High School Volleyball: New Glarus vs Richland Center
High School Sports · Thu Oct 22, 2026
how are you?
Yeah, Phil, I'm sorry.
I have to apologize.
I was a little bit late getting here.
I, you know, I had to take the long way.
I was coming from downtown Richland Center and had to go to Sextonville, but I'm back.
Back, back, yep.
And honestly, I'm not complaining.
I'll be thrilled.
We'll have a nice road.
Highway 14 would be awesome.
It'll be fantastic.
I just had to make that joke because it feels like
or something.
Life is going to be awesome there as soon as we get passed an election and road concern.
You can't get there from here.
That's right.
well
Yeah, so the river, you know, so number one folks get outside this weekend
We weekends like this are getting few and far in between.
And we're looking, you know, high temperatures either in the high sixties or seventies, low seventies.
The sun is out.
I was up at Peer County Park here this afternoon for some tourism work related things.
And they're literally, they were like 10 cars there and people were picnicking.
People are hiking.
Really, really cool.
So I would say get out, enjoy the outdoors.
If you want to go kayaking, again, I'll say this is for those who have kayaked previously and have some experience.
That section from Rock Bridge down to County SR or Steamboat Rock on Highway 80 where that landing is, you can do that.
I'm sorry, the Highway 80 landing, not SR.
You can do that.
It's enjoyable.
It's, you know, you could have a place where you might have to portage a little bit, but it's enjoyable.
You can do that.
Anything south of that, the mill pond.
the stretch from Bowens Mill to Melpond Park I would probably avoid that because I guarantee you would not be happy with me if I led you to believe you could do that enjoyably because you can't it's that really is a sense of adventure there so the northern sectional rock bridge down to the state highway 80 landing at Steamboat Rock
That's a really enjoyable stretch at this point for the most part.
right?
They are.
This is going to be probably their best weather, because I know they've fought with rain and little cold temps in the past, but they'll be real happy with the weather this weekend, I think.
So the Pumpkin Fest, you know, Pumpkin's in the jungle.
The Pumpkins are on display.
out on the courthouse lawn now.
But Saturday is the really big show.
So 9 o'clock in the morning, for those of you who really feel motivated at 9 o'clock in the morning to get up and go for a run, the Simons Recreation Complex, they have their fun run, their donut dash.
I got excited for a minute.
I thought maybe there was a sprint to donuts.
I would have been in on that.
Me too.
Bet a 5k for donuts.
That's not enough to get me motivated.
Not even five minutes.
For many folks.
That'll be a really enjoyable event.
The Donut Dash at Simon's Rec Complex.
Nine o'clock.
I'm sure they're still taking registrations.
That's not a problem.
And then in the afternoon from 12 o'clock to four o'clock at the Richland County
courthouse right on the lawn.
They've got a lot of activities going on.
You'll be able to see all the creations and vote on them and see who wins the prizes for the best decorations.
They'll have photo ops and they have a special show coming with live animals from one o'clock to two o'clock with Zoo Zort.
I don't know enough about this, Phil.
My interest is peaked.
I'm going to have to check that one out.
not mistaken.
They're actual.
Yeah, it's not you and I dressed in a donkey costume.
No, no.
No, it's actual animals.
So with that show, the actual show is one to two o'clock.
So that'll be of interest.
There's also bake sale going on there and games.
So there's quite a bit of activity at the courthouse from 12 o'clock noon to four on Saturday.
And then also don't forget quail run is having night.
golf.
They're having Pump Confess night golf, so that means you wear a costume and decorate your cart.
There will be prizes for best costume and for the best decorated cart.
Their registration is going to start at four o'clock.
They're going to have the costume contest, decorating contest, but they tee off at five thirty.
And I don't know if you've been paying attention to sunset lately, but it's getting there.
It's ramped up.
So that will be night golf at Quail Run then on Saturday night as well.
So a lot of activities going on with Pumpkin Fest.
and then also so I didn't say anything about any live music there but there is quite a bit of live music in the area so on Friday night at the 80 German warehouse the lovelies will be performing an acoustic group couple and I've heard them before they're very good very talented so if you go to the 80 German warehouse lounge they're performing from 530 to 830
Friday evening.
And so that's your live music option on Friday night.
Now, if you wanted also a musical opportunity is to go to English Prairie Distillery in Muscaday on Friday night, they have their single
bingo, specifically Halloween hits, which I'll bet you you and I'd be pretty good at this.
Halloween hits.
Just
Monster Mash every time and you'll get it right.
Or you'll get it once anyway.
At least once you'll get it.
but that's 6 30 to 8 o'clock at English Prairie Distillery where they have single bingo and basically you just listen to popular in this case Halloween hits like I said we'd be pretty good at it and a few number of those and you identify that to make sure you put your bingo card fill the spot on the bingo card free to play a lot of fun with that but then on Saturday at English Prairie Distillery they have a couple things happening but Michael Johnson
our own favorite and almost famous Michael Johnson who loves, he absolutely loves.
to play Yacht Rock hits.
So make sure you request a lot of Doobie Brothers.
I know loves Doobie Brothers.
Michael McDonald.
Michael McDonald would be awesome.
He's going to shoot me next time he sees me.
But please do that.
Just go up and jokingly and do not expect him to ever play any Yacht Rock because it's tough.
Those are tough songs to reproduce.
Just Free Bird maybe.
Maybe Free Bird.
Free Bird.
There we go.
Michael Johnson will be performing at English Prairie Distillering on Saturday at 5 30 to 8 30.
and Michael's outstanding.
You'll enjoy Michael and his performance.
So a lot of live music happening in the area along with everything with Pumpkin Fest on Saturday.
There's a lot going on and not to mention just getting outside and enjoying the weather.
You bet
that's for sure but always good.
All roads lead to Lime Ridge right?
They do in October because so
you know I I mentioned the fish fry the Friday night fish fry I'll put it up against most everybody's it's very good they do an excellent job you actually get a full loin of fish or a filet not
what was pieced together to be a filet.
So it's really a great fish fry.
And then like I've said before, Lisa usually has some other special item that's maybe for those who don't like breading, there's also other options as well on the fish fry.
But then also this Saturday is their wood-fired pizza.
the wood-fired oven pizza night at the branding iron and that runs it'll be Saturday the 24th and they four to eight o'clock they serve so four o'clock in the afternoon to eight o'clock in the evening and they you know usually have some some really
you know kind of unique pizzas and not always red sauce sometimes it's a margarita sauce but I Lisa got back with me I we always talk about what the menu is gonna be and she said she hasn't finalized the menu so I thought maybe we could give her
Some ideas, of course, one of them has to be the traditional kind of the pizza you and I like.
Red sauce.
Red sauce.
I
maybe.
I'm in on that.
I would challenge the creativity side, though.
I have never seen oysters on a pizza.
I don't know.
Sardines?
Well, anchovies.
They play anchovies on pizza.
Maybe, I guess.
I wouldn't, in this day and age, we shouldn't restrict
freedom and I would challenge Lisa to find a good, I mean not just throw it on there, but what would you pair on a pizza with oysters?
I don't know.
I don't, I don't wouldn't try it, I wouldn't eat it, but I just challenge her.
Is that right?
That's what I heard.
I'll take your word for it,
and welcome to WIAA Tournament Volleyball.

The Richland Center soccer team is at Lake Mills tonight.
Earlier today I spoke with coach Tom Stadler of the Hornets soccer team.
With a good practice heading into this game I feel confident about our team's abilities.
What do you typically know about Lake Mills or the conference they play in?
Lake Mills is a very good team.
They are the number two seed.
We will be the underdogs going in and I don't mind that one bit.
In terms of what you have to do, what's the biggest thing you're going to have to try to accomplish?
Well, we're going to have to overwhelm them with our physicality.
Hornet soccer is built on speed, and so we have some really fast players, and we'll see if we can get to the ball first.
For your seniors, you want to have a good finish to the season, don't you?
We do, Phil.
And in fact, I would say we already have, by beating Mosten in that first round of the state tournament.
What a highlight for the seniors.
Good luck to the Richland Center boys soccer team at Lake Mills tonight.
Coming up we'll preview the match between Richland Center and New Glorious with coach Jamie Johnson of the Hornets.

Coach Jamie Johnson joins us.
Jamie, is she ready for the match?
What have you learned about tonight's opponent, Nuglaris?
You know, they're coming in.
We're the fourth seed.
They're the five seed.
You know, they just had a recent match.
I went five with Cambridge, who's 24 and four.
You know, they're having a, at a tournament this last weekend, they beat Reedsburg, which was really, you know, a good team.
And I believe they went five and oh on the day.
So they're coming in hot, you know, on a roll.
So they'll be coming in with some confidence with that.
As well, they've got some good size, a lot more size than we do.
Their middles, they get a lot of blocks.
Our block touches anyway.
They're a good defensive team that way.
They're senior dominated, so way it looks like to me, four or five on the top hitters are seniors, and they have a younger sophomore that's
Coming in and getting some hits here, but they spread the wealth around pretty good as numbers like kills and attempts and things.
So they spread the offense around.
We just got to be ready at all times on the defensive side of things.
Well, it sounds like it's not your typical first round game, Jamie.
This sounds like a pretty tough matchup.
Yeah, it is.
We've normally used to bend that three or four seed and had a little easier time.
I think it's going to be a challenge for us.
I think we, you know, I think we serve well, and I think we can maybe get on some runs against them that way.
So we're hoping to put the pressure on them.
You know, we're hoping for a little bigger turnout, but we, you know, a lot of the students, the soccer's away tonight, cross-country's got a team event thing for tomorrow, get ready for tomorrow, musical practice, just different things.
So, you know, just like that.
So hopefully we can, you know, get everybody inspired and play good ball.
You know when our last home match, that's our that's our goal.
Here's when the last home match and then try to win and move on in advance.
I guess it wouldn't be your last home match if you want and dodge will pull the upset tonight, right?
Yeah, that would be true.
We would uh, we would get to host dodge will that would be an awesome opportunity.
Um, so we've got to take care of things first here and and uh, be ready.
Uh, sometimes the good news is about tonight though is like.
Um, nuclear didn't get to play, uh, a match prior.
So it's their first tournament jitters too.
Sometimes it's, you know, you know, it's nice to get that by and get a little extra rest if need be or work on some things.
Um, but, you know, when you do plan that Tuesday, you kind of get the playoff jitters out of the way and you gain some confidence because you want to turn the game already.
So, um, that's been the case sometimes in this year.
They're coming in like us.
First tournament game.
I'm sure there'll be some nerves and.
You know, just got to survive the early runs, um, or avoid that, you know, if possible from them.
So, uh, we'll, we'll see what happens.
And in terms of, you know, your two seniors, uh, you want to kind of finish strong for them.
And I've noticed some of their stats, uh, they've been leading the way on the stat sheets, haven't they?
Yeah, they have, uh, elevies come on really well here lately.
Uh, we made it some of an adjustment too.
It's gives her a few more opportunities in the front row.
Um, you know, was we were working through Ella's injuries for a month.
Um, so, um, and Kylie's just been an anchor for us playing middle and right.
So receiving at times, doing the things that she needs to do, um, getting some really solo blocks and just getting touches and, and very coachable hitting the spots we asked her to hit.
So yeah, they're, they're definitely stepping up and leading the way.
So are you at full strength
tonight?
Um,
Fortunately, not 100%.
We had a little tweak here, injury this week.
I won't necessarily say who at this point, but Tuesday night, we were having a great practice and we were about three minutes from being done and we had a little injury there.
So we'll see how it goes tonight, see if they get cleared.
This is nothing unusual for us of not knowing until the match time.
We will, we'll see what happens, but we'll, we'll move forward and this team will rally, um, one way or the other.
I have full confidence in them.
Right.
It's nothing new for you.
You've done it all year.
So good luck as you get ready for a new glare as tonight coach.
Thank you.
You bet.

From
the Richland Center High School Field House, hello everyone, welcome to High School Volleyball, WIAA Tournament time here in Richland Center.
And a nice night out there.
In fact, they could be playing with the retractable roof if we had one here at the high school.
Richland Center comes in with a record of 21 and 14.
They finished out 6 and 4 in the Southwest Wisconsin Conference.
New glare is at 17 and 11, 3 and 7.
in their conference.
Marshall is one of the top teams in the entire sectional and this Nuglares team went four sets with them before they lost so Nuglares took a set from Marshall and a 3-1 final in that one so it shows that they have some talent, they have some ability and as coach Demi Johnson mentioned the Hornets are going to play at their best here tonight to get a win in advance to Saturday night's regional championship
at a site to be determined.
River Valley wins tonight.
It's at River Valley.
If Dodgeville wins, it would be here tonight on Saturday night, I should say, at the same time at 7 o'clock.
We'll call some of the stats for some of these teams, some of these players on these teams, including the two seniors, Kylie Burns and Elevee Weiss.
We talked about them from Richland Center.
And for Nugleris, they have some leaders as well.
In fact,
Brinley Stofield, one of their leaders and their leading setter, Nicole Burton, leading away on their team.
She's only a sophomore.
We'll have more about that coming up in a moment from the RCHS Fieldhouse High School volleyball coming your way tonight from WRCO Sports.

Look at that Richland Center and their season that had again 21 wins started out really strong and then as coach Johnson mentioned some injuries put them back a little bit but they still have finished strong this year they've been playing very consistent down the stretch and leading away is senior Elevee Weiss in oppressively 50 blocks on her credentials this year 227 hitting percentage so averaging
nearly three kills per game.
Also, Adeline Wirtz, their leading server, with 50 aces coming into the tournament.
And Adeline also has a little over three digs per set.
She also has helped lead the way with helping out with assists this year.
But the top of the charts for assists is Junior Aubrey Colstead, who has dished up 470 assists leading to points.
this year.
JC Gander with a good percentage, 185 kills on the year for Richland Center as well.
On the other side, Brinley Schofield of Nuglaris with a 371 hitting percentage.
Elena Brinkman with 76 blocks for Nuglaris and she also has nearly three digs per set.
Mason Cannell with 55 aces this year and Elena Brinkman with 211 digs.
And as we mentioned, Burton, their leading assist person, only a sophomore, 307 assists on the season.
Frankman, their leading hitter and has done well this year, so we'll talk more about them as the match goes on.
The Nuglaris, Glarner Knights, they are coached by Kayla Zimmerman now in her 15th year of head coaching duties.
We'll have more coming up after the timeout on WRCO, FM and Richland Center and wrco.com.

Game time decision, she is in the starting lineup, so that's good news for the Hornets tonight.
Being introduced to their hometown fans, and it must be, I'm not sure, it looks like
Must be favorite Jersey night or something.
We're seeing Bucks.
We're seeing Georgia jerseys and we've seen some Packard jerseys over there as well.

So they're getting down to nitty gritty as far as practice time is concerned.
Winner goes on and the team that doesn't win is going to hang up the cleats and move on to another sport or maybe play club ball the whole year, whatever you've got planned.

Lots of good matches coming up this evening and the original center boys soccer team playing in Lake Mills, getting underway as we speak as well.

And we'll get it started here in just a moment.

Richland Center, I think I will be running tomorrow at the WIAA sectional.
I talked to coach Eric Mindum this week.
Yeah, I think our boys on paper have a really good chance to get through.
It's tight.
There's probably four or five teams there that all have a legitimate shot to get through.
But I feel like if we run our best, we're going to be one of the two teams that advance onward to state.
And what about the girls team?
Yeah, girls team, it's within reach.
I think if we're healthy, they should be in that top five mix.
A couple other teams are kind of coming on strong right now.
Maybe one of the leaders has fell off, maybe enough to give our team a chance.
So I think if we run our best, at the very least, we should hopefully send one or two girls on individually.
And the hope is to get to run one more time this year.
Tell me about the sectional course.
What's that going to be like?
Yeah, not a course we've run before, but everything we can see, everything we can learn about it ahead of time is that it's flat.
So not a lot of hills there.
It may be not an advantage for us.
I feel like we run our best on the tougher courses.
A lot of tight turns, so it can be hard to see whether that affects times or not.
Kind of when you
run
one direction, you have to stop and run right back the other.
It's hard to stay on pace.
So it'll be a fast course.
I'm expecting times to be fast, not just from our team, but everybody else's.
Best of luck to all the runners in the area and to Richland Center, Ithaca.
Thanks to coach Eric Minden for his comments on the Dairyland Transportation High School Sports Update.
