Bringing you This Week in Huskies Athletics.

Another Thursday is here, and it's time for This Week in Huskies Athletics, powered by Michigan TechHuskies.com.

I am your host, Sam Sears, here on Mixed93 in the U-Bird, delivering all of the latest on Michigan Tech.

Turning us off with a recap of the weekend, the number 14 ranked hockey team swept Alaska at home in the final non-covered series of the season.

It was 3-0 Friday and 4-2 Saturday.

The number 14 ranked football team won its 16th straight minors cup after defeating rival Northern Michigan 56-33 at Curly Stadium.

They're now 6-1 overall, 3-0 in the GLIAC.

The cross-country teams competed at the Bradley Pink Classic at the Newman Golf Course on Friday afternoon.

In the White Race, the men's team finished second and the women's squad placed seventh.

Both teams placed 15th in the Red Invitational Race.

The volleyball team went 1-2 in the 18th annual Midwest Region Volleyball Crossover Tournament.

They swept Finlay and fell in five to Missouri St.

Louis in number 22 Indianapolis.

They are now 10 and 11 overall.

And the soccer team fell at NMU Sunday in their only game of the weekend.

Now moving on over to our press conferences, Michigan Tech's soccer coach Melissa Kuhar had plenty to say about their game at NMU.

We didn't play well from the start, right?

Gave up the early goal two minutes in, had no energy, like we just, we didn't come out to play.

You know, that's something we're kind of going to the drawing boards this week to try to figure out what happened.

Because that wasn't our team.

That wasn't what we normally, the products we can put out there from the start or throughout a game.

And so it's a bit frustrating on our end.

I know the girls are frustrated.

But yeah, we just have to rebound and head into a weekend that we have to win games.

How disappointing was it to go from the weekend before where you did so many good things to then that?

Yeah, it's it's frustrating.

It's disappointing and that's kind of what I voice to our team right you they showed

Our staff, they showed people around the Michigan Tech area that like, we're a good team when we can play.

And then to go to Northern and kind of lay a bit of an egg and not, not be able to produce anything.

And man, we couldn't even pass to, to our own team to keep possession.

So it just kind of, it's frustrating because I know, and they know we're a good team.

And we can't just not show up to play.

We have to be able to raise the level and get to where we need to be to kind of compete in these games.

Coach Guhar was that.

asked about how she plans on turning things around.

We got to get wins.

Plain and simple.

And they know that.

And I voice that to them.

This weekend's going to be huge if we got to get out with some points, whether that's two wins, ties, anything.

We got to get points in both games.

And so they know that.

And there's that pressure of that.

But on our end, it's continuing to work on the final third, continuing to build confidence.

Even when things aren't going well, you still have to have some fun and you have to bring some enjoyment to what you're doing into the grind.

So we'll continue to kind of do that this week and just try to keep the level high, but also a positive environment to do it in.

But they know the pressure of it's crunch time now.

Again, that was Melissa Kuhar at her press conference over at Michigan Tech this week.

The tech soccer team returns home for the final time this weekend, hosting Ferris State on Friday at 6 and Parkside on Sunday at noon.

So be sure to head on out there and support the team.

Now, before we move on over to the press conference of Michigan Tech football coach, Dan Metlack, let's listen to the highlights of Saturday's game against Northern Michigan.

It is a handoff to Jake Roof.

Good blocking out there.

Cuts it back up and into the end zone.

Touchdown Huskies!

Excellent blocking set up by Michigan Tech.

With 10.54 to go in the first quarter.

Huskies strike first, 6-0.

And Bueno to move the pocket on second down.

Steps back, airs went out down the seam for Lerner.

He has it!

Fork Race!

Touchdown Huskies!

Once again, the Huskies find a way to take the lid off the defense and find Abram Larner for a big score.

Larner, better run left.

Breaks through ladies wide open to the 30, to the 20, 15, 10, 5, touchdown!

Huskies!

Abram with a big catch earlier Elliott with a big run to end the first quarter.

And the Huskies strike again.

Bueno steps up in the pocket, guns it down the field, down the seam.

It is caught by Larner.

Little flea flicker to Kearns.

That's what I'm talking about.

Touchdown Huskies.

Exactly what we were looking for there.

Abram Larner makes the reception, flips one back to Bryce Kearns.

And Bryce runs it all the way in for a Michigan Tech score.

Rolls left.

throws that way to Abram Larner, who dives to the pylon, reaches for the end zone.

Touchdown Huskies.

Try to get everybody into position.

The ball is down.

The clock is running.

Wildcats are still trying to get into position.

And with one second, they do get a play off Stevens.

Then it gun it down the middle to Isaac Olson, who will get hit on the play.

And things will finally come to an end as Hunter King gets the stop.

And the Michigan Tech Huskies

once again

win the Miners Cup.

Defeating Northern Michigan 56 to 33.

And with that, let's move on over to the press conference with the football coach, Dan Metlak.

Of course, he was first asked his thoughts about the win over Northern Michigan.

Yeah, it's always good to win that game.

Obviously, it's a priority here.

You know, thought we handled our business and to get 16 in a row.

Great for the program, all the alums.

It's a great day.

and did not love the way we showed up as a full team, obviously.

And a lot of that had to do with the mental approach to where we were at on Saturday morning.

Felt like we were in a good spot Monday through Thursday with the way we practiced, and where our heads were at.

But clearly, that was not the case when we showed up on Saturday.

So I did enough to get it done, and that's all it matters.

And sometimes, again, that's sort of one of those things where as long as you get it done, it doesn't necessarily matter how it happened.

Yeah, I mean, that's fair.

At the same time, the way we approach that week and...

how much we talk about it, what it means to this entire program and the university, you know, I'd like to see us be a little more locked in than we were.

And, you know, unfortunately, right when you're dealing with 18 to 22 year old kids, you know, they tend to look at a record or who you're playing and so on.

And that kind of creeps in.

And, you know, we just got to get to the point where we're playing to our standard, no matter who's across the field from us.

And that part was disappointing, but.

We got through it, so that's all that matters.

Ben asked about this Saturday's opponent, Ferris State.

Yeah, I mean, they are, you know, they're the standard in division two football.

It's not just our league, but everybody is chasing those guys and rightfully so.

They're talented everywhere, very well coached.

You know, I think the most impressive part about them is you turn on the tape.

It doesn't matter what game you're watching.

Their guys are flying around.

They're playing hard.

You know, there's no nothing on film that you watch where it looks like they're, you know, kind of just oozing through a game because they think they're better than everybody.

You know, I think that's the most impressive part is they know they're better than everybody and they continue to play at high level no matter who's in the game.

So we're going to have our hands full.

There's no question about that.

But our guys are looking for that opportunity.

They haven't lost in 37 games.

You know, and it's obviously gonna be a challenge being at their place.

Gonna be a great atmosphere, but we're looking forward to the trip.

At last, he was asked on what he likes about how his team has developed since week one.

Yeah, I mean, I think anytime you talk about going through a fall from a coaching side, it's wanting to get better from week one to two to three to four and so on.

So I felt like we took.

incredible strides in the bye week with where we were at from what we were doing the first four weeks.

Not only dealing with the injuries, but getting guys more acclimated with what we're doing offensively, defensively, special teams wise.

I felt like we played well down at Roosevelt.

Obviously played well against GV.

I think we did some good things on Saturday.

I just didn't like our mentality.

We got to get the guys back and we had a really good meeting yesterday with everybody and then broke up and offensive defense did the same thing, had a good practice last night.

So I think if we can get our guys to understand what it is that we do and focus on us, we have a chance going down there.

A huge challenge in front of us.

We all know that.

We got to get our guys back to the mentality we had during the week of the GV week rather than what we had last week.

And there's not going to be a situation where we can go down there and play like we did last Saturday and even put ourselves in the game.

So everything goes back to taking care of what we can control and make sure our guys are in the right mindset.

you know, when we get down, they're obviously not flinching and not backing down just because what their record is or who's in their uniforms, we got to go play tech football.

The press conference of Michigan Tech football coach Dan Metlek.

The team travels the number one Ferris State this Saturday with kickoff at one.

Free game will be at 12.30 when Josh Hulotello makes the call on 93.5 FM.

It's time for a break.

This week in Huskies Athletics is powered by Michigan Tech Huskies.com.

The nationally ranked Michigan Tech hockey and football teams traveled to Big Rapids this weekend to take on Ferris State and you'll hear it all on Mix 93.

Friday night, the hockey Huskies take on the Bulldogs at 7.

Then Saturday, the football Huskies battle the number one Bulldogs on the gridiron

at 1.

Bueno steps up in the pocket, guns it down the field, down the seam.

It is caught by Larner, little flea

flicker to Kearns.

That's what I'm talking about.

Touchdown Huskies!

Followed by more, Tech Ferris Hockey at 7.

That did not break through the front of the hole.

A shot mixed in by Jay to the net.

The Michigan Tech hockey and football teams both at Ferris State this weekend and only on the exclusive radio home of the Huskies, MIX 93.5, WKMJ, and Stream Live at TheMix93.com or on your free Civic Media app.

Come

on!

Welcome back to this weekend, Huskies Athletics here on MIX 93 and the Uber.

I am your host Sam Sears.

Let's head right on over to the press conference of Cindy Pendrell, the Michigan Tech volleyball coach.

The team went 1-2 in the 18th annual Midwest Region Volleyball Crossover Tournament, and Coach Pendrell's first question was, how she felt the crossover went.

I thought it went really well.

Obviously 1-2 could have been better, but we played very, very well, and we were facing very, very tough opponents.

Two out of the three opponents we faced are regionally ranked.

I think Indy might be nationally ranked at this point too.

So, um, yeah, just, you know, very quality opponents.

It was an awesome tournament for us.

Uh, our focus was to, um, enjoy the process and really embrace what's right in front of us, whether it's your touch, the single point, whatever it is.

Um, and we were super competitive.

Um, we were very driven and focused.

So, um, all of the intangibles were there and, you know, we keep telling the team, just continue to trust the process.

And one of these five centers will go our way eventually, but, you know, we'll get some good bounces eventually, but the only thing we can control.

Um, our, is our, our process and then the outcome should come, you know, eventually, but it's, it's hard.

Um, you know, we, of course.

All the what ifs are, I think are the hard part, right?

Um, so, you know, the what if, you know, we could be however, whatever our record is, but, um, yeah, we're, we're trusting the process.

We're enjoying the battle.

We were so competitive last weekend.

So overall, it was a win for us.

The coach was then asked how she believes the team needs to improve for the final stretch of the year.

Yeah.

It's continuing to believe, um, that we can pull off big things.

We have a huge opportunity ahead of us with, uh, Grand Valley twice.

Um, we have not seen them yet this year.

And honestly, the crossover was the first time that we watched them play, um, obviously different matches.

Um, but we have a huge opportunity in front of us to knock off a team that's ahead of us in the standings.

And I'm, my goal is to split.

It's so just like in hockey, right?

When you got a home away series, like you're trying to split, obviously I would love a two O, but I think it's very important that we show up for both of those matches.

Um, and then we need to take care of business against a struggling Roosevelt team who hasn't had much success this year, but they did beat Northern.

Um, so that's something to, you know, keep note.

Uh, we've got another shot at Wayne at home.

Uh, they had a good crossover.

Um, and then we've got our, you know, senior night, which everyone shows.

up for, which is super fun.

So, um, yeah, it's, it's continuing to believe that we can do the little things and we can do them successfully.

And by focusing on the process, then the good bounces will come our way.

The press conference of Michigan Tech volleyball coach, Cindy Pindrell, the team gets back to Gliac action this weekend at Grand Valley State on Friday at six Roosevelt on Saturday at three, going to be heading to the last press conference of the day.

The one for Michigan Tech hockey coach, Bill McCulloch, but first some highlights of the sweep against Alaska this weekend here at home.

Here's another shot, this one wide by Brenton and the Huskies with a shooting gallery.

Huskies Grady.

Grady hangs on to it.

Now he'll send it off the wall again.

Got it to the side of the goal.

I'm able to get it for Reinhardt.

Reinhardt to the middle.

Here's a shot by Miller.

Goal!

Miller with a work of the wrist shot from the left-stop circle.

Grady's going to get a point from this one.

And the Huskies go all by three.

Huskies.

That could cross the line.

Come the Nanooks.

And that is going to do it.

What a performance tonight by Owen Bernerskevich with the shutout.

30 shots.

30 saves for Owen Bernerskevich and the Huskies 3-0.

Able to get it down to the left wing corner.

Kepke knocked right to the front of the goal.

A shot, big save by Jay to the net, and they score!

Warringlard number 18 for the Huskies.

Bane's at home, and the Huskies take a one-nothing lead here in the first period.

Back up top now for Shifley.

Shifley looking towards to that.

He'll shoot!

Score!

Wow!

Shifley with the goal of a power play for Michigan Tech.

And we have time.

2-2.

Ladies and gentlemen, the offensive zone for Michigan Tech.

Back to the point here.

Shifley with the shoot!

The Alaskan Nation played their hearts out here tonight and all weekend long.

In the press conference this week, Michigan's Ag Hockey coach Bill McCulloch was asked about the sweep.

Anytime you can sweep in college hockey, mission accomplished, it's definitely the goal.

It's hard to sweep every weekend, give Alaska credit.

I thought they played hard, but really proud of our effort as a group, especially on Saturday.

I thought face some adversity.

And the way we handled it was really proud of our group.

He was then asked about how it is getting into the conference schedule and about this weekend's opponent, Ferris State.

Well, it's the start of...

you know, our conference league play.

Points are going to be at a premium.

Every game matters, every game counts.

You know, right now they're the team that's in our way.

You know, I get respect for their coach and their team.

We know they're going to compete in battle.

They have home ice and it's going to be a hostile environment.

So for us, you know, it's about our preparation and then our execution.

You know, it's going to be a difficult series and a difficult matchup.

I know it's really early in the season, but this is Tech's highest ranking in over three years.

Right now, is that something that you pay any attention to this early in the season?

You know, it is and it isn't.

It's great to get national recognition, but we got to keep moving forward.

We got to keep improving.

We got to keep getting better.

We got to stick to the process.

There's going to be a lot of growth.

And there's going to be a lot of bumps too, and we just got to continue to find ways to have success as a group.

But it's one game at a time, one day at a time.

That's our approach to it.

And last, he was asked about what he likes about Buttiskevich as a player.

Oh, he's stopping Pox.

Yeah.

No, he looks a little bit more of a calmness and maturity and confidence to him this year.

He's been a leader for us.

He's wearing an assistant captain.

He's playing Pox well.

You know, I think he has the confidence and trust in our group.

But, you know, obviously when it comes down to it, I thought, you know, Friday night, he was just outstanding.

We had a couple of breakdowns early in the game on Friday, and he kind of bailed our group

out.

When we talked earlier this season, you mentioned that you wanted Bart to have better communication with the D. Are you seeing that three weeks from the year?

Yeah, I think that's a fair comment.

I'm really happy with him.

Communication is such a big part of the game.

We really stress to our team, like if you're at an NHL game, you can hear how much talk and how much communication.

there is between players you know it's such an important aspect that makes everybody's job a little bit easier especially on the breakouts right like he's seeing it and if you're going back and you're looking and it's it's a tough tough play for a defenseman at times and anytime you can talk as a group and communicate it kind of helps helps with any kind of shared responsibility or indecisions.

Again, that was Tech Hockey coach Bill McColt.

Again, the Tech Hockey team travels on down the Ferris State to begin CCHA play.

Punk drops at 7.07 each night, which means the pregame on MIX 93 begins at 6.30.

Now, before we head out the door, some quick updates about Michigan Tech basketball.

The women's basketball team has a BSN team store open until October 29th.

You can purchase exclusive Nike and other BSN products and men's, women's, and youth sizes, and support your Huskies while doing so.
