I'm Dirk Ember off with you here on MIX 93 WKJ and WMPL Radio Well.

Here we go.

The season is about to start.

Michigan Tech Sports kicking in in full with a double header tonight.

Michigan Tech volleyball at home against Minnesota Duluth.

That match set to start at five at the varsity gym at the SDC.

It's all part of the UP North Tournament that is actually being hosted by Northern Michigan, but there's one match.

It's kind of a road.

match right is going to be played here at the SDC and then the Huskies will head down for the rest of the weekend down at Northern Michigan University but what a way to kick off the season for coach Cindy Pendrell and the volleyball Huskies great program in Minnesota Duluth coming in for that first matchup so that is tonight five o'clock we will have that match on the air as well but tickets are on sale at the Central Ticket Office at 906-487-2073.

Now we'll go right from Michigan Tech volleyball into Josh Yuletel's call of the Michigan Tech football season opener from Bemidji State University in Bemidji, Minnesota.

That game is scheduled to start at 7.

Josh will be on the air right around 6.30 on Mixed 93.

And again, we'll go right from that broadcast of volleyball into Josh's pregame for the big football matchup with head coach Dan Netlite getting his team all ready for that season opener.

Their home opener will be next week, a week from this Saturday on the fifth.

at beautiful Curly Stadium in Houghton.

Now the Michigan Tech football team picked to finish third in the GLIAC preseason coaches poll and coming off an impressive seven and four record last season.

going four and three in the Gliac and the Huskies were sensational on the road.

They were five and one.

So that's a good news going into this first game against Bemidji State.

The Huskies beat last year here at home 37 to 17, but Bemidji always a tough team and they were ranked number 16 in the nation at that time.

Josh Hilly Tello the play-by-play voice of the Michigan Tech football team will have the call for us as I was mentioning and last week during the media day had a chance to talk to veteran defensive coordinator and linebackers

coach Brian Bubba Thomas about the difference from last year to this year with so many more guys gaining experience.

Yeah we're very fortunate with the guys that are coming back.

Obviously we have some holes that we lost a little bit but you know bringing you know seven whatever it is back on our starting lineup like it helps a lot especially with bringing some younger guys along they understand what we're trying to do schematically also culture wise too so guys that have done it on the field understand

Hey, what what our standard is and that's going getting down to our younger players and hopefully continue to build that.

We had a chance to talk to Pierce a little while ago.

How have you seen his growth both as a player and as a leader?

Yeah, I mean, the biggest one is is the leadership.

He was a really good player for us last year.

The year before he was a little bit banged up and everything, but you see him attacking the winter conditioning, the summer lifts.

All that stuff was a little bit different this year and him not just worried about himself, but bringing the other guys along is especially the defensive line.

But...

Even the linebackers, the secondary, everybody trying to build in to the right fit, basically on his defense.

Where do you feel like depth is now behind some of those guys who got to play last year?

I think it's good.

I think we had a lot of guys that actually got a lot of minutes last year in some backup roles.

And now some are coming into some starting roles, or the threes are becoming twos.

And I think building that through spring ball and then also fall camp, I think it's really good.

I think we're going to play a lot of players this year, which we're very fortunate.

I guess we'll see a week one on it.

But hopefully you guys aren't playing 70, 80 snaps where we can spell them a couple times.

Defensive coordinator Brian Thomas also talked about becoming a father for the first time recently.

It's been fun.

We've got a three and a half month old right now.

So it's obviously different.

I tell the guys I'm a lot more calmer just because now you've got to deal with the baby.

You'd have to ask them if I am with that.

But it's been awesome.

Wife's been great with it, handling those duties, especially during football season.

But yeah, it's a different perspective on life, but I absolutely love it.

goals for this season for for your group here as we get ready for you know an exciting campaign.

Yeah we're gonna try to do whatever we can to make sure we go one and all against Bemidji and then we'll figure it out from there.

So if we can get a win whether it's 50 to 49 or 3-0 defensively we're gonna try to do that.

Hey, welcome back to this week at Michigan Tech Athletics.

We're getting set for the season and home opener for Cindy Pendrell and Michigan Tech volleyball team.

They're taking on a really good Minnesota Duluth squad tonight.

here on the mix and coach Pindrell is with us.

Second season coach, I know things are probably settled in a little bit more than they were at this time last year.

Yeah, absolutely.

Last year was, you know, trying to learn, you know, what we were about and the personnel that we have and what everyone can bring.

We unfortunately had to battle quite a bit of roster changes with lineups and all that stuff due to injury.

But, you know, we are off to a very great start this year.

I feel much more organized and the team is obviously much more organized as well because all the different things we've put into place.

We really have a

good system in place.

We have a really good leadership group and a committee system on our team.

So everyone has a say in every little thing that we're doing behind the scenes.

So generally speaking, we are very much, much more organized than we were last year.

And we're off to a very good start this year with team buy-in and just drive and compete and all of those things.

Our practices have been very lively, very focused.

And, you know, this team is just very hungry for some success.

You know, in your season preview, you've talked a lot about how the leaders are coming in ready to go.

Zurich is one

of those players, talk about her and how important she is.

She is so important.

And she is like a chameleon.

She is very well-documented that she's played in multiple positions.

But she really approaches every day with a learning mindset.

She is very attentive in meetings.

And she's always asking good questions.

And sometimes seniors can drop off or fourth years can drop off with the feedback aspect of like, ah, I know what I'm doing.

I've been out here for a while, especially starters.

But she is not that type of person.

And she's always looking to find ways to improve her game.

She is going to be full-time on the outside, at least for the starting portion of the season here.

So she has really rounded out her game with the ability to pass, play defense, and, you know, battle for lots of plays at the net.

So, you know, we're really leading on Rachel a lot in terms of our scoring capabilities.

And then in terms of leadership too, she might not have a C on her chest.

She's not one of our formal captains, but by, you know, by demonstration, she is certainly one of our leaders, and we look to her a lot.

A year ago, Rachel was on the run.

right side and we had quite a few left sides that were battling for those positions there.

Due to injury and graduation, we have a wide open battle on the left side for the other.

left side spot.

So due to necessity, we moved Rachel to the left towards the last half of last season, but she has certainly solidified that role.

And now we're looking to a bunch of people to potentially rotate through that spot and see how it goes.

We are very thankful to have Kate Locke back, who is one of the people that had a season ending injury last year before we even started with our matches.

She is fully rehabbed and doing great in practice and paying attention to a lot of the details in terms of getting herself healthy and getting

ready.

So we're hoping to sprinkle her in from time to time.

But yeah, she was cleared right before season started.

So we're very happy to have her back on the court.

And I know she's feeling pretty good.

We also have two freshmen who have a lot of potential.

And, you know, in my opinion, they are the future of this team in terms of the outside.

So that's Reagan Leslie and Kayla Hananen.

They are having excellent practices and they are developing and, you know, still getting used to the gym and all of that stuff.

But they are really showing out in practice.

So I have a feeling that we're going to be rotating through those three in particular on the outside.

I'm not quite sure how we're going to start yet.

We've got a little bit more to determine.

It might be sometimes match-up based.

It might just be who's got the hot hand.

But yeah, I'm confident in our outsides to have a really good impact this year.

You've talked about Maddie Torola and her maturation is beyond her years and experience at this level.

What is it about her that makes her seem like she's further along in her Huskies career?

Yeah, Maddie Torola is awesome.

have favorites on the team but you know if I did she'd be one of the favorites.

Just the way that she approaches her development and her ownership of the game she takes so much pride in how she plays and being able to perform every single day like there's probably not a practice that goes by where she's not asking me to watch watch some aspect of her game of her form or for footwork something like that like am I doing this correctly is my timing on is it off whatever it is so she's very intentional about how she's training because she knows that it's going to translate into the game she is very very

efficient.

She doesn't make a ton of errors.

And you know, she just does a really good job handling the ball.

One thing that kind of goes unstatted about her that I really, really like is she takes care of a lot of the in between plays.

So a lot of times teams will send free balls over to the short right front zone to kind of create some chaos tight to the net.

You know, if the other team has been out of system or whatever, and they're just trying to send a bailout shot over, usually you send it short.

And so you can kind of disrupt some of the offense there.

But Maddie does a really good job of controlling

the chaos in that short zone, sending up really nice easy passes to our setter with a lot of control and is able to transition well.

So she does a lot of stuff, um, obviously with the ball, but then off the ball as well that keeps us calm, keeps us organized.

Um, she's, she's just very good all around.

And in the spring, she decided to learn how to pass like server sieves and she's been passing dimes.

So, um, we do have an army of defensive specialists that are probably going to sub in for her across the back row, but you know, we, I think longterm we're working towards a six rotation option for her.

Welcome back everybody.

Jake Condon here joined by head coach Brett Gervais entering his seventh year as the Lakeland double head coach here and just wanted to quickly go over last season and talk about what happened last year.

You went seven and two in the regular season wound up winning your first playoff game took down a powers north central often a really big title contender in the championships for your division lost to Felton North Dickinson in your regional final but still a top eight finish in division two.

So was there like a big moment or a singular highlight last year that you think

really stood out to you in

your six.

You know, I feel like early on week one was huge and we didn't know it at the time how big it was But you know, we were playing against the state runner-up Dickinson was so good all year.

They went undefeated the only game they lost was their last one So I think week one we were tested early on and it allowed us to really look at the tape and figure out What do we need to switch?

Where do the pieces need to be in order to be successful for the rest of the year?

And so it really helped us and I think that's important to have a really tough

you know, first week, second week, early in the year.

So you're battle tested and you know exactly what you have as the year goes on.

So that was a big week for us.

And then obviously I like our strength to schedule the last few years.

We play tough teams and the league that we play in, the conference for the Great Lakes eight is really tough.

Yeah.

If you look at across the state of Michigan, who's finishing in the top four for division one and two in Michigan,

lot of teams are from the UP.

So

We've been happy with that, that we're playing high competitive football.

And so, you know, teams like North Central that they're always a threat and they're always scheming things up.

Even last year, you know, we didn't even get a chance to play Crystal Falls Forest Park.

So I wasn't particularly happy that we had a buy, you know, and that's tough for that program there.

But it's always good to play somebody,

you know,^?

so that you're trying new things, you're getting better so that if you're

Um, fortunate enough to make the playoffs that you can at least, um, have the best shot possible.

Absolutely.

I think this season you are playing everybody in your conference if I remember correctly.

Yep.

Yep.

And they restructured, I think a lot of it so that a lot of the teams out east are now a part of a different conference, but I think it's great.

I think our strength of schedules, uh, phenomenal this year.

That was something I did want to ask about is you haven't actually played anything since the 2019 season.

Uh, there was a lot of history between these two teams back when they were both playing 11 man football, but since the shift to eight VA for a lot of the local teams.

You haven't been able to run into this team in the past seven years, actually.

So this is your first line matchup against them as head coach.

I don't know how much you've actually been able to get exposed to their lineup, see what they're all about.

But is there anything in particular that you've seen that stands out to you?

Yeah, the biggest thing is their offensive set.

When you watch their offensive set, that's a swimming football.

They do exactly the things that they were doing back when they were winning state titles under Coach Olson.

There's a lot of consistency with the things that they're doing and their teaching.

And even though last year didn't pan out as well for them, you know,

there^?

was a lot of games where they were in them.

And even against some really powerful teams that made runs last year,

They weren't getting blown out like anybody else was they were in those football games You know even week night against Pickford.

It's a game at halftime and so I think that they're a hungry football team They have a ton of pride in what they're doing with their program And so I think that it's really smart by them to stick to their guns and do what they know And so that that's the first thing that I noticed with them and I was actually on the staff back when we played them an 11-man football

In the playoffs in our last year of 11 man and that was a tough game You know I learned that was my first time in ishmaning for a game and they just had a really tough team that year and I learned more about ishmaning football and just that two hours that we were out there that I could read about or hear about so I think it's it's a really good thing that we're facing them again and a Program that I think that they take a lot of pride in it.

So We're lucky to be be able to play them week one

Well, take a look at your roster, too.

I mean, you have a lot of seniors coming into this lineup, a lot of big players.

The Oxford twins, excuse me, all entering their 12th grade year.

Josh Davatella on your roster as well.

Do you think that there are any players that you expect to take a really big jump this year going into maybe their senior season?

Maybe they're just really looking to make a big leap over the offseason?

Yeah, the three captains that we have right now with Tyler Axford and Josh Davitella and Brady Axford, they were all in in the offseason and so I'm hoping that they take the senior step.

They already had leadership qualities last year so I know that they can lead the team but I want to see them be more consistent with being dominant and I think I've tried to hold them to that standard and push them in the offseason the last seven, eight months.

Other guys Blake Lebo had a really good offseason and is going to play quarterback for us now Last year he did a really nice job under center.

I'm just not so sure he was fully ready for it You know to endure the entire season So now he prepared himself really well to take that roll on and really flourish in it and the same thing for him on defense You know, he's going to slide in and play on defense for us.

So I'm excited to see what he can do

Charlie Hanell, he's gonna play center for us and he got reps last year at center kind of splitting time So now we're asking a lot of him.

So I think he's due up for a big performance and then finally Lucas Axford, okay?

He's the other triplet with Tyler Brady.

He's a guy that missed a lot of football early on because of injuries I think he's ready for his final like breakout.

He's doing really well Everybody's noticing him a lot more and I think that he's prepared a lot in the offseason get himself faster and more prepared for football

Because he's a track star too, so it's hard to pick and choose with all these sports that these guys play.

All right,

and then one last question for you, just if you know that a team sees you on their schedule, if they know that they have you on their radar, what do you want other teams to think about like Lindenhubble football?

I want them to be thinking it's going to be a physical battle.

I want them to be thinking the same thing I think when I see Ishweming, you know, where I'm thinking they're going to bring it up front.

And if you don't have your crap together on the defensive line or on your offensive line, you're not winning the trenches.

You're in trouble.

Okay.

The other, you know.

the deep passes and all the fancy stuff that you want to talk about that that's fine to worry about a team in like an air raid offense and stuff but I want people to look at us and say upfront they have their crap together and they're going to bring it it's going to be a physical four quarters and we better buckle up.

I'm hoping that that's what our team is able to bring this year.

How are you trying to stay in close games going into this

Well, we're bringing back a more mature group, so hopefully that makes a difference.^?

Again, for those of you just joining us, Lake Lindenhubble versus Ishpeming today.

The lakes won the toss and deferred, choosing to play defense first today.

Hematites, excuse me, will receive.

Looks like both teams are getting ready to Prepare for the national anthem as they take the sidelines here Reverie crew unfortunately.

I don't have any of their names ready today But sitting near midfield getting ready for the game to start as well chain crew out there The stands filling up quite nicely for this game As the clock hits zero believe we'll start the national anthem and then get this game underway

Unfortunately, it sounds like our audio channel not working for the national anthem as the players get ready, but introductions on the field are getting started now.

These teams have faced off three times before, at least in the recorded history I was able to find.

Ishpeming wins all three.

Two of those matchups came in 2019 in opening week of

in 11 on 11 football season for both of these teams where Ishman won I believe 36 to 34.

Then later on they won a playoff game I believe for the district championship in the 2019 season.

Both teams very good that season but the hematites able to prevail and advance further in the playoffs in that season.

Technically the home team here, but neither playing in a stadium that's very familiar got a chance to talk to some of the Lake Lindenhovel staff before the game started I don't believe any of them have had the chance to play a game here with the lakes before Hematite set up ready to return as the lakes get into formation Getting ready to return for the Hematites.

And here comes the kick from Axford and we are underway.

High school football going here in Houghton.

The return from the Hematites breaks a tackle and going to go down taken down at about the 35 yard line.

The fans here excited to see the season get underway as the offensive unit takes the field for the

Gauthier lined up next to number 14 Dax Cackery once again Both leaning in like they were gonna take the snap it's a fake Gauthier trying to push through the line and it looks like he's going to be stopped that is no good So missing the two-point conversion are the ishpaming hematites after the quick touchdown and now keep the score at 6-0 in favor of ishpaming

Lakes took the gamble there, chose to defer the kickoff, sending the hematite to the ball.

And in just two plays, Ishpeming makes them pay with a very early touchdown.

10.57 on the clock, six to nothing in favor of Ishpeming.

As the Lakes coaching staff tries to get ready to receive this kickoff and get the offense going, need to respond early.

Again, this is eight on eight football.

Score can quickly get out of hand.

So the lakes want to make sure that they keep close to the hematites here while they are down.

Hematites ready to kick the ball and send it back towards the lakes as they get ready for their first run.

And it will be number five, Keon Gauthier again.

He's been everywhere and doing everything so far today.

That really didn't go very far at all.

It looked like an attempt to quickly get another possession back on the lakes, but it was quickly whistled dead by the officiating crew here.

And we're gonna see another onside kick, but it's quickly recovered and the lakes will maintain possession.

I think what happened on that first onside kick attempt is it was immediately dribbled into the ground.

That was the only difference that I saw.

That second onside kick lofted quite a bit more into the air.

I didn't notice anything wrong with either formation during that time.

But now the lakes take the field.

And we now see Brady Axford lined up as the running back behind Blake Lebo, excuse me, number one.

And it's a direct snap.

Brady Axford breaks one off.

He's going to gain about five yards.

He is met at the outside by number 11 for Lake Linden.

That's going to be Ben Meyer.

And it will be second down.

And the officiating crew will call it second and four.

Lakes started this drive in very favorable position due to the onside kick.

They started with the ball at the hematite 45-yard line, now sitting at the hematite 39.

Ishpeming ahead, six to nothing.

Lakes want to score and keep this drive going.

I believe that was a hold.

It was called on the hematites.

And yeah, they're gonna get backed up ten yards.

This is gonna be a long fourth down play all of a sudden.

At least for the moment, the offensive unit appears to still be out on the field.

Haven't seen any substitutions and that was a hold on offense.

That explains why... ...Kakuri was able to break off the line so cleanly.

And now fourth in about eleven and a half.

As the quarterback takes the snap wide receiver screen Tyler Axford takes it gets past one man But it's tackled quickly a gain of about five yards on the wide receiver screen and that will result in a second down and short Or second down on about five Lakes I'm sure would be happy to just take some time off the clock slowly move down the field here They can keep picking up five or six yards of play I'm sure they'd be happy to do so

as the teams head back to the line of scrimmage.

Now seeing, I believe that's number 10, Alfred Milky lined up as a fullback, and he's going to be a blocker there for Axford.

Axford snakes back up the middle, gets past almost every single player, just the safety remaining.

who gets the tackle and saves the touchdown for the Hematites.

Brady Axford saw a hole to cut back inside.

That was supposed to be a half-back toss, but takes advantage of the opening in the line.

He fakes the handoff to Brady, fakes the handoff to Josh, and in that time rolls out to his right, finds Brady.

Axford opened down the field after the fake handoff, gains nine or sorry about five yards on that play.

Gonna be third down and one now for the lakes sitting at the 16 yard line.

Again this score still tied six to six four and a half minutes left in the first quarter.

Handoff goes to Josh Davitella and he's gonna break past the line gain about six yards and it's gonna be first and goal on the eight yard line.

As it looks like where the chain crew is gonna place it.

A very nice offensive drive here.

Consistently earning yards on every play, broken off a few for 10 or 15.

I want to make sure I get that right.

A lot of really good players in this program have come from Hubble.

It's tempting to shorten it to Lake Linden Lakes, have the nice quick alliterative name, but Hubble a very important part of this school's heritage.

He's gonna gain about two yards, third in goal from either the two or three yard line.

In that goal line situation, you'd think they're gonna use Josh Davatella's size just to try to send something right up the middle against this hematite defense.

But we've seen a lot of variety in both offensive schemes so far in this game.

Lakes line up, Lebo once again under center, Davatella in it full back, Axford at the half back.

Lebo takes the snap, going to Axford, keeps it himself, the nice fake handoff.

I didn't even see it up from the press box, but a nice read option there.

In that interview that we had earlier on the broadcast, Coach Gervais was talking up all three of his captains, so far they're all making big impact plays as needed.

Davatella takes the snap, runs up the middle, breaks through the defensive line, but is met by the linebackers of the hematites and gonna gain about six yards.

Lakes have no reason to speed this up, take as much time off the clock as they'd like here.

About 8 minutes and 30 seconds to go in this second quarter.

Lakes will also get the ball to start the second half after choosing to defer on kickoff.

Lebo takes the snap, pitches it over to Brady, Axford, and Axford finds his brother Lucas wide open in the end zone for the touchdown.

Not quite a Philly special based on the formation, but Brady spent enough time taking snaps at quarterback that I think I'm allowed to be reminded of Nick Foles.
