Clayborn Benson Awarded Honorary Degree for Lifelong Commitment to Black History and Journalism
Milwaukee historian, journalist, and community leader Clayborn Benson is being recognized for a lifetime of preserving and uplifting Black history in Wisconsin through the awarding of an honorary degree from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.
Benson, founder and executive director of the Wisconsin Black Historical Society/Museum, has spent decades documenting the stories, struggles, and achievements of Black Wisconsinites. His work has helped ensure that generations of history are preserved and shared with the community.
Before dedicating himself fully to historical preservation, Benson spent 39 years at WTMJ-TV as a photojournalist and producer, covering stories both locally and internationally. His contributions to journalism and public history have earned him numerous honors over the years, including induction into the Milwaukee Press Club Hall of Fame, the Emmy Silver Circle Award, and the UWM Alumni Association Lifetime Achievement Award.
A proud UWM graduate, Benson, earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Film in 1987 and later completed a master’s degree in public history in 2024. His latest recognition serves as another testament to the lasting impact of his work throughout Milwaukee and beyond.
Through the Wisconsin Black Historical Society/Museum, Benson continues to educate the public, conduct research, and preserve the legacy of Black residents whose stories helped shape Wisconsin’s history. His honorary degree recognizes not only his professional accomplishments, but also his unwavering dedication to community, culture, and historical truth.
