Riverdale Chieftains, off to a 7-3 overall start.

I talked earlier today with coach B.J.

Hinkel.

Right now, compared to last year and stuff, one thing I know we wanted to work on was our offense.

And I think, overall, the girls have been making good contact, even against some good pitchers.

We're still having a few issues with defense, but, you know, it's getting there.

We're just, you know, against the really good hitting teams.

We got to make sure we limit how many

when the extra runners would give them on base, because they're going to continue to hit the ball.

So when they do and they give us helps, we've got to get those.

But yeah, hitting-wise, I think we've been doing pretty well.

You've kept Ithaca on the schedule.

This is kind of an important game for both teams, even though it's non-conference, isn't it?

Yeah, I think so.

Ithaca, you know, they had a really good run there last year and stuff.

And so I think it's just a good, you know, this point in the season, it's good touch for us to see what we can do against the program.

It's had success up there.

And, you know, for them, I'm sure they're looking to see, you know, if they're clicking on all cylinders to going into this last stretch of the season two before tournaments start.

Right now in the conference, so who's leading the pack in the

SWAL?

You know, minimal points right up there.

We just played them last week.

It's tough team.

They hit the ball well.

But again, you know, we just can't give them the errors we gave them.

Fettermore is really strong over there, too.

They hit the ball against us well.

But again, you know, we just

Getting too many at the score was really not an indicator of how, really, how we played all the way through the game.

We just had a few key moments in there where, you know, it kind of pulled away because we had some costly errors at times when we didn't need them.

So, like I say, we're just looking to clean up the defensive side of stuff here, going to this final stretch.

And, you know, keep making good contact with the ball because I think, you know, anytime you can put the ball in play on offense, it just helps you put some room.

As far as leading hitters, who's been leading the way at the plate for the

Chieftains?

Right now, Macy's McKay, our senior, she's been leading the way.

Top up there, we got Josie Adams, we got I.J.

Meese, Freshman.

She's going to be out a couple of games going through a little bit of a concussion protocol, but looking to have her back hopefully by Wednesday.

We'll see how that goes.

Um, yeah, we got a few others that are right in that mix.

You know, they've been like said, we're got a few of them, uh, all over the 300 mark, which is a good, for me, uh, that's just putting the bat on the ball.

You know, like I said, we're putting the put in play, making things happen.

The coach of Ithaca Weston, Brad Lewis talked to us earlier today about his team and its play so far off to a 7-0 start.

We've been hitting the ball well.

The girls are just playing good all around ball in general.

You've had a good start to the conference season.

Why is tonight's game outside the league important for you?

For seating purposes, this year we don't play Royal.

Royal got beat by Riverdale.

I believe it was like 11-9 or 11-8.

And unfortunately, we weren't able to go to Royal's tournament, but Royal would be in our regional or whatever for seating and stuff.

So it would be a big win for us to take down Riverdale and kind of help for the seating purposes.

I talked to you early in the season when you were just getting underway with the co-op, but how's it gone overall so far this year?

The co-op has been really good.

The girls seem to be really getting along together.

It's hard to even look at the team and believe that this is their first year really playing together.

We have three of the Western girls on varsity, two are our normal starters, and they all fit right in.

The chemistry has been really good.

Looks like the team's been hitting the ball pretty well lately.

Is that the case?

Yeah, they've been the girls have been coming out.

And you know, Seneca started out.

Seneca is a pretty good team.

They've got a good infield on Friday.

They started out and scored two runs right away in the first inning on us.

And that's only two runs they scored.

But we bounced back in the bottom the first and scored four runs on them.

So we were able to take the lead in the same inning.

Wow.

So that's, is that maybe the best game you played this year?

Um, they're the hardest, the toughest team we've played.

Seneca's played us twice.

We beat them 62 and 72.

They have a very, very good infield.

Their pitcher doesn't walk many.

Their outfield is where that kind of lack a little bit, but they're a darn good team.

It seems like it shouldn't be the first of May coming up the end of the week, you know I mean that's why the season goes so fast But I think the weather not being real cooperative this year has kind of made it seem like it's not as late in the season as it is right

Yeah, I would I would agree it I mean it's we were on a stretch right now.

I think this will be our seventh game

with only one practice because we had that we had a game against the Farge couple weeks ago and then we had all that rain where the storms came in and they canceled all the practices and stuff on a Friday and then we had to come back and then we had four games this past week and then we had just practice on Wednesday and and now we're on game two of this week already.

And in the Southwest Conference of Richland Center and River Valley are part of it, they have no

teams with full JV.
