Lakeland and Hubble still ranked the number one 8 on 8 team in the U.P.

Powers North Central for the moment unranked but with their 3-in-1 record and their glowing history of success at both divisions of the 8 on 8 football.

It ought to be a fantastic game from both teams today.

Lakeland and Hubble Lakes dispatched the Norway Knights here last week by a final score of 60 to 32.

A 28 point victory against the Knights who at the time were ranked the number two team in UP football.

So at the moment Lakeland and Hubble, firmly cementing themselves in that number one spot, we'll see if they can keep their perfect record and remain one of the two undefeated eight on eight teams in the UP.

For the moment, Pickford, the only other school with a perfect record, they're currently ranked number two in those overall rankings.

Yeah Starting off last week.

We were able to cover your game against Norway a 60 to 32 final score You keep your undefeated record How does it feel to see your players step up and perform so well overall and a really big proof it game for them in this regular season?

Yeah, it feels really good.

You know, it's short-lived.

You don't want to feel too good about it for too long because the season rolls on, but I'm really happy with what we've had for guys stepping up in the face of a little bit of injury, but...

Yeah, Norway came out, their quarterback was obviously a little bit banged up, so he didn't play.

I thought that the kid that stepped in and played for him, he did well as the game went on, so he gave us a pretty decent look for their offensive sets, but I think that happened pretty late in the week for them, so they had to kind of adjust on the fly.

And that really was, I think, the big thing to address going into this week of practice.

It seemed like the defensive backfield got burnt over the top a couple of times in that game, otherwise, especially the front seven and the defense played exceptionally well.

Well, but how are you gonna try to tighten that up going into this matchup next week?

Yeah, we kind of figured with our defensive backs You know trying to replace Lucas Axford back there would be a task and we figured you know if we try to play it aggressively up front Then maybe we'll get to the quarterback and that's kind of what happened right off the bat And so we'll continue to try things like that given whatever we're gonna see week by week, but

I like the defensive backs we have moving forward.

We've got some kids that are hungry and they're willing to put the work in with the basics, right?

Getting a read step, getting your back pedal, playing a guy one-on-one.

If you're playing zone, how to exactly play that.

I like what we have and we have a little bit of experience coming back with it, too.

And last week, especially on offense, Brady Axford kind of stole the show for you guys.

Multiple rushing touchdowns had that kick return touchdown on the third quarter, but at least from the coach's perspective, were there any other players that you think stood out to you standing there on the sideline watching this team play?

Yeah, I mean, we played well at times.

I could almost name anybody that was out there.

But one thing that I see is, you know, Josh Davatel has been playing with a little bit of a banged up ankle.

And so you see him kind of hobbling around out there and just giving it his all.

I know at times he's not in the limelight like Brady has been.

But, you know, if he's healthy, he's right there.

And he's maybe the guy that's splitting those carries and getting more touchdowns.

So to see that he's not feeling great, but he's still willing to put the work in and really go out there for his team.

I think that's something to be noticed and something to be celebrated.

All right, and looking ahead to this week's matchup.

Bit of a mid-season gauntlet starting to form up for you here.

You have Powers North Central coming into Warner Field this weekend.

They're three-and-one so far.

They beat Municing 59-8 last week.

What have you learned to expect from the Jets as you get ready for this big week five matchup?

I couldn't tell you the last time that the Jets weren't good.

So if that tells you enough, you know, every year they're kind of setting the standard.

I've said that for a while now.

They've been ahead of the game, the eight-man game, for a long time.

And so it is kind of like playing catch up with them.

trying to see them as like the bar for division two at least

in a

man right so we played for division one teams this is the first time we're going to play a team that we could potentially and hopefully we we make the playoffs we could potentially see this team in the playoffs so there's things there that you know you might play eight quarters against them and you never know we did last year and luckily we were able to win both but

They're athletic.

They have kids that are hungry on that team.

The seniors now have seen a lot of success.

They know what goes into small town football just like we do.

So it's always an exciting matchup and one that our kids definitely, you know, they probably do circle it early in the year and say, hey, you know, North Central's coming to town.

We have to play well for that game.

Our second Superior Coaches interview this afternoon is with Powers North Central Jets head coach Leo Grzinski.

Coach, thank you so much for your time.

Well, yeah, thanks you.

So after a tough loss at Ishmengen Week 2, you've bounced back with back-to-back wins against Antonage and Immunising.

What do you think needed work in that Week 2 game against the Hematites?

And how has the team responded as you try to get back on your winning

I'd say winning routine in these past couple of weeks.

Well, it's just it's been with this team what we thought we're going to be when we started.

People forget that Miles Nair and Kate Malone were probably the only two players that had true game experience, right?

So it's not that they were a young team.

We just didn't have a lot of playing time with the guys that we had out there.

So, you know, obviously it's from a game was a wake up call and but now we're we're going on week five.

So they can't use that excuse anymore.

So they have to step up and play football.

And expanding on that a bit further, there is a new starting quarterback for you this season.

The senior quarterback last year, Ben Stage, has graduated.

So now it's two quarterbacks.

It's going to be Nathan Pipcourt and Caden Malone splitting time for you today.

What would you say has impressed you about those two quarterbacks so far in this season and watching them develop into that starting role?

Well, Jen, you just got to try to use their specific gifts, you know, what they're better at than the other one.

In combination, neither one of them are true drop-back quarterbacks.

So you have to kind of find the right sets that's going to work best for their ability and see which one can get the team moving.

And looking around the rest of the roster, I know you mentioned a lot of these players are getting their first significant playing time this season.

Have there been any other players that have emerged so far this year that have really impressed you?

Well, right now, Miles Nairian is probably playing the best football of any lineman I've seen.

And I'm not to take away from anybody else, but he's been geared up for this.

He has meant for this, and he's having a heck of a season.

We're glad to welcome Caden Dodson back.

He's just finally got cleared from a knee injury from last season.

So he's, again, hopefully, get the adrenaline past him, and hopefully he can be a big contributor for us today as well.

And finally, you

played the Lakeland at Humble Lakes twice last season.

The Lakes won both of those games, including in the first round of the post-season.

What are you hoping is going to be the difference maker for the Jets in this game as you try to bounce back after two losses to them last year?

Well, yeah.

I mean, we're playing a very good football team up here.

You know, Brett and the guys have done a great job with this program.

They've gotten better and stronger, seems to me, every single year.

So our boys need to know that they've got to pack a lunch and we'll tighten up their shoulder pads.

And let's go play some football.

High school football game of the week here on MIX 93.

Our coverage continuing during our pre-game show.

And it's time for our featured players of the game brought to you by Q&A Automotive.

First things first with the visiting powers were central jets.

The players to keep your eye on in this game are probably the two players who are going to be splitting reps at quarterback today.

Number seven, Nathan Pipcorn and number 12, Caden Malone, both entering their senior season.

They're taking over for starting quarterback for the Jets last season, Ben Stage.

I believe Malone mostly took reps at running back last season.

So stepping more into kind of a Wildcat quarterback role now.

We'll see how much he gets involved in the passing game.

I would expect Pipcorn if we're going to see more passing.

attempts generally.

We'll be the ones throwing the ball quite a bit more for Powers North Central.

Additionally, number 18, Kaden Dotson, was injured last year as Coach Grzinski mentioned in his coach's interview.

That sounds like he's just been cleared to play once again, so looking to see how number 18 can make an impact for this team, I believe he'll be taking reps to wide receiver for the...

the Jets in this matchup.

For the hometown, Lakeland and Hubble Lakes, the players you've got to focus on.

Like we've seen in the past couple of games, we've covered the lakes.

Number five, the captain, Brady Axford.

has been the heart of the Lakes offense.

Had a fantastic game last week.

I believe about 170 rushing yards total.

Three rushing touchdowns and a kick return touchdown in the game for him last week in that 60 to 32 victory over the visiting Norway Knights.

Additionally, Josh Davatella as coach Brett Gervais mentioned in his interview has been playing through an injury these past few weeks.

But it sounds like he's slowly getting his way fully back to 100 percent.

And he was a very impactful player for the Lakes despite those injuries last season.

So or earlier this season apologies.

So seeing how much of an impact he can be out of the backfield He's largely more of a blocking back lines up traditionally more of a full back position for the lakes We'll see how much he's able to get involved in the offensive side after being very impactful I believe recording both sacks in the matchup last week against the Knights our game day forecast brought to you by buckos party store and

For late September here in the Kiwanaw, it is absolutely blazing today right now in Lake Linden by pull up the exact temperature data at the moment.

It's currently 68 degrees but I would not expect it to stay near that for very long.

It's expected to heat up to about 70 degrees.

It feels like 76 right now.

based on my current forecast and looks like the actual real temperature will get up to around 70 as the game progresses.

I would expect the feels like temperature to be closer to 80 degrees probably by the time we're around half time in this game.

So a pretty hot game here for late September football.

We'll see how that impacts these players.

Hopefully they can stay limber out there.

We don't want to see any cramps or unnecessary injuries to any of these players.

Obviously that'd be something that both coaches and all the players on the field want to avoid by any means necessary.

Today features a Great Lakes 8 West Conference 8-man football matchup between the visiting North Central Jets and the hometown Lakeland and Hubble Lakes.

The Jets come into week 5 after a big win at home last week against Municing.

North Central now posts a 3-in-1 overall record and her 3-in-1 in conference play as well, having posted their other two victories over Antonagon and Gugiba.

The Jets are coached by head coach Leo Korzynski and assisted by Nick Tipcourt.

The Lakes are entering today's contest with an unblemished 4-0 record and are currently ranked first in the UP 8-man pole rankings and fourth in the state division 2 rankings.

The Lakes posted a big win at home last week against Norway.

The Lakes' other wins have been against Ishpeming, Norway and Ironwood and Munissi.

The lakes are coached by a head coach Brett Jarvis, assisted by Bo Dupy, Casey Crouch, Casey Krause, Cody Kampala, Danny Marcotte, and Isaac Davitello.

Number eight, Tyler Axford out as the kickoff specialist and he will squib kick it directly to one of the North Central Jets.

One of the front returners for the Powers Squad, Hunter Holly, able to cleanly recover the kick and the North Central Jets will begin their first drive near midfield.

we'll wait and see who is going to get the start formally at quarterback today for the Jets We're expecting either seven Nathan Pipcorn or 12 Kaden Malone And for the moment it looks like it will be Kaden Malone who was a running back for the Jets mainly last season

Let's see how they go in the passing game.

They initially show Ford receivers out wide, but they condense now to a single-back formation Malone alone in the backfield.

Takes a snap, runs to his right, Caden Malone gonna cut up field, able to get past the initial group of linemen, but brought down by Tyler Axford.

Gained him about five yards to start this game for the Jets.

Oh,

making a gain of about eight yards there actually.

Got a little bit further down the field than I initially

thought.

And on the first play of the game, the Jets trying to make an early impact.

Second down into the official distance to go.

Ball now on the Lake's 44 yard line, crossing midfield.

Alone again, again the only player in the backfield.

Offensive line is stacked to the left.

Malone in the shotgun, takes the snap, rolls out to his left.

Another design quarterback run, Josh Davatella trying to chase down Malone, and Caden Malone will finally be forced out of bounds by Tyler Axford, cutting him off, but more than enough to move the chains, now inside of the Lakes 30.

Two quarterback keepers to begin this game for the Powers North Central Jets, both pretty successful so far, gaining about eight yards on both plays.

Ball placed exactly on the 30, so actually a gain of about 12 on that run by Malone.

And again, he is the lone player in the backfield for the Jets.

Malone, shotgun takes the snap, rolling out to his right, looking to pass.

It's going to be a short pass that's bobbled and dropped.

Intended

target was number 21, that's Ty

Veezer.

The

sophomore tight end there not able to hold the ball.

A

little bit ahead of him on the throw.

That was the first attempt by Malone this game.

Just a short little dump off pass trying to gain about five yards.

Throwing that ball on the run a tricky situation especially knowing the likes of Josh Davatella is chasing you down in the

backfield.

Second down and ten, ball still up to 30 yards, line 11-08 left on the clock in this first quarter.

Malone again, the only player in the backfield takes a snap, and he bobbles it up to number two for the Jets.

That's Pryor-Libanti, and he will get out of bounds after a pretty big game, but I believe he's going to be short of the first down.

We'll wait for the official spot.

And most of the chain gang will stay in place.

It's going to be third down and

two.

Ball now with a 23 yard line so a long two yards to go for this first down.

Clock stopped at 11-02.

Labonte able to get out of bounds.

Malone again the only player in the backfield takes the snap rolls to his right.

Malone is gonna be brought down by Josh Davatella in the backfield a loss of yards and that'll make it fourth down in about five yards to

go.

I did

see a player taking reps kicking field goals for the Jets while they were getting their pregame warm-ups.

I believe it was a number three who I don't have on my roster.

But for the moment it looks like the offense is staying out on the field and an early fourth down conversion try coming on a fourth down and three ball at the 24 yard

line.

Jets have done a good job of moving the ball downfield so far, but a tackle for loss by Josh Davitella on third and short makes this a tough play.

Kate Malone stepping back looking to the end zone.

Deep ball caught by Powers North Central and that's a touchdown for number one, Riley Creighton.

And the first drive of the game for Powers North Central results in a touchdown from 24 yards out.

Nice way to start this game for the Jets.

Coming in as the underdog, a very rare occasion for this team.

And

a passing touchdown to open the game.

A penalty on the PAT before it can be kicked.

It looks like they're going for a one point try.

And it is a number three for the Powers North Central Jets who I unfortunately do not have on my roster.

Likely a junior varsity player coming in to get reps at kicker for the varsity squad.

The holders number 12, that's the quarterback, Caden Malone.

Oh, the snap is bobbled!

Malone has the scramble out of the pocket and he's brought down in the backfield by Josh Davatella.

Nice work there by number 40.

Big heads up play for Davidella.

And that will keep the score at six to nothing.
