Both the NBA Western Conference and Eastern Conference Finals started this week, and it looks like we’ll be enjoying some exciting games.

In Game 1 of the Western Conference Finals, San Antonio’s Victor Wembanyama treated fans to one of the most dominant playoff performances in NBA history. He finished with 41 points, 24 rebounds, and 3 blocks in the Spurs’ 122-115 double overtime win over Oklahoma City. That performance made him the youngest player in NBA playoff history to post a 40-point, 20-rebound game.

After watching his strong outing, there is good reason to believe Wemby is not only the most impactful player on the floor but also the next face of the league. He is unusual because he can control a game on his own. He can be a prolific scorer without needing a perfect offensive setup around him.  He does not merely protect the rim but changes how opposing teams have to play.  That versatility is what makes labeling him the “future of the NBA” feel less like hype and more like a safe bet.

Of course, the Oklahoma Thunder is no squad of amateurs. On Wednesday, May 20, the Thunder bounced back to win Game 2 behind a strong performance by Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, who finished with 30 points, 9 assists, and 2 blocks.  Game 3 of the Western Conference Finals is scheduled tonight, May 22, at 7:30pm.

In the Eastern Conference Finals, on May 21, the New York Knicks took a commanding 2-0 lead over the Cleveland Cavaliers. In the latest game, the Knicks were led by Josh Hart’s 26 points, but as everyone knows, the Knicks’ offense still runs through Jalen Brunson.  When Brunson is creating efficiently, the whole team looks more stable. Brunson’s heavy scoring load and clutch shot-making are central to New York’s deep playoff run.

New York’s defense has also excelled.  According to ESPN, the Knicks have been the league’s best defensive team since January 15, and they have been getting strong results in ball-screen coverage while holding opponents down in the first two rounds of the playoffs.

My prediction?  The Knicks will advance to the NBA Finals for the first time since 1999.  And look for the Thunder to overcome Wembanyama’s blossoming greatness to rise to the Finals as well.  I expect a great series, but I think the Thunder will beat the Knicks in 7 games.
