On June 21st, Willow Newell of Racine made history by becoming the first Black woman to be crowned Miss Wisconsin.

Newell competed against 29 other contestants from across the state, each representing their local communities.

As part of her win, the Miss Wisconsin organization awarded Newell $13,000 in scholarships, along with additional gifts and prizes. She also earned an extra $2,300 in scholarships after being named the top-scoring vocalist.

Contestants were judged in five categories: evening gown, talent, private interview, health and wellness, and an on-stage conversation focused on community service.

Newell impressed the judges with her powerful performance of “And I’m Telling You” from Dreamgirls, which secured her the top vocalist honor.

Reflecting on her historic win, Newell said, “It is an absolute honor to be the first Black woman to represent the state of Wisconsin! I cannot wait to step on the Miss America stage and meet all of you while serving this beautiful state I have the privilege of calling home!”
