MADISON, Wis. (WMDX) – Madison high schoolers walked out of class Wednesday to protest immigration enforcement and ICE’s killing of a US citizen.

Students from Madison East and West high schools left before lunchtime. They held signs and American flags, and chanted as they made their way to the Capitol. They yelled things like “no justice, no peace” and “immigrants are welcome here”.

A week ago, an immigration agent shot and killed Minnesota mom Renee Good. Her death, along with rising immigration enforcement, prompted their protest.

“ICE is fascist and are taking over the streets, and are taking our neighbors from us. We can’t stand for that as a community,” one student told Whittaker Peters from WORT News.

They said it makes a difference for young people to show up and be heard.

“It shows that we really do have a voice, and we really are represented,” they said. “We can speak up about issues we’re passionate on.”

Their demonstration ended in the Capitol rotunda.
