've got to protect the workers at this point.
This is something new This is cropped up on them and it snuck up on them and they just aren't ready or prepared to take you know Some kind of action in order to protect all these workers out there.

they're going to react to this.
Like you say, they probably will oppose something like this, but at their own risk, I guess.
Well, an advocate say we've got to do something.
We've ranked in the bottom 10 states for wage growth, Wisconsin did last year.
So, you know, the people in labor unions and just labor advocates in general say we've got to do something here because, you know, we can talk all day long about
how high inflation has risen and how hard it is for the average person to make ends meet, even just compared to five years ago.

So last November, while you are under consideration to become Secretary of Health and Human Services,
Mr. Kennedy, you said, quote, if vaccines are working for somebody, I'm not going to take them away.

No ifs ands or buts.
You would not take away vaccines from anyone who wanted them.
Then last week, you announced the COVID-19 vaccine is no longer approved for healthy people under the age of 65.
In announcing the change, you said the vaccine will be available for anyone who wants it.
Now, obviously,
Both things cannot be true at the same moment.
So let's clear this up right now, Secretary Kennedy.
Will you tell America that all adults and all children over six months of age are eligible to get a COVID booster at their local pharmacy today?
Anybody can get the booster.
I'm sorry?
Anybody can get it.
So you're saying that is now the official rule of HHS
anybody is eligible to get a booster by just walking into the pharmacy.
It's not recommended for healthy people.

If you don't recommend, then the consequence of that in many states
is that you can't walk into a pharmacy and get one.
It means insurance companies.

Don't have to cover the $200 you're so cost.
As Senator Dr. Cassidy said, you are effectively denying people vaccines.
We're not going to recommend a product for which there's no clinical data for that indication, which is that what I should be doing?
What you should be doing is honoring your promise that you made when you were looking to get confirmed in this job.

So UW Health, they had their eye on my story, and they're going to be filming my comeback for a story on my journey back to the stage.

The show that I'm playing, it's going to be a fundraiser for a local drummer, Big John Smolek.
from the band Go Play God, and he was hospitalized with severe diabetes for over a year.
So he's got some major medical expenses.
We're going to try and help him out.

What can we expect to see Sunday?
It's an important game and that's not some sort of sports guy hype.
You know, Madelof Fleur went one and five last
year
in the division.
And even though he got the team to the playoffs, it was a tough division.
The Vikings had a great record as well.
but you know you got a new boss in town this said policy took over and he said you know the summer when we got to do a little interview form for civic with me radio stations that uh... hey you know uh... and matt and brian goody kent the gm uh... their contracts for coming up uh... uh... they can have an extension it goes well i don't like to have guys you know it's a lame duck but they've got two years left so we'll see what happens this
season
Oh, okay.
Well,
yeah.
Wow.
I did not know that.
Yeah.
So, so that's, that's the, you know, he just took over in July and, and then, you know, a week ago, uh, you know, there'd been this, this, uh, stuff going on all summer with Micah Parsons, uh, who's this, uh, you know, pass rush expert, excellent, you know, defensive end and.
He thought he had a deal with Jerry Jones in March, but Jerry just wanted to talk to the player, not the agent.
And then that thing got messed up, and then there was a holdout all summer long.
And then people started suggesting that maybe the Packers were one of the teams that were interested.
And it turns out they were, because they made the trade.
And I'm with Mark Murphy, the outgoing president after CEO and president for 17 years, and a little press conference about four o'clock.
I texted some of our producers back in Madison, and I can't keep my heads up on this story, because I see some stuff from the networks that they hadn't posted yet.
I saw some behind the scenes activity.
Keep an eye on this for me.
So I met at the press conference, and about a couple minutes into it, one of the guys is saying goodbye to Marcus.
He's going into the team Hall of Fame, the Packers Hall of Fame.
and they're reviewing his career and then one of the people but stand behind the camera said uh... he has been reporting that the packages traded for michael parsons and he just laughed although they didn't know that's probably a higher something
He retired in July, so he'd been out of the office.
And then a couple of years later, or a couple of minutes later, rather, a reporter who he trusts says, Mark, now the Green Bay Press Gazette is confirming.
They've traded for Micah Parsons.
And he was stunned.
What are these guys doing?
And he said, what do they get for him?
So that's how this thing came in.
And now the question is, is this guy going to be able to play on Sunday?
Because he's had this back injury that's got into the publicity the last week or so.
So finally, I can't believe all these networks, no one asked the guy, hey, how'd this happen?
Which I did.
I'm the guy, you know, I'm from Beloit.
I just asked questions.
You know, if you came walking to the studio with a cast on, I'm probably asking, well, what'd you do?
How'd you do that?
Yeah.
That's just where we are in Wisconsin.
So you asked the
question.
It happened weightlifting.
It happened weightlifting.
It was weightlifting during the Cowboys camp.
And, you know, he heard something, you know, pop a little bit.
But, you know, they seem to think that he can get through this with just some healing.
And, you know, so he took a steroid program that the Cowboys get him started on.
So he's trying to get out there in the field on Sunday's game against the Lions.
Wow.
Oh, really?
So he's going to try and play?
Yeah, he's been
limited in practice, as they
say.
But at the end of the day, might be a little painkiller about two o'clock.
Wow.

So, so let's start out with what's happening on Monday with idea fest.
Okay, well, we start out Monday with John Nichols, our associate editor, we'll be with Kate Shaw, who's a wonderful
Big thinker, law professor, someone who's clerked for Supreme Court justice and is a big figure in Washington.
She also happens to be married to Chris Hayes, the MSNBC host who John works with.
And that'll be fun.
We've tried to, over time, bring in some younger
speakers, people who kind of represent not my baby boom generation of political thinkers.
And Kate's one of those.
So she's at six Monday night, followed by the great Maureen Dowd, the Pulitzer Prize winning columnist for the New York Times.
She publishes in the Times on Sundays.
And she's
Often, you know, sometimes controversial, but always interesting.
And she'll be in conversation with her longtime friend, David Marinus, who of course is doing seven different moderations for us next week.
That's the first.
So that'll be a great conversation.
You know, a quick anecdote.
David met Marine.
David was working for the Washington Post.
Marine was working for the Washington Star, which has not existed for a long time, covering the Maryland suburbs in the late 1970s.
And I was there.
I'd gotten out of graduate school and I was working for a newspaper called the Montgomery County Sentinel, Montgomery County, Maryland, where Bob Woodward had worked before I got there.
And so I was in this press room that had all these
who knew all these future superstars?
Anyway, it'll be great to see her.
And I think that'll be a good discussion.
It probably is.

And OK, so let's move on to a few other things.

Jennifer Rubin was a longtime columnist for the Washington Post.
She resigned amid all the controversy around Jeff Bezos relationship and Norm Eisen is a longtime Washington lawyer.
He's been in the news recently representing
the person who's trying to be fired from the CDC so it's timely.
They created an online publication called The Contrarians and that's been existed for about a year and so they're first Tuesday night and then we're delighted to have Stacey Abrams from Georgia on our stage.
She was born in Madison.
Obviously, your audience knows she's a huge voting right activist and a major courageous figure in American politics.
She's great.
I
mean, I'm amazed that more people aren't talking about her.
Maybe they will be in the coming year or two.
Yeah, I think, yeah.
Before the mid midterms here.
Yeah, definitely and I'm a big fan of Jennifer Rubin who by the way was very very conservative her column was very conservative until Trump came around Suddenly I'm thinking wow listen to her.
I mean she's really out there, you know
She's great.
She definitely is.
Yeah.
So that, you know, the interesting thing about Stacy Abrams, he also writes a lot of fixed books that are fiction.
So she's a, she's a kind of a Renaissance woman and it'll be fun to have her.
Yeah.
Now on Wednesday, I know that civic media is involved on Wednesday and Friday.
We've got some live broadcasts I think in the in the mix there for for Wednesday and Friday.
So let's move on to Wednesday.
Yeah,
let's find out
what's going
on.
Well, Wednesday, Wednesday has a session with another young brilliant journalist, Historia named Garrett Groff, who Marinus
who is moderating this session, thinks could be one of the most interesting because of his, he's one of the important thinkers.
He does a pod, a newsletter called Doomsday Scenarios, which is around the topic of whether things are really as bad as they appear.
And he's also an author, has a new book on.
Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
He'll be on first and Marinus thinks that's kind of a hidden gem that people won't recognize that name immediately.
And David said he's really looking forward to that.
After that, we have David with Tony Evers.
And I'm really looking forward to that.
David surprised me by saying he had never met Tony.
David
is, of course, this...
icon, you know, local affairs.
And so I'm really looking forward to that conversation, kind of how the governor got to his decision not to seek a third term, the experience of being a bulwark for eight years against a gerrymandered Republican legislature.
So that should be a fun discussion.
Yeah, you should warn Meredith and
case, you know, Evers slips in a few profanities.
He oftentimes surprises a lot of people.
Such an unassuming person.

Okay, let's go to Thursday.
Well, Thursday is kind of off the board at this point.
It's our celebration of journalism over at the Edgewater, and it's a sellout at this point.
It's Marinus and Gene Robinson of the late of the Washington Post.
Now, you can review it on YouTube after, but the tickets are sold out for that.
So we probably want to move on to Friday.
Friday has another brilliant younger journalist, Evan Osnos, who's
He works for the New Yorker.
He's lived in China, covered written books.
Just a brilliant guy.
He's going to be on stage first with David.
I just have to say, as an aside, one of my favorite national podcasts is the political scene by the New Yorker.
And it has Evan and it has Jane Mayer, who was here a couple of years ago.
And the third person is Susan Glasser, who was here last year with her husband, Peter Baker, the New York Times.
Getting to get them together, but we've gotten all three of them on stage.
And that'll be in Evan wrote a book that came out this summer that's cleverly titled the haves and have yachts discussion with Evan Osnos about about what's happening with the plutocracy in America.
And then second Friday night will be John Nichols with Tim Walls.
And that will be that will be fun and colorful.
I'm sure.
Governor Walz has been continuing to be out there.
I haven't seen this week.
He's been, he's two term governor of Minnesota and I, I, I, if I missed it, he's making a decision about whether to seek a third term, but I think he'll, he'll be.
Entertaining and gauging on our stage Friday night,
and I think we'll probably be broadcasting that that's a possibility
that I believe that yeah, that's on the civic media radio and I'll be
able to hear that.

Okay, and then things wrap up on Saturday.
Yeah, we have four four sessions on Saturday.
I love them all the first one is county executive most a garden and there's such a roads Conway with Nichols talking about the challenge of
leading in our progressive region with the kind of disdain that this White House has for cities like Madison, counties like Dane, Medicaid, other programs, ICE, the whole nine yards.
So that'll be our first session, kicks off at 2.30 on Saturday.
The second one is also a lot of fun.
Ben Wickler, former chair of the Democratic Party, is writing a book.
on how the lessons learned and sort of taking back Wisconsin might apply nationally.
And David Marinus, who's written, I don't know, 15 books, is moderating that.
Both of them, it's kind of fun.
I was preparing the introduction.
They both went to Madison West, and now we're a big national.
Two years apart.
You know, three, four decades apart.
That's second.
Third on the first session on Saturday night is really terrific.
Columbia University, journalism professor emeritus Sam Friedman was here last year and.
did a wonderful job talking about the history of progressivism in the Midwest on a panel and he wanted to come back and I'm just delighted he wanted to come back and he's brought in two huge national experts on Christian nationalism, the rise of Christian nationalism and he shared with me some of the background about how he got here and I think that will be one of the most
intellectually provocative sessions of the whole week.
I really think people will enjoy that.
And then we finish it off with J.B.
Pritzker of Illinois, one of them with J.B.
Pritzker, who shall we say is in the news these days and kind of brings the, is a pretty outspoken, interesting guy.
I might mention that
both Stacy Abrams and JB Pritzker will be interviewed by Karen Tumulty of The Washington Post, who has family connections in the area, but she's wonderful.
She was on the post-opinion section for many, many years.
And your audience probably knows what happened to the post-opinion section with intervening, endorsement, and so on and so forth.
So now she's replaced Dan Balls, who's also an IDFS veteran, as their top national political correspondent.
So that's gonna be fun to have her do those two interviews.

How many
years?
We started it in 2017.
So it's the ninth year.
It's evolved over time.
In the early years, we tended to have even more in-person, smaller sessions so that there'd be more of a smorgasbord to choose among.

That model kind of changed through the pandemic when we were all virtual.
In the last two or three years,
It's become a lot easier for me to recruit speakers like this because we've gotten something on a national reputation.

Well, you know, I picked up your book.
We have a bookshelf over here.
We used to have a stack of books that used to be our mic stand.
Your book was not one of them.
So there your book is 12 ways to save democracy in Wisconsin.
Sadly, of course, you should have actually said the USA because we could use those 12 ways.
But I was paging through it and I got to the section of recusals.
And in there,
you mentioned, the John Doe II investigation that was tossed up by a wonderful partisan Republican Supreme Court.
And it just, it put up red flags.
That was one of the most incredible moments when they said, you know, they just threw that case out.
Yeah, it
was crazy.
So it's just a little background.
This was in 2015.
There was a special prosecutor appointed
He was called the John Doe II prosecutor.
He was looking into whether Scott Walker had violated our campaign finance laws during the recall elections.
What Walker was doing was he's going around Wisconsin and going around the country, sitting on the laps of some of the richest people that he could find and urging them to contribute not to his recall election campaign, not to the Republican Party of Wisconsin, but to some outside
groups, Wisconsin manufacturers and commerce
or
Wisconsin club for growth.
And there was a statute on the books at the time in Wisconsin that said, if you are a candidate for office, you cannot coordinate your activities with outside groups.
So it looked like, wow, this guy's just blatantly violating the law.
Wisconsin Supreme Court then dominated by arch conservatives, took a different approach.
Yes, they
did.
And they gave
Scott Walker a get out of jail free card by saying,
Look, the First Amendment of the United States prohibits the state of Wisconsin from banning coordination between candidates and outside issue advocacy groups.
You know, these groups that say, uh, call, uh, the Democratic candidate for governor and tell him to stop being such a scoundrel, which means don't vote for the Democratic candidate, but they don't use the magic words, vote for or vote against.
Well.
The U.S.
Supreme Court, even in its worst decisions, including Citizens United, has never said that it's okay to coordinate with issue advocacy groups.
In fact, they were really explicit that coordinating with any outside group is just like giving a donation to that candidate.
For a reason.
Yeah.
It's a quick pro quo.
It's corruption.
It gives the appearance of blatant corruption.
But the Wisconsin Supreme Court said,
No, we're going to look at this a different way.
That is the dominant conservatives on it.
And so they threw out the John Doe to prosecution.
They fired the prosecutor and they let Scott Walker walk.
It was
unbelievable.
It was stunning.
Absolutely stunning.
And, you know, Rebecca Bradley, Justice Rebecca Bradley, who isn't running again because she knows she's not going to win it.
We came out and said it was a First Amendment issue.
Oh, yeah.
And the irony is that even
You know, no one could find any... Surely, Abramson, in a great dissent, said, there's no case whatsoever that I could find that this violates the First Amendment, coming from the U.S.
Supreme Court.
But Rebecca Bradley, who we call the bad Bradley, on the court, and thank God she's not running again.
Good riddance to Rebecca Bradley.
You know, she just invented this out of whole cloth.
Yeah, it was crazy stuff.
And I had a little story, you know, in radio, we were always taking pizza out for lunches.
And once a week, we'd take a pizza out and have a lunch.
And we went to Shirley Abrahamson.
I used to call her that.
And we have pizza.
And she was one of the nicest people in the world.
And she was really done bad by the Republicans.
She really was.
She was Chief Justice.
Highly respected Shirley Abrahamson.
And then they changed the way that you will appoint or elect Chief Justice.
And they stripped her of her Chief Justice title, and so she was a justice.
But she was a tremendous jurist.
And she was.
And often on a short list for U.S.
Supreme Court when there was a Democratic president.
Absolutely.
Now, I want to get into the topic of recusals, because that is the other
big issue that came out during this John Doe two thing that I want to get into.
And can you explain a little bit about the recusal process in summary only because we're going to have you back after the break.
Is that
OK?
Yeah.
I mean recusal means getting off the court.
Not sitting on a case when you have a conflict of interest.
Yeah, and two of the Republican justices Gableman and Prosser Had benefited by more than a million dollars of expenditures by the very outside groups.
Yeah that the John Doe to prosecutor was investigating Wisconsin Club for growth in Wisconsin manufacturers and commerce So they had a blatant conflict of interest here, and they should have gotten off
the case, they were requested to do so by, I believe, the legal women voters, and they refused to do so.
Even with that conflict of interest, they stayed on.
They wanted to give Walker this, you know, get out of jail free card.
And they did.
Yes,
they did.
You know, it is so amazing how corrupt the conservative Supreme Court was in this state, you know, and it's so...
It's so nice to see something where it's a little more balanced.
We have seen votes go either way with the new liberal Justices on the court.
Yeah, they were a terrible embarrassment.
Yeah, the Republican and David
Prosser did not have a good record.
No, nor the choking incident against the Good Bradley.
It wasn't a good one either.
No, that was
a bad moment too.

Good morning.
Good to have you with us.
We have you with us, uh, just about every Wednesday.
So, good to see you
again.
Substack author and former head of the Wisconsin Democracy campaign.
Matt was the person who followed you as the leader of that.
Matt
Rothschild.
Yeah.
Did you run into him in the hallway?
I'm guessing he took the elevator and I took the stairs, but I missed him.
I was listening to you guys talking with him on the way into the studio and I thought maybe I would bump into him, but no.
You know this thing you know where Trump wants to go into these cities because they're just out of control too much crime The crime is actually a gun problem, and it's just an avoidance issue for them, you know bringing in the National Guard.
It's all a side
track.
It's all distracting us from the actual problem of guns being the problem.
And we had that recent shooting in Minnesota, you know, the two children killed in a Christian school.
And by the way, the shooter is, you know, like
He had every reason in the world that he wanted to go and shoot somebody.
He was against everything.
I mean, you can't nail him as a left or right person.
He had every one of the reasons why he wanted to go out and shoot somebody.
And that was the crazy part.
And they call him transgender as well.
And he's not really truly transgender.
He just was kind of curious about having some other way of referencing himself.
But that was it.
You know, so it isn't like another transgender individual going out there shooting people, which is, you know, another stereotype that the right wing would like to at least implant in our brains.
It's not true, of course.
But what do you think about the your latest substack is in regards to these shootings?
Yeah, I, you know, just yesterday, I was talking to someone I've known for years and much to my surprise, find out that she actually went to that school.
as a child and has a close connection to that school.
And then I also heard from somebody, another longtime acquaintance who knows the family of one of the children who was killed and particularly has a close connection to the grandparents.
So here in Wisconsin, there are people for whom this hits really close to home because these are
these are personal connections.
But to me, that's the thing that our society has to come to terms with.
It's like people in America are taking a calculated risk that these things happen, but it won't happen at my child's school or in our church.
It'll be somebody else.
And so we rationalize this continued unwillingness to deal with the fact that we allow people to go in and readily purchase, easily purchase weapons that are only designed to kill large numbers of people.
And, you know, and armor piercing bullets.
30 round magazines so that you can fire off a couple of dozen shots in a matter of a couple of seconds.
But our society still keeps rationalizing.
And the politicians, of course, reflect this.
They offer their thoughts and prayers, but they offer no action.
But we've got a society-wide problem here.
that is at the root of the gun problem that we have.
And it's this fact that America is armed to the teeth.
We have had hundreds of millions of guns in this country.
And people want it that way.
They want to be heavily armed for whatever reason, whatever they're scared of, I don't know.
But it sure isn't just to go hunting.
Cause there's just no, and I mentioned this in the article.
If you need, if you need an assault weapon that can fire off 30 rounds in a matter of seconds to kill a deer, you're a, you're a miserable hunter.
You
are no darn good at it.
And you really should get out of the, get out of the woods.
But you know what?
People, people want to be heavily armed.
And that's the cultural problem that we have to come to terms with if we're ever going to solve this.
And every other nation in the world doesn't have the same problem that we have with all of these mass shootings and killings in movie theaters and churches and schools.
It's a uniquely American problem.
It's protection of some of the paraphernalia as well into the bump stocks.
The other thing that I can't understand, and I don't know how the courts are always deciding that it's an infringement on the Second Amendment, but a bump stock is not preventing you from having a gun.
So I don't know why we can't regulate all of the paraphernalia and all the extras that go with firearms.
Why can't we regulate that stuff?
It doesn't prevent somebody from owning a firearm, which that's their argument.
It doesn't stop them.
Why can't we regulate this stuff?
I remember hearing Tom Hartman mention at the end of a little.
that he had about guns, and that is that some countries require a insurance policy.
And I just thought, wow, having private industry regulate guns would be a great way to do it, because they're not gonna give an insurance policy
to
somebody who they think is a
risk.
There's nothing inconsistent with the Second Amendment and requiring gun owners to be licensed.
Yes.
And guns to be registered.
Exactly.
And have an insurance policy, a liability insurance for gun owners in case something bad happens.
None of that is inconsistent with the Second Amendment.
And the Second Amendment, those who believe that we should be free to bear arms, how extreme do you take that position?
Does it extend to
weapons of mass destruction, should you be able to possess nuclear weapons because you have a Second Amendment, right?
That's preposterous, but that's just how ridiculous this debate has become.
Of course, it's no violation or infringement on the Second Amendment to say that you shouldn't be able to have a 30-round magazine.
to fire off all these rounds and that the bullet, it's not an infringement on the Second Amendment to say they shouldn't be armor piercing.
And you shouldn't be able to have a military-style assault weapon, which is only, its only purpose is to kill people and large numbers of people.
But there's a cultural unwillingness to grapple with the
with what's at the root of this problem.
Talking with Mike McCabe here, sub-stack blogger and author, and you're talking about military-style assault weapons.
Now
during the Clinton administration, they were able to ban those,
at least for a time.
And mass killings dropped.
Way down.
Way down.
And then when the assault...
weapons ban was lifted, there was a huge spike, well over 100% spike in mass killing.
Why can't we get to that place again?
Exactly.
And you know, the reality again is that America is armed to the teeth and likes it that way.
And that's what we have to come to terms with is the cultural underpinnings of this problem.
Well, I think it's a misinterpretation of the Second Amendment as well.
Of course.
I mean, I've been blaming the Supreme Court for almost every one of the problems that we have today.
No constitutional right is absolute.
The First Amendment is not an absolute right.
There are things you can't say.
And there are circumstances when you can't say certain things.
Yes,
exactly.
And that doesn't mean we don't have the right to free speech in this country.
It means that we have certain guardrails in place.
There are certain limits placed on the exercise of that right.
Why is the Second Amendment the only amendment that's immune from that logic?
Why do we allow this argument to be to be foisted on us that the Second Amendment somehow means that there can be absolutely no limit of any kind.
There can be no constraint on the exercise of that right.
That is preposterous and that's America.
There's a guarantee that we can vote, right?
And that's left to the states to decide how
that's done.
And some people lose their voting rights.
And they
do lose
their... And they have to sign up.
Exactly.
And they have to register.
Exactly.
And a
lot of the Republicans say, well,
you know... And you have to show photo ID in order to exercise that right.
A
little inconvenience isn't too much to ask.
Right.
But they don't make that argument for the right to bear arms.
Correct.
And that's the odd part.
That's the strange
part.
Correct.
Mike, in your article, you say, well, the subtitle here is this week's horrific news reminded me why I won't be running for office again
in my
future.
So why wouldn't you run again?
Well, that's a long list of reasons why I wouldn't run again.
But it's not just that.
But I was candidate for governor in 2018.
And during that campaign, I took the position that there should be at least 16 steps taken.
to promote gun safety and deal with gun violence.
And none of those steps were an infringement on the Second Amendment.
But they created limits, reasonable and responsible common sense limits on gun ownership and gun use.
And I had people accusing me of trying to ban hunting.
They
take it to that limit, don't
they?
Bump stocks are simply a device that can turn an ordinary weapon into a semi-automatic weapon, a weapon of mass destruction.
And nobody needs a bump stock to go hunting.
Nobody needs a 30-round magazine.
Nobody needs a military-style assault weapon.
All of these laws would be...
not only reasonable and responsible, but they would substantially reduce the likelihood of these mass shootings.
And when even one of these steps was taken by our country, mass killings dropped, and they dropped pretty dramatically.
And then when that law was repealed, they spiked again.
And I took 16 steps, not one, but 16.
And of course, the gun rights advocates wanted nothing to do with it, but it also didn't.
Didn't lead to significant support for a campaign.
That's right.
Yeah,
and that and that's a little surprising that says a lot about our culture

Well, let's get to a really big story that happened yesterday.
A whole bunch of stuff happened, but this is one of them here in the state anyway.
Both candidates running for governor on the Republican side of the aisle.
That's Bill Barion and Josh Schoeman.
They both have signaled that they want troops to go into Milwaukee.
Really?
Yeah, they actually do.
They are already admitting that they both aren't up for that job, can't run the state without begging for federal help immediately.
They're not even governor yet.
Either one of them.
and they're asking for help really and apparently i don't know if these guys have paid attention to the republican party in the state or not but the republicans have been starving milwaukee they haven't been you know giving them enough money to operate the city and hire more police officers so maybe they don't know that yet i mean these guys are ill-prepared to become governor of this state these guys don't have enough information
And this is, this tells you everything about them, that they would actually ask for National Guard assistance in Milwaukee when in fact all we have to do is fund Milwaukee and give them money for the police department.
The police department there of course, the union president says they may need help.
So send some surplus revenue to Milwaukee you guys instead of trashing Milwaukee, you know Republicans have hated Milwaukee for at least two or three decades and they've been starving it.
They hate it because it's a Democratic voting bastion here in the state So obviously they're gonna be against it.
Yeah, but now of course, you know and then of course they wanted
concealed carry they wanted to strip all the gun laws that we had in the state and they did that so now we have gun deaths running rampant in the state at least you know enough of them to that for these guys to notice that Milwaukee has a problem and now what
the solution to Republicans or mega is, is to put more weapons and soldiers and National Guard and police into these cities in order to control all the weapons that the Republicans have allowed into these cities for regular everyday citizens to carry and shoot each other with.
Bring in the military.
Wow, come on folks.
Bring in the troops.
Yeah.
Oh boy.
You know, the mayor.
Cavalier Johnson is against this.
Tony Evers is strongly against something like this.
And by the way, they also noted that serious crime in the city has also dropped.
As of July, violent crime decreased 17% over the last year.
So it always seems like these, the crime statistics are going down.
They want to put more security into the
cities.
And then, you know, be around for at least a little while and
then
get out and say, what a, yeah, what
a success that was.
Right.
And, and Lieutenant Governor, I don't want to give her short shrift to Sarah Rodriguez.
Yeah.
She was the first Democratic candidate to throw her hat into the ring for the governor.
Right.
She says, Barian's quick support for calling in the National Guard shows he doesn't have a serious plan to keep us safe.
Truly.
That's exactly my impression.
When I heard that both these candidates on the Republican side want the National Guard to go into Milwaukee, I thought, who are these people?
Obviously, they're not prepared to run the state on their own.
They need Trump to come in and handle this for them.
This says everything, and I think these guys have lost a lot of people's vote simply by doing something
Ridiculous like this.
They just want to get Trump's attention and get his money to run for governor.
That's right.
That's probably it to get the attention.
Yeah, and to get the backing from Trump.
Now here's that ad again.
