Since we interviewed you back in week one, you've been off to a 3-0 start to the year.

You had a really good game against Ishming at Curly Stadium.

Since then, you've won 44-14 at Ironwood and 50-12 at Munising.

What do you attribute your recent team success to, whether it's particular players, your defensive and offensive scheming, what core components would you say have been defining your winning streak so far?

Yeah, I mean early in both games we've had to kind of figure things out.

We had a lot that changed against Ironwood with one of our running backs going down on literally the first play with a tweaked ankle.

And so everything suddenly changes and you have to adjust in an 8 man football.

It's tough to do that sometimes because you don't have a ton of bodies waiting on the sideline.

You're dealing with usually a team of about 13 to 14 varsity players and then some JV guys back behind them.

So

in both games we've had kind of that scenario things change you know we're behind on downs early on um municing scores right away it's things where

I think it's good as a football team that we've been able to deal with some adversity early on and then have leadership step up.

And that's really what's been winning us games is once we get adjusted, you can see the guys that really put the time in the off season that carry us moving forward and say, hey, listen, we're going to do this.

We got to commit to it.

But also on the side of that, there's been guys that they were not starters to begin the year and now they are.

And so they've gotten a lot better too.

So it's been just adjusting on the fly during our games.

In week one, your quarterback Blake Lebo took most of the steps at quarterback, but wasn't super involved in the passing game.

We saw Brady Axford take a lot of pass attempts in a Wildcat formation for you in week one.

Would you say that you're looking to get him more involved as a pure passer, or do you see his role as more of a manager and running quarterback to be what you envision long term for the rest of the season?

You know, we trust both of them.

We kind of see ourselves as a team where if either one is back there, they can both throw the ball very well.

and even offensively we're not really scheming up anything to be like you know let's have Brady throw the ball this many times to kind of take what you're given out on the field you know for behind the sticks we need to go into a spread formation usually we do see Brady back there um catching the shotgun snap and being a dual threat guy Blake hides the ball so well and does things you know mechanically well under center he's usually the guy there so if you're running a flood pass or anything out of that he's just the guy that tends to get a couple touchdowns in that game they've both played great and they they both really I think

take care of all the drills week after week of becoming a better quarterback, throwing, even though we're a predominantly running football team.

So I like having both of them to use and even pass that.

There's a couple other guys that, you know, even Bodie Fortin, he's stepped in at times and he's thrown some touchdowns that have, he's looked really good through the air.

So there's people that have stepped up and those two guys are just an example of a position group that doesn't really rely on one person.

And so it's good to be able to adapt.

As head coach, this is your first time starting the year 3-0.

Your best season, post-season finish-wise at least, was 2023.

That year you actually started 1-2.

And in the playoffs, beat some of the teams that took those early losses on you.

So...

Wanted to ask you getting off to such a hot start here playing some very solid teams Obviously you have some big tests ahead of you in the rest of the regular season But how do you feel the team is going to try to harness this momentum?

Getting off to such a hot start and do you think you'll be able to carry it through the rest of the regular season?

Well, I've tried to put pressure on the guys I think when you start out hot Everybody wants to assume all of a sudden that you're the best team right it's easy to think well because we've done this in the past We are going to win now

And it's my job to have the guys realize, hey, if you're not the best team out there come Saturday or Friday night.

year 0 and 1 that week and that's really what matters the most.

So it's not really about what we've done in the past and what kind of start we're off to, it really doesn't matter.

As long as, like I said, we're adapting to whatever game is in front of us and we're playing at our capabilities and we go 1 and 0 that week.

That's all we're really worried about.

I think it's dangerous to start out fast like that.

You know, the year that we went 1 and 2, we made a push because we were tested early and we played some high level competition.

I think that we're seeing that already in our schedule and we're only going to get more comp...

uh, competition with the schedule coming up in the next two, three games.

All right.

And talking about those next couple of games, Norway is your opponent this week.

So far, they're three and oh, they're in division one.

So not a team that you would have to see in the postseason, but obviously a very solid program.

The two of you are ranked the two best eight on eight teams in the UP right now.

You haven't played them since 2023, but what have you come to expect from the Knights in the past few years?

And how do you think this game is going to go overall scheming wise?

Yeah, Norway's tough.

Right now, we know that they're very athletic.

And Coach Mendina has said the same thing.

You know, they've tried to build speed in the offseason.

They know what they have.

They know what they had last year and what they lost and what they're bringing back.

I think what I see on the tape anyway is a team that is renewed and is really hungry.

You can definitely tell that they're still feeling last year and what, you know, they had for expectations and how good they thought they should have been that year.

and then the result and now you're dealing with you know what that looks like a really hungry football team it's a scary thing they they fly in their offensive sets they do such a good job offensively and on defense that same thing they fly around they're looking to play good hearty football um which when you're watching the tape it's refreshing to see you know it's nice seeing that they they know what they're doing

They're a quality football program.

They always have been.

They probably always will be.

They know what they're doing.

So I think for us to get a win, you have to be able to control the line of scrimmage.

I always say that, but it's so important.

Turnover battle.

We've had three turnovers in the last two games each.

That's going to kill you against teams like Norway because they'll take advantage of it, spread you out on offense, and then they can pour points on.

And then you're playing from behind and you're trying to throw and do things they don't normally do.

But

Um, yeah, I think that it's a really good test.

And I think the first four games that we've had have been division one teams.

So it's our final battle against these teams that have a little bit more, um, in terms of maybe a couple more backups, a couple more tools to use, um, maybe some better quality practices because they got eight on eight practice and not utilizing managers and coaches and stuff like that.

So, um, we take a lot of pride in being a small school, being a, I think we're the ninth small school in the state of Michigan playing football.

So our kids know that and they're a little bit gritty.

in that regard.

So hopefully that helps us too.

Just knowing that we're kind of like the underdog.

Coach Mendina, thank you so much for your time.

Yeah, thanks for having me.

This is your second season as the head coach for the Knights.

You went undefeated in the regular season last year, made it all the way to the state semifinals before losing.

And you're 3-0 to start this year.

So a pretty fantastic start to your head coaching career.

But how are you preparing for what looks like it'll be a tougher second half in your regular season schedule this year?

Yeah, things are going to tighten up quite a bit.

One game at a time, obviously, starting with this one right here.

We've got the number one ranked team in the UP at their field on a Saturday.

So we're expecting a lot of eyes on us and we're super excited about it.

But yeah, our guys know they got to start ratcheting up a little bit and getting a

little bit better every week.

And since dropping to eight on eight football last season's finish was the best finish the Knights have had.

So how are you trying to build on this momentum and keep the positive vibes going, try to finish even better this year?

Yeah, we just tell our group, especially our seniors, right?

The guys that were on that team last year as juniors, they got to carry that over every year.

And we just keep passing that down the line, right?

And you just kind of keep carrying that torch.

And I think they've done a good job of that.

And, you know, when you have a good year, the expectations build and you want that.

You want our guys to expect to win.

So that's kind of what they do.

And speaking about those players, are there any key players that you think are worth mentioning?

Maybe players that are listeners are going to hear their names quite a bit on the radio tonight.

Yeah, I mean, obviously our quarterback and our halfback are wide receivers.

I mean, those are the guys that are going to hopefully play some good offense for us.

You know, Lapine and Martin and Pearson and Dubey.

I mean, all those guys get all the recognition, but you know, our offensive line is pretty dang good too.

So we got to give those guys some props.

And then finally, your last match up against the Lakes, at least as a team, was in 2023.

It was actually two games you played that season and you split the series one to one.

What are you expecting from Coach Gervais and the rest of the Lakes?

After a couple years of not seeing them on the field, but obviously a pretty close rivalry here.

Yeah, super well coached team.

They always are.

They're always physical.

They know what they're doing.

You watch them on film.

You can always tell on a team as well, coach, and they are very disciplined group.

Yeah, and I look forward to coaching against Brent.

I mean, I'm good friends with him.

So yeah, it's going to be a fun day.

lakes and the visiting Norway Knights gonna be in a very competitive match today taking a look around the stance here the homestance filling up nicely still about 15 minutes ago until kickoff here I believe the Norway Knights have brought a crowd

Filling up the visitor bleacher on the opposite side of the field.

Nice to see the visiting fans making the trek out to Lake Linden for a pretty key matchup for both of these schools today.

Postseason seating a very big deal, especially out here in the UP and securing home field advantage for the playoffs with a key win here for both of these schools would be very desirable.

Possibly.

The difference in this game could determine which of these teams has home field advantage all the way through the postseason, up to an eventual possible state championship game.

Both of these schools, posh, really, they want to make that deep of a run this season so far.

And we'll have to see which keeps their hopes in better shape coming up in this match.

You heard him mentioned by coach Andy Mendina in the pregame interview.

Caleb Lapine, the quarterback.

They're senior wearing number seven today for the White and Navy visiting uniforms of the Norway Knights.

I see him out there on the field taking some practice reps as we speak.

The lakes are back in their locker room getting ready for the coin toss.

That should be happening any minute now as well.

But the offense runs largely through him.

Coach Mendita of course wanted to mention all the players on the offensive line who often don't get as much recognition through mediums like the radio.

We need to focus on who has the ball.

But a very well-rounded team running through their offense and we'll see if Lapine and the rest of the Knights

can get the job done today against a very solid Lakes team.

Taking a look at the Lakeland at Humble Lakes.

When we saw their week one game, it was Brady Axford out of the backfield, taking some time, both as a passing threat and a quarterback, but most of the time, standing in as a running back in the backfield, who was a big impact player for them.

Him and Josh Davatella out of the running game were pretty substantial threats.

for the Lakes Hall game long, helped them extend to getting well over 50 points in their opening game to start the season.

And since then, they've had two very solid games.

We'll see if they can keep that coming as well.

I also do want to announce a quick injury update.

The Knights come into week four after a big win against Ironwood on the road last week.

Norway now posts a 3-0 overall record in our 3-0 and conference play, having posted their other two victories over Munising and Gogibic.

The Knights are coached by head coach Andy Mendina, assisted by Chris Burnt and Tony Mendina.

The Lakes are also entering today's contest with a matching 3-0 record and are also undefeated in conference play.

The Lakes posted a big win on the road last week against Municing.

The Lakes' other two wins have been against Ishpeming and Ironwood.
