Michigan Tech pulling off a 3-1 victory last night.

A hard-fought one.

It was not easy.

It never is in this building.

Michigan Tech actually trailed after one period of play, one to nothing.

But after that, the Huskies were able to shut them down and scored a goal in the second.

Scored actually two in the second period and then an empty netter.

Very late in the third period to make it a 3-1 final.

The Huskies getting their sixth win of the season.

And now we'll try for a sweep here in Big Rapids.

Not easy to do.

Game time set for 7-0-7.

I am told we are starting at 7-0-7, but I don't... The pre-game clock countdown is not indicating that right now.

They had a little issue with the Zamboni, and everything's been taken care of.

They had to do some more ice maintenance.

was a great play by Brents to get it up to Burns and, you know, he drew a defender and was able to make a great play on the wall to get me the puck and saw a bit of a lane there.

So, try to take it to the net and, you know, finish it off.

So, at what point in a sequence like that do you have in your brain like, yeah, I'm going for it.

do everything I can to muscle my weight in front of the net.

I think when you have an opportunity with time and space like that on a small rink, you're just going to kind of take advantage of your opportunity.

I think as soon as Burns chipped the puck I had it in my head that I was going to try to take it to the net and worked out.

You have a favorite side to do that on your backhand or on your forehand.

That was on your backhand.

You had a couple of chances on your forehand later in the night.

I have a little different on both sides, but coming in on your backhand, you have that opportunity to shoot on your forehand a bit easier.

I tried to catch the goalie a short side and it worked out.

We went with seven defensemen last night so you were on an actual line.

Does that make a difference as far as your preparation for the game and throughout the game?

For sure.

I think it just means you make it some more opportunity out there and I think that's huge.

Anytime you're able to get more ice time and you just want to get advantage of it.

This ring, this ice surface is a different

animal than anything else we see throughout the year.

Did you feel we got better as the night

went on as far

as getting used to the smaller ice surface to get.

Yeah, for sure.

I think we, you know, we stuck to the game plan.

We wanted to do, you know, we made it try to make it difficult on them and, you know, try to sustain Ozone pressure.

And I think we did a really good job of that, especially in the second.

And I think we got to do more of that again tonight and I think we'll have success.

Was there any conversation going there between you guys on the way down?

I mean, as soon as I saw the opportunity to

get a 2-1 there, I just kind of burst up the ice and started yelling at him as loud as I could.

And he found me.

And what were your thoughts on the game overall?

I mean, when you come to Ferris, it's always a tough game.

The game is smaller ice, their style of play, it suits them.

Yeah, it's always an adjustment.

I think tonight's gonna be another battle really, like if the puck's just bouncing everywhere, there's

not a lot of space out

there, it's just

a battle.

Huskies fell down at the offensive blue line, lost it, and coming down looking for a second goal of the game was Mellon Bacher, a huge stop by Bowen, and the Huskies bring it back up now, trying to get inside of the zone.

Huskies up two to one, that could cross the line, he'll dump it in, the Ferris State Bulldogs do right to the net!

As it hopped over the stick of Bartoskiewicz, behind the goal, he was behind the net, and a sharp angle shot went wide.

I watched it online last night, but you know there's nothing like being here and actually seeing it in person.

You were at the football game earlier today or not?

No, not yet.

Yeah, back in time travel a little bit.

No, I wasn't there today, sadly, but I'm here now for this.

Michigan Tech football put a valiant effort on.

I know there's no moral victories when it comes to division to football, but a great effort against a great Ferris State team.

Two really good, highly ranked teams battling it out earlier today here on campus as well.

So Ruby, what is your job down here tonight?

Today, I'm kind of covering some of the social media aspect of the game.

So I'm working with our team.

We're kind of like working a little bit remote today too.

So whenever we, you know, inevitably score a goal or we kind of have our warmups or anything like that, I'm letting the viewers and the followers at home follow along with that.

fourth year?

Yeah,

my senior year.

I know that.

Is this your fourth year of doing promotions?

Yes,

I've been working with Tech since my freshman year.

Yeah, so it goes by so quick, I can't even remember.

I know, yeah.

Talk a little bit about this year and again, what you were hoping to do once you graduate from Michigan Tech.

Yeah, well, this year's really exciting.

I'm working with the promotions again.

So, you know, I'm out there on the ice during the intermissions helping run some of those games.

So if you're a fan, there's always a chance for you to be on the ice with us and maybe, you know, get a Zamboni round.

or win a prize so it's really fun to face the community and kind of connect them to the team and our arena right but then also after I graduate my hopes are to continue on in hockey so just kind of pursuing whatever the next steps might be whether that's major juniors or NHL there's a few prospects so it's really exciting for me I'm gonna be doing some game shadowing coming up

For a few teams, I'm not going to specify them yet, but you know, got to follow along and find out, right?

And remind everybody what your major is at Michigan

Tech.

Yeah, so I'm a senior marketing major.

And it's a really great program here, and it's set me up for success in this field, I think.

Do you have a spot?

Is there a specific thing you do in promotions that really is at the top of the list for you as far as you really look forward to it?

Yeah, well, every game, it's so much fun.

We have the Michigan Kids Can, so they come down with the team before the game.

They get to meet their favorite player, maybe sign a stick or a puck, and then they skate out in front of the team.

And it's just so great hearing the crowd go crazy for them every night that they're out there.

We know that they're cheering for the team, too, but that kid just is filled with so much joy, and it's so exciting.

So being able to do that is really exciting But anytime that I get to talk with like kids, you know and just see how you know much joy it brings them That's my favorite part of the game.

It's also gonna be exciting to you because I know you and Josie and the other promotions people

During hockey pre-games, we'll go out and talk to the student line, the experienced tech line, and possibly get some contestants for the promotions coming up that day.

But it's really an exciting thing to see how, sometimes, how long they've been sitting out there, biding their time waiting to come in and watch Michigan Tech Hockey.

Some days, I ask them, like, what time did you get here this morning?

And they go, oh, 6 AM, 8 AM.

Like, that's not a crazy thing.

I had a freshman here at Tech this year ask me,

What time should I get in line for the home opener?

And I said, well, you're asking me at three o'clock and it's already too late,

you

know?

But there's always seats from, so.

Yeah, it's just really exciting to be able to talk with my peers too.

You know, and sometimes they cheer me on when I'm out there.

So that makes me feel kind of good, right?

And all the time you've been at Michigan Tech, there's only probably been a handful of games that you've been able to see on the road, right?

Yeah.

Sometimes I get to go with the team to Northern Michigan.

So that's always an exciting game, just all the energy that's there.

But also the Great Lakes Invitational,

I was

at that last year and I think I'll be there again this year.

So it's always cool to see the different arenas and work with the staff that are there for those two.

This

is your first time at Ava Glamon Arena?

It is my first time here with Michigan Tech Hockey.

I was here for a game a few years ago just to visit some friends, but it's better to be here with Tech, you know.

Ruby Walker is with us.

She is one of the big pieces of the puzzle for promotions at Michigan Tech.

You see her and Josie and others on the ice and on the court and on the field, as I mentioned.

We've got a big thing coming up in a very short period of time.

annual kids day put on by a marketplace foods great partner with Michigan Tech and they've been doing that for well over 20 years and Ruby so on the 4th of November which is a Wednesday that which is a week from this coming Wednesday if I got that right

I think you're right

That's three years of age to 18 years of age.

And then the parents and the kids can go right up to the SDC ticket office and pick out their seats.

A couple of big wins for CCHA teams as Minnesota State defeated.

St.

Thomas last night three to one that's a great win for the Mavericks who are off to a little bit of a slow start they'll figure it out I'm sure but and then Augustana in overtime defeating Ohio State 3-2 final in that game how about Michigan State falling to UNH 1-0 last night that was in New Hampshire

Michigan defeated Western Michigan by a score of three to two.

Two heavyweights battling it out.

And it was Minnesota over Western Michigan to complete the... Sorry, did I say that?

Minnesota over North Dakota to complete the sweep over the Fighting Hawks.

5-3 was the final.

Minnesota had won on Thursday night as well.

So the first two wins of the season were at home for the Gophers.

and they were against their arch rival North Dakota so that was a big win last night for Minnesota and again that helps obviously Michigan Tech having played Minnesota and beaten them earlier in the season.

Minnesota Duluth did defeat Bemidji State 4-1 that was a 1-0 game in favor of the Duluth Bulldogs going into the third period they then rattled off three goals in the first ten minutes and Bemidji got on the board in the last minute of play so

Bebers will try to earn a split tonight.

Omaha over Lindenwood, 7-4 final there.

Lindenwood will be one of the teams in the Great Lakes Imitational coming up at the end of December.

Fun game to watch last night, coach.

A nail biter right down to the wire, but found a way to win here in a very difficult building to do.

So were

you happy overall with the way the guys played?

Well, happy with the result, for sure.

No question.

Give Ferris a state credit.

They came out.

They're playing hard.

They're a desperate team.

It's hard to win on the road.

You know, I thought we had a defensive breakdown, and they got a lucky balance.

I thought Bart played great.

But I really liked our second period.

Second period was unbelievable.

One of the things we did struggle with, at least through most of the game, though, was getting pucks through.

What could we do as far as finding ways to get

pucks through in that?

Well, for sure, it's a credit.

I mean, in college hockey with the full shield, I think first, it was committed to blocking things.

We got to do a little bit better job of having deception.

finding ways to get pucks you know through to the net or anchor the nets they did a good job of fronting with their defensemen so we that'll be an area we're getting a little bit better but they have lively boards here I think we can take advantage of shooting pucks a couple feet wide and then it's coming off there kind of like you know

a ping pong type thing or backboard and pinball, I should say, and just get pox into that area and create some chaos.

Special teams ended up not being a huge part

of the game, but we struggled.

Again, they did a really good job of keeping us to the outside.

If we do get some power plays, are we able to do a better job, do you think, on that tonight?

Well, we had two great looks on the second one.

I didn't like our first power play,

but the second power play that we had generated two great A's that could easily win.

So we're not getting a lot of power plays, but it would be nice to score on the power play.

So there's no question about that, but I thought our kill was great last night.

Everybody played, I thought, pretty well last night.

Yeah, we're going to bring Bakes in, and we'll go with Sexty, so that'll kind of be our adjustment.
