Residents should keep watch for black bears, Wisconsin DNR warns

WISCONSIN (CIVIC MEDIA) – The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is once again reminding residents to be on the lookout for black bears at this time of year.

Black bears are in the midst of their mating season right now and are expanding their territories more often. According to DNR officials, adult males could cover anywhere from 25 to 30 square miles in search of a mate.

Residents should also be aware that the bears will be looking for food sources while roaming in search of a mate, and they should take precautions like taking down birdfeeders or keeping their pet’s food inside.

The bear population in the state has grown exponentially over the last few decades: there were estimated to be around 9,000 bears in 1989, and now there’s approximately 24,000 bears roaming Wisconsin. Bears typically make their home in the northernmost part of the state, but they have begun to travel father south.
