Hello everyone and welcome to Calumet.

In this week's 3MHSA matchup we'll see them take on the Nagani minors.

Both teams 2-0 a very high stakes game to start here as something pretty special.

For a high school football game, happens off to my right, a military helicopter landing just outside the field here in Calumet.

Michigan Army National Guard going to have a couple of helicopters flying in as part of a military service appreciation night here.

And a big game could not have picked a better time to do it, as these two teams, both with perfect starts this regular season, are looking to fight to lock up some early playoff spots in their respective high school divisions.

Two coaches taking over for pretty legendary coaches in their staff.

Josh Franti starting in 2022.

Head coach for the Bagani Miners, Jeff Neme starting just last year in 2025, but they have not stopped with the success of either of these locals.

Most of them longtime assistants at their respective programs.

And now both of them in charge.

Again, fairly new coaches, but ready to throw themselves.

Once again, into 48 minutes of high school football action to see who comes out on top.

Yeah, I appreciate you guys.

All right Looking at your season so far.

You started the year two and oh, you'll beat Houghton 14 to seven here in your home opener and then beat ishman westwood 27 to 8 on your first road game of the year

What are the big things that you've seen out of your team so far that helped you win those games?

And are there any standout issues that you want to see improve over the next few weeks?

Yeah, I mean, early in the season, you're always looking to improve, right?

You never know what you got coming into game one.

And obviously, you know, there's going to be things to fix.

But I thought the guys battled well, dealt with some adversity early that we haven't had the last few seasons.

So I thought that was a good lesson for them to learn and then to be able to go down on the road and play a solid Westwood team and kind of

start out with the battle and just kept chipping away.

So from week one to week two, it was good to see the improvement, but we still got a long way to go.

All right.

Are there any key players

that you think will be standout performers in your matchup this week against Nagani or any players that you expect to see an increased role compared to weeks one and two?

Yeah, you know, our backfield's been been pretty dynamic the last two years.

Those guys got a lot of experience, a lot of games under their belt.

So then just kind of controlling the ball and doing their jobs and and

At the end of the day, it all starts up front.

So our guys up front have been working hard communicating and making sure we're on the same page together.

So our offense can run knowing Nagani has a very good football team coming up.

So we got to be solid up front.

All right.

And you started as head coach

here in Calumet in 2022.

Since then, you've only missed the playoffs one time.

That was in 2023.

You've had some really good playoff runs in the recent past here at Calumet as well.

The Copper Kings feel like they really have a winning culture going into the season that's been very long established.

How does that feel different as a coach when you know you're coming in and often winning is the expectation for your

team?

I think it's the fun thing, right?

You want to build that winning culture and you expect certain things.

And that's always one of our goals is trying to get as much football on as we can together.

Because at the end of the day, the seasons are short.

These guys only have nine guaranteed games.

And if you can extend that season and get a few more extra weeks of the guys, it's just even more added fun.

All right.

And Nagani's also coming into this game 2-0.

Last season, when the two of you matched up, you actually beat them 33 to 18 at Nagani.

So what are you expecting from this team?

And as I'm sure they're riled up getting ready for what's a very big game on their schedule as well How are you hoping to stand out and beat them in this week three matchup?

Yeah, they're very well coached team They're very solid very sound they got big big guys up front They run the ball very well, and then they got a dynamic athlete and

Evan Delangelo, who can go over the top on teams.

So just making sure our guys are squared away with their jobs.

And when all 11 guys are doing their jobs, we're pretty tough.

But we know we got a big challenge coming in.

Alright, and finally it's gonna be a pretty special

game here in Calumet.

It's gonna be a Veterans night.

They're gonna have a flyover for the National Anthem and also they are going to be inducting the Hall of Fame class for the class of 2026.

If you have anybody on the Hall of Fame class that you want to shout out or any veterans that you want to mention before we wrap up our interview here.

Yeah, it's gonna be a great night.

We got to fly over obviously with some helicopters which doesn't happen.

I think it happened once when I was at Tech, but I know for high school, I can't remember in the UP it happening, so it's going to be very cool.

I expect a huge crowd and then with the Hall of Fame crew coming in.

I know Andy Storm, one of my relatives, absolutely loves Copper King football and played it back in the day and played at Michigan Tech.

And so I know he'll be fired up to see a good football game.

Coach Nimi, thank you for your time.

Starting off, you had a 2-0 start to your season.

You were able to take down Marquette 30 to 28 and a 42 to 6 win over Gladstone.

What are the big things that you saw from your team in those games that you think you did really effectively and what do you think needs work going into this match against Calumet?

You know, I mean, the things that we did well, block, tackle, the things that we're kind of built on in our town and in our program and we're going to have to continue to do that against the very tough Calumet team that is kind of based on those same things.

A lot of similarities between the programs and I think whoever does those two things the best is going to come out ahead tonight.

Evan DeLangelo was a player that we heard a lot about in our work in our pre-game show interview with the other teams head coach here.

On top of his work as a dynamic player for you, are there any other players that you want to shout out in particular that you think will be really impactful in today's game?

Sure, you know, I mean, there's a lot of names.

We're running back by committee.

We've got, you know, hopefully two or three kids playing at fullback, two or three kids playing at tailback.

We've also got some guys that...

are also able to catch and run with the ball as far as wide receivers go, but it all kind of goes with our quarterback number four Kyle Waterman.

He gets him the ball.

He's also an able and capable runner for us, too.

So he would be a player that has a good game today.

We should be in good shape.

This is your second year as head coach for the Nagani Miners.

You've been an assistant since 1997, I believe.

In the past year, you were able to make it to the playoffs despite being bumped up to Division 5.

So I'm just asking you, how do you try to continue growing and developing as a head coach while also getting off to a very solid start?

you know just I mean putting in the work every day we as a coaches we spend some time in the summer doing a lot of different things and you know trying to find new ways and better ways to do things and just just keep preaching at the things we do well though too right like sometimes you can get a little too cute and forget about blocking and tackling and that's really the crust of the game so we're that you know that's kind of our focus and if we

can continue to get better every day at that.

We feel like we can get better as a team.

All right.

And the miners have had a lot of success in recent years.

You made it all the way to the state championship back in 2022.

You've made the playoffs every year since 2019.

And one of the consistent things that you've been running into in that time is that Calumet has usually been right up there with you contending for playoff spots, making big pushes.

Is this game starting to feel like it has more meaning to you week to week?

And also, what are you expecting from

Calumet in today's matchup?

You know, it's not starting to, it just does.

It's been that way for a while.

I mean, like I said, very similar programs.

You know, Coach Jake for us and Coach Crosy for Cali way back, you know.

Up until a couple years ago those two guys were two very successful head coaches that ran similar programs and you know Josh and I now are kind of taking on that challenge of filling their shoes and doing doing similar things so It's it's really it's always great to come up here and play or host you guys because it's just It's usually a really good football game.

They're going it's minor.

One of the big ticket matchups of the year for both of these teams.

Very competitive rivalry recently and both teams very much in competition for the playoffs coming into this season.

A long story of success for both over the previous years.

In the year 2022, Nagani actually reached the state championship.

So they have reached near the heights of high school football success very recently.

I believe there's still a short delay here.

It's a bit of an elaborate setup, more than the usual for a national anthem.

So understandable that there's a bit of a delay here as things get set up.

Both teams running back by committee, they have a three running back set each for Calumet, Oscar Locus, Keith Coyvisto, and Trent Anderson.
