Good evening and welcome to tonight's broadcast of high school football here on 103.1 Trail Mix, home of your Shawamigan Screaming Eagles.

As the Cornell Chiefs are hosting our Shawamigan Screaming Eagles here in

Cornell.

Game is about to be underway.

I'm Stephen Jeltlin ready and excited to bring you week two football here.

The Eagles look to be on a road trip to road games to open up their season and last week did not end how they wanted to and a loss of 44 to 16.

However, I will say upon hearing that score, it kind of gives you a little

Punch to the gut however I'll say the second half was much better performed by the Eagles and I'm hoping that that performance will continue and coming into the start of this game.

Last week ended or started with an on-site kick that went in favor of the other team into an immediate score in the first place so the Eagles the sky's the limit here on this first one as we are looking that the Eagles are going to are set to receive the ball once again here in the first half and so

If they can just get possession, it's already in positive play in my book here right now.

We're more and more fans for the Cornell Chiefs are coming into the stands right now.

We love the support of our local sports and high school sports, not just in football, but across the spectrum.

And we are just so excited to support that together here today as well as being on the radio.

All right, whistles been given.

Onside kick goes by.

And the eagles fall on top of it and retain and keep possession.

So successful start of the game for the Schwalming and Screaming Eagles.

Okay, offense is going to be taking over here.

I'm

just waiting for the, it'll be on the 35-yard line.

And just as a heads up, this field is the reduced size.

So for 8-man, you can go down to an 80-yard field.

And that is what has been elected to happen here in Cornell.

So the 40-yard line is the midfield line, just as a point of reference for those listening.

So the Eagles take over on their 35.

Here we go.

Four wide receivers, motion from left to right, fake handoff, quarterback keep on the left side.

Juke's one down the center.

Now he's really making some room.

20-yard gain, 30-yard gain.

Here we are.

Big-time run by Ethan Autoson, quarterback of the Charlamagne Screaming Eagles, making a very positive play to start here today.

Beautiful evening in Cornell, Wisconsin.

Ball is now placed at the 25-yard line of the Sheeps as they are entering into the Chief Territory, and the Eagles getting ready on offense.

All right, type formation.

We've got five linemen, two tight ends on each side.

Everyone's on the line.

Quarterback and shotgun.

Audison looking left, looking right, pulls motion left, high end off right, carrying up the middle, breaks one tackle, breaks two, and he's able to power forward for about seven yard gain.

Nice, positive play by number eighty, and that is Cole Crowe, sophomore.

Like that play, gets it on the handoff and just cuts it either.

He has two options, he can either continue it

to carry the ball around to the C-gap or cut it inside immediately and that's what he did there and really put his shoulders down and we get a nice positive gain.

Same formation, five linemen, two tight ends, one on each side, shotgun motion, right side, handoff, reverse to the left side.

Is that Oscar Veric?

He gets around the corner, first down, has a little spin move and it gets close.

Now they're within the ten-yard line.

We'll see the official spotting here in a moment, but that is a first down nonetheless.

And that was Mark Askovaryk, Jr.

able to get the reverse sweep left there and take it into now what is first in goal at a radar on the 10-yard line.

There we go.

Eagles.

So far, every offensive play has worked positively, and now can they cap off this drive right here right now?

All right.

Five linemen set here.

Two tight ends, one on each side, quarterback in the shotgun.

Motion.

Can be hand off right.

He's keeping, he's got to get around the edge.

So far he can't.

Big tackle for loss.

Cornell Chiefs have finally put their stamp on this game.

The nice was a three yard tackle for loss as they not only held their blocks able to push the runner further and further towards the sideline and then when they needed to make the tackle they did.

There you go get the crown something to cheer for here and the Eagles are now looking at first and goal, but it's no longer ten yards.

It's about 13 Okay lining up looks like we got our wide receivers out here two left one right We got running back with the quarterback in shotgun Motion right ball hike he gets the ball back left and now he's carrying Nick Nichols able to get back some yardage

But basically, it's back to where it was originally.

So it's still first and goal with 10 to go now, and it'll be third down.

Not first and goal, third and goal, but 10 now.

Okay.

Chiefs, when they got to have it, their defense is starting to lock up here, keeping the Eagles out.

Now the Eagles full spread formation, four wide receivers, two on each side, shotgun.

Mark's looking wide open here in the slot, ball, hike, looking.

Ottison is getting pressure.

He almost gets back.

He will get rid of the ball in time and it's going to be incomplete pass.

Fourth down now with ten to go.

Four, and I'd say not for a first down for a touchdown, it's fourth down in goal at the ten.

The play developed weird there.

I think

So Oscar Varico on the slot, he had basically no one guarding him.

He went on the flat.

But the corner on the outside receiver stayed his spot, and so the flat was immediately taken out.

So Ottison didn't really have any options, and that was good defense by the Chiefs.

All right.

Two-eyed receivers, right, one left.

Ball hiked.

Ottison's keeping, fakes the run, throws it wide open in the end zone, and it is caught.

Touchdown number 81.

Skyler Audison senior bringing it in and now the Eagles open up on their opening drive with a score they lead six to zero Nice job.

Nice play design.

They had the running back and shotgun with the quarterback there ball hiked.

It was a quarterback sneak sweep And so the running back was going as a blocker, but then Audison it turned out to be a fake He goes back in the past and throws it to a wide open

Skyler.

All right, two point conversion.

Four water seevers, two in each side, direct snap.

He runs up the gut, gets past one guy, barrels four rolled over the goal line.

Two point conversion is good, and the Eagles open up with a strong statement that says, yeah, last week we were down 36-0 at half, but now we got points on the board and there's a 37 left in the first quarter.

All right, what can Cornell Chiefs do here?

He led up the opening score here, but

Now it's your turn to go on offense.

Can you make a statement?

Can you get out here, get this home crowd rolling?

Can you even up the score?

Okay, nice job by the Eagles.

That was good to see, you know.

Like I said, last week was kind of a punch to the mouth repeatedly for a while there.

But I'm not kidding when I say the second half was much better.

If you were to look at the both half splits right, first half 36-0, second half ended up being eight.

to 16 in your favor and I mean I was there the other team did not let off the gas they were still doing their air raid offense that was affected so much in the first half so I do think the Eagles were able to answer some questions and kind of get their sea legs so good to see the Eagles get a good good drive to open up the game here and they now lead 8-0 with 8-37 here in the first quarter and kickoff is about to happen here.

And here's the kick.

It's on side.

It's not going to go 10 yards.

So a nice job by the Cornell Chiefs.

That was good IQ football.

It didn't go 10 yards.

So you can just walk up to it and then fall right on top of it.

Eagles can't touch it.

And now the Chiefs get amazing field possession here as they start out their first offense on the Eagles side of the ball on the field.

Excuse me.

So they're going to be at the

about the 35 yard line of the Eagles to start their drive.

And I would like to remind everyone that this is an 80 yard field.

The 40 yard line is the midfield.

Shotgun, ball, hiked, quarterback keep, cuts it inside, gets past three defenders, but gets tripped up right at the end there.

Either way, that's a big gain of about eight to nine yards, depending on where the ref places in.

I'm waiting to see where he goes.

and Bryce, senior for Cornell.

Nice gain.

It's like an eye formation here.

Wide receivers both on each side, but the running back is behind the quarterback.

Ball hiked, hand off the gut, and it's a famba, and do the Eagles pick it up?

They're looking hyped, and it looks like they do.

The snap looked a little weird, and the handoff looked a little even weirder, and man, do the Eagles come up big as Nate Nichols, Jr.

for the Chihuahua and Screaming Eagles.

was able to pick up the fumble ball and now the Eagles are back on offense.

That's not what you want to see if you're the Chiefs.

As you had a nice positive play and it looked like they were going to get that first down easy

and I

don't know if it was a hit, a mishandle for the fumble, whatever it was, the ball came out

and the

Eagles were able to capitalize.

All right, 806 remains in this first quarter and the Eagles lead 80 and they get the ball back.

Four wide receivers, pressure is on.

Two on each side, Audison looking, gets the motion.

Mark on the left side, fall start.

I'm

pretty sure the fall start was on all of the linemen, but there you go.

I think they all thought it was on the one or two, but that was the motion for Mark.

And yeah, they go back five yards.

Okay, so now...

The ball will be placed on about the Eagles 20 yard line.

About 20, yeah about the 20 yard line and they got everyone up on the line.

Two tight ends are on the right side.

Ball hiked.

Quarterback keeps sweep right.

Looking for a space doesn't get it and that's going to go down as a sack.

Not necessarily tackled, but he's pushed out of balance behind the line of scrimmage.

And that is a nice play by numbers, I believe that was number 17, Bryce, quarterback and cornerback.

And he is making plays here today.

All right, Eagles, second down and 17 is what it's looking like.

Yeah, about 15, I'm looking at the board about 15 yards.

Yeah, either way, it is a long way to go.

All right four wide receivers once again to any side mark is lined up behind What is that number behind DJ?

So I wonder if he's going to come in motion here.

He is motion left ball hiked He's open looking for the flat.

He has to tuck it though quarterback Audison He's under pressure trying to dive through can't do it and we have another sack that might be a fumble and the reps are saying dead blood and Flags everywhere

They're

saying it was intentional grounding.

I think that might have just been knocked loose.

I'm pretty darn sure that was a knocked out fumble, but the refs thought it was intentional grounding so the whistle got blown so that either way the Eagles are going to get

Instead of losing possession of the ball, they're going to keep the possession, go back further and lose it down.

I mean, out of the two scenarios, I guess it's the better one, but either way, Otteson's got to be quicker decision-making because he had an open mark on the flat.

It might have not been a big game, but it would have been better than what just happened.

So third down at 20, four bar receivers, two on the right, two on the left, ball hiked.

Audison looking right, throws the ball.

It's going to be way over Skyler's head.

But to be honest, you see that or you don't want to throw a pick.

Well covered by Cornell.

And now it's fourth and forever.

And I would imagine that the Eagles are going to punt.

Good job by the Chiefs to kind of recover that possession.

They kind of gave it away themselves with the fumble.

And it was important that, hey,

Don't let them get points here.

So good job of the defense.

They got a sack.

They stayed, they were able to get pressure to force that penalty.

Whatever it was, fumble or penalty, either way.

That was well done by the Chiefs.

And now the Eagles are in punt scenario here.

Let's see what happens.

The Eagles are going for a punt before number 80, perhaps, to be the butter.

All right, ball hiked, way over his head.

He's going to have to pick it up, turn.

I thought he was going to try to punt it, but no.

He keeps the ball and the Chiefs are able to jump on top of them, tackle them for turnover on down.

But what's even crazier is that it's going to happen at about the Eagles five yard line.

So now the Chiefs are able to turn all of that in their favor and they're going quick.

Don't give them a chance to adjust.

Can the Eagles stop them?

Can the Eagles, they got five yards to work with here.

It's first and goal with five to go.

Eagle, Cornell, crowd's getting into it.

High formation, everyone under center, ball hiked, hand off, pushing forward.

And the Eagles able to tighten up there on the line.

Still a gain of about two to three yards, kind of waiting for that to get placed.

So it's going to be second goal with, you know, two yards to go.

Man, if you're the Chiefs, just do that play again.

Sometimes the beauty of football is that they know what you're going to do ball hike and it is swallowed up another fumble But they get it the chiefs retain possession and a couple flakes got thrown So let's see what the call is here Face mask on the defense that's going to be huge because that's going to be

Instead of it being third down, it will be first down.

How about that?

So there we go.

It's going to be first and goal once again at about the one yard line at the distance.

So man, Cornell getting bailed out there because that second play, they got absolutely stuffed.

It did fumble, but they did keep possession.

So there you go.

You get another lot on life there.

And just run up the gut.

See if you can get one yard here.

Alright, ball hiked, high, brings it in, jukes out the defender, a nice little happy feet by number 17, Bryce the quarterback for the Chiefs in the touchdown.

Direct snap went high, goes right, the little juke move and runs straight up for a one yard gain, and now the Chiefs are only a two point conversion away from tying this game up in the first quarter.

Okay, there we go.

Quarterback shotgun running back behind him, ball hiked, handoff, swallowed up, two point conversion, no good.

The offensive line got absolutely cooked by the defensive line of the

Schromick and Screamin'

Eagles and that is the end of that drive.

Eagles lead eight to six here in Cornell against the Chiefs with seven minutes and 14 seconds to go here in the first quarter.

Eagles received, trying to get through, stays on his feet, pushing forward yard by yard, inch by inch, and able to get the ball all the way to midfield.

And the Eagles will take over there at about the 40 yard line.

If you're just joining us, Eagles lead eight to six.

So far they've gotten a nice touchdown drive to open up their game.

They've got a turnover, but the Cornell Chiefs have responded in kind by getting them big turnover on downs in front of their goal line and scoring themselves.

Two-point conversion was no good on their side.

So that's why the Eagles have the two-point lead.

And now the Eagles looking to see if they can't write the ship on their offense here.

All right, not two yard gain, maybe a yard.

Looking like the ref, see I bought a yard gain.

Eagles right now are basically showing off two formations, which is

mainly a wide spread with two receivers on each side.

Or this tight formation where they have five linemen with two tight ends, one on each side as well.

Quarterback is in shotgun on both.

So they're running the tight one.

Fake handoff reverse.

Now Nick Nichols has it.

Or Nate Nichols has it.

Carrying the ball.

Flag would have been a first down, probably holding.

Yep, 100% holding.

So that's going to be a 10-yard penalty from the spot of the foul.

And it's going to remain second down.

So we'll see once, yeah, holding.

So let's see where the ball gets placed here.

They're going to say the hold happened right around the line of scrimmage, usually where it happens.

And they're going to move back 10 yards.

Looking like it's going to be, what, second to 19-ish?

Yup, there it is.

So, now we're back in Eagle's territory at their own 30.

Two water receivers right, one left.

Shock on with that running back back there.

Ball hiked.

hand off to Mark as he goes left.

Finds a seam, but then it swallowed up immediately once he gets to the second layer.

Number 52, Landon Larson Sr.

takes him to the dirt, good tackle by the Chiefs.

So now third down and just a little bit less, Mark was able to make it a little wetter.

Now it's a 719 to go, 18 or 17, give or take, and they got some place to go.

So de-air it out, trying to create some space.

Looks like the Chiefs have done really well in their defensive adjustments after that first drive.

And now we got all the five linemen, two tight ends left.

Chaka, Hike, holding, go looking left.

Now we have a pass play.

He's open.

It's not caught, it's intercepted.

Nice job by the Chiefs number 17.

Who else, Bryce?

Starting quarterback, starting quarterback.

He is everywhere you want him to be.

The Eagles had a chance to catch that ball.

That was in the hands of what I believe is number 22.

Austin had that and the freshman it bounced out of his hands or off his hands, whatever that was.

And then basically Bryce for the Chiefs made a great adjustment midair brought it down.

So that was third down would have been fourth down.

You would have punted.

So you know what?

I'll kind of call that an arm punt.

But man, you got to make those plays because you were open now.

If I had an instant replay, there was a route that was run wrong on that, as two receivers were literally on top of each other.

Bryce gets the snap, goes left, he's down the field, that's the first down, gets pushed out of bounds by number 33.

Bradley is able, Fresh was able to push him out of bounds and Bryce able to push this ball into Eagle Territory on one quarterback sweep left.

No one.

Austin threw the ball.

I looked and I was like, which receiver is it, too?

And then I realized that both receivers were literally competing for the same ball in the same spot.

So one of them ran the wrong route

and

ended up in the same place.

And honestly, that might have been why the ball bounced out of one of their hands is because they were right on top of each other.

OK.

Two-watch receivers, one on each side, fake handoff.

He rolls right, throws it.

It's going to be over his head.

Number 18, the intended receiver, Spencer.

Was not able to get to it and he was covered number one had great coverage Aiden Bushman was all over him.

So even if the ball was thrown Like right out where it needed to be.

I mean unless number 18 made an incredible catch that probably would have fallen incomplete So nice job by the Eagles defense to push this to second and ten and their own third 35 All right second and ten

Wide receiver on each side, shotgun, ball hike, quarterback keeping, does a little read option and flicks it to the back successfully for about a six yard gain.

Bryce ends up taking a pretty big hit.

You know, that read option, that's risky because you've got to throw it right as you're getting hit.

You've got to sell the carry and create space for the runner that's behind you and they did just that.

Nice six yard gain, third and four now here at through the 29.

Okay.

Receiver wide left to right ball hike another read option and that's going to be a tackle The ref is holding his flag.

That was very close to a horse horse collar Maybe the other hand was helping at the hip, but man that was a break I Was on the field and I might have grabbed that laundry and threw it But either way Eagles kind of get away with that one and they'll go down as a tackle for loss and now it's fourth and six

We have a receiver right, receiver left, tight end on the right side.

Ball hikes, and that's going to be neutral shown in fraction.

There we go.

It's still going to be fourth down because it's fourth and sixth.

It'll be now fourth and one.

That opens up the playbook significantly.

That is in a much better place if you're in Cornell shoes.

Chiefs trying to get it.

Oh, we have a timeout called by the chiefs.

I think this is a great timeout.

And the Eagles get bailed out here.

as what was a nice play there ends up being a five-yard penalty.

What's a five-yard penalty for the offense?

All right, fourth and seven, fourth and eight.

Two, three wide receivers left, one right.

Shotgun, ball hiked.

He's keeping Bryce getting chased down.

He's got to make some space, can't do it, and he's going to go out of bounds.

No, he stays inbounds, gets drilled and goes down.

That is going to be a turnover on downs.

Nice job by the Swamiget Screaming Eagles to take advantage of an ill time penalty, which would have created a first down for the Chiefs, but instead has now created a first down for the Screaming Eagles.

All right.

Both teams are kind of committing penalties tonight, and I kind of feel like whatever team cleans it up and begins to play smart IQ football here will begin to carve out an advantage.

Eagles still leading 8-6 with 3-22 to lead in this first quarter.

Now the Eagles take over on their own 25-yard line, first and 10.

Five linemen, two tight end set, one on each side,

Mark.

in motion.

Handoff, it's a reverse handoff.

Big penetration by the defense and he's got to get through to the line and he turns nothing into something.

Nice job by number 80, Cole Kraus.

Hit the couple yard gain after getting contact from behind the line of scrimmage.

Man, I don't know if I've so far that reverse sweep has not really been working too well.

I feel like they just got to pick a

Pick a guy immediately and hand it off and take your direction.

So we'll see.

Once a reverse works once in practice, I think everyone thinks it'll work every time, but man, reverse is just buy more team for the defense.

All right, ball, hand off, there we go.

Nate Nichols got it on the handoff directly.

Now he's trying to carry a defensive lineman with him as he's around the hip.

And gets another couple, maybe another yard or so.

Waiting to see where it gets played.

Yeah, about a yard, yard and a half.

Oh, more than that.

Nice job by Nate to get one of that.

So now we're looking at third and five.

And

you don't really want to treat this like four down territory.

There's two minutes and 15, 14 seconds left in the first quarter.

Eagles still lead eight, six here.

Third, five, even if you get three to four yards here, I feel like you can comfortably go for it.

All right, Eagles now.

Two wide receivers right, one left.

Running back, shotgun.

Mark in motion, left.

It's a direct snap, and he's a blocker.

Audison carrying the ball, and did he get anything?

He barely got a yard, so it won't be a sack, but it'll definitely be a stop, and it'll be fourth, and that's still might be fourth or five technically, fourth or four, and now the Eagles got a decision to make.

Just keep in mind.

This is an 80-yard field, so even though they're at their 35-yard line, or even though you're almost a midfield, you're only at your own 20 or 30.

So this is, they're going to go for it.

All right.

Spread formation.

Four wide receivers.

Two on each side.

DJ out wide to the right mark to the right.

Ball hiked.

Audison looking.

Floats it.

caught by Nate Nichols first down.

Carrying it down the sideline and he goes out of bounds on the Chief's 30 yard line.

That was a good play.

That was a good play, good decision and quick release by Ethan Ottison quarterback and a great catch by Nate Nichols.

That was just a classic corner route.

He just cut, you know, you run about seven steps, five to seven yards, you cut it outside and the ball needs to be in the air.

It was caught, gained, big time, and that was about a 20-yard gain.

This is 18, so okay.

Two arm receivers right, one left, shotgun, mark in motion.

Ball handed off, it's a fake, into a pitch on the right side, and number 80 is going to get about a 4-yard gain.

Kraus, able to get around the edge there and get a nice good gain on first down.

So now it's 6.

or second and six here at the 27 yard line

54 seconds to go here in the first quarter.

Eagles lead eight to six trying to see if they can't bump that score up higher.

So far they've been able to keep this crowd quiet but man the few plays where Cornell's made big plays they jump out of their seats and love seeing the home crowd getting into it.

Okay.

Let's see your two, one of yours left, one right.

Nate in the backfield with the quarterback mark in motion.

It's a fake, then it's a fake pitch, then it's a throw and it is thrown very high and very hard right over the head of Austin, right down the middle, incomplete.

If that play was right on the chest, you're talking potential touchdown, but man that is a tough ball to deliver.

He just put it too high.

Those are the passes where if you're not going to throw a perfect throw too high.

If you miss throw that sucker, you can throw a pick to the linebacker or it gets tipped and then next thing you know, whoever gets it.

All right, four wide receivers, two on each side, ball hiked, auto-sane is keeping, runs up, juke's out one, spin move, keeps going, and that's going to be a first down on third and sixth.

It's just a quarterback draw from spread formation and the Eagles able to buy themselves a little bit more time on this drive as they get first and 10 now at the Chief's 21 yard line.

Nice little shimmy there.

The Chiefs were all over them.

It felt like they were all taking turns trying to tackle Ethan, but they just couldn't get him down until after the first down had occurred.

All right, five linemen, two tight ends, one on each side.

Mark is on the right.

Nates on the left.

Ethan Shaka.

Mark in motion, goes behind, fake, and now it's a hand up to Nick up the gut.

Able to cut it up, got space, that's ten yards.

He's pushing forward, he dives in, and that's a touchdown by Nate Nichols of the Swamick and Screaming Eagles.

And now the score is 14-6 with a two-point conversion pending here.

line winning that battle and then on that play with Nate Nichols being able to take that ball 20 plus yards on what was a fake handoff into a draw just really shows you because like draws about inviting pressure and then and then beating the blocks right they did that so it's like man I do think as this game goes on the Eagles roster is about twice the size and so the the dangerous part about that is you can start to leverage

your bench strength in the sense of getting rest to your starters.

So if you can, I mean, be in this case, be ahead or close, you can start to really put the pressure on in the third and fourth quarter.

I was talking with a few other people here in the booth about their home team and they kind of have a similar story to us in which we kind of got beat up in the first quarter of our first half of our first games but had much better second half so

right now you're seeing the culmination of both teams being able to take the momentum that they had in the second halves of their first games into a high now what is now a highly contested highly competitive game here in their second game fake handoff keeping left side he's going to get a few yard game maybe at first down we'll see how it's marked but either way at the quarterback sweep left

Thinking about that play, I think out of the eight guys on the field, I think six or seven of the Chief players had a chance to tackle Nate Nichols and just could not bring him down.

I imagine the coach has got a few words, but outside of that play, the Chiefs have been playing great this game.

They've been forcing turnovers.

They've been forcing turnover on downs.

Everything has been earned.

And I feel like the Eagles have been committing more penalties.

So it's just like those big plays, those hurt, especially on a field of reduced size, you can really shrink.

Like I said, a 45-yard play,

That was they started that play on their side of the field.

I kind of want DJ to get back there and kick it again because DJ was able to cook it all the way to the end zone in last week's game And I think he could absolutely put this sucker

So why I want to pull up the awareness there is because you only have the first down markers on one side of the field.

and he still had the awareness of where the first down marker was, got past that, went out of bounds, dodged the hit, and getting both a big positive gain, making sure he didn't get hit and getting the first down, and he did that without markers.

So, I mean, I know it's a small thing, but those are really big awareness plays, and I think that just shows off how well Bryce knows this game.
