James Green spent years building other companies’ cultures. Now along with colleagues Natsu Obaru and Summer Yang, he is building his own, one cup at a time.

KyuTeaCo (Kyushu Tea Company) is the Appleton entrepreneur’s love letter to Japan’s southernmost island, where he lived, learned the language, and fell in love with the art of Japanese green tea. KyuTeaCo imports directly from small, multigenerational family farms in Kyushu, some of which are farmers he’s known for over two decades.

“These aren’t just suppliers,” Green says. “These are families with whom I’ve broken bread with, sat across from and learned.”
KyuTeaCo’s teas range from everyday sippers to ceremonial-grade matcha, with more teas coming soon. A portion of every sale goes back into the community through the brand’s “11% for Good” program. Green calls it simple: good tea doing good things.
For a man who spent 20 years in HR helping organizations find their soul, it turns out his was steeping in Japan all along.
