Papermakers and Port win

NEKOOSA, Wis. (WFHR / WIRI) – With one more week left in the regular season, the Nekoosa and Port Edwards Football teams are going into it with confidence, while Assumption and Wisconsin Rapids slide.

Nekoosa got a come-from-behind victory over the Wisconsin Dells with a 38-35 victory, while Port Edwards defeated Menominee Indian 43-6.

Assumption dropped its regular season finale to Auburndale 41-6, with Wisconsin Rapids falling to New Richmond 49-14.

Nekoosa, Port, and Rapids close out the regular season with road games at Mauston, Elcho/White Lake, and Eau Claire North, while Assumption received a forfeit victory from Rosholt.

Wisconsin Rapids and Port Edwards have been eliminated from playoff contention, while Nekoosa and Assumption await their fates, as the playoff field will be announced on Saturday, Oct. 18.

Riverkings win pair in New Jersey

It was a mixed-bag of results for the Wisconsin Rapids Riverkings when they competed in the New Jersey Hitmen Hockey Showcase.

Rapids played in four games. They dropped their first two to the Red Bank Generals (2-0) and to the West Chester Wolves (5-2), but finished strong with wins over the Connecticut Junior Rangers (2-0) and Mercer Chiefs (2-0.)

The Riverkings play their first home games of the season over Friday, Oct. 17 and Saturday, Oct. 18 when they host the Hudson Havoc, with both games beginning at 7 p.m. at the South Wood County Recreation Center.

Brewers topple Cubs, trail Dodgers

The Milwaukee Brewers edged the Chicago Cubs in the National League Divisional Series, with a 3-1 victory in Game 5 to advance to the next round. The Brewers claimed a 3-2 series victory over the Cubs.

In the National League Championship Series, the Brewers are taking on the Los Angeles Dodgers and trail them 0-2 in the series, having dropped the first two games at American Family Insurance Field by scores of 2-1 and 5-1.

Game 3 is on Thursday, Oct. 16 at 5:08 p.m. and Game 4 is on Friday, Oct. 17 at 7:38 p.m. Game 5, if needed, will be on Saturday, Oct. 18 at 7:08 p.m.
