Friends of Sandhill Wildlife Area

History

After failed efforts to drain Wisconsin’s marshes in the early 1900s the First Chief of Game Management in the Wisconsin Conservation Department set to work. Wallace Grange, his wife Hazel, and staff were able to preserve the returning wetlands and found Sandhill Wildlife. Since 1962 Sandhill Wildlife has been in the care of the of Wisconsin’s DNR.

Features

Sandhill Wildlife features three observation towers (one is under repairs), vast maintained trails, and vital habitats for some of the endangered wildlife Wisconsin calls home. You can view the bison herd of up to 20 bison roaming along the Bison Barrens, or watch waterfowl and migratory birds in the 2200-acre Gallagher Marsh.

Events

There is an upcoming Open House on May 10th featuring an informational discussion about Whitetail Deer. There will also be opportunities to learn about Deer Ecology, management practices, and an optional Pre-Event Birding Tour. The Birding tour will begin at 8:00 AM, costs $10 per person, and registration is required. You can register in person at 7:30 AM the morning of or by email.

On June 7th they are hosting a Walking Stick Making Workshop from 8:30 AM – 1:00 PM. The following Saturday they are hosting a guest speaker on indigenous uses of Cattails more information and registration you can get all of that information on their website. They also offer paid membership that helps support the efforts of the group, and the conservation of Sandhill.
