OSHKOSH, Wis. (WISS) – The Oshkosh Police Department is once again reminding residents to remove all valuable items, especially firearms, from their vehicles and to lock both cars and homes to avoid theft.

A press release from the Oshkosh Police says there have been 36 thefts from vehicles since March of this year. Five of those thefts involved firearms being taken from vehicles. Three of those events were from unlocked vehicles.

“By being proactive with crime prevention, you help to reduce the risk of theft. Ensuring firearms are removed from vehicles and safely locked inside of homes can help keep our community safe,” the press release said.

Crime Prevention Tips

  • Remove all valuables from your vehicle. If you are unable to remove the items, make sure they are hidden and out of sight.
  • If possible, park in well-lit areas and areas under video surveillance.
  • Always close your vehicle’s windows and lock the doors- even when it is parked in your garage
  • Secure all doors to your home- including garage doors and side doors
  • Close and lock all windows on the first floor of your home
  • Leave outside lights on for extra visibility during the night.
