Recently, a listener of WRCO stopped by the station to drop off a piece of memorabilia they knew we would enjoy.

Bob Bodden had a VERY rich history in radio, not only in Richland Center but, throughout the state of Wisconsin. We will have more on that history a little later in this story.

Bob hosted a niche variety show called “Uncle Bob’s Kiddie Klub” every night at 5 pm and Saturday mornings at 9:30. In conjunction with Elm Grove Dairy, WRCO would entertain and celebrate children’s milestones and accomplishments.

The certificate dropped off at the station dates back to 1951, a mere 2 years after the establishment of WRCO AM 1450. In 2022, WRCO‑AM switched call-signs to WRCE, which includes the original AM 1450 and translator 107.7 FM.

THE LIFE OF BOB BODDEN

Robert J. “Bob” Bodden was born October 25, 1918, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He married Mary (Winter) Bodden in 1941 and together they raised 10 children. Bob passed away in 2010, at the age of 91.

BOB BODDENS BROADCASTING CAREER
  • Bodden worked in radio for over 50 years as an announcer, newscaster, general manager, and station owner.
  • He began his career in 1941 at WISN-AM in Milwaukee.
  • Bob helped establish three Wisconsin radio stations:
    • WRCO – Richland Center (1949)
    • WSWW – Platteville (1955)
    • WMIR – Lake Geneva (1964)
broadcasting leadership & influence
On-air legacy

Bodden created and hosted several beloved programs, including:

  • Uncle Bob’s Kiddie Hour
  • Coffee Break with Mary and Bob
  • Scrapbook Time
  • Thoughts From an Old Friend

These shows helped define the warm, community-centered style that WRCO is still known for.

Leadership & Public Service

Beyond radio, Bodden was deeply involved in civic and religious organizations, including:

  • President of the Wisconsin Catholic Conference
  • State Treasurer and State Deputy of the Knights of Columbus
  • Service on the Platteville Chamber of Commerce, Grant County Board, United Way, American Cancer Society, and multiple hospital and education boards

He was widely honored for his community service, including being the first recipient of the Platteville Chamber’s Lifetime Service Award.

Why Bob Bodden Matters to WRCO

Bodden didn’t just help found WRCO, he shaped its identity. His emphasis on local voices, community service, and friendly on-air personality became the station’s trademark.

WRCO’s long-running shows, local sports coverage, and community-first approach all trace back to the foundation he built.

Rumor has it, if a child presented that certificate at Elm Grove Dairy they would be treated to a pint of milk (white or chocolate). We do know that offer is no longer available, but we also know WRCO still offers local voices, community service, and friendly on-air personalities – just as “Uncle” Bob intended.
