WAUSAU, Wis. (WXCO) – For the first time this season there’s enough snow on the ground to groom cross country ski trails in central Wisconsin.
Cross Country Skiing opened up today at Nine Mile County Forest.
“We will open the chalet starting Wednesday morning. The trails have been rolled, except for the Alps and the little Alps. Track was set on the inner trails near the chalet.” explains Barb Maguire. “The south facing hills on the 10k and 20 k are rough but doable. Fingers crossed that we get a bit more snow to smooth out the track.”
For the first time this season the trails are groomed and the lights will be on for both classic and skate ski.
Cross Country Ski trails are double-tracked with a skating lane and are generally one-way. Almost 4 miles of trails are lighted nightly until 9 pm during the ski season.
The 18.3 mile trail system is double tracked with an 8′ wide skating lane. Trail difficulty ranges from beginner to difficult making this trail system attractive to all skiing abilities.
The ski chalet has a changing area, restrooms, and a spacious warming area with a wood stove. Rental equipment is available, annual passes are offered, and pre-season and school/group discounts are available.
You can purchase a pass directly from Marathon County through their online portal. Daily passes and equipment rental can be purchased on-site.
If you have any questions, please contact the Parks and Forestry Office at 715-261-1550 or visit the Marathon County website.
They also have winter fat tire biking trails that are now open. As well as 5.3 miles of groomed snowshoe trails throughout the forest.
