High School Football Ends as Hockey Starts
High School football is ending while Riverkings hockey hits the ice. Packers tie and the Brewers start playoffs.
Papermakers get homecoming win
NEKOOSA, Wis. (WFHR / WIRI) – The Nekoosa Football team got its first win of the season on Friday, Sept. 26, when they knocked off Adams-Friendship on a goal-line stand for a 24-22 victory.
The Papermakers were the only local winner, as Assumption was shutout by Edgar 25-0; Port Edwards was knocked out by Marion/Tigerton 56-20. Wisconsin Rapids opened its game against Marshfield swinging and led 13-0 through the first quarter, but the offense came up empty the rest of the way, losing 24-13.
This week, Nekoosa plays at Ripon, Port Edwards at Newman Catholic, Wisconsin Rapids at Eau Claire Memorial, and Assumption hosting Pittsville for Homecoming.
The Royals and Pittsville will be on 105.5FM WIRI with the pregame beginning at 6:50 pm on Friday, Oct. 3 with Randy Pahl and Mike Kommer on the call.
Riverkings sweep opening weekend
The Wisconsin Rapids Riverkings opened the season with a pair of wins over the Minnesota Mullets on Saturday, Sept. 27, and Sunday, Sept. 28, with scores of 7-0 and 10-1, respectively.
Rapids next play over Oct. 3 and Oct. 4, with a pair of games against the Outlaws in Isanti, Minnesota.
Packers tie Cowboys
For the first time in the history of AT&T Stadium in Dallas, Texas, the Green Bay Packers did not leave victorious.
But they didn’t leave with a loss.
The Packers blew an early lead, but was able to rally back in overtime to force a 40-40 tie with the Cowboys.
The Packers have this weekend off for their bye week before returning home to face the Cincinnati Bengals on Oct. 12.
Brewers to face winner of Cubs vs Padres
The playoff chase begins on Saturday, Oct. 4 when the Brewers take on the winner of the Chicago Cubs vs San Diego Padres Wildcard series.
The best-of-three Cubs vs Padres series was tied 1-1 as of Wednesday afternoon. The winner-take-all game happens on Thursday, Oct. 2 at 4:08 p.m.
