WAUSAU, Wis. (WXCO) – Trails that are designated as winter ATV trails are now ridable, but not for long, warmer weather around the corner threatens the use.

Lincoln County’s funded snowmobile trails are now allowing ATVs to ride on them. They opened up earlier this week on Wednesday morning.

County officials say UTVs are not allowed to ride them though, due to their added weight and width.

Trails will close again to winter ATV use when the temperatures rise above 28 degrees. Which might happen on Saturday February, 22nd.

Saturday February 22nd, 2025 expected high temperatures in Wisconsin.

To close the week out and as we cruise into early next week, temperatures will be well above freezing and reach the 40s. Closing the use of ATV’s riding on snowmobile trails.

Sunday February 23rd, 2025 expected high temperatures in Wisconsin.

These ‘Spring-like’ temps will start to melt the snow, at a rate of about 1/2″ per day, at least. Current snow pack across northern Wisconsin is around 1 foot. This is the minimum base usually needed for snowmobile trails to remain open. Expect partial closures ahead across the state into next week.

Local snowmobile clubs say be aware of “Trail Closed” signs and watch for trail route changes. Stay on marked trails only and respect private land.

Stay off lakes and rivers unless a trail has been marked by a club. If water body is not marked, it is considered unsafe.
