That's not good when you say Friday. It gives you a hope. It's a weekend. It's coming around.

Right now it's clearing crisp and 33 degrees. Beautiful morning. Yeah.
Now spring is three weeks away but we're going to talk about summer now. I believe it's spring is three
weeks away. Love it. Deputy Chief of the Racine Police Department is here. Rick Teller but he's
here not as part of the Racine Police Department. He's here as part of himself and his wife.
And they have something one of pet projects in their lives called the Royal Family Kids Camp.
Before we get into wire here let's talk about the camp and describe to people what it is.
Well good morning. The camp is specially designed to meet the needs of children who are from the
ages of 7 to 11 who have been displaced from their homes. Placing foster care or other out of
home placement and it really provides a chance for these kids to be kids again and some of them
had never had an opportunity to be a kid and we can take them to camp and give them a very positive
week in their life. Yeah you know if you if you not that you've come from privilege or anything
but if you're one of these people that really were able to do things going vacations with your family
and had some money and you know things like that you don't know what it's like not to be able to do
that kind of stuff and that's what's what's great about this. Now where is it? Well we the the
campus held at in Lake Geneva the kids that we take were one chapter in the area we take the kids
from recene and we take them we treat them royally on a coach bus. Wow send them down bring them
down we have our counselors are specially trained to deal with kids with abuse trauma neglect and
the nice thing about this particular camp is for every counselor or for every two children there's
one counselor and so they get very focused attention and occasionally and quite often we will have
a one-on-one counselor to camp or relationship to give the kids the necessary attention and you need
and we call it family camp and part of the the construction of the camp is in is to be family
like so we have grandparents at camp we have aunt and uncle at camp and and they take on these
positions and they really minister to these kids and give them a a sense that they are important
to have value. Good good good what do they do is it I never went to summer camp in my life my
mother you know this is interesting my mother years later when I used to during the summer when I
was a little kid all the other kids were a day camp or summer camp going to wait for the summer
and I was sitting alone with nothing to do during the day and she said well I asked you if you
want to go to summer camp you said no I know why I said no I'm not going to go to the reason I
would but I know why I said no and I'm sorry and you're looking back because these kids used to come
back at five o'clock in the afternoon and say what a day we were up on a canoe we actually built
things we were working on this hmm I feel bad they can go but my mother said I offered you to go
and you said no so mom you should have forced me to do everything else in life want you
forced me to do that so what kind of things they do there when they get there well we start
our morning with the regime of exercise kids get out there that's why I didn't go well not only
getting it gets it's a fun time kids get the dude jumping jack we need to get their blood flowing
and after a good meal the kids have opportunities do many things there's there's fishing and there's
boating we have somebody that volunteers their boat there's woodworking where we have pre fabbed
woodworking project they come in and they pound in a few nails and they come on way with a crib or
a bug box or something of that nature there's programming throughout the day
games and pogo sticks and just we have a rock climbing wall that we bring just a lot of activities
for these kids to do and again the focus is they're getting the one-on-one attention with their
counselors and you know our ratio is we have this year we'll have 60 staff 40 kids 20 girls 20
boys and so the kids really it's life changing for these kids I can imagine and they're coming from
which area predominantly from Racine County okay well that's great and so when does this kick in
what does it when does it start the well the camp we we actually start camp for our counselors
etc and on the 6th of June 16th I'm sorry 16th of June and last through that Friday and this is
we've been doing this now for since 2002 my wife and I have directed camp for the last two years
and prior to that I fulfilled many other positions counselor dean of men and it's just a very
rewarding thing to do we're always seeking volunteers every year and right now we're almost full
staff we're just looking for one counselor one male counselor one female counselor and now when
you during the when they go to sleep and I was like a barracks they're all in the barracks they
get all the boys and the girls are in the other barracks they're they're in a cabin okay there's
about six to eight kids in the cabin and there's a counselor counselors are in the cabin with them
at night they're the counselors get a break and so we bring people who other staff from the camp or
from people will come in who we have vetted everybody gets a background check they'll come in and
they will relieve the camp the counselors for an hour and a half so they can take care of personal
needs and otherwise they're with those kids 20 11 I'm sorry you know for the most of the day so
you know it is so good because a lot of the families I would imagine where these kids come from
can't afford to send to the summer camp I mean it's it's it's expensive to do that and you're
taking care of it for them and one of the reasons you're here is you actually have tickets to auction
for the Bucks Celtics game which is coming up at five serve for them on April 9th we have four
tickets to the Bucks Celtics game and I get this you get to go in through the VIP entrance not
with the rest of that you know the the shaggy bunch goes in you know you're not gonna go into that

to the game excuse me this or she would go in through this is row two seats one through four

summer camp as a kid but I went as a const for many times it's not as fun I think when you're a kid
you don't care about anything your whole goal is to have fun and not care about anything else they
are fun yeah I just never you know and the only I went camping once in my entire life
I went the fifth grade teacher mr. person was his name he took all the boys to bear mountain
you know when that is bear mountain is West Point with the West Point Military Academy isn't bear
mountain so we um we went there now you couldn't do that today because we need to take it only
the boys and the girls don't go no the girls couldn't go so they got fathers in charge of three
four kids and we all went up to bear mountain I had never been camping before now my mother
got a neighbor to give me a napsack because it was a 10 mile hike just to get to the camping site
and my shoulders were killing me it was a bad it was an old napsack I think from world war one
and see I was wearing this thing in my canteen she put grape soda I keep in mind it was hot outside
so everybody else taking a sip of water doing this time I like I'm drinking hot grape soda which
you can imagine with that was tasting like so we get there and they say all right start digging for
water and I you know everybody got a little shovel and we started digging and me and this other guy
dug and the water tasted funny say what you dig they said over there he said that's the bathrooms
over there there's a lean too what are you digging over there for you say well digging all the other
places were taken so we didn't have a tent we just had an napsack you know a sleeping bag and a
rain and we also can wet the next morning and everybody's trying to make fire to cook their breakfast
our father should come on to go into town so we went to the west point into a diner had hamburgers
and coax and french fries breakfast of champions well you know what they and one time we got back
they're still trying to start the fire with wet wood and it wasn't going to work so we ate well
and that was the only time everyone camping in my life but we had a lot of fun you know who was a
10 mile hike each way but we actually went through the woods and the the teachers the teachers the
parents were going through stuff because they were camping people that was the only time everyone
camping in my life and funny what you never forget I never get my shoulders hurting me and I
was what it was fifth grade so 11 years old and not a great time so let me just review people
turning in now we're going to be talking about this every Friday except one I'll watch I'll
mention them anyway during that Friday but this is the royal family kids camp and this is Lake
Geneva and Rick Taylor's here him and his wife help out you have a bunch of other volunteers who
work out as well we do yeah and this is to get kids to a summer camp for a week but they don't have to
worry about the conditions they live in because they're not ideal and so this how do you decide who
which kid to go by the way well the primary focus goes on kids who are on foster care and so
kids who are in foster care okay yeah so we send the we work through human services and recene and
they tend to give us contacts and we try to reach out to those kids we also have you know we have
an on staff social worker who goes out and finds the kids who are most in need and again and our
focus is on kids age 7 through 11 and then after that there's actually hope camp which is the kids
from 12 to 17 and that's also another camp that's provided one they leave us so we don't leave
them hanging and we also have a mentoring club so when we're done with them in camp then we get
to mentor them throughout the school year where we spend one weekend a month and we bring the kids
in and we have essentially a mini camp you know and the thing is these kids are in foster homes
because they're regular homes pretty bad when you're taking out of you know taking away from your
parents but in foster care there's a reason for that because they're mistreated now I am very
lucky I grew up in a leave it to be your house the cleaver family my parents were just fantastic to
my brother and I my brother and I just talked about parents a long gone but we say why did we hit
the pick six in that jackpot you know just to have parents like this because you don't get to
pick your parents and it's unfortunate because a lot of kids are so mistreated I watch an update line
in 2020 you know that kids are so mistreated I keep thinking back to those six kids and I forget
their last name they're more than six and their parents had them chained and locked up into one of
the teenagers got loose that she went on the street corner she'd never been on the street in 16
years and didn't know how to ask for help she just didn't know they said where are you she said I
don't know I'm on a street corner she didn't know anything about they asked her they said are you on
medications because what's medication she just was locked up and chained in that house for 16 years
so it's it's pretty bad out there for some families so these kids again got a week of just
enjoying life being a kid again and it's well worth it so to raise money

I'm doing great then. You're doing great movies are being shown. Everybody wants to go to the movies. The Academy Awards are coming up March 10th and you guys are.
Did you run him yet or are you going to run him this week the 10 nominees for best picture?
Well, we're running our best picture showcase right now. So that you now when the Oscars are playing, we've got all the movies. We've got nine of them actually that are nominated that are running on our screens.
Check them out. You can buy a package. You can buy a passport, which is a four pack to go see them. And then starting tomorrow is the first day of our day one and day two marathon.
So starting tomorrow, we have five of the pictures running in marathon format. And then the following Saturday, you have another five showing in marathon format.
So I guess to tell you there are plenty of ways to see these best picture nominees and go check them out before the 10th of March.
Yeah, because everyone's always saying, well, you know, I didn't see it. I'd show them in theaters. So how am I supposed to see them for that? I'd show them in theaters. Well, now they're showing them in theaters.
So now you can see them because people do complain about that all the time. They say, well, how are you supposed to know what they are?
They don't show them. And in all fairness, some of these pictures are what they call art house movies. So they don't get this wide release.
Like a lot of like Barbie would get a wide release. They don't get that wide release. So it's like some theaters show those art house pictures.
But you guys every every year now give everybody a chance to see some of these movies that they didn't get a chance to see during the year.
Plus when they're first shown, a lot of people don't realize that their good movies are going to be up for Oscar contention.
So they now get a chance to watch them. And one of them's like American fiction. I heard that's supposed to be very, very good.
And I don't remember any theaters playing that movie if they did. There was a short time, but now they're bringing it back.
So you can see it, which is good. Yeah, that movie was kind of released on a platform.
It was released towards the end of the year and into January. It's a spectacular movie starring Jeffrey Wright.
He's a novelist. He's set up with how establishments are property and all black entertainment.
So he writes this just obscene novel as a as a satire and ends up taking off. And that's the whole idea around this comedy drama.
American, American fiction. And I think that's going to win the work for screenplay this year. It is that good.
And I'd recommend anyone go check that one out. Okay, so next week we're going to do our Oscar picks.
I thought we're going to do it this week, but the Oscars have actually the 10th.
Of, um, they're on a Sunday night, the 10th. So on next Friday, we're going to do our Oscar picks.
And the other picture, which you are guys are showing at a regular basis now, poor things, which I heard is supposed to be really good.
Oh, exactly. Emma Stone, obviously she took to come some awards at the Golden Globes.
It took home the award at the Golden Globes. Check out poor things.
It is a it is an already movie. So I'd say that it's for adults.
But that's one that I would say the dark horse when you're looking at the Academy Awards this year.
Everyone thinks, including myself at Oppenheimer is going to win. However, we feed a lot of surprises over the years during that last award.
So don't be too surprised if movie like poor things that sneak in there while I'm going for Oppenheimer.
I'm keep it. I'm keeping the door open there for poor things.
You know, it happens occasionally where you say all it's going to win going to and then they call up another name.
Remember the year they called off the wrong name.
Remember that? Yeah, that was. Yeah, he made a mistake there. Yeah.
Yeah, that was what a mistake to make. And these poor people got up there and they didn't win.
Well, this credit he would they were handed the wrong card. I know.
That was that was this year. So yeah, that was the challenge.
Okay. So the screen actors killed awards were held the other day.
And here they are. Oppenheimer was the best cast in a motion picture.
They came out number one for the best cast best female actor and actress in a lead role. They say actor.
But it was Lily Gladstone for killers of the flower moon.
I think she's going to walk away with this one. That's how good she was in that picture.
And she'll be the first Native American to actually win that award.
But I think she's going to win it.
A lifetime achievement award went to Barbara Streisand at this at the screen actor's guild.
The Sag Awards. A movie called Succession. Have you heard of it?
I have not won for best ensemble.
The drama series. I think that was on the big screen.
So yeah, best actor. Killian Murphy for Oppenheimer.
He even looked like Oppenheimer. He was good.
And you know, he lost that he has a very thick Irish accent when he talks.
But you don't hear that when they're in the movie.
He sounds like he comes from, you know, the United States.
Robert Downey Jr. from Oppenheimer. He was very good.
He was only shown in black and white in that movie though.
If you remember, he was only in the black and white scenes.
He wanted for best male actor in a supporting role.
Then there's a category called stunt ensemble for the stunt actors.
And that was Mission Impossible.
I didn't know that was even a category to do.
You know, I didn't know, but this is the SAG Awards.
And these are a good indicator leading into the Oscars or the Academy Awards.
And I would say for people Mission Impossible did recommend it.
It was nominated for major awards this year for the Oscars.
That was one that kind of got forgotten during the summer.
And the reason why is it was released just a little over a week before
the Oppenheimer and Barbie phenomenon, which became barbenheimer.
So Mission Impossible did recommend that kind of got swallowed up.
It's part one. There's going to be a part two.
So I'd really recommend to people.
To me, it was either the top number one for me in Mission Impossible's or number two.
I'm kind of debating back and forth about that.
But the stunts are spectacular, cruise is spectacular.
And unfortunately, that was a casualty of how successful Oppenheimer and Barbie were.
That Mission Impossible kind of got swept under the rug after its first week.
So I'd help people go check that one out.
Now, the people I've spoken to my guests coming into the studio here that have seen Barbie.
So they loved it.
I know they finally are going to have Ryan Gosling do the I'm Ken Song
as part of the Academy Awards.
He's going to sing his own song.
It's up for an Oscar.
And he's up for an Oscar too.
And the picture is up for best picture.
Is it really best picture or is it just that it was so popular the Academy couldn't ignore it?
I didn't see it, so I don't know.
Well, this is exactly why I think it's good that we have up to 10 nominations.
Because if you go way back winning, there only five.
I don't necessarily know that Barbie would have made it in there.
However, I will tell you this.
It is deserving of being in the top 10 movies of the year.
It was an important movie.
It was the one people enjoyed.
And I think, you know, when you see it, when you have a movie that has over $600 million at the box office,
that everyone enjoys, that has great performances, that has great music,
it deserves to be nominated.
So I think anyone that saw the movie would tell you yes.
It should be in there for best picture.
Do I think it's going to win?
No.
Because I think that Oppenheimer is a little better positioned for what we would call best picture.
But I think it's glad it got nominated.
And if people haven't seen it, they should surely go out and see it.
And here's something for you actually.
Next Saturday of the 9th is actually National Barbie Day.
So if you're looking for something to do and celebrate Barbie,
we are actually playing in our theaters on National Barbie Day.

Yeah.
I thought they said it was rough.
That's the first thing on Google there.
Yeah, I think they said it was fictional,
but it was supposed to be around Shaboykin somewhere up there.
She wasn't from Racine or Milwaukee.
I know that.
And it wasn't from walkie-talk.
Now, do you think they'll give it the best supporting actor,
not to Ryan Gosling, just to make sure Barbies get something?
Well, we'll just give him maybe to give him the song
because I got to make sure that movie wins something.
I mean, I hate to say it, but that's the way
sometimes the Academy works.
They got to give somebody something.
No, I think I'm just kind of going to win for a original song.
And we'll get into this next week when we really go through it.
Yeah.
But in terms of actor and a supporting role,
I think Robert Downey Jr. has that.
So I don't think it's going to Gosling,
but who knows?
I'm taking Robert Downey Jr.
Just like the SDG Awards did for that one.
The very first Academy Awards I have,
I can remember watching was the year that Oliver won for best picture
because I remembered just when the show was starting.
They had the characters.
Mark Lester was dressed as Oliver.
And Ron Moody was dressed as Fagan.
And they were outside the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion
where they used to have these.
And they were standing outside in the bushes.
And they were talking and they said,
we're going to go inside to see if we win.
And that's the first Oscars.
That was from the 1968 movies that year.
I guess it was in 1969.
That's the first one I can remember.
And they used to do part of it from New York
and part from Los Angeles.
And TV technology wasn't great.
And they used to try to put both sides on the screen at the same time.
Sometimes it works, sometimes it didn't.
But that's the only award show I watch.
And I watch the Emmys, I watch the Academy Awards.
They get special food in my house for the Oscars.
I don't want any phone calls.
I leave the phone in the other room.
Unless when my mother was still alive,
we used to go back and forth and say,
do you believe that jerk one?
Stop flying that.
And here's something I never understood.
The longest speeches at the Academy Award
come from the people who win the short subjects
and all the technical awards.
They tend to give the longest speeches.
Anybody else?
And I hate to say it.
A lot of people say, I don't care about short subjects.
But these people do because they put a lot of time and effort into it.
And you guys are actually running a short subjects day.
That's right.
We brought them back as part of that showcase.
So we're showing the animated shorts and the live-action shorts.

And I will say this for people that haven't watched short,
it is actually really neat how these filmmakers compact stories

So I think people enjoy going to see that program as well.

This is a blockbuster opening up today.
That's right.
It's a mega colossal blockbuster.
It's coming to screen and managed spectacular.
You have got to see this one on the biggest screen possible.
It is Dune Part 2.
This movie has been getting excellent reviews on Rod and Tomatoes.
Check it out.
The critics gave it a given at 95%.
The audience has given it a 95%.
It has an excellent cast.
Absolutely breathtaking visuals.

Here's something that the movies are doing now.
Part one's in part two.
You said Mission Impossible's got a part two.
And when Wicked comes out, the musical, the Broadway musical's coming to the screen.
They're going to do that in the part one and part two as well.
That's kind of interesting that there's something to do that now.
Yeah.
And Wicked is similar to this.
So the last time we saw do was 2021.
Wicked is going to come out at the end of this year and then in 2025.
But I think it's a lot of enthusiasm for doing.
The last time we saw this one was 2021.
And the momentum has just crept up ever since.
And now we have this crescendo on the big screen this weekend.
So check that one out.
It should be excellent to watch.
And last week I couldn't remember who the original star of the original
Dune was.
It was Kyle McLaughlin.

When you want that original Dune, it's funny how much special effects.

A former recene alderman has been found not guilty.
A jury this week acquitted Edwin Santiago of a felony charge for allegedly attempting to flee from an officer.
Santiago was the fourth district alder at the time.
It was reportedly caught speeding by a Caledonia police officer in February of 2021,
resulting in a pursuit where Santiago exceeded the speed limit.
The criminal complaint indicated that responding officers believe that
Santiago had been drinking.
If you want to make a final trip to the Regency Mall, you waited too long.
Demolition has started at the mall with the plan to tear down half of it
and replace it with a grocery store 300 apartments in retail space.
In January, the City Council approved a permit for the project.
The move ahead, the changes will bring woodmins with construction expected to start in July.
I drove by there the other day.
They started demolishing Boston store.
It's not too noticeable from the outside.
But you can see the whole first floor of Boston's tours missing now.
So the White House comes to Walker Shaw this weekend.
First Lady Jill Biden will be scheduled for another trip to the state
with the White House confirming her appearance in Walker Shaw's Sunday.
While her agenda includes a stop at a political event,
specifics regarding the events timing and venue remain undisclosed.
Dr. Biden's visit, go inside with Vice President Kamala Harris's upcoming visit
to Madison next week.
