RICHLAND CENTER, Wis (WRCO Entertainment) – It’s QUIZ day at WRCO.

1. Spiral staircases in old fire stations were designed to keep horses from climbing upstairs. True Reason: In the 1800s, horses were kept on the first floor to pull fire wagons, and firefighters slept upstairs. Horses sometimes tried to walk up straight stairs, so spiral staircases were built because they were too narrow and steep for horses to climb.

2. Firefighters use brass poles in stations so they can slide upstairs more quickly to get to the sleeping quarters. False- Reason: The fire pole is actually used to slide downstairs quickly from the sleeping quarters to the fire trucks. It saves precious seconds during an emergency — you can’t slide up a pole!

3. Some species of crocodiles, can gallop on land in a way similar to horses. True
Why: Certain crocodiles can use a bounding motion with their legs that resembles a horse’s gallop, but only for short bursts to escape danger or catch prey.

4. RadioShack once used the slogan “You’ve got questions, we’ve got answers.” True ?
Why: In the 1990s, that line summed up their “we know tech” vibe (before Amazon ate their lunch).

5. Avis bragged about being #2 with the slogan “We try harder.” True-Why: In 1962, Avis admitted they weren’t #1 like Hertz, but spun it into a strength. Brilliant marketing move.

6. The U.S. Army’s long-time slogan was “We Try Harder.” False-Why: That was Avis. The Army’s famous line is “Be All You Can Be.”

7. Volkswagen’s slogan in the 1960s was “Think Small.” True-Why: It was one of the most successful ad campaigns ever, flipping the idea of “bigger is better” upside down.

8. Lay’s potato chips used the slogan “Betcha can’t eat just one.” True- Why: They dared you to try. And they were right — no one eats just one chip.

9. Chevrolet had the long-running slogan “Like a Rock.” True-Why: From 1991 to 2004, Chevy trucks ran ads with Bob Seger’s song “Like a Rock” — solid, rugged, American.

10. Dunkin’ Donuts once used the line “Time to make the donuts.” True-Why: From the 1980s, featuring “Fred the Baker” getting up early every day to make donuts.
