Time to begin the good professor, Mr. Bill Sproul on a cool Thursday morning.

How you doing today, Bill?

Brighton

was nice and sunny down here today.

It's going to be 75 later today.

So, uh, winter hasn't arrived yet down here in southeast Michigan.

Well, Bill, before we get to our story today, which is a neat story, I kind of followed it, uh, when, uh, when actually the chair sitcom was on, on where the San Malone, uh, uh, character was created.

Really neat story there.

And I love human interest stories.

As you know, anytime I travel, first thing I see is where do, where's our, where's the museums?

So you're going to share that neat story.

But first,

the high school football playoff pairings we announced the other day now the days times and locations are determined so here's all the UP team division three Marquette will be at Cadillac seven o'clock right night division five Howard City Tri-County will be at Kingsburg kickoff one o'clock Eastern time division seven Lakeview will be at Apmonomony that is a one o'clock kickoff Saturday division eight lots at Park River Harris Friday night at seven East Jordan at Iron Mountain Friday night at seven eight

and the football division one, my will be at Pickford, seven o'clock right now.

I'm just gonna be at Rudyard, seven o'clock right now.

Eight player football division at two.

St.

Ignis at Gaylord, St.

Mary, Friday night at seven o'clock.

Interrematch from a week and a half, from a game a half, four weeks ago.

Powers North Central, seven and two will be at undefeated at Lakeland and Hubbell, nine and all.

That will be a 130 kickoff at Warner Field.

In the game, we'll have this weekend, Bill, Albion, Craver, City at beautiful Thurberly Field, 1230 pregame.

one o'clock kickoff, Calumena, Traverse City, St.

Francis.

Both those clubs are six and three.

More likely, the winner of that club will face the top seed, Kingsley, who's in action Friday night, and they're prohibited in favor.

So that's how it lines up, Bill, for High School Football with our UP teams this weekend.

Any thoughts before you get your story, Bill?

It should be a fun weekend.

It's always exciting with playoffs, and you just never know what the outcome is going to be.

But as we talked about it on Tuesday morning,

every game.

Good games, but no easy game.

Well Bill, our story today, I reached out to you a couple of days ago about this.

I met that ASCII at probably two, three, four weeks ago about this when Sam McDowell died.

It refreshed my terrible memory.

Give us the storyline with the late Sam McDowell, a really good baseball pitcher.

He had to lead the game early due to personal issues.

He came back to be a motivational speaker and that sparked a cheers sitcom, which is one of the all-time sitcoms

Sam Malone, played by Ten Danson, you had Norm, you had Cliff.

He's one of the classic sitcoms, but all based on a true story about a baseball player, correct?

Well, there's some belief that Sam Malone from Cheers was inspired by McDowell, but we'll share that at the end of the story, is that there's a truth to that.

But it's a great story.

I said a couple of weeks ago, an old baseball pitcher, Sam McDowell, passed away, and he leaked out about the story.

So I did some digging around the last couple of days to find an insulating connection.

to the TV show Cheers.

And for some of our audience that don't remember Cheers, it was on for 11 seasons on NBC, over 275 episodes.

It ran from about 1982 to 1993.

When I was talking to Sam, our host there, he was not familiar with Cheers.

So there may be one or two in the audience that are going to have to go to YouTube to find out some old Cheers episodes.

As I said, some believe that Sam, Mayday Balone, who was

The main character on Cheers, played by Ted Danson, was inspired by Sam McDowell.

And they gave Malone is a fictional character.

In the series, he talked about his career with the Boston Red Sox and where number 16 pitching for the Red Sox for five years.

And after his career, he had some difficulties with alcoholism.

He found sobriety and ended up owning the bar called Cheers in Boston.

And I don't know if anybody remembers the lucky episode.

He'd always carry a lucky bottle cap.

as a reminder of his recovery from alcoholism.

And listeners will remember, you pointed out a few names, but there was Sam, the main character, Carla Norm, always sat at the end of the bar.

The postman Cliff always seemed to know the answers.

And then Sam Malone was a recovering alcoholic and a notorized womanizer.

So many of you remember Diane and Rebecca and Ernie and his former coach and Frasier.

So a lot of characters on there, but it's a pen of interest.

the creation of Sam Malone is a fascinating story itself as a baseball player, and when the show creators envisioned Sam initially to be a retired football player for the New York Patriots.

However, when Ted Dancing was cast as Sam Malone, they pivoted him to make him a relief pitcher for the Boston Red Sox, and that's the name Mayday.

Sam Mayday Malone.

And if you remember Ted Dancing, you know, a tall, if you look like a baseball player, a better fit

for the size and his build and so instead some believe it was tied into inspired by McDowell the Sam McDowell so you start now looking at family Sam McDowell the real picture he was born in Pittsburgh he was a starting pitcher from 1961 to 75 and most of his career was with the Cleveland Indians outstanding player he was six-time All-Star he led the American League in strikeout five times he had had over 2400 strikeouts in his crew

top five all time in the American League.

He was 6'5", left handed pitcher, good fastball, and his nickname was Sudden Sam.

In the early 70s, his career started to decline.

He was traded, he ended up playing and visited the year in San Francisco, a little bit for the New York Yankees, and the Pittsburgh Pirates.

He was hampered by injuries in the early 70s, and he really started to develop quite a drinking problem.

The pirate released him in 75, and basically retired at 32.

And after his playing career, drinking increase, he struggled, wife left him, failed business venture, he lost all his money, he was in debt, he was living with his parents in the early 80s in Pittsburgh.

And finally, he checked into a rehab facility in Pittsburgh and when he turned his life around, he ended up earning a degree in board psychology and addictions from the University of Pittsburgh.

And after that, he spent several decades as a recovery counselor.

helping athletes in all different sports.

He was actually the sports addiction counselor for a couple of teams and several sports teams.

He was a consultant to the Major League Players Association, and the baseball assistant team was set up, and he would give lectures and presentations about alcoholism and addiction.

He actually earned a world series ring while he was working with the 1993 Blue Jays.

He was on their staff as the addiction counselor.

And then in the late 1990s, he started a retirement community called the Cities of Legend, former players in Florida.

And just a few weeks ago, the Cheers co-creators in an interview indicated that McDowell was not the inspiration for Sam May Day Malone, but it sure makes a good story.

But their lives in the character of Sam May Day Malone has a lot of the features of...

Sam McDowell loved.

He said that Sam McDowell passed away last week or early October.

He was 84.

He was living in the villages with his second wife in Florida.

So kind of an interesting story, Jimmy, but when you tie in that the initial character was going to be going to be a football player with the New York, for the New England, when Ted Danson got the role, it changed completely and into a relief picture for the Boston Red Sox, which the alcohol is some problem-hunting meat.

running the bar talk about right now people are hard to be looking to see all the different episodes could take a while there's two hundred seventy five episode to cheer so it's good to keep somebody busy for a few days

and i believe they'll they might be on netflix i know i watch them uh... uh... some on netflix

but you know i

i got a bit i i was not aware of that uh... there was any football ties it is but it isn't amazing how that whole story became full circle and i like the one part of your story where you said the cheers uh... creators whatever went

after Sam McDowell died and clarified where the intentions were.

It's kind of a really neat human interest story that's gone full circle in about two different ways, isn't

it?

And that's what it found was I started to dig in.

When you reached out, I could do a big round about Sam Mayday Malone.

I'd text you back, you mean the Sam Mayday Malone of Cheers.

And then you told me a little more.

It required a little more digging, but a fun assignment to keep me out in trouble for a few hours, Jimmy.

And I was amazed at some of the discoveries that I made.

But I remember cheers and all the characters on cheers.

It was one of the all-time classic comedies, won many awards.

And people of our age still remember some of the classic lines, as Norm walked into the bar, and Dave was always greet Norm with a cell.

It's always great stories.

And there were several spin-offs after it, too, but the original was just great.

Wow, I'll tell you what, those sitcoms back then, I mean, they don't make them like that.

Again, those who haven't seen that, if you have any of the other streaming services, if you find it, I will almost guarantee you be captivated and plan your day to watch a couple episodes.

And Bill, I gotta say one thing, though.

You forgot one critical character when you named out a character.

You know who that was, though,

yeah?

Well, well, I...

But I think there's several which one or am I missing them?

Well your dr. Fraser quaint a crane's wife, Lilith and his dog and his dog Eddie

Oh yes, yeah, so that's a good, at least we're going to have our whole Sam looking back there, digging out this the next couple of days to find more about the cheer story.

He was one that, it was not familiar with cheers, but I think we've sparked his interest

now.

Well, like I just mentioned, for those who haven't, who haven't seen these episodes or the whole sitcom, you can find it on the different streaming services.

And I'd be shocked when you find it,

where

you're just captivated by the whole, the cast,

characters, the plot, the theories.

I mean, it's so interesting to watch those shows, and it's a comedy for the most part, but there's a lot of human interest stories in those half-over episodes, aren't there, Bill?

Well, yeah, there's a few guests popped in from time to time, and it was good.

Actually, my travels have actually been to the Cheers Bar.

It's in Boston, and it still operates in Billy's house.

so it is fun to see so it's uh... and you can always get your cheers souvenirs such as probably go online you can probably get your souvenirs down but uh...

i'm sorry but actually that whole uh... series was based inside the actual bar too wasn't it where it was right now

exactly right and i forget the street it's on but uh... if you take the boston you'll you'll be able to find cheers and uh... and all the memorabilia with it so it's a fascinating story it's kind of one of the classics of all time

well bill thanks for sharing that

story and I didn't realize it was that work sensitive, but thanks for digging that up.

And I knew that I knew there's some unknown facts to that story.

Now we all know what they are.

It's always fun to dig out these obscure stories and share them with our, with our listeners.

It's made my retirement a lot of fun to discover these two.

I mean, with a group down here and they always want to know, what am I talking about today?

So I met with, had breakfast with them earlier this morning and they were amazed that this is a fan made a Malone story.

and Sam McDowell.

Well, Bill, thanks again and we'll get a game plan for next week.

We got about a minute left before I let you go.

You can take it in any high school football playoffs game and down your way.

I'm sure there's some high-end matchups down there this game.

I probably won't, but there's a lot of excitement, a lot of coverage down here.

I know Sean Belize, one of your frequent guests.

He's on local TV down here and does shows and follow him.

There's a couple bucks left last week down here, so play off to start this weekend and it'll be fun to follow.

We hope to see a couple country time UP team down in the in the Ford field at round Thanksgiving time.

Well, it sounds good, Bill.

And I know a Kaliman has aspirations.

Menominee, obviously.

Lakeland Humble and A-player, I think a lot of people feel they will be playing for a state title.

That will be in Marquette a week before the 11-player finals.

But hope is eternal, Bill, as they say, correct?

That's right.

That's right, Bill.

You enjoy it.

Enjoy your week, your Saturday afternoon game in Traverse City.

Give me a...

and hope for the best for the Cup King.

All right, Bill, we appreciate your time.

We'll talk to you next week, okay?

That

sounds great.

Always pleased to be with you.

All right, House Professor, Mr. Bill Sproul joining us.

We'll be back next Tuesday with another edition of Peakin' Inside the Grapevine.

God willing.

We're going to send it back to Sam in the morning.

Thanks, Sam.

Bringing you this week in Huskies Athletics.

And welcome to another this weekend Huskies athletics here on mix 93 in the uber.

I am your host Sam Sears This week is an off-link for the hockey huskies, but there's still plenty of sports coming up But before we go over this week's schedule going over what happened on the weekend the number 11 ranked hockey team split its CCHA opening series at Ferris State The Huskies won three to one on Friday and fell two to one on Saturday

They'll find themselves 6, 2 and 0 overall and 1 to 1 in the CCHA.

The volleyball team earned a pair of wins in its final road trip of the regular season, defeating No.

19 Grand Valley State 3-2 Friday and sweeping Roosevelt 3-0 on Saturday.

That means they are 12-11 overall and 7-5 in the Gliac.

No.

12 ranked football team fell 27-20 at No.

1 Ferris State on Saturday.

That makes them 6-2 overall and 3-1 in the Gliac.

And the soccer team wrapped up their home schedule with a 4-0 loss to

It was stayed on Friday and a one-to-one tie with Parkside on Senior Day Sunday.

Now going over the schedule, today soccer is at Wayne State at 3.

For tomorrow, Cross Country host the Huskies Invitational at the Tech Trails at 3.30.

Volleyball takes on Wayne State at 6 at the SDC Gym.

Asked on Mixed 93, 5.45 pre-game.

At Saturday soccer is at Devonport at noon.

Football is at Segna Valley State at 2.

Broadcast on Mixed 93-130 pre-game.

And Volleyball takes on Grand Valley State at 2 at the SDC Gym.

And how about we keep things focused on Volleyball by going over to the press conference of the Michigan Tech Volleyball coach, Cindy Pendrell.

The coach was first asked about her thoughts on the weekend.

Yeah, it was a great one for us.

I don't think anyone had it on their bingo card of a reverse sweep on the road quite in that fashion, but it was it was really fun.

team is just in a really good spot right now and we've been working very hard in practice and off the court to get in a competitive mindset that we've been bringing every single day.

So I was just really excited to see it come to fruition this weekend.

She was that asked what she likes about her team now that they're in the final stretch.

Yeah, I feel like we're, we still have room for growth and there's still a few things that we're tweaking.

Uh, we're, we feel very secure in playing next to each other and throwing in different options.

You know, we mix it up all the time in practice, but then of course we've got our starting lineup, but that seems to change too.

Um, so, you know, we're just very secure in playing with whoever is next to each other.

Um, and I feel like we have so many different looks and so many ways that we can be aggressive and score, um, that it's going to make it hard for other teams to defend us.

Like, like I was talking about the shot chart earlier.

Um, we set our middles from a whole range of spots along the court.

Like there's not just like a tendency of, you know, always right in front of the setter here.

Um, we set all these different spots along the court.

So it's really hard for blockers to defend us because we're, we have a different attack point every time.

Um, so I think Maddie Crider doesn't get enough credit for what she's doing.

She's a fabulous setter.

Um, and she's certainly leading the charge both emotionally, but also physically, like she's, her and Keeley have like the highest digs on the team.

I mean, Maddie Criter is number 10 right now.

Total digs for the league and usually you don't have two players on there let alone one of them being a setter So Maddie Crider is doing so much for us especially in terms of our offense.

She's changing up the attack points.

We've got so many different looks She's distributing the ball so well, so we're turning into a really deadly offensive team

lastly She was asked to give her thoughts on this weekend's opponents those being Wayne State and Grand Valley State

Yeah, I'm not really sure how to answer that because I feel like there's pros and cons to playing a team right away the pro

like there's probably not a lot of lineup changes.

So the scouting report is probably rinse and repeat, maybe a couple of adjustments here and there, cause it's pretty fresh.

Um, but then also the con might be, you know, we've got a little bit more quote, bad blood or whatever, um, just because it's fresher in your mind.

So I'm sure that grand valley is going to come in here hungry.

Um, but you know, we are just really looking forward to having a shot at them again on our home court and we feel confident going into that one.

Um, and then we haven't seen Wayne in a while.

Wayne has been on a little bit of an upward trend.

They went 3-0 at the crossover.

They took down Northern in three and then they've beaten Parkside as well.

So they've gotten some quality wins and they're starting to heat up.

So that's going to be a challenging one as well.

But yeah, we're just excited to be at home and have another shot at some conference opponents.

And that was from the press conference of the Michigan Tech head volleyball coach, Cynthia Pendrell.

Again, the team is playing its final four matchups here at home.

This weekend they play against Wayne State on Friday at 6, Grand Valley State Saturday at 2.

And of course both games are at the SDC Gym.

Be sure to support the team and buy yourself some tickets at

BuyHuskiesTickets.com.

Next up

on our list is Dan Metlach, the head coach of the football team.

For the first question of his press conference, he was asked about his loss against

Ferris State.

We're able to make some plays on the next two possessions to get points out of both of those.

So I love the way the guys competed and did a lot of really good things.

Never felt like we were out of place down there with them.

And that part was all positive.

But you get back and you watch the film.

The bus ride home just felt like we left too many chances out there.

You're playing that good of a football team.

You gotta play clean football game.

You can't turn it over and penalties can't hurt you and so on.

So, but overall, I love the way the guys competed.

You know, we'll get them regrouped and then look forward to Saginaw here.

He was then asked about his plans about going against Saginaw Valley State.

Again, it gets back to doing what we do, taking care of the football, you know, and making sure that we're maximizing our scoring drives.

You know, defensively, we got to do a better job getting off the field on third downs.

We talked about that for a couple weeks and tackling an open space.

And I don't want to take anything away from Ferris, right?

They get their guys out in space.

They've got guys that are pretty talented when they get there.

So it's not like our guys weren't in good spots.

But when we get chances to get them to the ground, we need to be able to do that.

So we're going to have to reload, get back on the bus, go on another road trip.

you know, eight hours away from home and sleeping in the hotel again and the whole deal.

But once Saturday rolls around, our heads got to be in the right spot and, you know, take care of business once we get in between those white lines.

And lastly, coach Dan Metlock was asked where he feels his team is at in this final stretch of the season.

We're in a better spot right now.

We should get a couple guys back this week.

You know, like David said,

Nora's back in full swing now and got a full game under his belt.

So health-wise, going into this week in the shape that we're in, I feel pretty good about that part.

So we get a couple more guys back, hopefully at the end of this week.

And whether they travel or not this weekend, we'll have them for the last two.

And so to be this deep in the season and have this many guys still playing as many snaps as they are,

our health has been pretty good.

Talked a little bit

about Sagna on the road trip, but what sticks out to you about that group?

Offensively very talented at the skill spots.

Quarterback can throw it, wants to throw it.

Obviously his numbers speak for themselves and Sagna's always had.

athletes at the skill spot.

So whether it be the tail bags or the wide receivers, they've got guys that are dynamic with the ball in their hand all over the place.

You know, you go to the defensive side.

It's kind of been their MO here for the last couple of years.

Their D-line is what stands out.

Very talented, deep.

They play a bunch of guys.

So we'll have your hands full in the box offensively and then defensively.

you know, keeping all those guys in check and making sure that, you know, if it's a chunk play gets tackled rather than getting over our head.

So we got to do a good job in space defensively and offensively.

We're going to have to find a way to control what goes on out front so that we can run the football and set up some of our play action stuff.

But that's kind of the deal every week.

So we'll see.

Again, coach of the Michigan Tech football team Dan Metlack at his press conference this week.

It's time for us to take a break.

This week in Huskies Athletics is powered by Michigan Tech Huskies Duck.

Come

on.

Come on!

And we're back, this weekend Huskies Athletics here on MIX 93 and the Yuper.

Let's get right back into it with our press conferences.

Let's hear from Michigan Tech's soccer coach Melissa Cujar.

She starts off by giving her thoughts on what was her last home weekend of the year.

Yeah, it was good.

Arguably played, I would say, one of our top games against Ferris, even though it was a 2-0 loss.

You know, we played well, we possessed the ball well.

I mean, a little stat, stat-wise, like, you know, we had 350-something completed passes to there, like, 150.

Right, so we're moving the ball well.

So, you know, you go from a game that, like, you don't get a result, but, like, you play really well, and then went into...

to Sunday's game and I mean it was awesome to get a tie against Parkside and actually be in the lead for a while.

It was pretty neat on an awesome goal from Havana so a good kind of way to at least get a result on senior day and kind of send the seniors and everyone out with a good final showing and yeah I mean it was a good weekend so I'll take it.

She was then asked what are the positive takeaways from this year?

I

think the growth side of it we got better.

I was actually just talking to someone you know most teams you kind of hit that midpoint and you haven't won games People give up they kind of just check it check out right our team did the opposite right even even when losing we You look at the last month like we've won games.

We've got results.

We scored some goals We kind of rose a little bit, right?

So that you know, I I'll take the gross side of that the them sticking together then just you know grinding and

the grit that they have.

And we build on it, right?

We will tweak some things off season.

All my staff and I will recruit like no other, right?

We have, you know, girls coming in already verbally committed and we'll keep getting more and we'll just keep building it.

It's a process.

It's not always an easy process, but it's a process and we just got to keep grinding.

And lastly, she was asked what she thinks about this last weekend of soccer being against teams they haven't seen before.

Yeah, it's kind of crazy.

You know, the last weekend is teams you haven't played.

Also, I think it leads to it being, you know, why not weekend?

Why not go upset some teams and mess up some conference standings?

And, you know, we have nothing to lose.

So, you know, why not go and create some chaos?

I mean, both teams are quality.

I mean, Wayne for their first year.

right now sitting at the top of the conference most likely going to win it is absolutely insane and then Davenport they're having a great year as well so but it will be fun two teams we haven't seen we can try some different things they haven't seen us so it will be a fun weekend and why not mess some things up.

Michigan Tech's soccer coach Melissa Kuhar at a press conference this week.

The soccer team wraps up their regular season at Wayne State to Vega 3 and at Davenport on Saturday at

noon.

Brings it to the front, she scores!

Oh, Lattimer with that great speed!

Renton's gonna get the assist.

And brought back up Roulette, coming down Roulette.

Trying to sweep it to the front, scores!

Isaac Gordon puts it in on a great feed by Roulette on the steal at the defensive blue line for Michigan Tech.

They come all the way down, and Isaac Gordon gets his second of the season tied up with 14 seconds.

This goes on, Huskies get the clear, they send it down, it's gonna miss a wide!

Scores!

That's it!

Roulette gets the empty net goal.

The Huskies put it away.

That'll do it.

The Huskies take game one here tonight in a thriller at Amaclavin

Arena.

Over the weekend, the Michigan Tech hockey team won three to one Friday and fell two to one on Saturday.

The first question the Michigan Tech head hockey coach Bill McColt was asked at his press conference was to give his thoughts on the weekend as a whole.

The result Friday didn't like the result Saturday.

I liked some things about our game.

Some things we can clean up in.

College hockey's hard.

To win on the road is hard.

To sweep on the road is hard.

I think you're seeing it throughout college hockey.

Give Ferris State credit, they played hard.

I think there was six minutes in the first period of Saturday night that we were uncharacteristic.

We had a breakdown in the neutral zone where F1 missed his assignment, F2 took a bad angle.

We had a missed assignment by one of our D and then our...

Our F3 missed an assignment and give fair state credit.

They made a good play and scored off it, but there was a lot of, it wasn't earned.

It was something that we gave and they scored a.

A power play goal is a tough call, but we didn't kill it and that's a bottom line and we didn't score on our chances.

I think the momentum on Saturday night, we outshot him 10-4 and 15-5 in the third.

We were pushing, hit the post late with the goalie pulled, had some excellent looks, give their goalie credit.

I thought Bart played great as well.

You're gonna have nights like that where you generate and just don't finish.

the result, you know, stings.

He was then asked how he and the team are preparing for Augustana with the small break they have.

Well, I think obviously a lot about is some things that we got to clean up internally, do some housekeeping with our group.

And we're doing some really good things too.

So we'll continue to build on that and, you know, start to game prep with them.

A lot of respect for their coach and their staff and their team.

You know, they're finding ways to win tight hockey games.

It should be a great weekend, great battle.

Obviously, points are the premium.

So it's a huge series for a lot of reasons.

The coach then gives his thoughts on why he thinks he and the team needs to clean up if they want to succeed this year.

Yeah, I mean, that's just it, right?

We're early in the...

in the season, continue to put money in the bank in league play and winning games helps you from a national standpoint too but just take one day at a time continue to grow continue to get better focus on the process I think we've got some guys that can still still play better and we got a lot of guys playing really well but we've got to continue to manage the puck better.

That's one thing that I think, you know, the pocket's gold, it's valuable.

If it was say a million dollars, I think we got some guys that need to hang on to it, possess it a little bit better, make better decisions with it.

But yeah, it's just going to continue to grow, continue to get better, continue to go through the process, not get too high, not get too low.

You know, so there's going to be days where it's not sunny in 75 every day.

And it's when you have a little bit of versity, react to it.

We got to get back to it.

And we had a good practice yesterday.

And today we're going to get better as a group and collectively continue to push.

And lastly, he talks about Isaac Gorda.

I think he's good.

He's doing some good things.

to finish, you know, obviously coming off an injury, but I think he scored a really nice goal.

I think Ru made a really good play to him on Friday, but I like how Isaac won the race to the net.

and then he idled down and cross body elevated that Pac goalies are so good at this level and obviously at the National Hockey League level they're big they're athletic to raise that up and finish that was a big time play so it's good to see him on the the score sheet I think he rang one off the the crossbar beat the goalie

cleanly Saturday.

I don't even think it went into the scoring chances.

We had a couple of those that didn't go into the scoring chances, but that one, I understand it didn't hit the net.

But if it's a quarter inch lower, it's in the net.

We're probably feeling better about ourselves today.

What do you like about what he brings and how he can lead this group?

Yeah, he's a tremendous leader.

He's well liked, well respected.

He's an extension of our staff.

You know, it's his senior year.

It's his last kick at it.

He's been around the block and he wants to have this success for our team, for our group.

So he's on the same page as our staff.

And that was Michigan Tech head hockey coach Bill McCulloch at his press conference.

The hockey team is taking a break this week before they host Augustana on November 6th through the 7th.

River

Valley Coach Mariah Hill joins us.

Mariah, first of all, a recap of the win over Richland Center.

That was a hard fought match, wasn't it?

Yeah, it definitely was.

I think our nerves were very high in the first set.

And, of course, we lost the first set, 23-25.

But we came back with a vengeance in the next two sets.

I mean, I think we really threw Jamie for a loop those second two sets.

And then the third set, you know, battle to the end.

But we came out victorious.

You found out you were going to have not the, you wouldn't have the services of one of your key players.

I guess maybe talk about how the team dug deep for that.

Oh, the team really rallied.

You know, switching the lineup this late in the season is

always hard, especially when you have one of your starting outside hitters get hurt the night before.

But Aslan Stokes has been preparing for this all season.

She has gotten some reps at tournaments and she liberoed for us a couple matches when Bella was hurt.

And she's just an all around really solid, even keel kid.

She went in and did her job, which is exactly what we wanted from her.

So what is the health of the team like this week?

We still have, Carly is still out as of now, but everyone else is good to go.

So we're just going to run on the lineup that's working and hopefully keep rolling.

Well, I'm sure there'll be a nice crowd there.

Good atmosphere on Thursday night.

And I guess the players feed off that pretty well.

Your home crowd has just been outstanding, haven't they?

Yeah, we have a great community and great student section that really comes out and represents for us and really gives us that lift that we need our crowd is very electric and very exciting and very loud and So, you know, even though we talk about trying to block them out It's next to impossible to block out all the noise But if most of the noise is at least in our favor it kind of helps us and gives us some more momentum and something to play for

River Valley Coach Mariah Hill joins us on WRCO.

Mariah, Roque will come in, number two, Cede and your number one, and you've been studying up on them.

What do you know about them so far?

You know, of course, we've done some scouting.

They have a young freshman, 5'11", or 5'10", outside hitter that I think they go to quite a bit.

They run

a system similar to ours, where, you know, we go to LMIres a lot, they go to their outsides a lot.

We've been up against teams like that before, and I think our experience is what's really going to help us and our chemistry together.

My kids have been playing together a long time, and they're fired up and ready to go.

We just really have to do our job on our side of the court and let the tips fall where they may on the other side.

Is Roque similar to anybody that you've played this year, Mariah?

They're not similar to anyone we've played this year, I don't think, but they definitely remind me a little bit of last year's regional final against Monroe Point, where Monroe Point went to their outsides a lot.

So we have definitely been up against a team like that.

We've been working really hard.

We've got some alumni coming in tonight to help us prepare a little bit and do some big outside hitting at us so that we can really focus on that.

And we're just, you know, we're fired up and we're ready to go.

I mean, we're healthy.

We're experienced.

We have great chemistry together.

And again, if we can just control what we can control on our side, that's the biggest thing.

We can go up against any competitor.

As long as we control what we can control and keep our errors low, I think we come out on top.

You played, you know, a lot of teams where you've been able to get blocks, you know, on the net.

Will blocking be a key Thursday night?

Blocking will definitely be a key.

We've been working really hard to get better at blocking.

It helps that we have two kids over six foot tall.

We've got a lot of kids that have a great vertical and they can jump out of the gym.

And we've really focused on, especially the last two weeks, our timing, working together as we go up and block and really been a big focus for us.

And when teams hit at us, we can get a lot of touches and that really helps our defense in the back court.

The other thing that teams stumble with at this time of year when you get to this level is, is serving.

You got to really cut down on the service areas, don't you?

Yeah, absolutely.

That's, you know, it's a free point when you miss a serve.

So we really do work a lot on serving as well.

We serve almost every, well, we do serve every day in practice and the kids are just very focused on that.

We know we're going to make mistakes and it's just how we respond to our mistakes.

I don't know if we've ever had a match where we've been perfect at serving.

But we all are pretty aggressive at serving too and I call most of the serves.

So we work really hard at that.

Being that you have a nice senior class and they all contribute and things like that, it doesn't seem like they're putting a lot of pressure on themselves.

It seems like they're rising to the occasion.

Yeah, they've worked really hard for this.

I have a great group of seniors.

They've prepared for this.

Ella's been on varsity for four years.

Josie's been on varsity for three years.

Pages been on our varsity for three years and the other ones have really just looked to their experience and their leadership.

And we are just prepared and ready and the seniors are really doing a great job of leading for us.

I mean, Josie Mahoney runs the court for me.

She's my go to kid.

I talked to her a lot.

We have a great relationship and I really look to her to lead this team.

Sounds good.

We look forward to the match and calling in on the radio on Thursday.

Thanks for joining us, Mariah.

Thank you.

From River Valley High School, hello again everyone.

Welcome to tonight's WIAA sectional semifinal.

A battle of the Blackhawks, Verroqua and River Valley.

Two old SWAL conference rivals and in a year they'll be in the same conference again after all these years as Verroqua will be moving to the Southwest Conference for all sports.

except for football and hockey.

That's down the road tonight.

These two teams meet very good programs that they have run.

Katie Schwartz, head coach of Rokwa and Mariah Hill whom you just heard from the head coach of River Valley.

River Valley comes in with the momentum of the victory against Richland Center most recently and certainly a really

Emotional match, that's for sure, and River Valley is going to be looking to try and bring that momentum here again tonight.

They come in with a record of 29 and 6.

Baroque was similar, 31 and 5 for the Blackhawks coming in.

We'll go over a few more of the numbers for these two teams and they're very similar with some of their top players.

We'll do that when we continue with more of the pre-match show right here on WRCE FM 107.7 and WRCE.FM.

It's just $10 per child.

Mark your calendars for November 7th at Korten, Maine.

We can't wait to see you.

Going over some of the numbers for these two teams.

For Verroqua, their leading hitter is Maddie Schwartz, who's a freshman, the coach's daughter, and she is very similar in height to Ella Myers of River Valley.

And Maddie with 473 kills, Ella with 515 on the year.

Ella has 145 blocks.

Lauren Kowalczyk of Verroqua, the next closest with 33, so Verroqua doesn't get as many blocks.

And serving ace is fairly even.

Megan Brindle of Verroqua leads them with 65 on the year, while Josie Mahoney has 64.

Two real integral players for both of these clubs.

Olivia Willis of Verroqua, their leading dig person with 491.

Ella Myers with 278.

So those are some of the overalls that both teams had very difficult conference runs with

The River Valley Hawks going eight and two in the Southwest Conference.

Baroco went eight and four in the Cooley.

In fact, four of their losses came in conference play.

Both teams getting set for the action here tonight at court side.

Officials making their way out tonight as well.

The officials, a good crew tonight.

Darren Jenks and Francis Shufflehold.

as assigned by the WIAA and the four-person officiating crew with the line judges also in the WIAA Blue jerseys for tonight's match here at River Valley High School.

Really a good run for this River Valley Club.

They're hoping it continues.

They have a good amount of seniors, seven of them, and in fact

The injury report tonight, prior to match time, is the fact that Carly Birchfield, a junior for River Valley, who did not play in the original center match, she will be available tonight but will not start and they're going to kind of see how she goes.

Right now, it is time for the playing of a national anthem from River Valley High School.

We want to be announced for Viroqua here tonight and going with some of the players that we talked about in terms of some of the stat getters here.

So we're looking at some of the starters here and a couple of the numbers that that didn't jive but now I've got the libero player is Olivia Willis for Viroqua.

She will start with her.

Then number two is senior Reese Hooks.

Number five Lauren Koalczyk.

Number six is Colby Primmer.

Number seven is Ali Chesselsen.

Number 11, Bailey Clark.

Number 12, Megan Brembo.

And number 33, Maddie Schwartz.

For the River Valley Black Rocks, getting a start this evening, those players include number four, Paige Stafford.

Number 10, Ashlyn Stokes.

Number eight, Braylon Taps.

Number 13 is Josie Mahoney.

Number 16 is Ella Myers and number 22 is Kylie Smith.

Those are the Blackhawks.

Belladivini is their libero player and very even match up in terms of height here in this starting lineup.

Back for Oka might even have the overall edge in height.

But as we've seen there are players that can jump out of the gym as well.

So sometimes

height doesn't necessarily make that much of a difference in volleyball and in those regards.

But we're going to, I think, see a real competitive match here tonight.

Black Hawks in the black and orange.

The visitors from Verroqua.

The home black Hawks in the home white with black lettering.

The Knights match engineered by Mr. Fabulous.

Tim Thied, Mr. Fabulous Productions.

And here we are, Phil Knee with you.

from the raised do-it-best center Rockwell Automation Sports Desk here this evening.

Belladini gets the start of the back row as the Libero player for River Valley as the rotations are all set.

And also entering for Veroqua will be Olivia Willis, the junior Libero player.

And the first serve belongs to Veroqua.

Megan Brindle will serve it up.

River Valley in serve received mode in front of it.

Big, big crowd here tonight for this one at River Valley High School.

Here comes the first serve by Brindle, pulls it near side and Smith right to the left side.

It goes to Taft and Myers gets it over.

Baroko with her first chance for a kill, shot is up, blocked by Myers.

Back it goes, will try with Short.

She takes it over, blocked by River Valley, taken by Schwartz and down it goes.

Good Valley won nothing.

Kill, the freshman looking strong there.

Varroqua, despite a few blocks from River Valley, are able to persevere and get the first point of the night.

Varroqua will serve again.

The approach by Brendle drives it.

Smith passes near side, taken by Stokes.

Myers for the kill.

One hand saved by Varroqua.

They'll get it over on the hit by Primmer.

Back to the left side, driving it over and down is River Valley.

Nice hit by Ashlyn Stokes.

And the scorer goes one to one.

Bella Vinnie will be back to serve for the Blackhawks of River Valley.

Bella back by the back line and we'll get it going here from our left to our right.

First serve of the night for River Valley.

Bella Vinnie plants it in the middle.

It's going to be Schwartz and she'll get it right back.

Takes a shot back line and got it just out.

There's the line judge.

That was close.

River Valley takes a two to one lead.

So right now River Valley's Belladivini getting the ball.

And getting the next whistle.

2 to 1 River Valley.

Bella steps up.

Here's the line drive.

Sir fielded now by Verroqua pass now by Brendel to the middle.

Take him a shot.

Ball up blocked by Myers.

Push back down to the right side and over the shoulder drive by Chustelson.

Quick set Myers for the kill.

Blocked by Verroqua and down it goes.

Schwartz gets the block and we're tied at two.

River Valley.

With a good volley going, couldn't get it past the block of the freshman, and now serving will be number seven.

Chesselsen pulls it down the middle, passed by Tafts.

There's the quick set Myers on the run shot up, blocked and out of bounds, and it kipped off River Valley and at the point for Verruqua.

They take the lead of three to two.

Good block.

Again, they don't have as many blocks as River Valley on the season, but so far they've done a pretty good job at the net.

And number seven, Allie Chesselsen will serve again.

Allie line drives it far side, played by Smith.

Mahoney sets it, Stafford takes it down the line and that one is in, says Alonzo.

And we're tied at three.

Paige Stafford with the kill, getting into the act.

Important for River Valley, get some of those outside hitters going and Paige answers the call.

Here goes Josie Mahoney for the serve.

And it's to the left side.

Let's serve.

Drops in.

And River Valley takes the lead of 4-3.

Josie Mahoney with an ace serve.

She will serve again.

One that pounded the net and then walked over.

Mahoney will get the chance again.

Here's the serve.

Low to the net.

Fielded by Schwartz.

Quick set from Chessel Finchop by Schwartz.

Down the line and out of bounds.

5-3 River Valley.

Mahoney will serve.

Baroque and serve receive mode.

Mahoney coming up for the serve.

Battles it to the near side left serve and it's going to go down for an ace.

And the Blackhawks take a 6-3 lead.

Mahoney doing a great job serving here in this opening set for the Blackhawks.

Josie stepping up, gets the whistle and there is the serve.

Pulls it near side, Schwartz with the dig.

Played there by Hooks.

There's a shot up blocked by Myers and down it goes.

7-3 River Valley.

Myers getting in the act.

Getting a block.

And now serving will be Josie Mahoney.

Four point lead for River Valley.

There's the serve.

That one is out of bounds.

Service error gives it back to Veroqua.

And the Black Crocs of Veroqua will serve.

Some of their fans.

Still arriving here tonight.

WI8 tournament start a little earlier.

Here's the serve going to the right side, diving big by the Blackhawks.

Yeah, nice push over by Tafts.

Back to the right side, Schwartz drives it back to Tafts again.

Mahoney set Stafford, taking it down the line.

Play by Veroqua.

Kept live by Willis, drives to the right side over, but it was a tip.

No, it was not.

River Valley gets the point.

Some violent volleys going on here tonight River Valley by four and Ella Myers will do the serving Myers with the whistle line drives in here side Schwartz Plays in hooks now back to the middle and then driving it over back line out of bounds Rockwell hits it out again and River Valley leads by a score of nine four Ella Myers will serve Baroque and serve receive mode

Ella with a serve pulled near side Schwartz with a pass books brings it back to the court now for the back line driving it over a nice hit there by Brindle back to the right for River Valley Stafford drives it over.

It's the second week of the WI football playoffs this weekend, and I asked Travis Wilson of Bound Wisconsin about area games coming up Friday night and this weekend.

In terms of our SWC team, didn't fare too well, unfortunately, for the SWC.

So not a lot going on there.

really the only game locally.

And I was looking at this the other day because our Reedsburg game is on Saturday.

So I was like, oh, I'll go to a game on Friday night.

And there's one game within an hour of Reedsburg.

And that's the Ithaca game.

So obviously that's going to be a big one.

It's going to be a tough one for Ithaca Weston.

Welcoming in Blackhawk War and a team that has been one of the better teams in Division 7 for a better part of a decade or more.

They're not a normal five seed.

Obviously, they went on the road and be cashed in in level one.

So I think that's got a chance to be a really, really good game.

Travis Wilson from Bound, Wisconsin.

His team will be doing battle on Saturday.

He's one of the assistant coaches for Reedsburg.

here tonight and you know I think back to the old days in the sectional and a lot of people out there will remember because River Valley has been there a lot of times back in the old days you'd play two sectional matches on the same night which is crazy but and that was back a lot of times you go back to Kathy kiddies there I am and Lisa Relke when it wasn't the rally scoring and you'd play sometimes two and a half hours and then you'd rest for 20 minutes and play another two hours and

It's hard to believe that now and whoever wins this one you do you think, man, do you have anything left in the tank?

And sometimes the other team that was playing in the other court would be over in three, so it wasn't always a level playing field.

At least you get a day's rest after tonight.
