Now, from the John McKinnon Student Eye Serena, here's the radio play-by-play voice of the Hockey Huskies, Dirk Hemroff.
All right, thank you very much.
Welcome, Husky Hockey fans.
It is a travel week for Michigan Tech.
Bill, head out.
and go to Big Rapids to take on Ferris State in the opening week of the CCHA schedule.
Head coach Bill McCount is with us up in the bobbles, the media center at the press box, here at the John McGinnis, student at Nice, the Huskies coming off an impressive sweep against a very good Alaska team.
Coach, congratulations.
Again, always nice to get a couple more wins here at home and you guys remain undefeated, which I know is so important, undefeated here at the Max so far.
Yeah, thanks, Dirk.
A pleasure to be here with you, as always.
So, talk a little bit about this weekend, Coach.
You know, a lot of things going on.
We had to come back in one game.
We had the shout-out.
There was a lot of good play, I thought, and overall, I thought we stepped up our game for maybe the week before.
Yeah, no question.
I liked our compete, our group effort.
I didn't think we started great on Friday night, but, boy, the next two periods were outstanding.
Hats off to Tyler Shay, their goaltender.
I thought he played outstanding and kept them in at both nights.
Saturday, we had some tremendous chances.
I know there was a few pucks that I think just hit them, particularly in that second period.
Had an unfortunate bounce in the third period.
A guy made a nice play on a breakaway for them.
We're down to one.
But really proud of our resolve and the way we stuck with it.
We certainly weren't getting any calls.
But the way that we just, the maturity of this group and just weren't going to be denied, I thought the third period was unbelievable after that.
It was two guys that got recognized by the CCHJ for their performances last weekend, Owen Bartoskevic in goal.
And of course, Luke Shipley with the tying goal and then game winners first two as a Husky.
on Saturday night.
But you're going back to Owen.
Both nights.
I guess the shutout on Friday night.
And we were talking during the broadcast is when your goaltender makes some big saves early it can frustrate the other team.
And that's probably what happened because Alaska was playing really well in that first period Friday night.
Yeah I think you know he really.
kept us in it until we got kind of under our feet and you know just really calm and then even Saturday I mean the one we lose a face off it takes a kind of a weird bounce off the back of the net and they get hands at it and then you know we have a you know a bobble puck or or whatever and the guy gets a break away and that was a an unbelievable move you know
You
know
present and shot
and then
backhand kind of shelf, but I mean He was unbelievable all weekend.
He's been so good for us And their goal.
It was good too.
So we I thought You know the expected goals for analytically we should have you know if you believe in analytics We should have had a couple more at least each night, but can you describe what that
is again?
I think I asked you this last year and it's somewhat of a
relatively new term, isn't it, of a couple years, or
at least for me it is.
Yeah, when you're talking about expected goals for and, you know, there's a couple different platforms that you can use, you know, whether it's SportLogic or different sites and not each site is completely the same.
They
have different criteria, but I would say when you get slot generating,
You know, we used to call those great A's.
So when you get poxed to the slot, that inner circle, you know, there's different criteria if it's a screen or if it's a second chance opportunity, which exponentially.
you know, percentage wise increases your chance to score, but those are all factors in it.
Um, and goals for and goals against.
So we try to, you know, get as many of those chances as you can.
Um, it's not foolproof because like maybe if a player misses the net on one of those, it might not take it into consideration.
Um, same thing with the goal tending.
There's different, different models that when they, when they, that inner slot shot.
save percentage and stuff like that's a big deal but I would say in you know it's it's not always accurate and gold tender can make a couple big saves or you don't finish or you hit the crossbar the post but over time it's uh you want to continue to generate those those chances and those looks is that one of the
Because I hear that from you guys all the time now.
Is that one of the main stats that you guys present to the team, to the guys?
We actually don't really present that to the team, but we use that internally as a coaching staff and then we try to just replicate a lot of our offensive zone play and try to generate and use a lot of video to
kind of teach and help them understand and pre scan.
So they know what their options are before they get the puck and what their options are.
You know, so there's a lot goes into it.
And you know, not going to give it all away here.
Keep those secrets there.
But Luke Shipley gets his first two goals, as we mentioned, they were both in that third period.
They were they were huge.
They were really nice goals.
And we'll hear those goals and Luke coming up later on in the show here today.
But talk a little bit about him.
I took that
tough penalty on Friday night was out for a lot of the game but for him to come back and have that game that was pretty cool.
Yeah and like just to kind of expand on what we've been talking about that offensive zone play is to get pucks into a good area of the ice and if you look where he scored both of those goals that's what we've been really harping on our defensemen to get.
get to that area.
And then, you know, Ali Hansen did an unbelievable job screening there and getting an anchor at the net.
And both of those goals, we had both of that to a tee.
So that was really encouraging.
That was a part of
our Saturday morning meeting as a group and as a team, but good for Luke.
He's got really good offensive ability.
He made a great play to Maddie Van Blerkamp on the weak side of the ice there.
And there was another one, I think, hit Tyler's shoulder there.
But yeah, it was really, I think, improved a lot since he's got here.
He's starting to understand the system.
He's starting to feel comfortable.
He's got some really good chemistry with Tyler Miller.
We're talking with head coach Bill McCulloch here on MIX 93 coming off a 3-0 shutout and a 4-2 win against Alaska this past weekend heading to Fairbanks, heading to Ferris this weekend, Friday and Saturday night.
Remember, both games are 7-0-7 drop of the puck.
Michigan Tech football is going to be down there at the same time, which is kind of cool.
And so I know there are some fans that are going down for hockey and for football, which is going to be a neat thing.
We'll take a quick time out.
We'll be back talking about the Ferris State series coming up as the Huskies open up their CCHS
schedule, it's more of the Michigan Tech Huskies
Hockey Radio Show right after these.
All sales do not include taxes and deposits at Bucko's party store of Calumet.

Because the mountain on the can is blue.
And also it's really cold.
Every Coors Light is cold filtered, cold-loggered, and cold-packaged.
Notice how many times I said cold?
Three times.
It's that cold.
So make sure the mountain on your can of Coors Light is blue.
Because that means it's ready to enjoy.

His conversation with us coming up in just a little bit this you can tackle head down to big rapids to take on Ferris State University Friday and Saturday night 707 drop of the puck right here on mix 93 from a big laban arena and You know the Bulldogs have played some tough teams already that they're looking for their first win and They've got some players that can put the puck in the net if they have to and Brett Riley, you know young coach getting that
program and working with the right now, I think there's a lot of good things that's coming out of Ferris State and any team in the CCHA can do it any night and Huskies are going to have to be good this weekend, Coach.
Yes, well, start a league play, right?
So everybody's equal, points are to premium.
Being in a road, hostile environment, you know, I think they're looking to get off.
And so we we have to be prepared and it's gonna be a hostile environment and It's the start of our regular season there in our way.
Yeah
another road trip I know the guys are looking forward to it one other guy that I wanted to mention really quick close Morgan
Brady got his first two games in as a Husky and I know we talked a little bit about him after Friday night's game But boy he looked good all weekend.
I thought
yeah, he rang one off the crossbar clearly had the goalie beat there, but more than that just Solid defensively made really good plays shut down plays.
He's just a big strong
Man,
he's a
Hulk.
Like, so, you know, he might be a freshman, but I don't know, he's a baby Huey, but he's fun to coach.
He's really done a nice job, came in, spent good in practice, took advantage of opportunity, you know, so it's, you know, that's what you want to see as a coach.
You want to see players make, force you to make tough decisions and have success.
We want everybody to have success and,
Probably the toughest part of my job is, you know, we have 29 players and I have confidence in all of them.
And just to try and get everybody in, you're always second guessing as a coach if they can add a little bit more.
And, you know, really have a lot of respect for what everybody brings to the rink every day and their approach.
And we're only as strong as our weakest link.
We don't have any weak links, so that's a good thing.
So
many head coaches do things differently, and obviously you have relationships different with players one-on-one than maybe assistant coaches have.
You have to have that barrier or that cushion there sometime.
But let's take Morgan Brady for an instance.
You were happy with his play.
Is that part of your personality to...
Seek him out individually like after a series like that and say hey you did a good job Or is that the assistant coach's job or is there any contact?
You know after somebody has that first big weekend.
I think it's an important You know when we have success as a group that they know it and as a team and and you know what happens in our
our room we kind of keep private but you know very complimentary when a player comes in and has success I think they need to know that and the group needs to know that and we have a very unselfish group where they're happy for each other and you can you can hear it even on the bench when a guy makes a play say it's you know Tristan Delisle right now made some really nice plays or Morgan makes a nice play you know they're a tight group
But we as a coach, you know, my my philosophy is to really reinforce good behavior and good habits.
And and I would say more when it's areas of growth or constructive criticism or things that that we try to handle one on one or in private and try to show that maybe through video and and you know, what's a better play we could make.
And you're going to have things that happen in a game.
You know, we had a player, you know, fall and overskate a puck and
But you know what?
We're not going to change our style or system.
We're going to continue to let our players play positionless and play free and for their development and for their growth individually.
But things are going to happen.
You never play perfect in this game.
And it's kind of like life.
You just keep trying to get better every day.
And that's really our message to it, what we try to install in our player.
And that's our culture.
That's our standard.
Wayne Weller, Darcy Martin, and Darcy Martin.
Darcy Wade.
Darcy Wade, a different Darcy.
Darcy Wade, and of course Colin Murphy inducted for hockey this past week.
And we talked to Colin during the second intermission.
He talked about how excited he was to go down to the locker room and do the starting line.
Let's talk a little bit about that.
I
was thinking maybe Darcy Martin.
He was five o'clock somewhere.
But anyways, too funny.
Heck of a player here too from British Columbia.
I grew up listening to him on the radio.
Yeah, but it was funny to have have Wayne obviously national champion The 65 group was so so exciting and then Darcy Gold tenors done so much for Michigan Tech for the University and the Arhaki program and the fundraising and then to have
you know, calling Murphy.
Murph was with him.
I kind of cracked a little bit of a joke.
I said, Murph, I didn't realize all three had played in the same era.
So obviously, but to have them do the starting lineup, I thought was so inspirational and it was so great for our players to see guys that have been the leaders and best and such a huge honor for them to come back and get
recognize for their achievement and what they've done at Michigan Tech University.
So real special weekend, but it was a lot of fun.
You know, it was really cool too because Colin Murphy, you know, was here when I took over from Bob Olson and I had forgotten he, you know, because you were here when we got the sweets.
And when that whole thing happened or right around, you know, he was not here.
So that was all brand new.
He had not seen that yet.
Sometimes when we're here a lot, we forget about who doesn't even know us.
That's some of the things that
we do.
Well, he wouldn't have the suites or the scoreboard.
Correct.
The
video
board.
Yeah, the video
board came when you were doing now.
Yeah.
So,
yeah, awesome.
Well, coach, thanks for your time.
We're looking forward to a road trip.
It's going to be nice weather.
down in Big Rapids, a good travel weather for the team, and it's going to be a tough weekend at CCHJ.
Here we go, right,
Coach?
It always is, but
let's go.
It's time.
Sounds good.
Thanks a
lot, Coach.
Appreciate it.
Thank you.
Head coach, Bill McCult here on the Michigan Tech Huskies Hockey Radio Show.
We've got Luke Shipley, one of those CCHJ players of the week coming up right after this.

Welcome back to the Michigan Tech Husky Talkie radio show on this Tuesday morning.
Michigan Tech traveling this weekend, taking their final one record to Ferris State to open up the CCHA portion of their schedule.
A couple of big conference games against the Bulldogs.
707 drop of the puck.
Both Friday and Saturday night will have the pregame starting at 6.30 here on MIX 93 WKMJ.
Yesterday we had a chance to talk to new Husky, Luke Shipley, who earned defenseman of the week in the CCHA with his two goals, including the game winner on Saturday night against the
They were both beauties, but the first one was really nice.
Yeah, first one was on a power play.
I think we had a good entry I carried and kicked it out I want to say Jansen and he made a nice playover to Gordon for the entry and we got set up
It kind of came off a shot or I don't actually know what it came off, but he rimmed it back out to me.
Gee, and I kind of got to the middle and there was a good screen.
I put a good shot and went
in.
You feel good when that first one goes in with a new team?
Yeah, no, I think I've kind of been building on this for a couple weeks now.
So it feels good to finally get one under my belt.
Second one wasn't much different.
It wasn't a power play and it wasn't really a pass back to you.
Yeah, there was, I think the boys had a hard four check.
They created a loose puck and popped out to the middle and I think there's a screener front and I talked to her home.
So can you talk a little bit about, I know we're really young in the season.
Any big differences from last year at UMass Lowell to here?
Yeah, definitely.
I think we have a special group here.
I mean, I think Mox has been talking about that from the start that we're building something special and we are a special group.
And I think our style here fits my game quite a bit better.
We really want the D to be active up top.
and include them and the defense to create offense.
So I think that's definitely helped my game.
And I also think we break the puck out as a five man unit.
So we spend less time in our D zone and more time in there.
And I think it's really fit my game well.
You know, watching this whole deep core, there's a lot of guys like you that have that offensive ability, but we're not cheating for offense, which is so key at that position, isn't it?
Yeah, I think I mean, it's kind of came from our coaching staff, but I think every guy on the back end is capable of producing and also defending.
So I think that's especially normally see that normally you see maybe a couple offensive guys and then strictly some defensive guys.
But I think we have guys that can do everything and that's kind of what a championship team needs.
You're getting involved right away in the community here.
You went with us to one of the local schools to meet some fourth graders.
Tell us how that was for you.
Yeah, it was cool.
It's always fun helping.
in the community and seeing a smile on the kids when you're around.
It's pretty funny.
They ask some funny questions.
Something something that I I did when I was younger, so I appreciate it when I was younger So I'm happy to get back to the community and do what I can
when you guys were on the ice on Friday Are you able to tell that those kids are down there by the by the ice level or is it kind of tough?
I mean you're pretty you're focused on the game for the most part So I mean there might be a few times that TV time That's what you're looking around or are checking all but you're pretty you're pretty focused on the game in the moment
How about the crowds this weekend?
How did they affect you guys on the ice?
Yeah, I mean I've definitely never played in front of
fans that are crazy like this and involved and always doing something whether that's cheered us on or maybe tripped another team.
No, I'm great for the fans here.
It's crazy.
So I love it so far.
Second road trip of the season coming up.
Do you like getting in on the bus and hanging out with the guys for a couple of days like that?
Yeah, it's definitely fun.
I mean, I've had my fair share of travel through junior.
So the bus, the bus has its fun times and it's not some fun times.
But no, it's definitely fun, especially coming to a new team.
You get to, you get to ball with the guys and spend a lot of time.
Luke Shippley, number four for the Huskies, back on the blue line.
He is the defenseman of the week in the CCHA with two goals on Saturday night, including the game win.
against Alaska to help complete the sweep.
We've got more of the Michigan Tech Huskies hockey radio show coming your way right after this here on MIX 93 WKMJ.

Suggest the metro bus.
Departing in 12 minutes.
Point taken, Lexi.
We'll grab a ride.
If you drink, don't drive.
Decide to ride.

Welcome back from the John McGinnis Tuner Dice Arena.
Dirk Hembrough with you on the Michigan Tech Huskies Hockey Radio Show on this Tuesday morning.
Another nice day outside and beautiful here in the ring and the Huskies won't be playing here this week and they will be at Ferris State University in Big Rapids.
And game times are 7 0 7, both Friday and Saturday night.
You can tune on into the pre games at 6 30.
Other CCHA matchups of this weekend.
Bowling Green is at Lake Superior State University.
Bowling Green coming in at 2 and 4.
The Lakers at 2 and 2.
That'll be a taffy able arena.
on Friday and Saturday night.
Then other CCHA teams will still continue non-conference play.
Augustana will be at Ohio State.
By the way, Augustana is number 13 right now, and they are playing really good.
They are undefeated, 3-0 and 1.
They'll be at Ohio State, and they will then be coming here in two weeks after this weekend.
the sixth and seventh of the member don't miss that series that is going to be a great series here at the john mcginnis to nicer enough tickets are available for that today we august and at ohio state uh... the midget state visiting minnesota deluth
And Duluth, of course, number 90 in the nation right now.
They're 3-1-2, Bemidji 1-2-0.
So a good opportunity for Coach Saratory and the Beavers to get an upset on the road.
Minnesota State, struggling out of the gates here, but have been playing some really good teams.
They will be at St.
Thomas, former CCHA member.
And that will be Friday.
And I think those are both Friday and Saturday night if I'm not mistaken.
But that's your schedule for Michigan Tech.
and for the other CCHA schools in action this weekend.
Some other notable non-conference play, Michigan, matching up against Western Michigan this weekend.
And also, North Dakota and Minnesota, in fact, that North Dakota, Minnesota series starts at 3M Arena at Mariucci on Thursday evening at 8 o'clock.
So we'll be watching that one pretty closely, then they'll play on Friday.
But that's two of the
series that don't involve CCHA teams that really kind of stand out.
Also, Boston College will be at Denver this weekend.
Atlanta Cocky is continuing to get some games in in conference play.
Sacred Heart will be at Holy Cross.
Robert Morris at Bentley.
But those are your games.
Again, the only two CCHA conference games this weekend.
Michigan Tech at Ferris State and Bowling Green at Lake Superior State.
University and what I remind you that yes that November 6th and 7th weekend is the next home games for Michigan Tech hockey tickets are available for that weekend and all kinds of great promotions going on so call the central ticket office or go online at buy huskies tickets dot com the central ticket office number is 906-487-2073 go to buy huskies tickets dot com or you can just stop in the sdc ticket office
face-to-face.
And again, our games this weekend, 7-0-7 from the MAC, or from the Eva Glavin Arena in Big Rapids at Ferris State University.
The football team will also be down there.
Take you down to the number one Ferris State Bulldogs in football.
Great opportunity for Coach Metlack and the football Huskies.
That will be a one o'clock kickoff.
And that is why they moved back the Saturday football game.
to a 7 o'clock start instead of 6.
Normally that would be 6 o'clock on Saturday down in Big Rapids, like it is here.
But because the Huskies are taking on the Bulldogs in football as well, they just want to make sure they have everybody, all their technical staff, ready for both games on that Saturday.
So that's why both games for hockey, 7-0-7, right here on MIX 93 with 6-30 pre-games.
Thanks to Sam, back at our studios, engineering the programs.
Hey, thanks to head coach Bill McCult, of course, and...
to Luke Shipley who joined us on the broadcast and thanks to our sponsors as well.
