River Valley soccer team is at Galena.

They're doing battle today after a game last night as well for Galena.

They were winners against Richland Center.

Riverdale Baseball is at Southwestern and Softball for Riverdale is at home against New Lisbon for a non-conference event.

And it's also baseball and softball for Richland Center at River Valley coming up this afternoon here on WRCO.

River Valley Coach Matt Bacum joins us.

Coach, how's the team been

playing?

It's been a mixed bag.

We're four and six right now.

Pitching and defense have been phenomenal.

Right now we're sitting with a sub three teammate.

The challenge has been hitting.

We're struggling to hit the ball consistently and put together a bit at bat.

Having said that, we put up 23 runs on Riverdale last night.

So baseball will baseball.

So I'm hoping that the second half, the talent is there.

It just needs to be realized in the games

on the offensive side of things.

You've had some good ones, Matt.

I know the Dodgeville game was a tremendously close game.

Must

have been a quick game that night.

Very quick.

Yeah, it was one zip, top of the six.

We had our chances and just couldn't cash in.

They have a great team and a great top of their rotation.

We've been with everybody.

We've seen the entire conference now, and I feel confident saying that I'm not scared of anybody.

And I think, you know, defending it by the way the ball bounces, we can play with everybody.

And I think we demonstrated that while also going under 500 the first round.

So I think it's a competitive conference.

And whoever has that slim margin of error that night probably goes home with a victory, including our central center.

We played them pretty close until some of their errors the first time around kind of shifted things our way.

They've got talent, too.

So it's going to be a fun second

half.

Yeah, this is the second half because you played in the first game of the conference season.

Some things you're going to have to improve on the second half.

I guess you've talked about some of those.

But what are you going to do to make strides and maybe make a run here?

I think, again, it's putting together a consistent bat, competitive innings on offense, and then just limiting the stakes.

For the most part, our defense has been pretty solid.

But sometimes in those critical moments, we fumble it.

And that has been the difference in those one-run games, two-run game at Lancaster.

So just taking care of our own business.

And if a team comes in and beats us, so be it.

But I haven't seen a lot of teams with an overall talent package that just blows us out of the water.

So taking care of our own business is going to be the biggest thing that we need to keep doing.

And who are you going to pitch tonight?

We're going to start with Keegan-Heiser, and then kind of go with Quincy Blakely.

We've kind of built that two-headed monster.

for conference games.

They both pitch real well.

Quincy's got a sub one.

He's got a sub one five.

So they've both been really pitching well.

They've kept us in games.

And so I'm hopeful tonight that keeps going and they give better some fit.

Ryan, you get into this week.

It's another big week for the Hornets, isn't

it?

Yeah, it is second time through a conference opponent.

So, you know, we've been focused on getting better every day.

We're battling some arm arm injuries.

So that's kind of messed with our rotation a little bit and kind of baby in guys through to make sure we're healthy and we're not going to risk further injury.

But yeah, certainly, you know, we go to Valley tonight and then we've got.

I think the last time you

played River Valley, you know, they picked up the win, but I believe that the team felt it didn't play as well as it could have in that game.

Was that the case?

Yeah, that's exactly it.

That's kind of been the trend this season, right?

We feel like we haven't really put a full.

Full game together yet and all fast into the game and I that that's coming and we all have faith that it's coming and.

and the boys have bought in and that's coming and we're going to do that.

But we just need to not get ahead of ourselves and take things one pitch at a time, one out at a time, one inning at a time and put a full game together.

Yeah, it appears that you're in a lot of games all of a sudden you got like one bad inning or one bad out or whatever and it seems like that's been kind of costly lately, hasn't it?

Yeah, for sure.

You know, we've kind of stressed all season long at this point.

Again, I mentioned we had some arms.

problems but you know we haven't had a good outing on the pitchers mounted a while and we finally got one on Saturday in our tournament and then our offense goes quiet so it's been kind of that you know back and forth what's going to show up what's not going to show up but it has been the one bad inning that's hurt us but at the same time you know it's not necessarily like our offense is

is really thriving.

So we've got to just take things, like I said, one pitch at a time and build some confidence and understand these games that we've been in are all winnable baseball games.

And they all could have gone the other way.

We haven't been blown out other than one.

And that was an anomaly within itself, I believe.

So we're in a good spot.

We've got to get back on the field and play some games and get the win column here.

Who's been hitting the ball well for you this season?

And we got two guys that are really standing out right now.

And it's Isaac Gould and Logan Peterson.

At times, there's a lot of good contact.

And the game of baseball is funny, where you can hit the ball really hard right at somebody.

And then the next at bat, you can have the weakest ground ball that you couldn't roll out into a better spot for a base knock.

But these two guys have been consistently driving the baseball all over the field.

So they'll be in the heart of our lineup again and will be for the foreseeable future and just hoping for them to keep rolling and other guys to follow suit with them tonight.

You had the night off last night as far as the game was concerned, so it's all hands on deck for tonight, I assume.

Yeah, all hands on deck, all pitchers in the bullpen right of rock.

So we're in a really good spot.

We feel, I'm excited for it.

Again, we got four games this week.

We've got one tonight, one Friday, and then two on Saturday.

So, you know, a lot of baseball to be played yet, but arm-wise, we're in a really, really good spot.

A little chilly, does feel like early April, but it's dry and the teams are good to go.

Keegan-Heiser on the mound for River Valley will be opposed by Wyatt Banker of Richland Center.

And the first batter will be Brady Dosh.

The Hornets Center field is he'll be followed by the left fielder Guy Klinkle.

Also Isaac Gaul at third base hitting third.
