APPLETON, WI—(WISS)— Authorities are lauding an 11-year-old Appleton girl as a hero for her quick action and calm response to a medical emergency in her home. The Appleton Police Department, Appleton Fire Department, and the Appleton Mayor’s office came together this week to recognize Josie Pethan.

Pethan’s story

While she was at home sick from school, Pethan’s mother suffered a sudden cardiac emergency. She immediately knew something was wrong, contacted nearby family members, and called 9-1-1.

While on the phone with the Outagamine Communications Center, she calmly followed the CPR instructions and began lifesaving efforts on her mother. A Facebook post by the Appleton Police Department commended Pethan for her swift action, courage, and composure. She did not panic. And because of her quick thinking, her mother regained a pulse and was taken to a nearby hospital, saving her life.

“Josie reminds us that heroes don’t always wear uniforms. Sometimes, they’re eleven years old and answer the call when it matters most,” the Facebook post said.

The City of Appleton, the Appleton Police Department, and the Appleton Fire Department awarded Pethan with certificates and challenge coins in honor of her heroism.
