The High School Football Weekend began on Thursday night for several teams, including Wright and the Scenic Bluffs with Royal winning over New Lisbon, 48-28, and Bangor over Nesita, 43-0.

West begat the win against Verroqua, 26-6.

Also in 8-player football, DeSoto over Highland, 36-0, and North Crawford, 38-0 over Kick-A-Boo LeFarge on Thursday.

Last night in the area, Richland Center lost to Lancaster, 35-nothing.

Prairie Duchine, 56-6 over River Valley, and Platteville got the win against Broadhead, Judah, 56-16.

In the SWAL, Cuba City, 20, Fenimore, 13, Nouglares, 28, Mineral Point, 21, Darlington, 49, Southwestern, East Dubuque, 7.

the loss of one of their own Briggs Maxwell, and I talked to one of the Ithaca Western seniors, Quentus Banker, and I asked him about the team and how it's coping.

We have a picture of him when we do our group prayer.

We have him in the middle, and we all come together pretty well about that.

We truly do miss him and everything.

We have a conversation next with head coach Kyle Kelly of Ithaca Weston.

Kyle,

as you look back to last week, what impressed you in the win over Bangor?

Our defense played really, really solid.

A couple of adjustments were made and it made all the difference.

That team was,

I mean, a little bit like yourselves.

Certainly one of the fastest games.

that I've ever seen, was that the intent going in that you were going to keep the ball on the ground a

lot?

I don't think anyone was showing up to the game expecting an aerial assault.

True.

And then you did throw the ball a little bit in the second half, didn't you?

Yeah, I threw it six times total.

How many times do they throw

it?

Like two or three, but they were on, I think, a third string quarterback.

That guy who played quarterback normally is their running back.

So that's why they don't throw a lot to begin with, but that's why you didn't see hardly any at all.

As you prepare for this week, it's a little longer week with a game on Saturday.

Do you do things differently practice wise, Kyle?

I try to do everything about it exactly the same as much as possible.

As you get ready for Brookwood, what sticks out on the scouting report about them?

They have quite a few good athletes.

They have some speed.

Their quarterback can throw the ball a long way.

So you're expecting maybe a little bit more of a slowdown game then in some ways?

Yeah, I think they're going to be throwing the ball quite a bit more than last week, what we saw.

Do they compare with anybody you've played so

far?

I think

they're one of the better teams in

the

conference, yeah.

So are they like a Bangor team in terms of abilities or how do you look at it?

Yeah, I think that's fair.

I think the top three or four teams or a conference are all pretty equal and I'll put them up there.

When you play this game,

this is one that you're going to really have to prepare for.

Again, it's probably better to have this than a team that's winless at this point, right?

Yeah, like I said, you're always kind of looking for good competition.

So yeah, let's be a good game.

Looking at the stats from last week.

Anything stick out from your individual players, anybody that

impressed you?

Spencer Nelson's really coming along at fullback.

I think that was only his second game starting back there, and he had 125 yards against a solid team.

Anybody on defense that sticks out?

He also led us in tackles.

Hayden Burns had a really good game as well as defensive end.

So yeah, a lot of the young guys are kind of stepping up.

You did highlight your seniors

that night.

Could you say a little bit about your seniors and their leadership this year?

Yeah, they're doing an excellent job.

They've really helped out in so many different ways.

They're just a great group of kids.

Looking at this week,

you've got all of the stuff going on.

I'm sure you've given them a speech about how important the game is as

well to get some rest if they can, right?

Oh yeah, absolutely.

I told them do whatever you want to do through Wednesday and then kind of shut it down.

and then get ready for the game on

Saturday.

It's amazing how many things that these individuals are involved in.

You see them in the parade about four or five times.

Oh yeah.

Then you turn around and you play a football game on Saturday.

That's pretty tough to do, isn't it?

Oh yeah, it is, but it's fun.

Definitely.

How about health-wise, how's the team

that way this week?

We're rebounding, so we're getting people back finally.

So will you be as close to full strength this week as you've been this year?

I believe so.

Yeah, I think this is going to be the first time or as close as what we have ever have been.

Wonderful.

And what's the bottom line if you're going to win this game on Saturday against Brookwood?

We have to establish our run and then make sure we don't give up any huge plays through the air.
