BARABOO, Wis. — The City of Baraboo has officially launched its new municipal court system, marking a significant step in handling local ordinance violations at the city level.

In an initial interview, Baraboo’s Police Chief Carloni outlined the purpose and benefits of the newly established court. The Chief explained that the municipal court will allow the city to process cases more efficiently, after modeling what works best in the other court systems in Sauk County. By keeping these cases within the city, officials expect improved timeliness and greater consistency in handling citations.

“This gives us more local control,” the Chief noted, emphasizing that the system is designed to better serve both residents and law enforcement. The court is also expected to reduce the burden on Sauk County’s court system by diverting eligible cases to the municipal level.

Following the court’s first session, the Municipal Judge shared insight into how the inaugural proceedings unfolded. According to Judge Kujak, the initial court session went smoothly, with cases proceeding in an orderly and efficient manner. The Judge highlighted the importance of establishing a fair and accessible process from the outset, noting that early operations are a key step in building public trust.

While any new system comes with adjustments, both the Police Chief and the Judge expressed optimism about the court’s future. Officials say the municipal court will continue to evolve as staff gain experience and refine procedures. With the establishment of municipal court this will create revenue for the City instead of the Circuit court. The City will hold monthly court sessions going forward and expect it to be easy for citizens to appear with a streamlined process.

The establishment of the Baraboo Municipal Court represents a new chapter for the city’s judicial process, with leaders hopeful it will provide more responsive and localized justice for the community.
