According to police, a 2-year-old child died Wednesday after accidentally discharging a firearm.
As previously reported by NNS, some advocates argue that stronger gun storage laws could help reduce accidental shootings. Opponents have raised concerns about how quick access to guns is needed for self-defense.
All parties agreed that it is quite easy to obtain a gun lock.

Where you can find a free gun lock
- Milwaukee County operates dozens of harm reduction vending machines at various locations that include free gun locks and other safety supplies. Here’s a map of locations.
- The Milwaukee Police Department offers free gun locks. Residents are advised to contact local district stations directly to ask about current availability of free gun locks.
- Team HAVOC offers free gun locks, “no questions asked,” according to the group’s founder Rafael Mercado. Contact him via Facebook or call 262-599-9728.
- Neighborhood House of Milwaukee, 2819 W. Richardson Place, offers free gun locks on a walk-in basis Monday through Friday. The organization is open from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. Call 414-933-6161 if you have questions.
- United Neighborhood Centers of Milwaukee, 1609 W. North Ave., provides free gun locks during business hours. The center is open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.
- Journey House, 2110 W. Scott St., provides free gun locks while supplies last. Distribution hours are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Friday.
- Silver Spring Neighborhood Center, 5460 N. 64th St., has free gun locks for residents. Call 414-463-7950 to confirm availability.
The Wisconsin Gun Shop Project (“Live Today – Put It Away”), partners with participating gun shops, including several in Milwaukee County, to provide firearm safety information and temporary off-site storage options, often for a low fee.
