From the Civic Media Radio Network, moving Wisconsin forward one joke at a time.
This is As Goes Wisconsin with Kristen Brott.
Now, billing in for the new mom, here's Jane Mattenair.
Good morning and welcome to As Goes Wisconsin.
So happy to have you along today.
Carol Kane and Greg Bach with me in the studio.
Calvin is on the board.
You can always join us call or text at 844-967-2789.
Greg, 844-96.
Party!
Thank you very much.
And if you're watching on a live stream on Facebook, YouTube, and or Twitter,
you can leave a comment there as well.
Got a great show coming your way today.
Dr. Michael McCutchen will be here next hour to fix your life.
And then at 1150, Tim McCormick from the Harley Museum is going to have an update
with all the things going on related to Christmas at Harley.
They do a great job down there.
They really do.
If you have not been to the Harley Museum yet and you live in this area, shame on you.
It is.
It is.
She's very passionate about this.
To tell you the truth, when my mom was alive, she wanted to go to the Harley Museum.
So I took her and she, at 92 years of age, walked around and was fascinated by it.
That's really cool.
If a 92-year-old is fascinated by the Harley Museum, get your butt over there.
Well, I get something fun to do over the holidays when when...
Exactly.
...relies are in town and stuff like that.
It's a solid choice.
It's something when people visit here.
I'm always like the Harley Museum, the Harley Museum and a couple of restaurants.
If you're here for a couple of days, that will...
That will cover you.
That will cover you.
And if you have kids, discovery world.
Yes.
I love discovery world.
So Tim McCormick coming up next hour at 10.30 this morning, we are going to have our
Asghost, Wisconsin.
Christmas treat, exchange.
Everyone brought in their offerings.
No one has confidence in them.
Not particularly.
Except for I think Calvin's mom.
I think Calvin, Calvin, I feel pretty confident that your mom is going to come through
with the sour cream cookies.
They...
It had a moment of worry, but they turned out great.
I seriously would not be offended if you take a bite out of mine and throw it away.
I feel like, okay, fine.
You know, it was a new recipe, gave it a shot.
I don't think they turned out as well.
You know, when my husband took one and he said, it's okay.
That's always high praise.
I will say mine.
When we get to I'll explain more, mine is definitely a Frankenstein operation.
I can't wait.
Yeah, it was just, we have this.
Oh, let's try this.
Let's pin an ear to it.
Nice.
I can't wait.
It's going to be fun.
It's going to be fun.
That's coming up at 1033.
Right now though, we are going to start out with something that actually got done in the
House of Representatives this week.
And I really wish that our friend Pam Yankee, the fabulous farm babe, had been able to join
us to get a little more specific about this.
But hopefully we can talk to her next week if she can clarify a little bit.
But you can always listen to Pam at 5 a.m. the fabulous farm, babe.
If you're in Hayward Green Bay and in Aemory, Aemory, Aemory, Aemory, Aemory, Aemory.
So as I think we're all pretty aware, Congress is running out of time to pass any major legislation
before the winter break, including a government funding bill, billions in emergency aid to Ukraine
and Israel, immigration reforms.
But they did again, get something done on Wednesday, the House passing the whole milk for
healthy kids act by a vote of 330 to 99.
Okay.
All right.
So the current standards were sets under the Healthy Hunger Free Kids Act that was kind
of the main point for former First Lady Michelle Obama.
It was the whole Let's Move campaign to try and curb childhood obesity, obesity.
This bill overturns that regulation and now gives children a whole milk option alongside
the pre-existing non-fat flavored milk or 1%.
Okay.
All right.
If this is going to help Wisconsin dairy farmers, I'm all for it.
I think great.
That's great.
Yeah.
I just question when everything trickles down what this actually does for them.
Yeah.
How do they benefit and is it that big of a benefit?
I mean, we know our dairy farms are struggling in Wisconsin.
Yeah.
And again, if this is actually going to, going to work out and be a boon, then, then
good.
So for a farmer, we'd love to hear from you.
Please let us know, call or text 844-967-2789 once again, 844-96 and let us know what
this means because we need to unpack this and I want to understand better.
But I don't have a problem with this at all.
In the fact that as long as it's an option, I will say this that the whole milk option
I think should be there for kids because my pediatrician, when my kids were little, he
said, if you're going to feed them milk, give them whole milk because whole milk provides
them with the saturated fat and things that are needed for growth.
And if you've got kids that are under performing when it comes to weight or height or something
like that, and this can be an option for them that can help them, I'm all for it.
I really, I really have no problem with it.
I don't have a problem with it either.
I do think that obesity among our kids is a big issue.
It's a big issue, sure.
And, but, but to not have that as an option, I don't quite understand the other thing,
I guess, I don't quite understand is the passion with which this bill was presented.
It's always when it comes to something wholly American, do they present it with, look,
we are changing, these are changing times, what shouldn't change inserts, patriotic item
here.
Representative Virginia Foxx, a Republican from North Carolina said on the House floor,
quote, we want only the most nutritional option for Santa.
Whole milk is the unsung hero of his Christmas journey.
Santa needs to drink whole milk to travel the whole globe in one night.
Yeah, but it's the season.
I don't think she's being completely serious.
I really don't.
It's just the lightheartedness of the whole thing.
You guys, I clearly, I'm in the minority here when it comes to this.
I don't have a problem with what she said either.
It's just, okay, it's Christmas.
I just, it's, it's coming out of the mouth of someone who's just so poisonous.
That's the problem I have with her.
I, yeah, I just, I just think it's like, okay, like, yeah, I don't disagree to a point
where you're like, eh, fine, say what you want to say, but it also goes back to the
idea of passing this.
What does it mean for our farmers?
Exactly.
And honestly, and, and, and if, if she, and if she would have said this will do X, Y,
and Z for them, A, B, and C for them, and we want to help them, awesome, then throw
in your Santa stuff.
I don't care if that's fine.
It, it, it, it, it, it'll be fun to read in the record someday.
But I do want to know, is this, what's the rub?
What, what's the catch?
Yeah.
What's the catch?
Well, and again, if this is good for our dairy farmers, that's, that's great.
Yes.
But I, I don't know enough to know whether or not this is going to open up so many markets
that this is going to change their, their financial fortunes.
There are so many things involved.
And again, that I've learned to talk to Pam Yankee and other guests that we've had on
the show, the pricing of milk is so complicated and there are so many different things
involved who gets to set the price and then the trade agreements and how that all plays
in everything.
So again, I just, I think it's, it's a good thing if this is going to help our farmers.
Well, then that's great.
I, I think that's wonderful.
I do want to say that Democrats from Virginia, representative Bobby Scott, who opposed
the measure pointed out that practically every major public health organization agrees
that low fat and fat free milk are actually the healthiest options for kids, because again,
whole milk is higher and saturated fat.
And then the eternal argument when one Democrat suggested soy milk is more digestible
and better than whole milk, it is not milk said Virginia Fox.
It is not milk and I agree with her.
It's a plant-based food.
It isn't milk.
So you can't call it soy milk.
You can call it soy drink.
Oh my God.
I think we should call it soy juice.
I don't want to call it that.
Just call it soy milk and be done with it.
It's not milk.
Who cares?
Because it, I think, I think for our farmers, it makes a difference.
But farmers who farm the ingredients that make soy milk are still farmers, the soybeans,
the things like that, like they, they, it's still, I mean, maybe not a dairy farmer,
but still impacts farmers.
But also that goes on the big old pile of who cares?
That, that fight doesn't mean nothing to me.
And as far as the whole milk thing is like growing up, I was telling you off air is like,
I never had the option of whole milk in school.
It was always 2% or skim.
So I feel like we've been over the decades pulling away from whole milk.
Yes.
And now we're trying to go back to it.
It's like, that's going to be difficult because milk consumption has gone down and the
options that we have now between whole and between soy and oat and all the other ones.
It just seems rather all of a sudden that's whole milk is trying to make a comeback, too.
Like what is, what exactly is the reason why we're like, you know, we've been sleeping on folks,
whole milk and whole milk is the bomb.
I love whole milk.
And that's all we grew up with.
Yeah, me too.
We didn't have 2%.
We didn't have lower fat options.
And then the school that our little cartons was whole milk.
Oh, gosh, I can remember glass bottles.
Oh, okay.
I know.
Come on, Carol.
What are you doing?
I started drinking milk when milk was invented.
And I just wish we could see the same passion from some of our lawmakers as they did
when this with this milk presentation this week.
Tom Tiffany from Wisconsin showed up with a poster reading in all caps.
Come and take it with a picture of a tiny brown carton of milk.
See, that's the problem I have.
Is you want to pass legislation fine, but it's there.
There is where it gets sticky for me is when you start weaponizing these simple ideas.
No one's Tommy, Tom Teefe, come to me, come over here.
I was going to tell you something, no one's taking your milk.
It's still available at the stores.
There's lots of milk available.
There is a lot of milk available.
So stop turning in this like patriotic join us or die.
Don't tread on me thing because one, you sound like a fool.
Two, you sound like a fool.
Tom Tiffany, you are a fool.
Well, he's standing by his principles on the house floor in support of milk.
Yeah, cool.
Eight four, four, nine, six, seven, two, seven, eight, nine, eight, four, four, nine, six.
Party.
Good thing.
Bad thing.
Where do you come down on milk pro milk pro two percent milk?
So it's an, it's an option if they want it, they can have it.
It's fine.
I just want to say on the live stream really quick, Joe McLean.
I don't know what, what you said to get this response.
It was, it was the, it was the juice.
Jane.
Yes.
Jane dot, dot, dot, I think Joe is referring to, I think we should call it soy juice.
I, and we can let, we can let them take on, you can call it soy juice.
I'm too lazy to try to do it.
We can let them take on big juice then you try to take my soy juice.
Take on big juice, stay with us.
You're listening to as goes Wisconsin across the civic media radio network.
Thank you so much for joining us today on as goes Wisconsin Jane Mattner in for Kristen
Brie.
Carol Kane, Greg Bach with me in studio Calvin's on the board.
You can always join us at eight four four nine six seven two seven eight nine eight four

Twitter, you can leave a comment there as well coming up at 10 33.
We will have our first ever as goes Wisconsin Christmas treat exchange.
It'll be interesting.
We're all not feeling very confident about our recipes.
It's, yeah, no, I think is a lock Kelvin, when you forcefully entered your mother into
this contest, did you say like, mom, maybe some cookies are like, Hey, mom, can you do
me a favor?
How'd you approach having your mother bake for us?
Well, I am a very loving and kind son.
So I did very nicely, okay.
Let me hear your pitch, Calvin, come on.
Well, my mom also loves me a lot.
So I didn't take a whole lot.
I just said, so mom, we're having this Christmas exchange cookie exchange and I kind of let
it slip about your cookies.
Do you think you could make me some and she said, of course, of course, are you loving
son?
That's, that's about right, though.
I mean, where do you fall in the siblings?
I'm the oldest.
Of course, your first baby boy, number one son, I can't say no to my baby boy.
My younger brother is the favorite, though.
Oh, well, easy, the youngest, no, he's the middle, he's the middle.
How many are there?
There's three of us.
Three of us.
All boys.
No, my youngest is, my youngest sibling is my sister.
Got it.
Okay.
She's the light of your life, isn't she?
Something like that.
That's what little girls do.
Oh, man.
We got a text from the text line, nine, two, zero, listen, a WGB W in Green Bay, in Green
Bay.
As a lactose intolerant Wisconsinite, let me enjoy my oat milk, enjoy your oat juice.
I have no problem with it.
I don't like where this is going.
I just, this is the beginning of the end for today.
I have absolutely no problem in every option being afforded.
Yeah.
Of course.
I mean, seriously, it's, you want whole milk?
If you, once again, like I said, my pediatrician said outside of like mother's milk when they
were nursing.
Sure.
The next one is whole milk for the kids.
That's what I had to feed my kids when they were little.
No, that was back in the dark ages because I'm looking at 34 and 30 years of age at this
particular age.
It was a while ago.
But I just remember that that was, that was what he suggested.
Suggested.
Yeah.
And I think those recommendations have changed slightly.
Oh, sure.
In the last few decades, but again, I don't have a problem with this being an option in schools.
My only thing is I wish some of our elected representatives would display the same passion
for other things to about keeping our children safe, including safer gun laws.
Without, without a doubt, without a doubt, I'm not disagreeing with you at all.
But, you know, I think that, I think, you know me, I'm the fence writer.
I don't go right or left and I'm just kind of like, I think I can see lack of passion
on both sides depending on what the issue is.
You know, I mean, it's just, it's just the way we are right now.
How many times have I said to you guys, I think politics corrupts people.
They might go into it thinking that they're going to make a change and then all of a sudden
they get there and they're surrounded by a bunch of people that tell them they're great.
God bless you that, oh, that probably was, keep going.
I just, I just don't, I, I, that's just Carol.
I just, I find it so interesting how both sides sit there and yell at one another
and nothing's getting done.
Nothing.
Well, I think there are some things that are getting done.
Obviously, they were able to pass this, right?
But, but not major legislative items like a government funding bill or emergency ADU crane
or looking at reforming immigration laws.
So there are, yes, I, I don't disagree that politics does bad things to people when they
get there and maybe they began well-intentioned and things got changed a little bit.
But I just find the whole thing rather amusing that with all of the crises that we're facing
not only internally, but globally, that this is the, this is the, this is the passionate
thing and the drive that is driving people and the way they find their ability to not face
them.
And honestly, like, I'm just sick because I don't have any fear of saying it.
Who's in charge of the house right now?
If they're not taking things up, they're peddling those things off saying we can't do that
or we do that later or that falls on them because, because if the Democrats are in charge
and they're not doing anything, then we have to look to them and take responsibility.
But Republicans are in charge.
They are taking the, the, the, the very, very fiery topic of whole milk, not just milk,
because earlier in the year, it was milk actually was chocolate milk.
Then that's still an issue too.
Yes.
That's because of the sugar.
Tom Tiffany was like, don't you dare take my chocolate milk from my cold dead and mouth.
Tom Tiffany came up with a poster reading in all caps, come and take it with a picture
of a tiny brown carton of milk to apparently, at least he didn't have the issue on chocolate
milk.
Yeah.
I just, I don't know.
I used to eat quick by the spoonful.
Me too.
I used to dump Hershey's syrup into my mouth.
I, you know, whatever.
I go back to you.
If this is actually going to be good for Wisconsin farmers, then I'm all for it.
Yes.
That's great.
Once again, if you are a Wisconsin farmer and you have some insight in this, please give
us a call 844-967-2789.
Once again, 844-96.
Party.
Yeah.
I would think that probably for like the cheese producers, that whole milk is very important.
I don't ex, but they're not getting in the way that no, I'm just saying that I just
think that they, to, yeah, but cheese isn't the issue.
It's, it's, it's, it's, this is specifically about whole milk.
Right.
Exactly.
Exactly.
As an option.
So, and, and what we come back, we're going to do our first ever as goes Wisconsin Christmas
treat exchange in honor of this milk measure.
We are going to not only have snacky snacks, but we're going to have a milk flight.
Oh, cool.
Like a beer flight.
I'd like a beer flight.
Got it.
Or a tequila flight or whatever.
Yes.
We have a milk flight of whole milk, 2% and chocolate milk.
Okay.
Just really quick before we go, Joe McClear, stop just being mean, all right?
I don't, if that was a fat joke, I don't know what you're talking about right now.
Joe McClear.
But I don't do that anymore.
I'm no longer a child.
I put the syrup in the soy milk that I drink.
That's right.
I called it milk deal with it.
Jane.
And yeah.
So, whatever Joe McClear.
Boo.
844-967-2789-844-96 party.

From
Jackie hero
Best cookie worst cookie
and cookie
disasters as we
do a taste test here at 844
672789, I'm just curious
because I can think of one.
But where do we want to start?
Who should start?
Who's with whom's treat?
Should we start?
I'm
I want to start with carols.
All right.
So Carol go ahead and explain
I already had one.
I know
So what happened with the cookie?
What
First of all, start with what
it is.
Start with what it is.
It's a chocolate chocolate
chunk
So it's
Chocolate cookie with chocolate
chunks in it.
Now the thing is is that I, first of all, I'm not a baker.
They're
crispier than I would prefer because there's, if you want a softer cookie, usually you have
to use like shortening.
This has got a lot of butter in it.
There's two sticks of butter in these things, which is why they kind of spread out and
got a little crispier.
But they're
Not crispy.
They're not what they're not crispy.
No, they're
soft, which I
love.
Okay, good.
Like the one I tried at home maybe was a little, you know, smaller and crispy, but they're
just though.
I mean, you know, I think they're delicious.
I think they're delicious.
I would eat a ton of these and they're not over like this could be a death, death by
chocolate that always, you can have like two bites of a death by chocolate something.
There's just to be too much overwhelmed.
This is this is Carol.
This is good.
Good.
I'm glad you because you've got everybody gets some out of that container that I brought.
Well, that's okay, fine.
It wasn't a complete disaster.
I've had complete disasters before when I, like I said, this was off the air when we were
talking.
I'm not a baker.
Yeah.
I'm a coach.
Should have fooled me.
My son is the baker in the family and he loves to make cakes and he loves.
I used to be a baker like I've made wedding cakes before and I know how to decorate and
I've got all the tubes.
I don't think you get to say that I'm not a baker then.
Seriously, not if you make wedding cakes, well, that was a long time ago.
Oh my God.
Take the compliment.
We're so Wisconsin.
It's a Wisconsin thing.
We can't graciously accept a compliment.
We have to dispute it somehow.
We are also, we are also, we are enjoying a nice milk flight.
We are with 2% whole milk, ooh, political and premium chocolate milk from Prairie Farms,
which is a farmer owned company.
And that was a suggestion by Luke Mathers, who was here yesterday when I told him about
the treat exchange.
It was a very upset he wasn't invited.
So what do you have?
You have whole, right?
I have whole milk.
I love whole milk.
I mean, that's a treat.
Yeah.
That's a treat.
Well, yeah.
I mean, I'm with you on that.
If you're going to see, it's like beer for me.
If I'm going to drink a beer, I'm going fully loaded.
Don't give me a light beer.
I don't agree with you.
I'm just bring it all.
Bring it on.
All right.
Give me a barrel aged barley wine, 17% make me forget my name.
Exactly.
Okay.
So where are we going now?
I think we should try Greg's.
Okay.
So what you have there in front of you, I like this is like, ooh, is there's no name
for it.
So this originally was going to be a caramel ribbon.
I was going to say it got caramel in it.
It does.
It's very thick and it's a little hard.
I apologize.
It was in the refrigerator.
It has a base of a sugar cookie, then it has a layer of caramel with some chocolate
chips sprinkled in and then a layer of chocolate chip cookie dough on top baked for about 30 minutes.
It's too big of a bite.
Yeah.
It's a lot.
It's really good.
Be careful with your fillings.
Yeah.
Yeah.
There's a lot of caramel in there.
Yeah.
So you're going to want it.
But honestly, it was only a thin layer of caramel, too.
It really wasn't a lot of caramel.
Gosh, I haven't had cookies and milk.
She said she hasn't had cookies and milk.
I can't remember the last time I had cooked it and I mean, really, those carbols
kill me right now.
Sorry.
It's really good.
It's delicious.
Calvin, how are you doing over there?
Calvin also did not, he chose not to partake in the milk flight.
Which is fine.
Yeah.
Very tasty.
All right.
So Carol and Greg, we're doing well.
Absolutely.
Absolutely.
Yeah.
So this was like I said, it's a malgumation.
It's a Frankenstein, maybe they'll call them Frankenstein cookie bars because we literally
made it up on the spot because we didn't have all the things for the original thing was
to make caramel ribbon brownies, put them on a sugar cookie base and make them like
that kind of thing.
Well, you made this up.
I made that up.
Oh, wow.
And it's easy as I'll get out.
We didn't have some of the things and I'm like, let's just go for this.
And my mom was like, yeah, like everything I kept on saying, she's like, I like it.
Let's do it.
Yeah.
So those are the Frankenstein cookie bars.
Okay.
They're delicious.
But again, yeah, careful with those fillings.
They're, and maybe again, they, you know, soften up a little bit as there is, as you had
them in the first side.
You know what I would do?
And this is just Carol because I love to gild the lily, if you will.
I would put this in the microwave and put a little bit of, I say, I'm going to do
it.
Yeah.
Yes.
Yes.
Yes.
Yes.
That's a, that is a great idea.
I almost put them in the microwave before we started.
But I didn't want that like, yeah.
That's an excellent idea.
Yeah.
No.
And that, and then because what that is, is that's a glycemic coma right there.
Oh, yeah.
All right.
So where are we going next?
Are we doing Jane?
So why should you do mine?
Well, I will do Calvin's last because I'm fairly confident that they're going to be the
best ones.
Okay.
This isn't a contest.
This is just simply an exchange.
It's a taste test.
Exactly.
These are key lime pie cookies.
Ooh.
I already can tell.
I love it.
I, I, yeah, it's, they're not limey enough.
No, they need to have a little extra zing to them.
But I mean, I'm telling you, I put in and I, I specifically got key lime juice.
That key lime juice.
Yeah.
Very specific.
And so.
And it's just lime zest.
It's lime zest.
Yeah.
And I made a couple mistakes as I was putting them together.
I can taste them.
Again, like you care, all these, there's two sticks of butter in here.
So it's really hard, healthy.
Um, who cares if it's a hollowness?
I know.
But it called originally for a teaspoon of lime zest in the dough.
And I put in a tablespoon of lime zest in the dough, which you can't even tell.
Next I'm putting more than because the thing is, if you think that needs more, I think
this is great.
I think it's delicious.
Yeah.
It's nice.
It's light.
It's not overdoing it.
If you want more lime, which I'm never upset about, this is the key lime cookie.
I know.
Yeah.
I'm a citrus.
Sure.
Well, thank you.
And then I changed the frosting, the icing recipe because the original recipe called
for just powdered sugar and milk and then kind of a glaze glaze and I really, really
love cream cheese.
So I made a cream cheese frosting instead.
And I added originally, according to the recipe, a half a teaspoon.
I ended up putting in two and a half teaspoons.
Do it.
And I still don't think it has enough.
Do it.
Tell it.
I mean, if you're going to, I think they're delicious.
It's really a lovely, like a butter cookie, as far as I'm concerned.
But I'm with you in the fact that it could use that extra oomph.
Yeah.
That extra kick.
Yeah.
But this is a great place to start.
Let me tell you.
Next time I'll add more.
Calvin, what's your verdict on the key lime pie cookie?
I like it a lot.
I am going to disagree.
I don't think it needs more lime at all, though.
I think it is adequately limey.
I'm green with Calvin adequately limey.
What are you?
What are you?
This is cooking raw in.
Is that a quick lime?
I know.
I agree with Calvin.
I think it has enough lime.
But if you want more, go for it.
But this is delicious.
Well, thank you very much.
Yeah.
I think it's delicious too.
And I think that's the most Wisconsin compliment ever.
It's adequately limey.
I think that's perfect.
And I can accept that compliment, but she doesn't say it's not too over the top.
Yeah.
All right.
And finally, this is Calvin's mother's sour cream cookie.
Calvin, what?
That's the whole.
That's the whole name.
What goes into this, this wonderful cookie butter, flour, sugar, sour cream, and almond
extra.
Mmm.
Very light.
Very fluffy.
Very cakey.
Yes.
Yeah.
That's why I like them because you could eat ten of them.
Mmm.
What's again, am I the, I'm like acting like an animal.
I'm taking these.
Well, obviously you need to have cookies and milk more often because you are feeling
cheated.
I mean, what do you get my paper towel plate here is empty, but for the little bit, I'm
taking a slow on the, on Calvin's mom's cookie, I'm digging the milk, man.
I like it's, it's, oh my gosh, it's so good.
Maybe, maybe bring this to your holiday celebration.
No, they're all, I think they're all, I mean, bring a milk flight.
I think that would be hilarious.
You could have your, you set up a little milk bar and then you could have a juice bar
with soy juice and, oh, juice, no, listen to you, you know what, I just keep swinging
half.
Calvin, don't laugh.
Don't encourage her.
Unfortunately, I agree with her wholeheartedly and I don't, I don't even like drinking
milk.
And I still agree with you.
You agree with her whole milk heartedly?
Yes.
He's delicious.
He's a hundred percent whole.
That's right.
No, I think that, you know what, I don't think there was a winner and I don't think there
was a loser.
I think they're all delicious.
They're all different and they're all fun.
They're all delicious.
I got it.
Actually, could I have a little, could break me off a piece of the one that I made.
I haven't had a.
Take a small bite.
There we go.
It's very, very chewy.
There you go.
Oh, yeah.
Yeah.
They're all, I mean, they're all, that's the fun thing about the holidays, actually.
You know, my girlfriend Mary puts together, everybody gets a huge tray of cookies.
She makes like 15 to 20 different kinds of cookies and everybody, when we leave her house
on Christmassy, walk out with a huge tray of cookies and that's part of the fun of
it.
It is.
It's just like, what do you make?
Spin the dial.
Which one am I going to get today?
You know, so you got to see the caramel's kicking in.
You got the caramel.
The thing I was very surprised with my cookie was that with the sugar cookie base, the
caramel, the chocolate chips and then the chocolate chip cookie dough on top, I expected
it to be far sweeter than it was.
No, it's nice.
But I was also just, that's where I thought I had failed.
Like I almost like all the sweetness had combined to create nothing, but no, I'm happy
with it.
How much sugar was that?
Did you do remember?
Oh, I didn't add anything.
It was, I mean, literally there were no, it was, it was, it's easy.
Okay.
Like, there's no additives.
What, what cookie is your favorite cookie and your cookie disasters?
I have one that I want to tell you about.
When we come back and stay with us, you were listening to the great Asgos Wisconsin
Christmas Treat Exchange.
This is Asgos Wisconsin and you're listening on the Civic Media Radio Network.
Now, there's a benefit to all of this that you might have overlooked or missed.
So now let me tell you the best part of it all.
Every time she sticks another batch in the oven, there's 15 minutes for some kissing
and a hugging.
That's why I eat Christmas cookies all year long.
Mom's taking away mom's.
I should be like those Christmas cookies, sugar.
I should be like those Christmas cookies, babe.
I should be like those Christmas cookies, babe.
I should be like those Christmas cookies, babe.
there.
Let us know if you had a Christmas cookie disaster you want to share with us.
We'd really love to know about that 844-967-2789 and let's look at watching on the live
stream. Tony says any chance of putting your cookie recipes on the Facebook page of
the civic media website. We have not made our cookies yet.
I would love to Tony and I I will. I'm just sort of embarrassed how to how easy they are
because it's you when you ask how much it's just basically like it's basically just
like a sugar cookie that you add cocoa to and throw in chocolate chips. That's basically
what it is. There is no like add a little sugar here a little milk. It's literally open
a package do this open a package do this open a package do this open a package do this
bake it you're done again. The most Wisconsin thing ever. I know I didn't do anything.
Oh, it was so easy. Oh, it was only five things. Oh, stop. I think do you guys have a favorite
though because I would say that my favorite Christmas cookie would be just like a short
like a rich shortbread cookie with a little bit of frosting on it.
Yes, I would I always like I don't know what they're called their official names, but just
that sugar cookie with a little. Hershey's kiss on top. I'm thinking of the peanut
butter cookie with the. There you go. There you go. Hershey's kiss. Those are really
good. Yeah, those those are very hard not to eat all of our. The Buckeye is good too.
You know what the Buckeye? It's like the peanut butter ball that's it's got. You know what
I mean? It's like peanut peanut butter and powdered sugar and rice crispy treats and
it's kind of it's not a no big cookie. And then you basically run it through chocolate.
It's called a Buckeye. That sounds really delicious. They're they are that's that's an
addictive thing right there too. I want to remind you that we also have a milk flight
that we're enjoying today. Uh, courtesy of Luke Mathers suggestion and texture from the
five four ones is if you I'd invited Kristen, you could have added another milk to your
flight. Hey, oh, hey, oh, hey, peanut butter blossom Sarah. That's yes. Sarah got a
five three. Yes, peanut butter blossom. Thank you, Sarah. Love your fun co popped all
icon eight four four nine six seven two seven eight nine eight four four nine six seven
two seven eight nine spritzer cookies are very, very traditional. Oh, very. So they're
kind of star shaped and then they have the they have you have to put up for us. That
is the biggest pain in the neck. It is. It is in the world. My sister and I tried
to make these the spritzer cookies a couple of years ago. And I was on the nozzle. Very
important position on the nozzle with the spritzer cookies and the nozzle would go shooting
off. Right. The nozzle would get clogged. The nozzle would not nozzle. It's a very traditional
European cookie. It's very picky. Yeah, it's not fun. It's really, really picky. And
ultimately, I gave up trying to get the nice shape to it with it. And they were just kind
of blobs. And it's like just put a lot of sprinkles of sugar on it. We're moving on.
You know, when growing up, we were my grandmother was Norwegian and we would have and it's
going to probably murder in it. But Berliner Krozer and Krum Kaka's and rosettes and things
like that. That's the kind of stuff my grandmother would make. That's, I love that. You said
that because we just got a texture from the 262. Listen to the Shaw saying my favorite
Christmas cookie is definitely Scandinavian fried rosette cookies. My grandma used to make
them every Christmas. I don't know up these were not fried. These were just baked. No,
spritzer just baked. Yeah. So Scandinavian fried rosette. I mean, that sounds very interesting.
There are very few cookies I won't enjoy. I think the my basic ones. I don't like shortbread
cookies. So they never taste like anything. Oh, there's nothing like a good buttery shortbread.
Yeah. You haven't had good shortbread. But yeah, I just, I'm really going to go to any sort
of Christmas cookie thing and I'm going to devour because I just, I love them. I love Christmas
cookies. I love sweets. I don't have a sweet tooth. I don't think because like we don't have
sweets constantly in the house and that doesn't bother me. But if you put me in front of fine baked
goods that people especially have toiled over, then I'm in. I'm here. Those, seriously, those
limey cookies, the lime cookies, like key lime cookies, very delicious. I want some more of those.
Anything that citrusy like my girlfriend makes delicious lemon bars. Oh, lemon bars. Lemon bars
are awesome. And I almost did that. I almost, I almost submitted that to because lemon bars are
so yummy. But are there any disastrous stories that we're hearing from anybody? I don't have
enough baking experience. I almost thought I had a disaster story from yesterday because when I,
I wanted to melt the caramel in the pan like a, like a, an expert and they were like, first
they were like, make your own caramel. I'm like, no, no. Oh, man. That's a whole, that's a whole
different step. And I, I may have ruined a pot. Yeah, I bet. Well, sure. I mean, that would be my
disaster in the fact that I forgot because I'm an idiot. Forgot that I had cookies in the oven.
And I went about my business and I came downstairs and the entire kitchen was filled with smoke
and the cookies were absolutely black. Smoked sugar cookies.
I'm entirely different recipe. I've opened every window and I've got the fan going and I'm just
like, you're an idiot. Well, that's the thing though. The key line pie cookies, I mean,
we're only in the oven for eight minutes. It doesn't take long. You can't, you can't walk away.
You really can't. Yeah. Mine, mine took, mine were 30 minutes. We did 30 minute baking and I think
that was good. I may only need 25, but we did because because they were a malgommation, we had no,
we just kind of had said 350. Yeah, to wing it. Yeah. And do 20 minutes and then we'll check.
Right. And my mom said, like, oh, let's do another 10 minutes. I'm like, okay, let's do that. But
then the, then the caramel coagulates immediately. This is like the technical challenge on the great
British baking show, Greg Bach. And you just have to kind of wing it and see how it goes. I'm telling
you, you put that in the microwave and you put a scoop of ice cream on it. You will thank me in
the morning. Well, we will get the recipes posted and check our show notes as always at civicmedia.us.
They go up about an hour after the show is over and we'll get up as much information as we possibly
possibly can. All right. News is coming up next. And then Dr. Michael McCutchen will be here to fix
your life. Stay close. You're listening to Asgos Wisconsin. This is the Civic Media Radio Network.
