High School Sports Gets Underway, Packers Prep for Regular Season
High school sports are underway for athletes. Football, volleyball, tennis and golf teams are active. The Packers end preseason with win.
Wins evade local Football teams
WISCONSIN RAPIDS, Wis. (WFHR, WIRI) – The local high school football teams had their first games of the season over Thursday and Friday, Aug. 21 and Aug. 22. All four teams had rough beginnings.
On Thursday, Wisconsin Rapids and Port Edwards got things started with the Raiders being blanked by River Falls 45-0. Port Edwards’ team was knocked off by Siren, 46-6.
In Friday’s action, Nekoosa and Assumption didn’t fare much better. The Papermakers fell to Poynette, 25-14, while Assumption was thumped by Markesan, 38-13.
In week two of the season, the Raiders and Port Edwards have their first home games. Rapids will host Division 2 runner-up Rice Lake at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 28. Port plays at 4 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 29 when they host Tri-County.
Assumption and Nekoosa also play Friday and are both on the road with the Royals at Pepin/Alma, and the Papermakers at Westfield, with both games beginning at 7 p.m.
The Rapids and Port games are both slated to be on 105.5FM WIRI, with pregame beginning at 6:50 p.m. and 3:50 p.m.
Volleyball, Tennis, Golf begin competition
Several of the fall girls’ sports opened this week with golf, tennis, and volleyball all seeing its first competition.
Assumption Girls Tennis has been busy as they competed in a pair of multi-meets, sporting a 1-4 mark; the Rapids are 2-0.
Nekoosa and Port Edwards Volleyball opened things at the Nekoosa Quad, where Nekoosa and Pittsville both went 2-1, while Port and Necedah were 1-2.
Rapids Girls Golf has begun Wisconsin Valley Conference meet play and sit in second place after Leg 1.
Packers close out Preseason, set roster
The Green Bay Packers wrapped up its preseason with a 20-7 victory over the Seattle Seahawks on Saturday, Aug. 23.
Following the game, the Packers had until Tuesday, Aug. 26 to whittle down its roster to 53-players to prepare for the regular season, which begins on Sunday, September 7 when they host Detroit at 3:25 p.m.
