The radio station secured 3rd place for Best Interview and Best Election Coverage
Kristin Brey, host of As Goes Wisconsin, interviewed Laura Lyons, a New York comedian who was in a coma for over three months with Covid-19 in 2020. Lyons wrote comical yet impactful pieces about the experience including, “8 Things You Should Never Say to Someone With Long COVID,” and “9 (Kinda) Hilarious Lessons From My 99 Days on a COVID Ventilator.”
Brey said, “I am thrilled that our interview with Laura Lyons was recognized at this year’s WBA. Not just because we are such a new show but because, hopefully, it will bring more awareness to Laura’s battle with COVID. She has literally overcome near death, being permanently disabled, and she is still funny as hell despite it all.”
WAUK 540 AM won 3rd place for the Best Election Coverage for Civic Media’s 2022 Live Election Night Coverage. Civic Media’s News Director Terry Bell and co-host Todd Allbaugh with reporters from across the state reported and analyzed live election results as polls closed for elections up and down the ballot. Closing coverage of the night began as the race for governor was called and Tony Evers made his victory speech.
Bell said, “I’m very pleased with this recognition from the WBA, and incredibly proud of our news team and our entire staff. We wanted to put on a broadcast that not only got our audience the results quickly, but helped put the issues and races in perspective in a way that would help our listeners be better participants in democracy. I’d say we’re in an excellent position to serve Wisconsin even better in future elections.”
Civic Media CEO Sage Weil celebrated both victories. “I’m delighted to have the team recognized for their contributions so soon after launching Civic Media, the As Goes Wisconsin show, and our statewide election night programming. We look forward to continuing to improve the quality of our broadcasts and raising the bar for hometown coverage in Wisconsin.”
