Welcome to the land of Dorothy and Toto.

We are live in Emporia, Kansas today for the Michigan Tech.

Huskies third at non-conference football game of the season It is the Kirkish furniture countdown to kickoff Emporia State Hornets Michigan Tech Huskies a top 25 battles set here at Francis Welch Stadium in just under half an hour My name is in fact Josh Yolotello, and I thank you for joining us for another broadcast of Michigan Tech athletics here today

It's been an interesting couple of days certainly the Huskies able to fly to Kansas for this matchup here courtesy of one of our very

appreciative donors and really thankful for what they were able to provide to allow this game to happen here.

It is a steamy one out there at least by Houghton standards anyway.

Temperature is at 85 but the humidity dew point is up a little bit so it feels more like 88.

But then you go down to the brand new turf here at Welch Stadium and I'm sure temperatures feel well into the hundreds down on the Black Creek diesel and automotive turf that is brand new for this season with the Emporia State.

It is the second time this season the Huskies have actually been the opponent for a brand new turf unveiling.

They did play a high school game here last night my understanding is but this is the first game Emporia State has played on this.

I give you a little bit of a look at it.

It is

Almost all the same shade green a little bit lighter I guess in the areas between the Zeroes and fives and then from the fives back to the zeros the other way there It's that little bit darker similar to what you'd see at tech just not quite as pronounced It's got the Emporia State E at the midfield logo to my left.

It is got a script Emporia State in black background with the yellow color for the

actual script itself and then on the edges it's got that hive look to it with the

Hexagons that kind of built that out so kind of a unique look there down to my right They've got that same color scheme and everything just with hornets in the script and then you've got the Video board off to that side past the back of the track which is in more of a tan color out there so unique facilities certainly the unfortunate thing is they suffered some structural damage to the Stands that are across from us which have a nice rock facade on them.

So unfortunately those are

blocked off and unable to be used those are expected to be demolished after 90 years of existence coming up in December and they'll be rebuilt for next season but something certainly is unique about this place and it's it's a nice environment so far we'll see if the Huskies can make it their own here this afternoon.

So for the last time that the Huskies were out on the field, it was at home against Midwestern State.

And the game was more of an offensive battle than we'd seen the previous week.

Huskies rolling up 472 yards of total offense, 240 on the ground, 232 through the air.

So a pretty good balance there by the Husky offense and controlling time of possession by seven minutes.

Bryce Kearns got the opening score of the game.

The only score of the first quarter, a 16-yard pass.

Good job at tiptoeing the sidelines there and fighting through some traffic to find the football and dive into the end zone, making that catch at the 3-0-2 mark.

So the Huskies got the first score.

They get the second score as well.

Elliot Larner finishes off a push-push, a little bit more than five minutes into the second quarter.

And the Huskies would take a 13 and make it then 14.

to nothing lead.

I think it was only 13 as a matter of fact.

I feel as though they missed the extra point on that one.

Jake Roof would score again in the second quarter.

An eight yard touchdown run of 548 made it a 20 to nothing lead.

the Mustangs would get the next score and finally start chipping away at things.

Joseph Dodds ran went in from a yard out a quick drive of seven plays but just three minutes off the clock and it was the Huskies up by two touchdowns.

Abram Larner catches a TD pass from Elliott.

53 yards it goes in the last minute and 20 and you thought that might be the last score but the Mustangs were

unable to sustain any sort of offensive drive.

So it gave Michigan Tech the football back with a chance to make something happen.

They moved down the field 33 yards and Avery Kaczarski hits a career long and Michigan Tech tying record, a record tying 51 yard field goal as time expired there.

So the Huskies went into the break with the big lead.

At that point it was 31 to 7.

MSU would get the next score.

Anje Feliciano, a long pass that got in behind the Huskies, would get them on the board 31-14.

Kaczarski would hit a 28 yard field goal later in the third quarter to make it 34-14.

Dominic Cox would get a touchdown to start the fourth quarter after a long play 11 play 75 yard drive in four and a half minutes 34 21 Jake Roof would add an extra score and this I believe is where the extra point was missed so 40 to 21 case Peacock on the ensuing drive gets a touchdown pass to bring it back to a two-score game But the Huskies milk it away as Elliot Larner

brings the Huskies down the field on nine plays in five minutes, 12 seconds, 80 yards, and 48-27 the final score for the Huskies in that game.

For Emporia State, they've played two games so far.

They have faced some teams that the Huskies are familiar with.

The Minot State Beavers, who the Huskies haven't played in a couple years, were the first opponent, and it was Emporia State winning.

All but the fourth quarter in that game, they actually allowed Minot State to score three times in the fourth quarter to make it more of a game.

It was a 36-30 final score in that contest in there.

Ben Harris with 25 of 41 passing, 242 yards and two touchdowns.

Camden Crooks rushed 18 times for 103 yards and Trendon Collins led all receivers with eight catches in that game.

Then you take it to last week at Pittsburgh, Kansas, taking on the Pittsburgh State, who the season opening matchup was with Ferris State earlier, so they were coming off a loss.

And Emporia State went ahead and handed them another by a score of 21 to 10.

The second half was fairly uneventful.

ESU led 14-7 after the first added a touchdown in the second.

And the Pittsburgh State was only able to get a field goal in the third quarter to try to bring that one a little bit closer.

Again, Ben Harris throwing over 40 passes, 27-42, 297 yards of touchdown, two interceptions.

Camden Crooks rushing for 50 yards, Harris another 46 on his own.

But the bigger news, I guess, from those first two games was that landed boss, the Emporia State linebacker, was named the MIA football defensive player of the week.

for both weeks and that stretches back into last week or last season to make it four consecutive times.

Landon Boss has been named the defensive player of the week for the conference.

The senior from Osage City, Kansas leading the conference and ranked 13th in the nation in total tackles.

Second in their league in tackles for a loss.

A consensus All-American and the MIA a defensive player of the year last season as well as a first team academic All-American.

So number six Landon Boss.

is a player the Huskies are gonna have to keep an eye on here today.

Back at France's Welch Stadium in Emporia, Kansas, Michigan Tech and Emporia State getting closer to kick off in this non-conference battle here today.

But as we talk conference, let's turn our attention to the Great Lakes Conference, the home of the Huskies, and last week the GLIAC teams were 6-2 in conference play.

Wayne State getting shut out 52-0 on Thursday.

Grand Valley State winning 56-14 on Thursday as well.

Ferris State 38-3 over Bentley on Friday.

Then on Saturday last week it was Davenport 28-14 over Truman State.

Saginaw Valley beating Texas A&M Kingsville 41-24.

Roosevelt 41-28 winners over Quincy and Tiffin defeated Northern Michigan 35-7.

That turns our attention to the players of the week in the conference and nearly a clean sweep for the Huskies.

However, the offensive player of the week goes to quarterback Andrew Schuster of Grand Valley State who completed 10 of 15 passes for 283 yards and five touchdowns in that win.

His 28.3 yards per completion, second all-time in a single game in the conference in the 18.9.

for attempt fourth and fifth touchdown passes eighth all time in a single game so some records being made there five passes that covered 35 yards or more and half of course of his completions resulted in a touchdown so Andrew Schuster of Grand Valley State the conference player of the week defensive player of the week goes to senior linebacker Chase Cook of the Huskies who led with ten tackles

Two for a loss with Asak and two interceptions in that win over mid-western.

He ended the Mustang second drive of the game in the first quarter.

Picked them off again in the second, returning it 34 yards to position the Huskies for their second touchdown of the game.

Cook leads the Huskies with 21 tackles on the season.

And the special teams player of the week goes to a Huskies as well.

Junior kicker Avery Kucharski hitting a pair of field goals in that win tying the school record with a 51 yarder as the first half clock expired and also a 28 yarder in the third quarter adding four extra points and three punts for a 40 yard average.

And then you throw in the kickoff duties as well averaging nearly 61 yards per kickoff.

And a pretty good day for Avery Kucharski.

He scored 15 points for the Huskies this season with three field goals and six extra points.

He's the special teams player of the week.

Again, joining his teammate Chase Cook, the defensive player of the week, and Andrew Schuster of Grand Valley, the offensive player of the week.

That sets up this week's game.

Some already in action, which we'll get you scores for as the broadcast progresses.

Saginaw Valley finally has to leave home, but they don't have to go far.

They go to Northwood up in Midland.

That was a noon kickoff.

Wayne State at Hillsdale, also a noon kickoff.

and Indianapolis at Davenport, a noon kickoff as well.

Still to come here today, Roosevelt is at Southwest Baptist in Bolivar, Missouri.

That's a two Eastern start.

Northern Michigan at St.

Thomas also starts at two o'clock Eastern.

Then tonight, Grand Valley State at Ashland, a seven o'clock Eastern start and Ferris State at Central Washington.

The division two featured game of the week at nine o'clock Eastern.

Ellensburg, Washington, a battle of two top 10 teams.

touch on in just a couple of minutes here but so far this season Jake has rushed 35 times for a net gain of 191 yards and two scores has only lost a total of five yards on his rushes this season which is a big key to success for Michigan Tech and I asked Jake what has been

the big key to the Huskies success so far in the running game this season?

I mean the O-line really that's the big key.

I mean a lot of them have been playing together a couple years now so they're really starting to click and then when they're all playing well it's I mean it's easy and fun to run

mine.

pretty decorated high school career.

I think that was reading in your senior year about 50 touchdowns.

Did you get a lot of interest from some bigger schools when the recruiting process was going on?

A little bit, yeah.

I went to kind of a smaller school, so not a ton of big school interest.

But when I came up here and met the coaches and met the players that were here at the time, I just I loved it.

And it was an easy decision for me.

What have you decided on in terms of a major and what do you hope to be doing with that when football is over?

My major is engineering management.

I'll graduate that with that in December.

And I'm not sure really what I want to do with that yet, so a lot to figure out in the next few months in terms of career for me.

week of travel here for us getting to fly down to Kansas here.

What has that experience kind of been like for you to kind of do something a little bit different with this team rather than just the long bus rides all

over?

Yeah.

The two-hour plane ride, I feel like, was a lot better than the 15-hour bus ride.

So I think a lot of the guys enjoyed that.

A couple of them were nervous, but all the trips are fun.

So yeah, it's been good.

Any other trips that you've been on or places that you've got

a chance to visit that have kind of stuck out to you most amongst your

career?

I like when we kind of go downstate some of those games the Grand Valleys or the Wayne States because a lot of the the families from downstate come to visit so we usually have a packed husky crowds for games like that.

When you're not in

school or when you're not on the football field, what are some of the interests that you like to take part in?

Over the summer, golfed a lot and kind of just hanging out with the guys a lot.

Like over the summer, when you're all up there and you're doing football workouts, just hanging out with the guys is a lot of fun.

Halfway

decent golfer?

I'm alright, not great.

We got some good guys on the team, but I'm alright.

So when you look at what Emporia State's got to offer here for us today, what do you think is going to be the biggest key to getting a victory for the Huskies?

I think a lot of it's just doing your job on offense and not getting behind the sticks and penalties.

We just got to limit the penalties and if we can do that, then we got a good chance.

Any players that you've looked at over the course of your time growing up that you've tried to emulate your game after?

Yeah, I'm a pretty big Bears fan.

So Matt Forte growing up, I like this game.

So when I was younger, yeah, try to emulate him.

Any shout-outs you want to give to anybody before we let you go?

Mom and Dad love you.

And good to talk to him here earlier today and get a feel a little bit anyway on what Jake's all about.

And again, in his high school career in that senior season at Lawton, Michigan, was the nation's leading rushing touchdown king.

49 total touchdowns, 2,367 yards as a senior.

so nice job for Jake there and of course led the Huskies in rushing yards last season and looking to do the same again this year.

Back to the countdown to kick off here with head coach Dan Metlak and coach the question that a lot of people have been asking me really leading up to this game whether it's been in the off-season or this week is Emporia State, why?

Kind of walk us through the process of what it's like trying to get some of these non-conference game scheduled and ultimately why Emporia ended up being the choice.

Yeah, I mean it just simply comes down to they needed a game and we did.

Obviously the MIAA

I thought about a lot like the GLIAC.

There's not a lot of teams that are looking to schedule games with those teams if they don't really have to.

So we got late in the spring last year and some of the teams from the GMAC or teams that we would have played back in the day that were in our league.

just we're not willing to schedule home and home with us so we we had to keep going further and further south and found a good match with these guys so they were in the same boat couldn't get anybody to schedule with that were you know reasonable driving hours so we made it work we're down here this year they'll come back to us next year and then we'll kind of reevaluate whether or not it makes sense to keep moving forward but we're excited about the matchup

well we don't necessarily have to say who but

a donor made it possible for the Huskies to fly down here and make this trip a little bit more reasonable.

What is it like to have that kind of support from the donors and alumni at Michigan Tech to help make this a reality?

Yeah, it's been incredible these last couple of years.

There's been a lot more people getting involved and we can't thank them enough for that.

Obviously the guy, and I'm not sure he wants me to make it public of who he is at this point and show it and we'll get recognized for what he's done.

been heavily involved with the program since he graduated from Michigan Tech and it's not just this trip that he's been very gracious with not only with his time and his effort but obviously with his checkbook as well so but made the trip a whole lot more manageable for us being able to charter a flight down and do it that way rather than making a two-day trip on the bus and then cannonballing home so we can't take him enough for that and how do you feel like the guys have handled

that I mean we've done this once before but the guys who are on this trip

it didn't get to experience that at Texas.

Well yeah I mean this is a completely different way to do it.

Four years ago when we went to Texas we were on a commercial flight which you know brings along all the other headaches that come with flying you know you do it like a normal passenger passenger when you do it that way so when you're traveling with the party of 80 going through an airport and checking through security and everything else it's a nightmare so to be able to do it

where we just drive up to the plane, you know, a quick security check and get on and go.

You know, you can't be any more first class than that when it comes to traveling for a college football game.

So a ton more easy yesterday than it was four years ago for sure.

So let's talk a little bit of football here last week.

450 yards of offense.

48 points, you know, you said in the post game, you really can't complain when those types of things come out.

But naturally, you and the coaching staff break down the film, look for things that you guys can work on.

So what were some of the things that stuck out to you the most about last week's film?

Well, first of all, you know, you get turnovers right away in the first quarter and come away with zero points.

That cannot happen against good football teams.

Obviously, we get that first one, you know, down around the 10, 15, whatever it was, we're way down in there and don't come away with any points and then, you know, squander away the next opportunity as well.

You know, we got to be better with that.

I've said it a ton of times, you know, being able to play both off the offense, defense play off the offense where we're playing together in complementary football.

And you know, when the defense is getting off the field the way they were to be able to put points on people early, obviously.

you know, take some momentum in a more aggressive way than we did even last week.

And so I loved what we did in a lot of ways last week.

But again, right, whether you score 48 points or not, there's always things that we're looking at in a film that.

where we could have been better and need to be better.

So we worked hard this week on getting some of those things fixed offensively from a communication standpoint up front and what the key was seeing in the back end in terms of where we're trying to take advantage of some of the green grass.

And then defensively, of course, keeping guys in front of us.

It's been two weeks in a row where we had guys running free behind us.

And they catch a couple of those balls that they dropped last week.

That's a completely different game.

So we got away with it.

And you'd always like to be correcting things off of a win, obviously.

So that part's been good.

But those are things that are going to come back to bite us if we don't get fixed quick.

From the opponent's perspective, I always like to pick out a couple of players, oftentimes at the quarterback.

And we'll talk about him in a moment.

But they've got a linebacker now who's won their defensive player the week award four straight weeks.

So what is it about his game that makes him so effective and can really

Hamper and other teams offense.

Yeah, he's athletic.

I think they you know, it looks like on film they give him pretty free reigns to kind of Improvise if you will you know, there's times where he's just shooting gaps and

you know kind of playing behind everything not wanting to get caught up in the old line and you know things that you don't traditionally see from that position in some of those schemes and Buddy gets home a lot I mean he makes a ton of tackles he's opportunistic when the ball's in the air had a pick again last week and you know so he's good from that standpoint so he's you know he's like a lot of guys we see in our league in terms of the athleticism the size of physicality

But we're going to have to know where he's at and obviously when he does get aggressive or over aggressive, if you will, I'll be able to take advantage of the situations.

All right, there you go.

Head coach Dan Metlach will actually cut off the next question about quarterback.

They're starting quarterback Ben Harris because Ben Harris is actually not going to start for the Emporia State Hornets this week.

I was going through some of the

Pre-game preparations here and talking to the broadcast team from the Emporia side and they said that last week towards the end of the game Harris kind of came off the field a little bit gingerly following a play and While he's participated in practice for a good portion of the week Unfortunately, he was

limited enough to where they are going to instead go with quarterback Jameson Sarver, the sophomore from Olathe, Kansas at 6-2-2-0-1.

So he instead of Harris will be the starting quarterback for Emporia.

Now the Hornets have all the confidence that they need in Sarver who did start a couple of games last year and was the quarterback when the Emporia State

Football squad got the 117th win for their head coach.

These new school record for Garen Higgins.

He's now up to 120 victories in his career at Emporia State and past the namesake of the stadium here, Fran Welch.

So Garen Higgins in his 21st season will turn to the sophomore, Jameson Sarva.

But it will be the Huskies who will get the ball first.

Emporia State won the coin toss as elected to defer and that will now make it Emporia State kicking off to Abram Lerner and Jackson Lippert standing back inside their own five Huskies will move right to left away from the video board wearing the all whites today with black numerals black helmets the script tech on there Emporia State in all black helmets jerseys pants with gold numerals on there

and a little bit of cloud cover here providing some shelter for them from the hot sun here on this Saturday.

We may see some packages with Alex Bueno getting into the mix here today, but it will be DeVries, Post, Mason, Ball and Dane in across the front left to right as usual.

Jake Roof in the backfield gave Popko at tight end.

Three receivers but minus Bryce Kearns today.

It'll go to Roof first and he's gonna try to go left tackle searching for some room.

He'll get no gain.

Stop right there at the 25 yard line.

Bring up second down.

Huskies will start with Abram Larner, Jackson Lippert, and Nick Nora at the wide receiver spots as Titan Popko will jog off the field in favor of the second tailback, which will be Samuel Delgado from San Antonio, Texas, wears number 23 in white today.

Huskies will put two receivers on the short side.

The Emporia side of the field is the balls on the left hash.

Nora will now jog his way over to the right side and goes Delgado as well.

Larner looking, waiting, pocket collapses, he's flushed, he's running and will pick up a couple running into the Hornets on the sideline for a short game.

They're gonna give him up to the 27 yard line or so and will be third and long here for the Huskies.

Head referee today is Dwight Niebling, umpire Daniel Funk, headline judge is Bradley Hartzog, line judge Patrick Clare, field judge Cooper Boyd, side judge is Joshua Schmidt, back judge Reggie Harris and center judge is Eli O'Day.

Huskies with their first third down of the afternoon and it will be

Larner dropping back looking to throw fires toward the outside It's through the hands of Abram who was on his way down a little bit trying to cut that one back toward the numbers But we do have a player down on the field for Emporia at the 35 yard line It's not going to affect the result of that play and it will be a punt situation here for the Huskies The concern will now go to the 35 yard line or so of Emporia State and the injured Hornet down on the field

Corey Estates defense, again led by their senior linebacker Landon Boss at 6-1-2-28.

Of course, in football these two teams have never met before.

The Hornets will come back to face the Huskies in Houghton next year, but they do have a little bit of experience against each other.

For those of you like me who remember back in 2010,

The two schools met in the women's basketball elite eight in St.

Joseph, Missouri, and the Lady Hornets won that game 91 to 85 on the way to their first national championship.

In volleyball, the Huskies were the only team to defeat the Hornets in their first 23 matches of the 2008 season, one that saw Emporia State go 34 and four and win the MIAA championship that year.

So they've played each other in a couple of other sports, but overall, Michigan Tech and Emporia State, not all that familiar with each other.

Well, the first quarter numbers actually all pretty even in the end 20 plays 125 yards for Emporia State three of five on third down 707 possession time Huskies running 17 plays for 107 yards 753 of possession time there both teams been penalized three times both teams three of five on third downs

A little bit of a delay here for media time out.

The ball just feels like Emporius, or game just feels like Emporius State's been controlling it just because their tempo right now has been so fast that it almost feels hard to keep up with it.

Well, Emporia State has answered the Michigan Tech scoring drive with one of their own here.

Again, the time that the Hornets take on offense, it's just such a quick tempo.

Get the amount of time off the clock here as soon as I can appropriately math that one out.

It's been a day where Elliott's elusiveness and Samuel Delgado's elusiveness on his four carries have provided a little bit more spark to the offense, but Tech will continue to do as they do here and try to grind out that defensive line here.

The completions to Abram today have not always been textbook in terms of the smoothest grabs of all time, but no matter how he catches it, the fact of the matter is he catches it.
