RACINE, Wis (WRJN) – An 11-year-old boy was fatally shot by his sibling late Friday night in Racine, police said.

According to a statement issued by the Racine Police Department, the incident occurred at a home near the 2600 block of Prospect Street at around 10:30 p.m. Family members rushed the boy, identified by relatives as Jesus “Chucho” Valladares, to a hospital, but he died from his injuries.

A 16-year-old sibling was taken into custody in connection with the shooting. Police said charges have been referred to the Racine County District Attorney’s Office.

Valladares was a fifth grader at Wadewitz Elementary School. The school’s PTA expressed condolences in a statement, saying, “Our deepest condolences go out to his family forever changed by this incident.” A GoFundMe fundraising effort has been started to help the family with funeral costs.

Anyone with information is urged to contact the Racine Police Department Investigations Unit at 262-635-7756.
