River Valley coach Jane Breel joins us.

Jane, did you get ready for this point in the season?

Where have you seen improvement with the Blackhawks here over the last several weeks?

Well, I guess it kind of depends on the games that we look at.

I think there's been some improvement in our communication and when we're on the field defensively.

We're still making some physical mistakes, but our mental mistakes have been held to a minimum, which is good.

I think that that is the starting point for us to be able to build off of.

But offensively, throughout the year, I guess I was very pleased at how much our hitting was improving.

In the last couple ball games, we've been held to a lower number of hits as a team.

But still being able to put some hits up on the board, the thing is we need to put them together.

So we've got to put some hits together.

And the fact that we've lost like five conference games by one or two runs is it's a little bit deflating for them.

But we keep talking about you have to work at getting better so that by the time tournament time comes, you're able to do the things that we know that we can do.

You had a couple of big wins and, you know, in the conference, I look at, you know, you played a role in the conference at the end there.

You had a big win over a priority

sheet.

We, we, yep.

We, we, we shut them out and, and, you know, our pitching was stellar and, and we were able to put some runs on the board.

So, um, when, when our pitching really steps up for us and those kids continue to hit their spots and their locations, it is not easy for teams to beat us.

And I think we've done that a lot.

So even the games that we've lost by one or two runs, they weren't easy wins for those teams in the conference.

And on any given night, I truly believe that we can beat any team in our league.

Now I know Platteville or Dodgerville, rather, just beat us.

But I still think we can beat Dodgerville.

Obviously, we did beat Dodgerville.

And that knocked them down a little bit from the conference.

If they, you know, put them in second, they could have been chasing first place if we don't beat them.

So yeah, there's some things that, you know, we've done.

We've just let too many runs out on the bases to be able to win those games.

And actually, what I've been saying most of the year is that if we don't beat ourselves,

we certainly are capable of beating other teams.

And by beating ourselves, I mean, we, we put up way too many errors in, in most of our ball games.

And that's where we've got to, we've got to limit

that.

Jane, just to get a home game in the playoffs, that's an accomplishment, isn't it?

Well, it is.

You know, last year we had to go on the road on that Thursday night and go play Westby.

So tomorrow night, having a home game against Partyville is good.

You know, our seed, we were the seventh seed.

We probably could have been anywhere from four to eight in the seeding.

So I was not disappointed.

I don't think there was any reason that we should have been

a six-seat or anything higher based off of the teams that have beaten us and the records of the other teams.

So, yeah, I think, you know, our next goal is to get that 10th win to try to get double digits in the win column.

So, you know, it's little things and just try to keep improving the program.

And we are one of the only teams around here that have played 25 games in the regular season.

And 26 is the highest we can play.

So I do think that, yeah, man, we have 16 losses, but we've played 25 games.

And so if we cut back and don't play some of those teams, we might not have those losses.

But we might not be as good as we are right now either.

So it's twofold.

And I just think that playing against some of those better teams are what's going to make us better.

What do you know about Partyville, Jane?

Well, I don't know a whole lot about Partyville.

I know that they dealt with WIAA issues, and their head coach is no longer with them, so they have an interim coach.

And a couple of their wins that they had ended up having to be forfeits based on some discipline that was handed down by the WIAA with just, I think, a miscommunication and a misunderstanding of

Coaching in different places and whatnot.

So I don't know the whole story there But I think that they're better than their record shows

how many seniors do you have this year gene?

We have five total seniors four of them are able to play We've got one who's been out most of the year with an ACL injury

little bit unstable to be able to, to, you know, be effective, maybe on the field for us, but has been around and been a huge part of, of who we are and what we've done.

And, um, yeah, so we've got four of four seniors that are playing and, um, you know, they'll definitely be a loss to us when the season ends.

And hopefully the later, the better for us.

Right.

What's your opinion about softball this year, the level of play and, you know, some of the tournaments and some of the other schools that you've seen outside the conference.

I do believe that, you know, our conference was very, very even, a lot of very even teams, you know.

Rich and Center's pitching is at a much higher caliber than most of the teams in the league.

But the hitting end of it, like, we've got so many great hitting teams in our league and teams that are putting runs up against them.

And then you go and you face other teams, division two teams in tournaments, and those teams help to make you better so that you can even play better in your conference play.

I do think the caliber of the game has drawn up, and I think that we don't have as many pitching

out, um, standouts as what we have in the past, maybe, but, um, we've definitely got some, some good play going on all the way around us.
