Bringing you this week in Huskies Athletics.

Yeah!

Here we are another edition of this weekend Huskies athletics.

I am your host Sam Sears right here on mix 93 and the uber.

It was a great weekend for tech sports hockey got its start and we saw plenty of victories.

Michigan Tech volleyball saw a weekend sweep winning three to nothing against Lake Superior State on Friday and another three to nothing win over Purdue Northwest on Saturday.

Michigan Tech football started off at Gliac strong with a 57 to 28 win.

back on Saturday.

And after the Friday game had the sadly be cancelled, Michigan Tech hockey managed to sweep its weekend with a 3-2 victory over number 14 Minnesota on Saturday and a 3-1 victory over Minnesota on Sunday.

Now for this weekend in tech sports, tomorrow soccer faces off against Roosevelt at 6, Williams Volleyball plays at Parkside beginning at 7.

At closing out Friday, it's Tech Hockey at St.

Claude State, beginning at 8.

Saturday, women's tennis is at Grand Valley State.

And while tennis is at Grand Valley State, the football team hosts Grand Valley State at Curly Stadium.

That match will begin at 12.

Volleyball plays at Purdue Northwest at 3.

Then Hockey ramps up Saturday with another match at St.

Claude State at 7.

And then this Sunday, Sucker plays against Purdue Northwest at home at Curly Stadium at 12.

All right, with that behind us, let's get on over to our press conferences.

All the usual coaches spoke this week.

So let's start things off with football coach, Dan Metlak.

First, Dan Metlak talks about how it feels to win his first GLIAC match of the season against Roosevelt.

That was good.

I felt like that was probably the closest we played to a complete game for four quarters.

since probably week two.

So it was good to see from that standpoint.

Thought we played really well defensively.

Did a lot of good things offensively, but there's still some stuff that needs to get cleaned up that we're working on and guys are aware of.

So going into this week, we've got some stuff that we're conscious of on both sides of football, special teams, and so on.

But overall, I thought to go on the road, the guys handled the travel well last week.

started fast obviously got to pick on the first play and then you know to take a 14 nothing lead and go from there I thought that was good.

He was then asked about coming off the bye week and how he liked the start of the match.

I mean obviously Dakota makes it a great play on the football in the first play and you know obviously they tried to take a vertical shot and but we get the ball at midfield and and then you know on first down

Go for plus 30 or whatever it was to get the drive started and obviously finish it in the end zone Was a good thing to see getting off the bus especially after being off for two weeks So you never know how that's gonna go when the guys get that long off But mentally I thought the guys were in a good spot with the way we traveled and you know how we handled the trip the walkthrough the night before mentality at team breakfast the next day and so on the guys were ready to play which was good You knew obviously no

going in and seeing a 4-0 team that they had enough talent that our guys weren't overlooking anybody by any means, but I thought our execution was good.

Again, getting back to what we did defensively should have been probably a shutout at halftime.

Give them two short fields, one with the bad turnover, and then myself making a terrible decision on our own end on the fourth down and not making it.

So put our guys in a bad spot twice, but that was their only points they had.

in the first half.

And going in at halftime staff, the guys all felt like we were in a good spot.

Needed to start fast in the second half, which I think on that first drive of the second half, we had three penalties offensively to hold ourselves back at that point.

But we're able to get the field flip.

So overall, I thought it was good.

Again, like you're saying, you come out of a bye week.

You're not ever sure how that's going to.

go, but got off the bus and played well right from the start.

And lastly, he's asked about this Saturday and about Grand Valley State.

Kellan's very good.

Has been in our league for a long time.

Obviously, he's a focal point of their offense.

So same way we're talking about Abe and Nora up here, same thing for them down there with him.

And they find multiple ways to get him the football as well.

And, you know, he's not going to go very long without getting a touch, whether that be in the pass game or reverse or something.

Obviously, very dynamic in the return game as well.

So very aware of

But they've got other guys that are capable as well and dynamic out in space.

And they're not a whole lot different than they've been in the past.

Athletic, big in the box, defensively, very aggressive in the back end with their secondary.

And then they're going to find a way to stretch us vertically and laterally with their pass game.

of course right when they can get you spaced out they've got tailbacks that are capable of hurting you as well so gonna have to be gap sound good with our eyes in the back end and and obviously be able to extend and convert on some drives offensively to make sure that it's not a lopsided game from that standpoint so execution is gonna be a big thing for us obviously

We know what the talent is coming in here.

And we're going to have to have another performance like we did last week where we're able to put points on the scoreboard and kind of match what they're doing offensively.

And we'll see how it goes.

So our guys are excited for it.

We love having them up here.

And hopefully.

we can get out of bed and show up.

And that was the press conference with Michigan Tech football coach Dan Metlak.

Now heading over to tech sucker coach Melissa Cujar at her press conference, coach Cujar was first asked about Sunday's game against Northern Michigan.

Yeah, no, yeah, the first, yeah, say 25 minutes, we dominate possession, we created things in the attack.

Yeah, it's just trying to bottle that and replicate it for the full 90.

You know, it's the two dagger of goals that Northern scored in those 38 seconds, crushed kind of that momentum we had.

But no, I mean, it's just we have to try to bottle up just that, right, that 25 minutes.

And we've had glimpses of that all year.

It's just now putting it all together.

And that's kind of been the struggle is putting that 90 minutes together.

She was then asked to give an update on Bree Barrow's and how she's doing.

For what happened, she's doing good.

I haven't seen her in person.

Just some pictures and it's a gnarly, gnarly black eye and a big cut.

But no, I mean, she should hopefully be able to get back into practice midweek.

We're kind of being a little cautious with it just when you get that many stitches in your head.

And and yeah, just trying to play it kind of safe and get her back in.

But yeah, I mean, for for the hit she took, she she's pretty pretty strong head is what is what I'll say.

And lastly, coach Kuhar was asked about this weekend's home games against Roosevelt and Purdue North.

Yeah,

no, it will be a nice thing to not be back on the road again.

I felt like all of September, that's where we were.

No, we play a Roosevelt team again, where we tied them earlier in the year.

We arguably dominated them in shots and everything.

They have a few players that they got back from injury, and we're kind of some bumps and bruises, but that should be a good game.

It should be a very winnable game for us.

And then we bring in Purdue Northwest that we haven't seen this year.

results kind of both ways so it's that'll be an interesting one but again I think it's we've we've hung with every team in this conference in our conference so far and it's like why not this weekend can we can we pull out some results get some goals and and yeah well we'll see I mean it's we're gonna get to have to get some people healthy but I think we'll be good we have some depth

so.

And that was the press conference of Michigan Tech's soccer coach Melissa Kuhar.

There's war to come but let's take a quick break.

This weekend Huskies Athletics is powered by Michigan Tech Huskies.com

The Radio Voice of the Huskies, MIX 93 WKMJ brings you hockey and football this weekend.

Starting Friday night as the nationally ranked Michigan Tech hockey team travels to St.

Cloud State with coverage starting at 7.30, then Saturday.

The Football Huskies host Grand Valley stayed at noon, followed by more hockey from St.

Cloud at 6.30.

Michigan Tech hockey and football this Friday and Saturday, only on The Voice of the Huskies, MIX 93 WKMJ, and streamed live on the Civic Media app.

He's trying to hold it in, does for a moment, needs a little bit of help.

Got it from Van Blericombe.

And Michigan Tech will keep it in the zone for the time being.

Pass to the middle, here it is, shot, scores!

Matthew, Matthew, scores!

With the goal, gives the Huskies a 1-0 lead.

Dumped all the way down, Rur will pick it up now and sends it behind the net to his defensive partner, Lockwood.

Big hit down there, loose puck in the slot.

Picked up in the Huskies, here's Johnson with the score!

Huskies will pick up the loose box, sent up ice.

Michigan Tech will send it down.

Evan Merck's gonna have to hustle back for the Minnesota Golden Glovers.

He's swinging around.

Huskies picking up.

Here's Berger!

Over!

Starrk!

Down there!

Starrk!

What a pass by Berger!

The Huskies pick up very too late!

Michigan Tech desperate for a whistle.

Aura cleared.

The Gophers put it on the pressure.

Back to the...

and it picked up by Miller.

Miller's got a lead to the net, and the numbers shot the goal in the first round, number 29, and a great feed by Miller.

And the Huskies for the second straight night, score first, one no win.

Roulette to the middle, back to the point, Huskies trying to settle in here.

Miller for Roulette, down low, pass to the front, shot!

2-1 lead for Michigan Tech.

A minute 23 left to go.

Empty dead opportunity here for Vandlerica.

Makes a move!

Vandlerica comes in, shoots!

Scores!

Yeah, shoot!

Vandlerica!

Oh!

Put the design remaining!

Put the Huskies up by 2.

Base off.

Deep in the zone, shot taken by the Colfers.

And that'll do it.

The Huskies.

Two games sweep against Minnesota on a Saturday Sunday series.

Write a book about this at least the last three days.

Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

It certainly was an exciting weekend for the Hockey Huskies.

With Friday's cancellation and the sweep thereafter for the Hockey Huskies, the weekend certainly ended up being an interesting one.

Of course, the best person to hear from about all this is the coach of the Hockey Huskies himself, Bill McCold.

Well, it started off a little rocky on Friday, but a huge shout out to our leadership group and everybody at the Mac for getting the...

the ice back to, you know, the conditions it needed to be.

But huge weekend for our team.

You know, anytime you can sweep and call it hockey, it's huge.

You know, Minnesota's, you know, they're very well coached team.

You know, they're going to win a lot of hockey games.

I was really proud of our group of finding a way to come out on top both nights.

What does it mean that you're able to do that without the services of Isaac Gordon?

Well, it's the next man up mentality, you know, they had a couple players out as well with with Mooney You know the games played and injuries part of the game, but proud of our group collectively up and down the lineup a lot of bright spots

Obviously Matthew Van Blericom huge weekend for you gets offensive player of the week all of those things How exciting is it to see a kid like him step up when given that moment?

Well, he's had a tremendous growth in his game.

He's physically stronger.

He looks faster.

He's more confident.

He's a different player than he was last year.

You know, and to expand on that a little bit further, I just thought Tom Lappah, Carson, Bernie, that line, not just checking the top players on Minnesota, but also creating offense.

They're just so tenacious there.

They're a pack of dogs.

They get along so well.

They have chemistry.

They play so hard.

They play the way we're asking them to.

They play the right way.

They don't cheat.

They're on top of it.

And they just play a heavy game.

The coach was then asked if there was anybody on the team who impressed him.

Yeah, there was just a lot of bright spots when you have success.

I thought that this wasn't like a traditional opening weekend.

Like just the pace of both teams, the quality of play and how hard it was, how fast it was.

But up and down the lineup, I mean, Olmbardis gave it.

You can start there.

It was rock solid.

Any time team defense, you give up three goals on a weekend, you're going to have a really good chance to do that.

And so you look at our back end, I thought Lucas Brinton was a monster for us out there.

He killed plays.

Luca Fasciano, Tyler Miller made a great play.

to Conor Roulette on his first goal.

I thought Luke Shipley had a great weekend.

Caleb Parker was fantastic.

Rita Andreessen was just steady, 80 solid, just keeps getting better and better.

So that whole decor.

All six of those guys were fantastic for us.

And then, like I said, up front, I thought Eli Janssen had a great weekend.

He made a huge play at the end of the game.

To spring, Matty Van Blaircom, he also scored a big goal on the first night.

But he did a lot of good things when you review the tape.

So there were a lot of bright spots.

I thought Max Koska priority was great.

And then we got a big goal out of Trembachy at their big play-by.

Noah Reinhardt, who I thought had a great weekend and it, you know, it finally paid off for them.

Bill McCold was that asked about the shift to Sunday and if it messed with his schedule?

Well, no question.

It's, it's changed it.

I mean, I can't believe how tired I felt Monday morning going, going to work, but we did a lot of video yesterday individually.

and team teaching gave the guys a day off.

So it's a shortened week.

We'll go hard here Tuesday, Wednesday, practice Thursday morning and then travel.

So a little bit of a shorter week, but that's not an issue.

Our job is to prepare and then perform.

And lastly, he talks about this weekend's games and about St.

Cloud.

Well, a new coach.

probably, you know, tweak some systems.

You know, watch the game already against Bemidji, Bemidji won 3-2 in overtime, but it was a tight contested game.

You know, so I think they're still working on establishing, but I know how it's their home opener, it's their weekend, how...

excited their fans are going to be in their team to get off you know on that foot so we're going to have our hands full and it's all about how hard we have to play and that we have to you know we know how hard a college hockey is and we've been through it last year and that's certainly the message of how much we have to respect them and respect the game and that we're going to have to

bring that intensity and effort and then execution and play our brand and play to our identity and our style and stay with that because that's that's how we're going to ultimately have success as a group.

And that was from the press conference of the Michigan Tech hockey coach, Bill McColt.

And now last but certainly not least, Michigan Tech volleyball coach, Cindy Pendrell, her team had a great weekend and she starts us off by giving her thoughts on it.

Very happy with our performance at home.

Like we said before the weekend coming into it, that is.

it's a really good opportunity for us to move ahead in the standings a little bit and kind of take care of business against some teams that have been struggling in the league.

So I'm really proud of our team for stepping up to the plate and delivering on what our goals were.

Coach Pindrell was that as how she hopes her team looks a month from now at the end of the regular season.

So one of our main goals going into this season, and that should be the way every season is to be peaking towards the end of season.

So I still feel like we are figuring out a couple of kinks in our lineup, not necessarily like who, but like who goes where in certain spots.

You know, in a couple of rotations, is it better if we have this combination of passers?

Um, or in this rotation, is it better if we, you know, shift a little bit to the left to start with like little things like that?

I still feel like we're ironing out a couple of things based on people's strengths and tendencies and statistics over time.

Um, so yeah, probably in the next week or so, we'll have a little bit more security in the way that we're playing.

And then that's just going to help us in the long run, um, as we play, um, more teams in our league.

And then we have no idea who we're going to play at the crossover, but it's really important that you're secure in your own skin, um, especially going into the crossover.

There's, there's a lot of uncertainties.

And then we were saying, Oh, this'll be great.

You'll break away with being too known.

And then every, that same four teams is still nodded up in that same spot in the conference heading into this weekend.

What can you tell us about your opponents?

Yeah, that's okay.

That means that we are battling hard with the right people and we're taking care of business against the right people too.

Um, you know, I think the teams that we're tied with are all very quality opponents and I'm happy to have split with Davenport and, uh, we don't play Saginaw again, unless it's the playoff.

So I'm happy to have that one.

And we still have another.

their enchants in a couple of weeks, which were very much ready for that one.

Um, so yeah, I think it's, it's shows that, you know, the, the strength of schedule is there and that we're battling against the right teams, that we're rising to the occasion when needed.

Um, so yeah, I think all the teams are doing what they should be doing at this point.

And then Parkside again.

Parkside for the first time pretty Northwestern.

Again, just tell us about those matches.

Yeah, Parkside for the first time.

It seems so late in the season to be playing a team for the first time.

Just the schedule is odd this year.

But yeah, Parkside went on a tear in the early part of the season.

They played very well at some very tough non-conference tournaments to start the season.

And they were on a hot streak.

And then they've, I think, struggled a little bit the last two matches.

But it's not for playing poorly or anything like that.

I'm not really sure what's going on there.

I'm not in that gym.

Um, but yeah, it's just another opportunity for us to, you know, play well and, you know, potentially put us in a situation where we can get some quality wins.

Um, it's always harder to play on the road.

Um, so, you know, we really have to match up well against Purdue again, uh, with serving tough.

It's hard to play in their gym for whatever reason.

Um, and then Parkside is tough as well.

Their gyms a little bit darker.

Um, and yeah, they just.

have an interesting gym atmosphere.

But Parkside is very well coached.

I really respect their program.

So yeah, it should be a quality, a very tough weekend for us.

And again, that was Michigan Tech volleyball coach, Cindy Pendrell.

Again, lots of exciting games this weekend for Michigan Tech, and specifically what we'll be broadcasting on our stations, Mix 93 and the Uber.
