to share.
Well, Bill, our theme today is in the high school football.
But before we get going, I got a neat notification from Patrick Dwyer, Climate Athletic Director.
And I shared it last night, Bill.
You might have seen it for their football game, one of their signature games.
I get on my schedule every year, September 11th against Nagani.
They arrange a Black Hawk flyover, military first responders.
appreciation night what a neat story that kelly mack has put together especially for one of the marquee football games in the u p every year the ganiak kelly mack join us at agacy field september eleven seven p.m.
for the game against the gani they'll be showing our appreciation the military and first responders with the blackhawk helicopter flyover provided by the miskin army national guard at the pretty neat jester bill and uh... unfortunately i'll be in green bay for another appointment but i can't come back when i check that
We'll be covering that game with Jay Kano and we'll be out at a bullpen for me.
It's a pretty neat gesture by Cali made, especially with the military helping bring in a helicopter, correct?
Oh, it's great news.
I did read that yesterday.
It's a really exciting addition to Cali made football game.
It should be a great night.
And especially when you look at the matchup, that's one of the marquee matchups every year in the U.P.
Nagani is division five this year.
Unfortunately, or unfortunately, Cali made
That's the business six again.
Besides Gladstone, they're the only to business six team in the U.P.
In climates loaded this year and more likely a playoff team.
And I think their goal is to get at best seven and two in the whole home game.
That could be a fun football game to watch and you add in and add in the extra activities with the Black Hawk military flyover if for those who never seen one of those Black Hawk helicopters are absolutely majestic bill they are
Also nice gestures.
I think it's 25 years since the September 11th right the event of the attack on the World Trade Center So it's kind of tied in a lot of thinking on that one.

Well bill speaking of high school football you dug up from the from the archives which you have
which our bottom list I might not add.
Oh, by the way, folks, next Tuesday, Sean Beligian from Woodward Sports and State Champs will join us in a week from today at Holden High School Athletic, Director Rob Fay will join us to talk about the opening high school sports season not only in football.
But, Bill, you dug deep into the archives.
You're going to explain, obviously, we know high school football.
It's a nine-week season.
It's a tradition.
obviously it's such a short season but you went way back with some history way back when
with copper country high school football years gone by i'm actually which i usually i'm excited to hear your stories bill but that's what i'm really captivated with i got a double cup of coffee for this one so what was so let's hear about it
i read you say it went way back i would like to find out what high school football actually started in michigan and it was uh... in the eighteen eighty and uh... how and i would and i would like to call me now and i would play here was one of the earliest diversity football programs
started in 1885.
Now, high school football and UPE dates back to the mid 1890s.
What I found is Marquette, Nagana, and Ishmael had teams in 1894.
Calumet, Hancock, and Houghton had teams in 1895.
And so, you know, fierce rivalries, Houghton, Hancock, Calumet, Hancock, Nagana, Marquette, and Nagana, and Ishmael, just fierce rivalries at the time.
And really, I came across an interesting little item here that you'll enjoy.
It's a story from 1890s.
1996 is the early season report on the Calumet High School team.
The team's average weight was 140 pounds, and they were looking to fill their schedule, and they wanted games against teams who do not average more than 150 pounds.
So kind of an interesting story to be, and really Calumet and Hancock started playing in 1895 and had games in 1896.
Old Hancock, I think in 1896 they started playing and within a few years a few of the teams were playing.
Hancock and Launce played in 1909 and Todd Matt Liggett-Linden was 1925 when they started playing.
Blake Linden really seemed to be pretty big in basketball in the 1910s.
More digging to find out the stories of those.
And really in the early 1900s there were games against Bessermer, Escanaba,
ironwood uh... ishman and uh... monomony role teams at the whole handcock teams played at the time and it really it kind of interesting to kind of look at in the mid eighteen ninety local downstate writers would select them uh... political state champion based on teams with on the field records and and uh... how they did it with others doing so in eighteen ninety four of the top high school
program in the state was Detroit Central High School.
And among the top teams in that early era was Ann Arbor and Grand Rapids Central.
And then in 1899, there was an official championship game between, that was organized by the University of Michigan and the Michigan High School Athletic Committee, had a game in Ann Arbor on Thanksgiving weekend.
They would select the two best teams.
to play in a state championship game.
And really, Bishping had one of the top teams won in 1900, 1901, 1902, 1905, and Escanaba had one of the state championship in 1904.
And then that kind of disappeared after 1908.
The game never took place.
I've got a story about Houghton in the 1909 game shortly.
Now, 1909, the Michigan Inter-School Collegiate Inter-School
Association formed and they set rules for eligibility for for high school football and that became the MHSAA in 1924 and then in the early 1930s they actually have decided in several sports
to have UP championships and lower-principle championships.
And it wasn't until the late 40s that they combined for some state championships.
And in 1995, they started the current football playoff system to determine the state champion.
And, you know, several divisions.
Now we've got, what, eight divisions in 11 men, a couple divisions in eight men.
Eight-man football started 15 years ago.
And that seems to be growing.
So I did cover some interesting stuff from the early years of football.
There was a half back for Hancock High School.
His name was Leon Brown.
He died from injuries in a game against Talumet in October 1906.
He was kicked above the heart and on the head during the game, and he never would gain consciousness.
He was 18 years old at the time.
It was the first death related to football in Michigan, in Michigan High School football.
kind of a tragic story at the time.
Joe Linder, he was the outstanding running back for Hancock High School in the early 1900s, and he went on to quite a career in hockey.
He moved on to Duluth, and he's actually in the U.S.
Hockey Hall of Fame.
We've talked about Joe before, but he was an outstanding running back for Hancock High School in the early 1900s.
I said, I'll come back to the 1909, Hancock or Hogan football team was undefeated.
They defeated history and the nominate to become the U.P.
championship that year.
They hoped to play in Ann Arbor for a state championship.
Ann Arbor was the lower peninsula champ, but apparently there was not enough money available for the game.
So neither team could afford to, Hogan couldn't afford to travel down to Ann Arbor for the game and Ann Arbor didn't have enough money to
even host the game.
The coach of the Houghton team at the time was Carlos Haig.
He was a star player at Houghton High School for a few years in the early 1900s.
And in 19, he was 22 years old when he coached the Hentoc or the Houghton High School team.
They also played hockey for Houghton High School.
He was a member of the 1913-40s late team.
It was the U.S.
amateur hockey championship.
And Haig would later coach at Michigan Tech.
And his family owned
eight jewelry in downtown Houghton for years.
Several high school and football players played in Notre Dame.
We talked about some of them already because they were also hockey players.
Hump Anderson, OJ Land, Larson, Beck Garvey, Percy Wilcox, all played hockey at Notre Dame, but they also played football at Notre Dame.
And the famous guy out of the Lorian George Gip, he never played high school football, but he sure became famous.
He got to Notre Dame as a baseball player, but he sure became famous as he running back for the fighting Irish.
There's also, at that time, there's also community football teams.
They get us away from high school, but they played Nagani and other
teams in the M.U.P.
And one of the teams included Doc Gibson and a few others that also played hockey in the Capricountry.
The Portuguese leg team won the U.P.
Championship there, and they beat Nagani.
So the other person that remember that team was Herman Gunlock Sr., so he was a member of that kind of community football team.
he was one of the outstanding football player of the Canada and he played football at the Detroit College of Medicine.
Everybody in the hot copper 93 knows about Doc Gibson.
There's only been, I guess really one, remember the number of copper country teams that have won state football championships, like Lyndon won in 1992 and 1997.
There's been a few UP teams that have won state championships since they started at the state championship by the MHSAA.
Fish and Rain has won five 11 man championships.
Menominee has won four, Crystal Falls has won three, and we said Lake Linden's won a couple.
Eight men, it started in 15 years ago, and North Central Powers has won five times, and Crypto Falls has won a couple of times.
Last year, Menominee won the 11-man championship in division seven or eight.
but exciting for monomony.
So just kind of a quick rundown.
There's lots of stories to be uncovered about those early years of Copper Country football, but it seems like a fun research area to get in that.
Who knows?
I may be digging in that.
Those stories more, Jimmy, but tell me some cool stuff to try and uncover for us.
Especially Bill on retrospect, you mentioned the high school playoffs.
We've got about four minutes left here, by the way.
That changed over the years.
I remember those powerful Hancock teams that Coach Salani had missed getting into playouts by a whisker.
This wasn't based on where there's all kinds of computer numbers.
They were packed and unpacked in one of the best teams grown up by ever seen.
Then they went to the playoff format.
Six wins on a nine game schedule.
You're in five games on an eight game schedule.
You're in automatically.
uh... recent years a lot of teams are loading up the cream puff schedules once they get out of the conference now that doesn't guarantee you a playoff spot anymore straight to schedule they've got more back to the analytic system
but a little bit more complicated where i don't understand that at all but six wins does not guarantee you a playoff spot a morning eleven player football uh... six wins in the eleven or eight player football or five wins on a nine on a eight game schedule it helps but a lot of people have gotten uh... they kind of want to get away from that based on a lot of people get soft schedules automatically qualify for the playoffs it was one and done in a hurry but one quick question bill for you before you get going do you know back in the day of
Where are the connection?
Again, we got about two minutes left here, okay?
Where did the connection start with Notre Dame and Calumet?
That's a question I'd been asked before.
Was there some sort of pipeline there or something with all those Calumet athletes going to Notre Dame?
One of the things they did was when George Dick went down there, you know, he recruited a baseball player and they discovered him and ended up on the high school on the football team.
And he really kind of suggested, oh, you may want to take a look.
other guys like Hulk Anderson, Earl J. Larson were outstanding high school football players.
So it's really, the exact year probably, oh, late eight, 1910s.
I think it was 1918, I think, is when 19...
17 somewhere around there and but there was kind of there a couple bank baseball players that that got down there and George get with the connection and and said well you should start to look at some of these guys and some of these guys were recruited say it on scene to come down and play based on George gets recommendation so and that first first game that if one of the first teams he played on was was a Cori Lamble and that tradition the story a while ago was how to tell you that football players or hockey players
got the Packers kicked out of poor football.
We talked about a few years ago, but that's that's kind of a good story is, uh, and then, uh, uh, all these guys, the Hulk Anderson and O.J.
Lewis and, uh, Garvey, Percy Wilcox all played on the foot on the hockey team.
And they actually played, uh, in Calumet in, uh, 19, 19, uh, 21 when, uh, Notre Dame played, uh,
uh, the
Michigan College of Mines in their first season.
Um, and, uh, then it was around that time.
that they were suspended before because they ended up playing against four of the Packers.
So that's a whole other story.
We may have to unpack that one again for us all, but it's kind of a fun story.
As I said, Rick, a couple of articles on how two Calumet hockey players got the Green Bay Packers kicked out of pro football.
Yeah, and we had that story before, but that's very intriguing.

Well, we're on the Hudson River next week, so we'll stop in at the West Point, and see all the wealthy mansions along the Hudson River.
It's a major transportation route in the late 1800s, and that was the wealth of New York City, and so it should be fun to explore on the American cruise line.

I know he'll give you a little bit of education on how to respect the river.
You know, the Wisconsin River, quite honestly, when you're on that river, it's beautiful.
I've gone, Jim Hyer takes me, we go out fishing every September.
And that's, you know, that is the first sturgeon and that's an experience in itself.
But to kayak, or I'm sorry canoe, the Wisconsin River, we really encourage folks at any time on that river, make sure you have your life.
Preserver on.
I will mention too, there are a couple big things happening here in the greater Richland area all weekend.
The murder mystery weekend, the Crime Stoppers is having.
That starts tomorrow night with pre-registration at the A.D.
German warehouse, but then that's Saturday and Sunday.
The visitor center is the headquarters for that.
If you really enjoy watching Dateline or 2020 and you're always guessing I was the husband or it was this, this is a chance for you to really go out and
interrogate or just interview the suspects.
and kind of get the clues and see if you can figure out who done it and also for a good cause because it supports crime stoppers and then on Sunday at two o'clock at the Phoenix Center they do the reveal they also have a lot of prizes so I'd encourage folks that they consider that and then on Sunday I I'll I'll get a reminder if I don't say this on Sunday they are dedicating the auditorium stage to Betty Hayes Baxter and Betty is an icon she holds the Guinness
book of world records.

I learned this yesterday.
She holds the Guinness Book of World Records for the longest serving dancing teacher.
She started, I believe, when she was 17 or 16 years old when she moved from Milwaukee to Blue River.
I'd really encourage folks two o'clock on Sunday, if you're available, go to the auditorium.
If anybody deserves some recognition, no doubt, Betty Hayes does for sure.
So and then the branding is got a lot going on.
So they they had their time.
They had their little respite.
And now they're ready to go Friday night.
As always, you can expect
one of the best fish fries around there.
There are other really good ones that would contend as well.
But the branding iron, they do a great job with their fish fry.
A lot of folks like like going up there for that.
I know they have poor man's lobster and jumbo shrimp too.
So if you know, you're not a big Atlantic cod person, you can or they have walleye too, I should say.
But you can also get the fish or the lobster poor man's lobster or jumbo shrimp.
So and then on Saturday they're having their wood fired pizzas.
We've talked about that quite a bit.
I know you and I both fans of pizza and I know we've talked in the past about some of the different variations they offer.
One of them is a veggie Alfredo.
So it's roasted corn, zucchini, mushroom, onion, tomato, Alfredo sauce with a borzon herbed cheese.
I might try that.
That one's, I'm looking for the meat in it, don't feel like.
I struggle without any.
Well,
Throw them on the pizza.
I always got some sausage, usually in my back pocket.
They also have a margarita pizza very typically, too, that folks like a lot.
But anyway.
That's Saturday up at the branding iron August on this coming Saturday.
And then Sunday is a big day up there as well because Don Greenwood will be there on Sunday, August 23rd from one to four o'clock with their open mic.
And then Steve fearing he's going to be making his baby back ribs, which I've had outstanding.
Steve knows how to cook and the open mic along with ribs.
It actually opens at noon.
Food starts at noon.
and the entertainment starts at one o'clock, one to four.
So that's always a very enjoyable time.
There is.
I didn't even mention there's other live music in town this weekend at the 80 German warehouse on Friday.
I know English prairie distillery has live music on Saturday night.
I don't want anyone, if somebody comes up to me and says, there's nothing to do, I will probably throw a fit.
There is a lot going on this weekend and we're in August, which sometimes I've seen in the past, August was maybe a little bit slower as folks were getting ready for school year and a change in seasons, but not true.
There's a lot going on.
Yeah, you know, go, go to.

So the water levels are great and not high and not low, just about where you want it.

I don't know how we got there, but that's the problem with having a guy with a little bit of ADHD on with you.
