RICHLAND CENTER, Wis (WRCO) – Scammers are going door-to-door pretending to be from charitable organizations, the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection says (DATCP).

Many organizations do different things to help raise money for worthy causes. The DATCP’s Michelle Reinen explains how the scam is carried out.

Consumers should always be cautious if approached by a door-to-door solicitor claiming to be from a charitable organization. They go to great lengths to make themselves look legitimate when they are not. Avoid being scammed by using different methods when donating to a charity.

Michelle Reinen suggests the best way to donate.

If you suspect, or are a victim of, a door-to-door charity scam you can contact DATCP’s Consumer Protection Hotline by phone at 1-800-422-7128 or by email at DATCPHotline@wi.gov.
