Well, Bill, Major League Baseball Playoffs start today on Tuesday.

We'll go over the series and the match-ups and pick the winners.

First off, Bill, today at 2 o'clock at NBC, the fighting fills.

I always like Philadelphia.

Back to Mike Schmidt, the bold moves in.

These are best two out of three.

All games will be at the home team.

Philadelphia, Atlanta, best two to three wild card series.

Game one today, two o'clock in NBC.

Who do you like, Professor?

I

guess Atlanta.

Philadelphia just snuck in, but boy, when you play the best two out of, best of three, boy, your pitching can be good and got a lot of luck.

But I figured maybe Atlanta, they're playing at home.

And I like Philadelphia overall, but Atlanta's pitching's a little bit deeper.

They got to rest out to set up.

Philadelphia had to win Sunday just to get in, just inching out Arizona for that last wildcard spot.

The Cubs have 89 wins, the Padres 70, the Padres 91.

I like San Diego and their bullpen.

The Cubs' bullpen, Bill, is their Achilles' seal.

And I think they might really get exposed up playing out in San Diego.

Who do you like in that one?

I'm San Diego.

The home team seems to have the advantage on these best of three series.

So I'm going to go with San Diego.

And keep in mind, as you mentioned, these are like regular baseball series.

all these games will be at the home team and again tonight eight o'clock in mbc where my attention is going to be i'd like to watch that cup pod rig game bill and not collide with myself that's too late for me plus they have an unexpected appointment in green bay wednesday so that won't happen eight o'clock mbc tonight the boston at the Yankees wow i'm a red sock fan i think they overcheap way beyond anyone thought they would Yankees are set up with their pitching with coal and the schindler on the top

who do you like in the boston yankee series bill uh... again these two teams are back forever and then some

i think they could go with home team boy it's going to be exciting series anytime boston yankees play it's uh... it's close and uh... by the way like the Yankees uh... playing at home

well bill i'm gonna go with the red sox uh... not just because i like him i think they have a little bit more offense but yeah this could go you could flip a coin with this one

So basically, we both are taking Atlanta, Houston, and the Padres.

The only difference we have is you're taking the Yankees and me taking the Red Sox, correct?

So, uh, we'll see what happens.

Uh, the, um, the games, uh, and the next series started, the division series starts on Saturday.

So it's all gonna be over by Wednesday.

It's a Tuesday.

Tonight, Wednesday and Thursday is the, is the wildcard game.

So it's, uh, we'll know, uh, by the weekend who, who has made it, Jimmy.

Well, Bill, like you see it, huh?

lucky to puck bounce is a funny way in baseball you get a good record and we're going to tie these two together with your story to our topic athletes who uh... were a option to go to mazley baseball or the n-h-l we all know tom glavin that phenomenal hall of fame pitcher for the braves he was drafted by the ellie king's if i remember right going way back when but you found another athlete and there's probably half of them you know about that had a choice i remember kyler murray uh...

current quarterback for the Vikings, drafted by Arizona at first couple years in the NFL.

He could have been a top 10 pick in baseball, but there's a half of them ago that have had to make that choice and tell us about a few of them.

You know, athletes are good athletes that typically excel in several sports and came across the story about a couple of major league baseballs who were drafted by both the major league baseball teams and the NHL.

So it's kind of a

to make a decision we go pro baseball or pro hockey and uh there's you know several that are been um uh good hockey players and baseball players and you mentioned uh football players and baseball players but I picked out just a couple here that uh Tom Glavin and Kurt McCaskill uh they chose baseball instead of hockey they were both drafted um by the um major league team major league baseball team and the NHL and uh both ended up choosing baseball instead of hockey and ended up to be pretty successful

One is in the Baseball Hall of Fame and the other one is in the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame.

The Tom Glavin was born in Concord, Massachusetts in 1966, and you mentioned him early.

He was raised in Bellarant, Massachusetts, the suburb of Boston, and he attended high school there, and he played both hockey and baseball.

In his senior year, he had, in 23 games, he had 47 goals and 47 assists.

He was named, naturally, the conference MVP.

He was the center on the team, but he also played

baseball picture at the high school and they won the state championship.

He graduated in 1984.

He was actually being recruited as a senior by Boston College and Boston University for hockey and Oklahoma State and Miami for baseball, a couple of top college baseball teams.

So he actually signed a letter of intent

with the University of Lowell, and now it's the University of Massachusetts Lowell, because he wanted to stay close to home, and he planned to play both hockey and baseball.

But less than a month after committing to Lowell, he was drafted by the Atlanta Braves in the second round of the 1984 Major League Baseball Draft.

And then a couple weeks later, the L.I.

Kings drafted him in the fourth round, the 69th pick overall, in the 84th entry-level draft.

Kind of interesting, that year,

was the number one deck, but Gavin was selected for Brent Hall and Luke Robletie.

A little bit of trivia for that draft.

The last deck that year was a fellow named Troy Crosby.

He's the father of Sidney Crosby.

And so Glavin signed with the Braves that summer.

He didn't go to Lowell.

He pitched in the farm system for a few years, and he made his Major League debut in August of 87.

He played 22 seasons in Major League Baseball.

Most of it was with the Atlanta Braves.

He had five times 20 game winner, two times side young Lord winner.

He won 305 games.

a ten-time All-Star, and he was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2014.

The first year of eligibility, he was on 90% of the votes cast, and he kind of had the fun thing.

The brave teammates called him Gretzky, and he now lives in Georgia.

He coaches his Kentucky team, so that's what he's doing in retirement.

The other player was actually born in Canada in 1961.

Kirk McCaskill is dead.

who was playing for a local team at the time, but McCaskill moved several times because his dad played and eventually played in the World Hockey Association.

While he retired from hockey in 1975, the family settled in Arizona.

And so Kurt played hockey and baseball and soccer.

He started high school in California and actually transferred in his sophomore year to a private school in New York state.

So he could pursue kind of hockey, kind of what those kind of hockey private schools that kind of an academy that did a lot of hockey.

But he continued to play baseball and soccer.

In his senior year, he

He, uh, as a right-handed pitcher, he was, uh, 8-0 in baseball.

He, he had 26 goals, 22 assists, and 17 games, uh, in a soccer, uh, on his hockey team.

He turned down a baseball scholarship to Arizona State, and he accepted a scholarship at the University of Vermont, so he could play hockey and baseball.

He, uh, he played center and right wing for Vermont for four seasons.

He was drafted by the Winnipeg Jets in 1981.

fourth round, the 64th overall pick that year.

The number one selection that year was Derrick Dale Howard-Chuck.

He was selected by the Winnipeg Jets.

And the 1981-82 season, when Kurt was at in Vermont, this was his junior year.

He was on the conference's first team All-Star, and he was actually a Hobie Baker finalist.

June 82, he was drafted by the California Angels in the fourth round.

a minor league baseball and so he retained his amateur status so he could play in Vermont in his senior year.

He didn't have as great a senior year in hockey but in 1983 he played minor league baseball again and then attended the Jets training camp.

He played one season for their top American League hockey team in Sherbrooke and he dressed for one game but they went to play Jets but he didn't play and he retired.

He focused on baseball.

He signed with the Angels.

He started with 85.

He played 11 seasons in Major League Baseball.

Much was with the eight Los Angeles Angels, the California Angels, and he played a few years with the Chicago White Sox.

His record, he ended up with a record of 106 wins and 108 losses, over 1,000 strikeouts.

He ended his career as a reliever, but he was inducted into the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame in 2003.

He retired and now lives in California, and he coaches high school baseball.

So there's two guys that had that choice between baseball or hockey.

They both chose baseball and it ended up being a fairly successful career.

So it's kind of an interesting story.

There's a few others that had a good high school or junior hockey careers, but were undrafted by NHL teams or a good baseball career in high school, but were undrafted by major league baseball.

So there's a few of those around too, Jimmy.

They're in Hall of Fame, so it's kind of a fun story that they made the choice.

It was money at the time, and I think it ended up to be a good decision for them.

So there's a gem for today, Jimmy.

Well, Bill, a couple of questions for you.

We're going to talk about two and a half minutes here.

You mentioned McCaskill and, obviously, Gladman, both phenomenal pitchers.

But you mentioned Cindy Crosby's dad.

What was that part about

him?

His dad was the last pick in the 1980s.

for NHL entry-level graph.

So that's going to be a good trivia question.

The first pick that year was Maria Lemieux.

The very last pick in that graph was Troy Crosby, the father of the Kidney Crosby Show.

It kind of interesting because Maria Lemieux was the number one pick of Pittsburgh.

Well, everybody knows Sidney Cragby was the number one pick years later, but he's dead.

I forget who picked him.

I think the Montreal Canadiens picked him that year, but anyway, he never made it to the NHL, but his son seems to have had a good career, so kind of good for the question for that year.

No doubt about it, especially way back then, yeah.

The last pick usually went to

modry all of the uh... or the islanders remit and those three teams probably won twelve or thirteen Stanley cups in a fifteen sixteen year window well bill great information again we appreciate it and uh... can't wait to see what you have up here at a good uh... about your sleep for next week

As young as the coach of the Ithaca volleyball team, I spoke with her this week about the team and how it's going this season.

I think our team is actually starting to build.

We had a rough start to the season.

Things were circumstances out of our control, but things were real challenging for a while.

And I really feel like the girls are starting to build some momentum.

here as we go on in this season.

We just were at Scholesburg on Saturday at a tournament there, and I was really pleased with how the girls performed there.

We were the only D5 school in that tournament, and they played really well.

So I'm hoping we can continue to build on that, and we have three home games this week, so I'm really hoping it'll be a great week for us.

Right, you have a lot of things to play, and a lot of things to play for here as you get down towards seeding, which right now is not that far away, is it?

No, no, it's really crazy because a week ago I would have said we were, you know, not even a fourth of the way through our season.

And then, you know, when you think about it in a couple of weeks, the regular season will be done.

So that is kind of the craziness of volleyball season.

It's a lot of games, really short season.

And yeah, we'll be stepping into those seedings before we know it here.

Who is winning the Regent Valley Conference so far this year?

right now Seneca and DeSoto are both undefeated at this time so it'll be interesting to see I believe they see each other this week so it'll be interesting to see which one of them comes out on top but yeah those would be the two top contenders in the conference right now.

Who are the

leaders for the Bulldogs this year Angie?

Well I

I have to say our seniors, I have five seniors this year and they've just done a phenomenal job this season.

It's been a real challenging season for us.

A lot of things that you just can't predict having to deal with in a season and our seniors have just really stepped up and been the glue for our teams, for our varsity and JV team and just really our program this year in the high school level.

I think that's Keeley Manning, Nyla Lorenzo, Aubrey Imhaf, JC Maxwell, and Brinley Wanlos.

And I just cannot say enough good things about them.

They have really worked hard and they show up and they put in the work and they've just been great role models for everyone.

So I definitely think our seniors have just done a great job of helping to carry the team through some very difficult days this

season.

I spoke earlier this week with Angie Young about tonight's opponent, LaFarge.

We did see LaFarge at a quad a couple weeks ago and we did beat them.

They did get one set from us.

We were having some struggles that night, but

I'm really hoping it'll be a felony.

I've honestly been pretty impressed with the fars this season.

I think this is the strongest of the fars team I've seen them have in several years.

So they're very scrappy.

They are not afraid to attack the ball.

So you have to be on your toes, playing them and just be ready for it.

They've definitely improved greatly since the past two seasons.

What are some things that bulldogs need to improve upon here as you get down the stretch?

I think just really continuing to build that momentum and really, really pushing themselves now.

We're getting to a very good spot right now.

Just not holding back and attacking that ball.

We have some very strong players.

And just that consistency and really being able to attack our defense has been doing a great job this weekend.

Our defense had a really good day at the tournament on Saturday.

against some very strong hitting teams.

So that was wonderful.

And I think just to really continue to fail at this point to build upon that.

And hopefully when we kind of head into the second half of our season here, we can see some improvement and get some more wins on our record.

And in terms of younger groups and numbers, how does the program look this year?

We look pretty stable.

We, you know, losing five seniors is never ideal for a small school like ours.

But we will bring in, right now we have some decent middle school numbers.

So our numbers should continue to maintain where they're at.

We don't have huge numbers, of course.

But I will continue to maintain a varsity and a JV team.

And I'm really hoping that as time goes on here, we can continue to build some interest in some of our younger

girls in the elementary school and really start getting them more connected to the volleyball program earlier.

Welcome to tonight's broadcast in the Ridge and Valley matchup between the Ithaca Bulldogs and LeFarge Wildcats.

LeFarge comes in with a record of 1 and 7 under Allison Benson's leadership and coach now for her 15th season for LeFarge.

And Angie Young head coach from Ithaca and in her fourth year of coaching the Bulldogs.

Having had some success

Winning the conference title for the first year ever, back in 2024, and making it to the sectional semi-final.

Since that time, the team has played pretty well last year, but lost lots of graduation the previous year.

This year, as mentioned, they've struggled a little bit, but trying to get back on the winning track, they had a three sets to two loss to Kickapoo last night, so a very tough one in a makeup match.

For the Farge, they have not played since last week, so well rested coming into the match tonight.

And we shall see if that is any factor or there's anything to do with that here tonight.

And in terms of the JV match, you have like a one, three sets to none in the early meeting of this evening.
