Down here in Big Rapids and that is the reason why tomorrow night's hockey game will not be a one-hour earlier start Than tonight.

It'll be the same time so both games from Michigan Tech hockey 707 starts keep that in mind 630 pregame here on mission mix 93 WKJ Husky is coming off a very good weekend against the Alaska Nanooks back at the John McGinnis student ice freedom Owen Bartoskevic earning his fourth career shutout

And first of the season in that 3-0 win on Friday, Huskies then had to come back from a gold deficit and won it 4-2 in that third period to complete the sweep.

And Michigan Tech coming in with an impressive 5-1 record right now as they get set to start the CCHA schedule.

Ferris State Bulldogs were off last week and they've only played four games so far.

They're still looking for their first win, but they've played one really, really good team.

and that would be how the Western couple of games back on the eighth and ninth and those were games in which Western was ranked eighth at that time and lost six nothing and five to one and of course the Bulldogs are trying to get this program going again they have some very dangerous players out there as we'll talk about more as we go through our free game and through the night here tonight but I tell you what the coaching staff is

hungry, this Bulldog team is hungry and they're ready to play in front of their home crowd here.

There's going to be a lot of Husky fans in the building here tonight.

We are seeing that already and we are expecting even more as the football team being down here.

It makes it quite a weekend for Husky fans and looking forward to seeing a lot of black and gold in the building here tonight and tomorrow night.

The Huskies taking on the Bulldogs this weekend in conference play, the first two conference games of the season for

Michigan Tech.

Let's get to our interview with Luke Shipley, who is the reigning C-C-H-A defenseman of the week after scoring two goals last Saturday night against Alaska.

They were the tying goal on the power play and in the game winner Luke came over from UMass Lowell as a transfer and is enjoying his sophomore season so far.

We asked him to describe that first goal Saturday night that tied the game up.

Yeah, first one was

on a power play.

I think we had a good entry.

I carried it and kicked it out.

I want to say Jansen and he made a nice play over to Gordon for the entry and we got set up.

It kind of came off a shot, or I don't actually know what it came off, but he rimmed it back out to me.

Gee, and I kind of got to the middle, and there was a good screen.

I put a good shot and went in.

You feel good when that first one goes in

with a new team?

Yeah, no.

I think I've kind of been building on this for a couple of weeks now, so it feels good to finally get one under a belt.

Second one wasn't much different.

It wasn't a power play, and it wasn't really a pass back to you.

Hall of Fame weekend.

Play deep in the offensive zone for Michigan Tech.

Back to the point.

Yeah, there was I think the boys had a hard four check they they created a loose loose puck and Popped out to the middle and I think there's a screener front and I talked her home

So can you talk a little bit about I know we're really young in the season any big differences from last year at UMass Lowell to here

and yeah, definitely I think we have a special group here I mean I think mocks has been talking about that from the start that we're building something special and we are a special group and I think I think our style here fits fits my game quite a bit better We really want the D to be active up to

top and include them and the defense to create offense.

So I think that's definitely helped my game.

And I also think we break the puck out as a five-man unit.

So we spend less time in our D zone and more time in there.

And I think it's really fit my game well.

You know, watching this whole D-Core, there's a lot of guys like you that have that offensive ability.

But we're not cheating for offense, which is so key at that position, isn't it?

Yeah, I think, I mean, it's kind of came from our coaching staff, but I think every guy on the back end is capable of producing and also defending.

So I think that's especially normally see that normally you see maybe a couple offensive guys and then strictly some defensive guys.

But I think we have guys that can do everything and that's kind of what a championship team needs.

You're getting involved right away in the community here.

You went with us to one of the local

schools to meet some fourth graders.

Tell us

how that was for you.

Yeah, it was cool.

It's always fun helping

out in the community and seeing a smile on the kids when you're around.

It's pretty funny.

They ask some funny questions.

Something something that I I did when I was younger, so I appreciate it when I was younger So I'm happy to get back to the community and do what I can

when you guys were on the ice on Friday Are you able to tell that those kids are down there by the by the ice level or is it kind of tough?

I mean you're pretty you're focused on the game for the most part So I mean there might be a few times that TV time That's what you're looking around or are checking all but you're pretty you're pretty focused on the game in the moment

How about the crowds this weekend?

How do they affect you guys on the ice?

Yeah, I mean I've definitely never played in front of fans

that are crazy like this and involved and always doing something, whether that's cheering us on or maybe tripping other teams.

No, I'm great for the fans here.

It's crazy.

So I love it so far.

Second road trip of the season coming up.

Do you like getting in on the bus and hanging out with the guys for a couple of days like that?

Yeah, it's definitely fun.

I mean, I've had my fair share of travel through junior.

So the bus, the bus has its fun times and it's not some fun times, but no, it's definitely fun, especially coming to a new team.

You get to, you have to bond with the guys and spend a lot of time.

Welcome back to Big Rapids, the Huskies taking on the Bulldogs in CCHA play this weekend.

Last weekend back

at the back was Hall of Fame weekend, as everybody knows, and we had a chance to chat with Colin Murphy, one of my favorite players ever here at Michigan Tech, who was inducted along with Darcy Way and Wayne Weller and the rest of the sports inductees for the Hall of Fame.

It was during one of the intermissions on Saturday night, and I know a lot of people were at the game and probably didn't get a chance to hear Colin, so I wanted to play some of that back for you.

So here's Colin Murphy in the second intermission on

Saturday night, a day after he got inducted in to the Michigan Tech Sports Hall of Fame.

It felt great, Dirk.

You know, it's such a great weekend to come back and see the new rink, the upgrades.

He's down in the dressing room to read the lineup with Darcy and Wayne and, you know, really, really special moments.

So happy to be here and brought some family here.

My mom was not able to come, but she's listening.

And so I love you, mom.

You know, it's super special to see the friends and some of the relationships that you formed within the community and stuff like that, so it's such an honor to come back and see everybody.

And you have, correct me if I'm wrong, you had not been back here since you left, correct?

That's correct, yeah, since 2006.

You know, life challenges and a bunch of kids and stuff, and it kind of gets away from you, but definitely following along and so happy to see the program where it is now.

You know, sweeping Minnesota a couple of weekends ago, like as an alumni, you're super proud of those

things.

Well besides the the 7-6 overtime game that we're already talking about here Do you have a couple of games here at Michigan Tech that really stand out for you whether individually or as a team?

Yeah,

like the northern games were always super special, right?

I think one of the big ones for us WCHA at the time was so competitive and it was tough every weekend to get some W's so we went into Minnesota and we swept them one year and it was like you know to get a win in Minnesota from a from a team like Michigan Tech that didn't have the top prospects and all those things like we worked our butts off on and off the ice to get to that level but

You're playing some high-end draft picks and all those things so going into Minnesota I think we all remember it sweeping them so super special and correct me if I'm wrong that was the snowstorm

Yeah, and wasn't yeah, we got delayed right mean got delayed because they all forgot how to drive there for a

while And we could not get to the rink on time

so they

delayed

and we won that night in my mind was

okay Everything else

is gravy.

There's no way we're gonna win two games against the Gophers and you guys did it was just it was an incredible I just remember the ride home was

one of the best.

Oh, it's a great memory.

I definitely remember that for sure.

Now, you're one of my favorite players for a lot of

reasons.

But if you remember,

there's very few lines that have nicknames at the college level.

But you were part of the Run DMC line with Tager Desmet and, of course, Chris Conner, who was a fantastic player here at Michigan Tech.

What do you remember about playing with those guys there for that

time span you were together?

Desi was a super skilled centerman that can distribute the puck both ways, which

And as a left winger, I always had C's in my sight, because he was so fast, right?

So me and Desi knew, with Connor's speed, like, it's like, let's find a way to get him the puck, let him create that offensive momentum going north, and then we would follow up.

And with me and Desi's skill, I think we were a pretty good line for sure.

Like, really fed off each other, no matter what.

You had the ability to really slow the game down, and you knew that, right?

And you handled pressure probably better than anyone that I remember.

Yeah.

you know it is something that I really always tried to do like in practice and all these things like as a kid growing up right it's like slowing the game down because people get tense with their stick and they they think they got to get rid of the puck but it's like knowing your next move and knowing where your opponents are and all these things it's uh you know it was one of my strengths and uh

always great feedback from coaches that allowed me to do that which is which is special because you know you with that you do make mistakes and there is some challenges on the ice with you know getting pressure and all those things but

I think I had a good sport stuff that let me do that

you reminded me Colin that you were not here when the sweets went in I was thinking you know sometimes I forget it's been a long time I forget who was here and who was was not and you were saying you already talked about it but just some of the changes when you're away as long as you had over 20

years yeah it's crazy to walk in here and see that the new development and we had the bleachers there with the pep band and Mitch's misfits were all down in this area over here so which started right around your time yes like yeah

all those guys,

right?

Like don't know shirt on and press his belly against the glass.

Like it was, it was the start of something great, right?

And how like it evolved into this, what it is you see here now.

So it's pretty, pretty cool.

It's Colin Murphy.

He wore number 11,

scored a lot

assists.

He was a good

one for Michigan Tech.

Pock management will be at a premium like it always is.

But we've got to get traffic at their net.

We've got to hunt on our forecheck and establish that.

And then we've got to stay disciplined.

Obviously, they're a physical hockey club.

But we've got to play hard between the whistles.

Who might be that next guy?

Do you have a couple of guys in mind that might fill that slot?

Yeah, I think we'll probably move Cheechick into the middle, move Eli Jansen up with Kosk and Rhine's, and kind of go from there.

I think we'll probably go with 70 tonight.

Our forecheck has been very good.

A smaller

ice sheet.

How does that?

change or keep things the same as far as our full check and making sure we are able to pin

them in as best we can?

Well, for sure.

I mean that feeds the identity, feeds our OZP, feeds our offense, right?

So, you know, when you're turning pox over in the neutral zone or you're not establishing your full check, but good things happen when you can start to pressure teams and create game possession, start to get into our releases and get going with what we want to accomplish.

It's just going to help build momentum and

It can be very discouraging to play against.

Do you feel RD is getting

better early on in the season every game?

What I've noticed, coaches, especially last weekend, really making that first good pass so important in this building to get that first pass to get out

of the zone right away.

For sure.

You got to, you know,

teams are trying to pin us in our own end and it's hard sometimes as a as a defenseman you're coming back and they make you turn you make you go 200 feet and now you got to break a puck out under pressure and you got to prescan you got to make a read talking to our group about communication helping each other out having shared you know breakouts so those are all things that we've we've worked hard on and in practice it important too

to get guys in those dirty areas around their net to try

to bank some in if they're not going in with the clean shot?

Well you look at Western's success against them I think they scored eight goals with a net front presence in front of their net and it's hard for goaltenders to see pox and then if it hits them they can't control the rebound so you know that's really

a huge component to scoring goals and creating offense and obviously the National Hockey League in our level.

These goalies are just so good if they can see it.

So we want to get somebody there for a chance for a tip, screen, rebound, traffic.
