I'll put you down there in beautiful Northville area.

Well, you know, I think everybody's kind of sitting there going, what the heck happened in the second half of that line Sunday?

And, you know, Jim, to me, you know what, week one, I didn't learn anything about the Lions.

I didn't already know.

It's a

pretty

good offense and it's a deep

all year what that secondary does.

If you buckle up, that's the way it is.

They are going to have to outscore people all year long.

You know, going into week one, it's always kind of a mystery.

You don't know what you're getting.

So many teams don't play your starters, but I go with the trend while you're out on the same boat, so I think that's a wash.

But I watched the bulk of the Lions game, and they got that early lead.

pretty much seemed content.

Norm is an up and coming team, but for the game to get that close to get in no overtime, you're right, Sean.

It's just, it's, it's like we have it, but we don't really know if you want to take it from the Saints.

It was almost like they're trying to give it away.

That's the impression I got.

Yeah.

And I think that's a fair assessment.

You know, and I know much was made about how the Saints were a slow starter last year, but you kind of got to that point game where you were like, okay, they're not going to stop the Saints the rest of the day.

So once you have to hope for it,

I think in particular when it was 21 to 14 and you know okay to 21 nothing leads the way.

Lions get the ball back you go at least go down the field and tack on a field goal right at the very least and for them to turn the ball over so quickly and and give them a chance to tie the game just like that that that was very frustrating to me it really was they just

back out watching you know if one wants to pay uh... that the offense is called back i guess you could say that but at the end of the day um... i think it's incumbent upon this defense to get a stop here and there and when it started to rain they were incapable of doing it i mean the saints just went down the field and um... that that jim to me that is going to be synonymous with what the detroit lions are this year they're going to have to outscore teams uh... they just are they they there isn't a lot in the defense of back

and obviously Kirby Joseph is up who knows what he's going to be when he comes back at least with Brian Branch you know there's a hope that you know when he's back he's really back so buckle up Lyon fans I think that's what this is going to be I think they're going to be a good team at the end of the year but do I think that they're one of the favorites in the NFC I don't look at it that way I really don't I know Lyon fans don't want to hear that but I got to call it as I see it and

when you're talking about a rookie, that's something you have to take into consideration.

Rookies are going to do rookie things.

I think the kid's going to be a really good player when all is said done, but he's still a rookie.

It's his first game in the National Football League.

There was some uncertainty on the other side.

When Mahogany went out, I think he saw that kind of manifest itself.

No doubt about that, but it

is

more important for the Lions, in particular in the past rush, to protect Jared Goffin

It is for other teams.

It just is.

Jared Gomp is the mobile guy that's going to stretch plays out and get outside and things like that.

So it's absolutely incumbent, first and foremost, to me.

No, you're absolutely right.

I mean, the same kind of switch some things up on both sides of the ball, and the Lions weren't able to answer the bell.

I never apologized for a victory, and they came away with a W, but a lot.

Kate Ratlidge is only in his second year, and as I mentioned, Miller, obviously, you know, this is a rookie, and there's gonna be ups and downs with the rookie, but until that happens, I think there's a little worry in regards to how that's gonna work.

And guys, let's not forget, they put right back to the test on Thursday.

They have to get right back at it.

Thursday night.

Well, then you look at the rest of the visit.

Ben Johnson said he's not taking any prisoners on, and if we won, as any indication, he's right.

He took put a half-bucket more on Carolina, Minnesota.

They did what they did to Green Bay.

What Green Bay is what other teams do to them?

Last six, seven games going to last year, their defense just looked terrible in the second half.

A couple questionable calls, but that's the game.

That's just football.

What are your assessments of the Bears and Ben Johnson saying he's going to light up everyone?

And what are your thoughts on that Minnesota Green Bay game, where Green Bay... I don't know how much of that game you've seen, Sean, but Jordan loves Jism.

Look, no sense of urgency or just phenomenal player.

Has he hit his window, do you think?

I really, I felt that way for two years.

think he is what he is.

I think he's a

good quarterback.

I'm serious.

And

I

know I've talked to some Packer fans that agree with me and some Packer fans that don't.

And I know we have a lot of mutual friends up your way that...

had to be back

fans and some of the guys that we know agree with me and some of them are like, no, no, no, you're looking at his alliance.

I think he is what it is.

I really, you're going to see some good.

Like I thought on Thanksgiving, he was on top when they came into trade, knocked off Detroit.

I thought he was unstoppable on it.

And it's that old adage.

If you have time to throw a quarterback, he'll light you up in this week.

And yesterday was kind of a snapshot in my opinion of the Jordan Logan experience.

You know, they seemed in control.

Everything was okay, and they're gonna, you know, they're gonna, and then, boom, just like that one, but it's light and struck for the bucking that the Packers couldn't answer, and it turned into a lapper, and what, the span of about three minutes and 45 seconds.

So, in my mind, you know, when you talk about that lineage, I'm gonna be honest with you, I think it's disrespectful to put Jordan Love's name up there with Brett Barb and Aaron Rodgers.

I do.

You know, Brett Barb was phenomenal.

Aaron Rodgers was phenomenal.

Jordan Love is

I think the Packers like their quarterback or a good team.

I think I'm feeling that way about the Lions.

The Lions are a good team.

The Packers are a good team.

You know, I have good teams that if you're being honest with yourself, don't legitimately have a chance to go comfortable this year.

The Bears look otherworldly and I think the biggest thing for the Bears was the question, can Ben get Caleb Williams to stop doing dumb things?

Because Caleb Williams' decision-making has been

It has been long pantied about now I didn't watch that game yesterday because I was busy watching with my lion's obligations and everything but if yesterday is an indicator I think everybody better look out because that was the one knock against Caleb Williams I think everybody in the brother knows all the talent in the world is there but you know some of the Decisions that he made on the field were were quizzical at best boy Ben Johnson knocks them out at knock that out of him Oh my goodness.

I think everybody should be afraid of bears

I'm going back to journal of 100% agree with you.

I don't even put them in the same book with a farm in Rogers and I would take part of over Rogers in a heartbeat, but it's just amazing.

You know, I had the same conversation with the Packer fan yesterday about the self life the window.

I said he hit his ceiling.

I compared him to a good goaltender.

You're going to make three or four really good saves every game, but every game you're going to make one or two mistakes.

What I mean by mistakes, mistakes at critical times, that will turn to you, because that's what he does.

I mean, he'll be going smooth.

I mean, look at that, look at that, look at that, look at that, see, look, what a beauty.

All of a sudden you let this leaker in from outside to blue line or center-ice, same with Jordan Love, that's second, third or fourth quarter.

You can almost pence one, one or two bonehead plays where there's no urgency when the game is still in the balance.

I think that's a fair assessment.

At some point in time, when you're in the league for a few years, you have to stop talking about what you think a guy is going to become.

Right.

And you have to start to deal with what he is.

And I'm at that point with Jordan Love.

Jordan Love can beat you.

I mean, as a Lyon fan, I saw that up close and personal on Thanksgiving Day last week, exceptional last year.

He really was.

And Jordan Love...

and beat you.

But is he the guy that can do it consistently?

Is he the guy that can elevate his game in the biggest moment?

And we haven't seen that yet.

And so when you're left talking to me about what you think a guy could be after a long period of time, well, then you start getting into that whole kind of category.

Well, I hope you can get there.

If he hasn't shown it yet, I have more data to suggest that maybe this guy that we saw

And I mean this at all sincerity.

He's a good quarterback.

I'm not saying he sings.

I'm not saying he's bad.

They should replace him.

But is this all he is?

And I think that we're getting into this is all he is territory.

I mean, I'm baffled, son, where the red wings still have not hired a GM.

miles from where you live what have you picked up and you find this is mind-boggling is most do

Christopher Illich really, really liked Sean Horcoff.

So it didn't surprise me that he was named Interim GM.

Do they just by default when this process...

you know finally ends whenever it ends and one's going to assume before the season starts do they just say by default well horkoff this year so we're just gonna roll forward with horkoff

don't know the answer to that I Jimmy I but I don't know the answer to that like that allegedly they reached out to other teams for permission to talk to guys and then they didn't follow up and actually talk to them I so I what is going on I I don't know the answer to that but multiple guys were reporting

So, you know, like I said, all I'm left to do is make the deduction and draw the conclusion that maybe just maybe they're going to default to Horkoff all along.

Jimmy, I don't know.

I wish I had something better to tell you, but...

This isn't just me saying this.

This is all the beatwriters in Detroit.

This is national beatwriters saying this.

There's nothing to compare this to.

And I think it runs hand-in-hand with some of the crazy stuff that's happened with the Detroit Tigers franchise.

It's, you know, is this a Christopher Eldridge problem?

You know, that's all you're left to do is kind of fall back and go, well, you know, if this kind of stuff is happening across the street at Comerica Park, you know, maybe this is an ownership issue or an upper

management issue.

There's nothing

to compare it to, and that's what makes it so darn strange.

And I agree with you, Sean, and I never thought about it.

You mentioned it.

We don't have to do nothing.

Just keep the air-term tag on a horcoff.

When you mention that, it almost makes

sense.

That's what I heard a long time ago, and I know we talked about it on your show, and I talked about it on the air here.

I know for an indisputable fact that he really liked Sean Horcoff.

So, when the interim tag came out there, it didn't surprise me in one I ordered that it was Sean Horcoff.

Now, the big question is, does he

keep Sean Horkoff as the general manager.

Maybe this is all a, I don't know, window dressing to say, well, we are talking to other guys, but we decided to stay in house.

But when multiple national beat writers are saying they reached out to teams, asked for permission, but then never followed up, that really does make one scratch ahead and go, what exactly is going on right now?

And that's where we're at.

And, you know, to the surprise of nobody you mentioned Dylan Larkin, they're not going to let him wear the T. I still don't believe he

here long term.

I don't believe he wants to be here long term.

It would be in the best interest of this hockey club where they're at right now to try to get whatever value they could from Dylan Larkin within reason because they're asked to have been out of this world.

And I know Alex to bring it being a kid from the backyard in Firmington Hills wants to be here.

I would jettison him out of here too.

This team is nowhere close to competing and you have to start thinking in terms of hockey and unfortunately there hasn't been a whole heck of a lot of that going on.

Especially one name you mentioned inside, or Elliott Freeman.

I mean, when he says this, when he mentioned something that's pretty much gospel, I love his stuff.

And yeah, it's just a mess.

And you mentioned the Brinkett and Larkin.

You may as well get something for our Brinkett, but Larkin, I agree with you.

If he does stay, don't let him wear the sleeve, as for sure.

Redstone Center coach Jamie Johnson joins us.

First of all, I asked Jamie about last week's game, a conference match against Platteville in which the Hornets were in every single set who wound up losing in the very end of all of them.

Disappointing our effort was there, but just our execution wasn't.

Over half our service he's were a one or a zero and that's not going to get it done against any team.

Got alone a great team and then.

Because of that, we only had 22 kills and we had 21 attack errors.

And again, that's not going to get it done.

On the flip side, we were up 16-7 in the first set.

Didn't hold on, but we were also 23-all in the third set.

And despite those kind of numbers, so I'm encouraged by it.

You know, we have to bounce back and play another tough rival game with River Valley.

That doesn't matter, whatever the records are.

yet alone when I feel both teams are good like we are.

I think both these teams are outstanding this year with us in Valley.

So we got to move forward from that Platteville thing, put it behind us.

We just talked about it, too, that we still have all our goals intact.

We can still control our destiny, so to speak, so not to blow it out of proportion.

We beat Platteville down at Platteville last year, so we know we're capable of doing that.

And so when we got our chance second time around,

We'll have to take advantage of that, but right now our focus has definitely shifted to River Valley.

River Valley and always an even matchup.

This year, probably no exception, Jamie.

Yeah.

Um, this is like, you know, I think they've been kind of building like this is the year, you know, with Ella there, Myers leading the way, but they've got a good, you know, cast around her too, but you know, she's been a stalwart for them.

Um, everyone knows where she's at on the court at all times and they're in court using her in the back row.

now as well for back row attacks and understandably so.

So, you know, it's still, you know, Phil, we could just probably do one recording and call it good for the year, but it really comes down to servicing.

If you can't servicing, you can't run the fun stuff and move the ball around like you'd like, and then you get yourself in trouble.

And then if you're not putting pressure on the other team,

They're going to, especially team like River Valley, they're just going to run a lot of different options and hitters coming at you from all directions.

So it's, you know, it's going to be a hype game.

It's probably going to go multiple games, I would guess, just because I think we are evenly balanced.

We each have strengths and kind of when you get the momentum in each type of set.

So it's going to be a tough one and one of another one on the road for us, which is okay right now.

We're, it's early in the season, but

You know, we do have five out of the first six in the conference around the road.

So that's going to be a tough challenge.

We're done with our home games for September.

So we got to, we're just going to get us road warrior ready for sure.

But it's going to be exciting time.

It always is.

You know, I know some people have gotten to, gotten a habit after COVID of, you know, staying home and watching the games on YouTube and things.

But I think this is one of those matches that, you know, we'd really encourage both teams.

I'm sure we'd encourage their fans.

to get out and come to because it's just the rivalry game.

It's exciting place, exciting game, and it's going to have an impact on the conference, you know, one way or the other.

This is going to impact on how that conference race goes.

You know, and I've noticed I've called many of these through the many years, but it doesn't seem like home court advantage as much in this series because your student section turns out theirs does as well.

And it doesn't seem necessarily like a road game sometimes, does

it?

No, it doesn't.

And, you know, it was true.

I remember

At one point, I think we were looking back.

I think the road team won 10 out of 11 times through a stretch.

It was just crazy.

But that also just tells you that we've always been evenly balanced and it doesn't matter the records.

Both teams rise to the level of the competition and the rivalry.

And I believe it's a respected tradition, respected rivalry.

you know, the coaches respect each other.

We respect what they do and how they do it.

We go about doing things in different ways, but we typically have very similar results of winning seasons and things like that.

Coach, as you look at how the team's playing, how do you like it now as we get into the middle of September?

Well, we've had to make a few changes, but we are playing really well right now.

For the most part, staying healthy under other than one player that we have out right now that we're hoping to be back this week.

Um, we've been playing great.

We had, we just came off a great weekend, um, winning a really tough sock tournament and we're excited to keep going.

Great.

And I guess volleyball is one of those where you, you kind of catch a lightning in a bottle.

So to speak, sometimes, and you want to use that momentum for advantage here, if you can, right?

Yeah, absolutely.

When we can keep the momentum on our side, we want to keep using it as far as we can go.

I know Jamie Johnson agrees.

It's an even matchup when you meet regardless of the year.

But how do you look at the matchup this year with Richland Center?

You know, Richland Center is always a tough team.

They're our rival for a reason.

It's always a great match.

There's always a lot of excitement.

And I think we match up really well.

I think we're the more experienced team.

And I'm hoping that we come out on top.

So in terms of going out and proving that, that's the other thing.

Sometimes you just got to go out and do what you do best, right?

Yeah, that's right.

We're really focusing on controlling our side and controlling our effort and our energy and our positive attitudes and kind of just letting the tips fall where they may.

If we can control our side and not worry about what's going on on the other side, we can be pretty unstoppable.

The noise when a River Valley Richland Center volleyball match is going on is incredible because their student section shows up, yours does as well.

It really has almost kind of a tournament atmosphere, doesn't it?

Yeah, it sure does.

The atmosphere definitely changes when Richland Center comes to town or when we go there, you know, both gyms are always very exciting, very loud.

And it's really hard to, you know, tell your team to block out the noise and just focus on what we can control.

I know you'll have a little bit of a height advantage, those some things that you can kind of key on.

Well, we're hoping to use our height to our advantage.

That's for sure.

We've really been working on just a lot of things to just better ourselves and better the ball every play.

And we're hoping our height, our experience and just luck is on our side.

Platteville had the win against Richland Center last week.

Are you looking at them?

Platteville is the team to beat.

Yeah, I think so I think it's gonna I mean hopefully if this week goes right it'll come down to us and Platteville next week on the first go around and You know, maybe we'll get lucky and someone will knock Platteville down and hopefully we can just stay on top where we are

River Valley's CAV1 team won the early match by a score of three sets to none.

Here on the varsity match, lots of key players and players that faced off last year for Richland Center, the leaders stat-wise, Elevee Weiss averaging early three kills per set.

Kylie Burns with a total of eight blocks.

Adeline Wurz with four digs per set on average and Adeline also has 11 surface aces here so far.

Ella Clements the other prolific server averaging nearly one ace per set.

On the other side some stunning numbers for Ella Myers River Valley senior nearly six kills per set and she also has

A total of 49 blocks through the matches that she has played so far and has a good hitting percentage of right around a 500 percentage.

Belladivini averaging four and a half digs per set.

She is back after injury.

Josie Mahoney has served 25 aces this season so far.

And the other thing we didn't talk about in the pre-match that much.

I know that Coach Hill touched on it a little bit but

River Valley won some pretty impressive matches over the weekend in their tournament, knocking off teams that are predominantly pretty tough, including the likes of Reedsburg.

Richland Center also defeated Reedsburg in a tournament, but they also faced Lodi and won.

They defeated Oregon.

Oregon has a decent ball club and they defeated Salk Prairie.

So River Valley on a bit of a roll coming into the night here tonight against Richland Center.
