Catching the Sturgeon Spearing Opener

RIPON, Wis (WRPN)- Civic Media sports reporter Wayne Mausser caught up with some of the sturgeon spearers during the opening weekend at Wendt’s on the Lake in Van Dyne.

Here Wayne (on the left) is seen interviewing one of those fortunate to bring up one of the prehistoric fish through the ice on Lake Winnebago. The shanty count for opening weekend was over 3,000.

This is how sturgeon caviar is gathered. That’s a five-gallon pail of caviar.

The Upriver Lakes season ended Monday. Good luck to those still trying their luck on Lake Winnebago.
