OSHKOSH, WI—(WISS)— For years, a piece of property along the Fox River in Downtown Oshkosh sat vacant, unused, and barren. But Thursday night, it was buzzing with activity as community members got their first look at the new ThedaCare Medical Center-Oshkosh during an open house.

Location, Location, Location

Oshkosh already has two full-service hospitals, but Jenny Nikolai, Vice President of Theda Care Medical Centers-Fond du Lac and Oshkosh, said most people in the city live over 15 minutes away from an emergency room.

“Most of the patient population and the population of Oshkosh lives east of Interstate 41, with (current) healthcare services primarily west of 41,” said Nikolai. “That leaves our population on the east side more than 15 minutes away from care that they may need. We know in an emergency that time matters and minutes count. And so by providing emergency care close to home to where over 73% of the population lives and works, allows us to meet their needs more quickly.”

Froedtert ThedaCare chose the site at 250 W. 6th Avenue for very specific reasons.

“A lot of thought went into what piece of property would be the right piece of property. We were looking all over the community and decided we wanted to be where the people live,” said Lynn Detterman, President of the North Region of Froedtert ThedaCare. “We looked to see what would really benefit the Oshkosh community. We thought of building along the river. And continuing that economic development that the city of Oshkosh had already started.”

Oshkosh City Manager Rebecca Grill said not only does it meet a need on the east side of Interstate-41, but it also complements the City of Oshkosh’s redevelopment and revitalization efforts.

“This campus aligns with the redevelopment and revitalization efforts in the Downtown, Riverfront, and throughout our city neighborhoods. We’re seeing new housing come online, employers expanding, young professionals choosing to plant roots here, and businesses leaning in because they like what they see: opportunity, potential, and a community worth continuing to build a future in,” Grill said.

ThedaCare Medical Center-Oshkosh by the numbers

The 114,000 sq. ft. campus cost $84 million to build. It provides about 60 jobs to the area. It will be open 24/7 for 365 days of the year.

Services at ThedaCare Medical Center-Oshkosh will include:

  • 24/7 Emergency Care
  • Inpatient Care
  • Outpatient Surgery
  • Pediatrics
  • Primary Care
  • Specialty Care
  • Lab Services
  • Imaging Services
  • Drive Thru Retail Pharmacy

ThedaCare Medical Center-Oshkosh will open for patient care on Monday, January 19, 2026.
