“Too few Black hands. Too many Black feet.” This is the motto of Black foot doctors and podiatrists across America. There are still not enough Black Doctors of any kind anywhere in America. But we will be celebrating Black Doctors in Milwaukee for 100 years in 2027!
Cream City Medical Society was chartered in Milwaukee in 1927. This organization has always been committed to making a positive impact on the healthcare of all Wisconsin citizens, with a particular focus on the health of Black Wisconsinites, while supporting the needs and aspirations of Black doctors at a time when there are far more obstacles against them. CCMS is a local Society of the National Medical Association, which was formed in 1895, and is the collective voice of the African American physicians and the leading force for parity and justice in medicine and the elimination of disparities in health.
Plans are underway for an elegant celebration of this Centennial on the first Saturday in May 2027, so save the date. Tickets will be $100 in celebration of 100 years. The intent is to recognize the contributions of Black Doctors to the health and life of Black Milwaukee.
There was a time when men dominated medicine. Men still dominate majority medicine. However, Black medicine has become dominated by women. There was a time when the National Medical Association would hold special luncheons for the women doctors because there were so few of us. Now it is the most heavily attended event at the National Medical Association convention annually. Sadly, the number of Black males pursuing medicine has declined terribly.
Medicine still has the glamour of helping people with health problems as simple as runny noses and as complicated as cancer diagnoses. It has always been an attractive profession for anyone willing to make the sacrifice to learn enough to be of that kind of service to humanity.
It is that level of commitment to the human condition that we will be celebrating on Saturday, May 2, 2027. Our goal is to preserve our history and inspire our future!
