And

Joel Karnick

here

we are here we go football talk 743 we got shawomigan high school football coach Michael Simone.

Good morning, sir.

Good morning.

Joel Karnick

Good morning to you.

We had the Phillips and shawomigan rivalry on Friday night.

It was good crowd out there.

I got to

be a part of the chain gangs.

We got to be right there on the sideline watching the game.

And that's, uh, I like to talk about the good things the kids do out there in the field.

Phillips, uh, got the wins.

It kept it close early, but then Phillips pulled away late and turnovers were a big key.

But man, your defense, I thought really, really had some really good moments out there in that game.

You must have been pretty happy with that.

For sure.

And I definitely have to shout out coach Schmidt.

Uh, he's been coaching in our district at all levels for a pretty long time now.

And.

And he's had a lot of experience coaching against Phillips and they run the same thing all throughout.

And he's had a lot of opportunities to try to study and plan for what's best and how to best combat that.

And every year I think he's got a great, great plan in place to shut things down.

I thought as far as players go, Dawson Minima had one of the best games I've seen on the season.

I had five solo tackles and every single one of them was a tackle for loss.

And then he was a part of like, I think 12 or 13 other tackles on the night.

He was just everywhere on that defense for us.

And he was a true game

Joel Karnick

changer.

Yeah.

And defense played well.

And ball security was an issue for you guys.

Did you say seven, seven turnovers?

Is that what you said?

They weren't all turnovers.

We were able to.

cover, I think two of the fumbles,

Joel Karnick

but

seven opportunities where we are given the other team a good chance to get in the ball, which is very frustrating.

Joel Karnick

Yeah, the field position was an issue on any time that turnover.

ratio is not in your favor.

It's hard to recover from something like that.

But again, it seemed like Phillips spent the entire first half in your territory, but your defense had a nice stand and a good fourth down stand in there to keep you guys in the game because I mean, coach pre-core, you know what he's going to do.

I mean, you know, you know, it's common, right?

It's a matter of which way misdirection and stuff like that.

So talk a little bit about the offensive side of the ball.

Is it more than just kind of the ball?

Security or talk a little bit about the struggles you had there.

Well, I think that definitely doesn't help.

I mean

Anytime we're putting the ball on the ground we're losing yards or we're losing an opportunity to be gaining positive yards and that puts us behind the eight ball of where we want to be throughout that drive like ideally we're gaining three four yards a play and we're staying on track to continue to get first downs but when we have a negative play where we're losing the ball or mishandling a handoff or even when we get a good run and now we have a holding penalty those things put us back and then it's hard to get the yards that you need when you need

Joel Karnick

it.

Well, you're young quarterback.

He's a sophomore.

Is that right?

Nice.

Ethan.

Nice arm.

I mean, he's

Flick of the wrist.

He's got a really nice arm So there's any if there's any young athletes listening out there for shawarma again And you like your dream of being a wide receiver.

All right get on the football team because Nate's got a cannon And that's gonna be fun to watch him progress here the next couple years, isn't it

for sure for sure?

And I know we've got a lot of really talented Especially those that freshman group in that receiver room.

So on the next couple years I think there's some big things coming

Joel Karnick

our way.

So yeah, cuz he had a couple of

flick of the wrist passes that were just like whoa I mean they were tight spirals and they were moving he's got a real nice arm

yeah when we when we've got time to let him throw and he's got time to get his feet set I mean the throws tend to look pretty nice

Joel Karnick

yeah and then I'm sure that physical maturity comes to where now he's not only a threat to pass but then now he can roll out and run that'll be a big part too right

yes I mean an eight man especially like you you almost need a QB that can move and run a little bit and it definitely hurts if you're in a position where

and you can't trust them to do that just because with having less people on the field and more space, you have to be able to take advantage of those things.

when they're accounting for everybody else on the field to have a quarterback that can slip away and make them pay for it.

That's a huge, huge advantage.

Joel Karnick

Coach Simone is with us talking to Shawamagan football.

Everybody come out healthy.

Are we okay on that?

I believe so, yes.

And JV tonight now in Phillips.

If people want to see the young guys go at it, it'll be in Phillips.

What time are we starting that today?

Five o'clock.

Five o'clock.

All right.

So going down to the Phillips football field, see the younger, the future of Phillips and Shawamagan playing.

Who do we have on the schedule for this week coach?

We'll have rib lake at home again this week and it will be our parent and senior night So there'll be a packed night, but it should be another good opportunity for us here.

Joel Karnick

Yeah.

Yeah, rib lake has had some Since the last year was the first year.

I think they went solo on the eight man wasn't it two years?

Yeah, two years ago and they got some pretty strong teams But it looks like this could be a real good competitive game, right?

Yeah, I mean if even if you just look at common opponents

Early in the season, they played Cornell as well, like we did.

And those scores were very, very similar.

So I think there should be a good opportunity to have a healthy

Joel Karnick

competitive game this week.

Yeah.

So Friday night, seven o'clock.

So I know you guys are one and two now, right?

One and two?

Three.

A one and three?

And it

kind of depends if you count the four fits in there, too, because Alcoa White Lake was a four-fit week, too.

So that would.

technically on the record, it'd be two and three then.

Joel Karnick

Is that how they put it in for like playoff recognition?

Yeah.

Okay.

Yeah, one in two conference, two and three overall right now.

Joel Karnick

Okay.

All right.

So, I mean, your playoff eligible this year, and I'm sure go back to the old NFL playoffs, you're talking playoffs, but I mean, realistically, what's a win number you got to get to to have a chance even be a part of the playoffs?

So last year, there were a couple of teams that snuck in with three

I think pretty much everybody that had four wins was able to get there.

We technically have another forfeit down the road here in our week eight game, which would put us at three.

So if we can pull off one of these next couple of games, I mean, I like the odds of us being able to sneak in.

It's hard to know with because there's been a handful more teams that have now joined into eight man.

I don't know the eligibility of all of them or where that sits.

So if the pool is bigger, it might be a bigger number you have to reach to hit that mark.

But.

in my brain, at least going into the season, that four win numbers about where we wanted

Joel Karnick

to sit

to have that chance.

Joel Karnick

Let's get to five and call it good.

That would be really

nice.

One insurance win would be nice.

It looks like Rib Lake is going to be hungry, too.

They're coming off the back of a 66-26 non-conference loss to Thorp on Friday.

So that's going to be two teams looking to look into counterpunch somebody that, hey, this isn't the guy who put one against you, but it's going to be a great match up this Friday.

I think we've had probably both two weeks now of having some tough games.

both of us here so I think hungry would be a good word to describe

Joel Karnick

what will be this week.

Yeah it would be so meaningful for the program to make the playoffs that would be a nice little treat for the kids to do that so that would be awesome.

All right so Friday night we'll have it on the air for you on Trobex I believe 103.1 Friday night as Phillips also playing I believe Friday night games so coach Simone we always appreciate you taking the time to come in after a

Very very disappointing loss for your other green the other green team yesterday, too.

So I appreciate that day to wear green.

We won't talk about that.

We'll talk about that.

We'll save that for later.

Thank you, coach.

I appreciate you guys having me.

Yeah, coach Mike Simone Chewamagen head football coach will get that game archive from Friday night for you on our web website.

Yeah, you are kind of that arch have this conversation with coach Simone and that way we can ask

Joel Karnick

him.

Hopefully we didn't.

Hopefully we didn't give Phillips any of a tipped hand last week.

Both of you guys commented on that coach pre-course that they know what we're going to do.

We know what we're going to do now.

We just got to pull it off.

So that was a funny one we put our put up on the archive last week.

We'll do that again so you can always listen back.

And if you have local football fans who might not have caught the game, you can listen to the lead up and the post game review right here.

We have every Monday morning.

Coach Simone will be stopping in 745.

It's 751 though.

I've got.

a word from sponsors for and sports coming up at
