The Houghton Gremlins are taking on the visiting Gladstone Braves in week seven of the MHSAA regular season.

Pre-game show here on WMPL, and I'm joined once again by Houghton Gremlins head coach, Eli Loma.

Coach, thank you so much for your time.

Yeah, you're welcome.

So I wanted to get started first with the game last week.

The final score, a 34 to 13 loss to the Calumet Copper Kings.

I wanted to start by talking about the first quarter of that game, because it was basically deadlocked on both sides for the first 12 minutes of the game.

The Gremlins defense went out there and played

Really an exceptional first quarter overall

than

that last play of the first quarter, a big QB run.

And the second quarter wound up being pretty rough.

So what do you think changed during that second quarter that led to the Copper Kings being able to kind of break open their offensive scheme a bit?

They found Seagap.

That's basically what they did.

Then they started running the Seagap over and over again.

We had set up to stop anything inside and we did the really good job of that.

Then they they found that space between the ends and our tackles and then they also started getting outside of us a set of our ends and They were just able to run those two spots over and over again You got what you saw last Friday.

Yeah, so

Obviously, it's a tough situation for the team to try to adjust to that.

And after the second quarter, you were able to mostly keep with the Copper Kings.

I believe you actually tied roughly in scoring for the third and fourth quarter after being 0-0 for the first.

So

it was really that second quarter where it seemed like things kind of got away from you.

But are there any other big things that you're hoping to focus on this week, like any critical issues that you saw that you want to make sure are solidified before this game?

Yeah.

If you watched the last game, we had two kickoff returns where it hit one of our players and they ended up picking it up.

So basically two on-site kicks, those two possessions, that's, I mean, you can't give up the ball to Calumet like that twice and expect to win the game.

So yeah, that's a big thing.

Special teams, things got to change there.

And an emphasis from last week, we wanted to score when we got in the red zone.

Just before half, we couldn't quite put it in.

So that's again, we got to do better in the red zone.

So red zone and special teams, we do better there.

It's a different game.

All right.

And.

One of the players that really had an exceptional performance for you last week was Sam Roth as a wide receiver.

He had both receiving touchdowns, I believe, for the Gremlins on offense.

He caught an interception in the game as well.

So a really solid performance from Sam.

Are you hoping that he can kind of develop and build on that momentum?

Or are you hoping to see more in general from the rest of the receiving core and the other skill position players on offense to support that play?

Right.

So my

I feel like a lot of my job is I need to make sure I get the ball to Sam in space because if you saw him on that, there's the bubble screen out there, out wide.

If you see him move, you know why he needs the ball.

So that is part of my job.

If he's not getting the ball, then I'm doing my job poorly.

But it's not just Sam.

We have players all over who can

be electric.

Like the other receiving cord, Kale, Olin Keddo, Alex Aver, Terry Nolan, I mean he needs the ball more.

All of them need the ball more honestly, which means that we just need to sustain some drives and if we can get the ball to our players out in space, we're going to do all right.

For our listeners back home, if you remember the Ishmael Westwood game a few weeks ago, Kaila Olin Kato was the player who scored on that crazy kickoff return touchdown that we saw.

I'm sure you

remember that

one coach.

Taking a look at the line a little bit, we saw two players go down for you in the game against the Copper Kings.

Bryson Nettle and Mason Joyle both seemed to take a pretty bad hit.

Are we expecting to see them anytime soon?

Or do you think they have a chance to play this week for you?

So

first of all, those two in that game.

they were kind of monsters like yeah they they were amazing like two seniors who were really excited to beat Calumet and then uh yeah it gets taken away um so the it was both of them had a leg injury and they're out for this game for

sure

um next week we can reassess but um that's all being done uh behind the scenes and i'm

In that case, I'm just listening to the trainer and she'll tell me what to do.

All right.

And finally, taking a look at your matchup this week.

The Gladstone Braves are coming into town.

They're currently sitting at one and five this season.

But I mean, you've run into them quite a bit as an assistant coach here.

Over the course of your history here in Houghton, what have you come to expect from the Braves?

And what are you hoping to do well in this matchup against Gladstone?

So what I would assume we're going to get from the Gladstone is

They're going to have bigger players, they're going to be strong, and they're going to run right at us.

And they'll run, run, run, run, run, and then hope to get you on a pass.

From all the film I watched, that's pretty much their MO right there.

It's snap the ball to the quarterback, running back player, and it's just run it right up the middle.

run it off to the side.

That's pretty much their offense.

And I would expect more of that.

We just need to match that with aggression and we need to hit.

Yes, absolutely.

Thank you for having me come join you

So starting off your one and five so far this season last week you came off a tough loss to Menominee They're a very great team of course and you've hit some of the tougher teams across the Westpac in these past few weeks So I just wanted to ask you one of you learned that you need to develop

for this Gladstone team over the past few weeks and what are you trying to implement in practice getting into the back half of your season here?

I think it's a lot of it's just health.

We're getting some guys back.

The first half of the season, you know, we lost eight guys, two were captains, you know, and seven of those guys were starters.

So, you know, you come all the way through two days, right?

You're working the reps, you're coming out, and then, you know, you slowly, every game, it's a couple key guys that you're losing.

And, you know, so we had had some backup guys that stepped up.

We had some guys that joined the team that were not

there at the beginning of the season that came out to play and so we're just we're just building off of that.

This is your first full season as the Braves head coach.

Craig Ness was the head coach previously.

I just wanted to ask you, what's helped you as you step up into the head coaching role for Gladstone?

Have there been any coaches that have been a big help to you?

Any players that you've been impressed by their leadership quality over the course of the season?

Yeah, I've got some friends that are some mentors and, you know, I've been around Gladstone for a while.

I was with the JV and it moved up.

So it's not like I haven't been around the organization and whatnot.

But yes, lots of support community, the school.

you know, other coaches and so the list goes on and on.

You know, you can't do this alone, right?

It takes the community and been extremely grateful for that opportunity.

And taking a look at your roster today, are there any key players that you want to mention that we should keep an eye out for in today's game?

Maybe some players who are recently coming back from injury or players that you're hoping will have a big impact.

I think it's still the same group, you know, writer of Forverley.

He's back, you know, suffered the knee injury at Nagani.

He's back in there in her middle linebacker captain on her defense, you know, and makes the defensive calls.

So it's a joy to have him back out in the field and his leadership and, you know, Wyatt Forverley and, you know, the list goes on.

We have Barry and Aiden in our quarterbacks.

So we've got a bunch of guys.

We've just got to get the ball in their hands and turn them loose a little bit.

And

finally, the Houghton Gray ones are also one in five entering this game.

What have you learned to expect from this Houghton team over the past few seasons as you get ready for this big matchup?

Well, I think it's new leadership.

They're in the same boat.

I know the head coach and I know him well.

And he's a great guy.

And so I think it's just like anything else.

It's a different culture.

You're blending in different coaches and getting to know each other and work with each other and problem solve.

And again, I think they've

kind of been in the same boat, some injuries, right?

And it shuffles you pretty quick when you don't have 50 guys on your roster.

So I think they bring a lot of great things, and our guys need to be ready tonight, because I think we're going to see the best of Houghton tonight here.

We just wrapped up our Superior Service Toeing Coaches interview, so now it's time for our featured players of the game brought to you by Q&A Automotive.

We're going to start first with visiting Gladstone Braves, and you heard Coach Dennis Canute talk about it in the pregame interview.

Ryder Fourvilli, their defensive captain, has just come back from injury.

He usually plays Mike Linebacker, and he's a fullback on their offensive side of the ball as well.

a key player like that that's a core piece of your defense.

Definitely going to be a central thing to keep your eye on in today's game as we assess Gladstone's defensive capabilities against the Gremlins and shifting over to the hometown team here in Houghton.

We had two players go down, we briefly mentioned that while talking with Coach Eli Loma, but two players on the offensive and defensive line, Bryson, Nettle and Mason Joyle, both out due to leg injuries, sustained in the game against Calumet, they're both on the field, one of them actually being honored for a senior day celebration pre-game here, but both players in three clothes, they're not suited up in today's game, so...

That means the rest of the offensive line and the defensive line is going to need to show up to play today.

And they're led by team captain junior Daniel Suh wearing number 61 out there for the Gremlins.

Other players you'll probably hear a couple times tonight.

Chad Halledon, Everett Madison, Keaton Roberts, Abbott Alcock, all players who will be playing

and getting likely significant reps on both sides of the ball tonight as the line for the Gremlins is a bit shorter, and we'll see if they can hold for quarterback Brody Donnelly as he tries to lead the Gremlins to their second win of the season.

is moving well so far for the Gremlins.

It really has been a story of small mistakes for Houghton, at least in the games that we've covered against Hishbeming Westwood, who came here a few weeks ago, and the Calumet Copper Kings last week.

You heard Coach Eli Loma talk about it in the pre-game interview.

Two onside kicks.

I don't even know if they were intentional onside, but it was a squib kick that hit one of the Gremlins hands team players.

and bounce back to around the Calumet line gave the Copper Kings two free possessions.

Donnelly shotgun steps back looking to throw, he'll throw over to the right hand side of the field and that ball is caught by Terry Nolan who will have enough of the first down.

First time airing it out today and Terry Nolan a player we haven't seen too much in our weeks covering the Gremlins able to make the first reception of the game.

We're still scoreless with the Gremlins moving towards the end zone.

And the Braves keep the Gremlins out of the end zone on the first drive of the game.

It looked like the offensive line protection was going to hold for a moment, but as Donnelly cut up on the quarterback keeper, all of a sudden blocks were shed.

It was senior day today for the Gremlins.

A quick ceremony held in midfield before the game.

Pepin under center, three backs behind him, takes the snap, hands it off to Wyatt Forveley.

Wyatt cuts to the left.

Wyatt Forveley breaks free, down to the 30, the 20, and finally brought down.

Alex Abarian on the tackle.

As Forveley gets to inside the Gremlin Red Zone, tackled at about the 19 yard line.

Another big gain out of the backfield for Gladstone.

Forverley able to finally break to the outside found some headroom.

Alex Abert weren't the only players on the field who could have chased him down.

Pepin under center takes the snap hands off to Wyatt Forverley once again.

He'll be brought down at the line this time after gaining maybe a yard.
